Wacka wacka wacka, oooowww, eee, aaaahhh. Etc. You know what a wah-wah sounds like and you know what an auto-wah/envelope filter sounds like too… because you’ve heard ‘em through rock and pop history. They’re some of the most downright arousing tones ever committed to wax (or encoded into 1s and 0s).
Any road up, here we go through some vintage and modern envelope filters to see wha’s what (see what we did there?) and help newcomers find a foothold in the scraggy crevices on filter mountain.
Let’s get whakkin’ y'all. Ahem.

The show I was waiting for... My inner Jerry is in a happy place.
My favorite pedal effect,...the envelope filter! Thank you Jerry Garcia. Thank you TPS!!!
You know you're on a TPS video when an "Introduction" on something as specific as envelope filters lasts a WHOLE HOUR.
No other channel reaches that level of perfection :)
Cheers from France, as always :)
Foster's Lab salut:D
Delta Flows Salut :p
The Spatial Delivery "Sample & Hold" mode re-creates the Oberheim VCF sound which can be heard to great effect on Frank Zappa's "Ship Ahoy", and FZ's solo on "Inca Roads" is maybe the definitive use of an envelope filter. The full Inca Roads solo is from the live album "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 2 - the Helsinki Concert" - an edited version appeared on the studio album "One Size Fits All".
Here was me thinking Auto-wah was the capital of Cana-dah... thanks for clearing that up, guys! Now I'm gonna dig out my Boss FT-2 and play the intro to Carrot Rope.
+Fraser McFadyen agahahahahah!!!!
Harness your hopes, Fraser
I actually live in Ottawa. And believe it or not, there is an automotive upholstery and glass repair place called "Auto-Wa". I smiled a big smile the first time I drove past and saw the sign.
Their banter is like slowly tumbling down the stairs and hitting every stair on the way down, without ever hitting the bottom - that said - like the pedal demos
Welcome to That Pedal Show!
Perfect timing! Just got the ability to watch RUclips through my TV. Work from home most Fridays and had geared things up to have my lunch watching this. Great start to the weekend 👍
THIS IS WHY I NEED YOU GUYS. I'm completely tone illiterate but today I learned that an auto-wah is an envelope filter. keep on with the lessons
Proud fuzz factory owner here! Such an incredible/whacky pedal that’s so much fun to tinker with and find new sounds
The Grateful Dead is undoubtably an American thing but Jerry Garcia and Bob weir were the master of envelope filters
Yessir
Grateful Dead were the greatest American band! toured for 30 years non stop. wrote hundreds of timeless songs with themes of life, love, everything about the human experience. they are the ultimate melting pot of American genres in one group. Grateful Deads recordings should all be in the Library of Congress. The Jerry Garcia Band shows too. then Jerry died that was the real end of the 60s and true 'Freedom' in the United States. now everyone is living the life of surfs, except our overlords are companies and banking conglomerates.
Great episode. Many thanks gents.
Special Delivery looks about right for my board
In my opinion "3 Leaf Audio" is the best envelope filter recently.
This is my favourite kind of episode. Hilarious AND informative.
"That's what wah wah." - Mick Taylor everybody. Literally speaking through the guitar.
Great stuff as always! I have one of Mike Beigel’s Tru-Trons as well as an original Mu-Tron III. The Tru is very close sonically to the Mu, in the same way as the Hartman flanger is close to the original Electric Mistress. About 95% there, minus some quirks baked into the particular components available when the originals were made. The Tru lets you split the gain into two parts, letting you drive the preamp into breakup without smashing the filter stage too hard (though you can do that too if you want!). It’s good stuff.
Truly sirs, there is something new to be learned at That Pedal Show every week. For example, what "bucket of chips" is. I feel more educated by the second.
You guys inspire me to play more and experiment with new sounds!
Seems the Gravitas can't handle gravity haha
Yes! Get Paul and Rob on the show! Just saw Jamiroquai last week and it was awesome! Was thinking how awesome it would be to have Paul on the show, dispite being a bass player. And we know you know Rob Harris! Bring it! Share the love!
Just watched this after unboxing a Sonic Blue/Rosewood neck Baja Telecaster which obviously I've renamed my D&M Telecaster (Fender custom shop might be missing a trick here). Thanks for the inspiration guys. I swear when I got it out of the case Swindon and Nashville became as one for a few seconds! Another great show. I love these more experimental pedals.
Every time I hear the spatial delivery doing its thing I just want one even more
Another great video chaps, I'd like to mention the Line 6 Otto Filter, great sounding pedal and cheap as chips! Also, the ZCAT step filter does what the EQD sample and hold mode does :)
I love using the Qtron on my bass, but like you mentioned, either the lows are really low or the highs are really high, but you cant move around the neck without losing something. So, I use an overdrive pedal with the gain off for a clean boost.
Fun video, gents. One of the effects I got during my stint as a bassist in several bands was a Russian, blue case, EHX Bass Balls. If you've never tried one on guitar, absolutely give it a go. Great fun and the built-in distortion circuit can impart some truly gnarly tones.
Always love the Grange Hill licks. Thanks :)
Yes!!! I was thinking last week you needed to do an envelope filter episode! ... and TaDaaaa!!
Yea a Christmas blooper show with you guys would be Season cheer for sure.
Meatball + fuzz at 20 minutes is just amazing !
Thanks guys and cheers from bask country!
+Breton Léo Meatball is killer!!
Brilliant video this, have been poking through these legacy effects in the helix and this was perfect as a visual for what’s going on.
With te Qtron+ the Boost knob in Normal mode passes input signal through the filter at its original level. Boost mode increases the signal gain to the filter according to the Gain control setting.
One of those episodes where I look at the title & think...not really my kind of effects. Then I watch it, find it really interesting & learn loads. Love it. Cheers guys.
+stevieboy444 That’s great to hear Steve - I was the same (Mick here.) Thanks for watching! :0)
Great video as always, guys. I have a VFE mini mu which is another fantastic dynamic filter pedal. The wooden box that it comes in is a beautiful piece of design as well. Mick, I'm loving the Grange Hill snippet that you played, haha.
I remember first hearing the EH Dr. Q. Had to go right out and get one, still have it to this day
I'm about as big a fan of envelope filters as you guys are of the Boss Metal Zone... but I STILL had to watch the whole hour! THAT is how good this show is.
+Gary Stackhouse Hahaha! Nice one Gary. I wasn’t a huge fan either (Mick here) but it’s funny how challenges like these send you off in new directions. A nice break from the routine. Thanks for watching!
Damn. So Mick went from “never used it” to my inspiration to go buy one. Dan really broke it down so it made sense but Mick made me think it would an effect that could fit in with the band in some way. Cheers.
Purchased the EQD Spatial Delivery in large part to this episode and thanks to you guys and I am loving it! Very inspiring, entertaining and the SD is not too big yet packed with tonal options. Thanks guys for giving this a full explanation and show of application to where I am playing guitar even more, cheers! :)
Ah, that step mode from the Spatial Delivery! One of my favorite Zappa guitar solos is an extended step-mode env filter jam ("Ship Ahoy", I first heard that on the "Shut up and play yer guitar" collection). Brilliant effect!
Mark Basinski
Can’t Believe you mentioned Ship Ahoy!!!! One of all my time favorites since I discovered back when I was 19 yrs old ( now 35 ) I was blown away upon first hearing it. At the time I had no clue how he got that sound. I figured it was some sort of fixed wah pedal through a filter. I have to watch the section of the video where they use the extended step feature on the EQD Spatial Delivery. Awesome comment! I also know FZ used the Roland Space Echo as well as the Son of Kong EQ & Boost and the ever so awesome and gnarly Dan Armstrong Green Ringer. If you have any other knowledge on Frank’s effects I would love to hear about it! Thanks!
@@jordandangelo180 Cool! Glad to know there is somebody else out there that digs that amazing solo. There are some You Tube videos out there of Dweezil Zappa talking about his effects rig and also about Frank's, and I apologize, I do'n't recall exactly how to find it, but there was one where Dweezil did talk specifically about the envelope filter gear Frank used for Ship Ahoy (if I recall correctly, back then, it was a bunch of rack mount units)
Long time viewer just wanting to say thanks for all the inspiration! Not only do I get serious guitar/pedal/amp envy from watching you guys, but you make me want to keep improving my playing so I can do the gear justice! All the best!
+Cameron Payne ah, that’s awesome, cheers Cam
+Cameron Payne Thank you Cameron. If we’re inspiring you to play then we’re doing our job. That means the world to us - thanks for watching!
This video scratched an itch I had since a long long time. Great
getting an OG Mu-trron would make me sooo happy! already have the silverface findertwin from '73, a nice gibson SG faded, a Slo reverb pedal, i need a mu-tron to take it to the next level lol.
I use the Keeley Neutrino. It has an input GAIN knob to dial in the desired sensativity and a detented output LEVEL adjustment on the side.
What timing! Doing some songs this week with “set wah” sounds that punch in and out (so tricky for me with a pedal wah) and was just gifted a Strymon Mobius. This really got my inspiration going. Thanks, and just ordered a T!
+tstu1701 excellent! Cheers T :)
Envelope filters and/or auto wahs are so not something I could ever see me using, yet I watched this whole damn video! (the step filter was pretty cool though) I'm addicted to this show!
+Larry Lachmann Cheers Larry! I was the same (Mick here) but I’m eyeing up the new Analogman with worrying seriousness... Thanks as ever for watching.
I like to run my Wah (Wilson effects) into my envelope filter (3Leaf Audio Proton), which gets as close to a talkbox as a pedal can get.
I also chase my EF with a compressor (Keeley Comp Pro) which really helps level the volume swing thru the sweep.
Idea pitch. How about doing some episodes where you choose a classic pedal pairing (fuzz and octaver, overdrive/distortion and delay) and have a couple of pedal combinations to get tonal comparisons. I for one would like to know which octaver pairs well with a big muff style fuzz. Keep on the awesome work guys! Cheers!
I’ve been using a DOD FX-25 on my board for years. Huge variations of effect with different guitars. Works great w my tele, not as well with my Strat, and my new tele w P90 I can’t get the sweet spot no matter how I fiddle with (the two) controls
Man, TPS leaving us with the fuzz cliff hanger!!! Looks like I’m just going to have to order a shirt to get through
5:48 Sounds like you were pretty much repeating the classic exchange from *"Ahh... the Name is Bootsy, Baby":*
_- I say Bootsy, you're a superstar, right?_
_- Uh, twinkle twinkle, bubba..._ ⭐
Rabea massad!! He is an inspiration! Auto like!!
You just know this is going to be a good episode!
Wow, that OCD!! It's the teles best friend!!
Nice would luv to get my hands on the spatial delivery
Earthquaker is one of the best innovators in the business.
I know this vid is several years old, but thank you for doing this. There's a HUGE lack of AW & EF vids, particularly educational ones. I'm building my first board & am trying to figure out which of the 2 (aw or ef) I wanna go with. Those MuTrons sound so good, too bad they're so pricey.
Trumpton: British Kid's TV show, Trump: American Kid's TV show.
The DOD FX25B is my favorite EF pedal! Even when it broke, I had it repaired. The new 440 model wasnt doing it for me.
My favorite is the old 80s Japanese Ibanez AF7, that thing is soo good and killer on bass...think it’s a mutron derivative, it does that super dynamic subby filter sound really well
Justin Garcia I think bob weir has had one on his board recently.
Interesting to hear the step filter of the Spacial Delivery - I had (no longer used) a Korg AX30G bought in '93 that did a step filter thing that sounded very much like that (and autowah too). Will have to go dig it out.....
"That Pedal Show" the only guitar based channel you'll find that plays the Trumpton theme. Rock on. ;-)
Some extra fancy and rare pedals today!
I would never buy one of these, but I thought there were all quite good sounding. The Earthquaker one in particular was very much my cup of tea
Informative episode, looking forward to the Bass special!
I had a Coron Funk Box years ago and that cheapo little guy was pure magic. Long lost, alas :(
7:04 "huh?" I fell over... Funny one this week guys!
Also worth a mention: the Z-Vex Seek Wah. All analog with a ridiculous level of control over the envelope.
I couldn't resist singin Higher Ground, super cool one
“Bucket o’ chips” killed me😂
Rhubarb and Custard tone there Mr Taylor @ 22 mins - Bravo Sir :-)
Just for fun, you guys should do a show about multi-effect pedals, including great rare ones such as the Digitech Space Station (the whole XP series really), as well as stuff that's more infamous like the Boss GT-3 etc.
aww man.... it really is time for a reissue of the space station
Besides a Washburn wah and random multi effect units, the first two pedals I played was an ocd and the meatball.
YES! I was just thinking about these after hearing john mayer use one on Rosie.
+jamie c That’s my favourite track on that record. What a great sound and song!
Mick - I used to have a Qtron which sounded ok but I had to use a compressor after it to smooth it out. Once that was in place it sounded great but wasn't always practical
Thanks, I've been asking for this for a long time (I guess maybe one of you guys remember that hahahha commented on a bunch of videos asking for this)
6:00 Groove is in the heart.
MXR envelope filter for the win!
Don't even POINT at that Mu-tron!
Thanks for another great exposition guys. You are the professors of pedals.
+Andy Mellor you’re very welcome :)
Its comforting to see you guys struggling with the settings on the qtron+, its a wild animal. Im considering selling it for one of the new compact mutron III's.
I really enjoyed this episode :) I am also wondering what y’all think of the moog low pass filter and if you could possibly try out any of the other pedals in the moogerfooger range I bet y’all would get some very interesting noises. Keep up the good work guys!!
I was so confident that Mick would play the intro of "I don't trust myself"
Thanks for introducing me to Trumpton. LOL. Cute.... although I've been to the UK many times I've not seen a milk float for many, many, far too many years.
Shopping auto wah and this was super helpful. Thought I’d be into the OG neutron most, but Meatball is SICKEST. Oh for the $$$. Thanks!
Many envelopes in this episode guess tps is preparing for the Christmas cards 👍
My first love... I have well over 40 different models (and lots of doubles of a few obscure ones I really love) ;-)
I would love to see you two spend an episode with the huge variety of effects, including filters, Chorus, flanger, etc., included on the digital Zoom MS70CDR. Perhaps trying to cop some classic analog pedal sounds on it like you did at the end of this pedal.
They tend to work better on the bridge pickup. More responsive. Also, no mention of Jerry Garcia? The envelope filter was a signature part of his sound ;D
+Jay Foster Guitar So we’re told. The Dead and Jerry totally passed us by. Sorry!
No worries :D The Dead is not everyone's cup-o-tea, haha. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and generosity.
Jerry is the reason I love envelope filters. A nice Estimated from '77, say the Pembroke show...just chewy chewy Mutron. Toss an octave divider after it and you're set.
AWilliams7878 jerryg... Master of the mu-tron
Jay Foster Guitar I was going to say something similar. Despite the classic Europe '72 (pre Jerry use of the mutron iii) I think Jerry just isn't much of a presence on the other side of the pond. But he certainly is the greatest envelope filter user who used it outside of a funk context.
PS-Special mention for the Function F(x) Accufunkture which I've been using as of late. Brilliant auto-wah/filter pedal. Very Mutron-esque and a great price point.
The Lovetone Meatball is quite a special pedal. I had to go listen to "What I Am" after this video.
I've met Dan Coggins from Lovetone, he's a REALLY lovely chap! I can't believe you forgot to mention his ring modulator "The Ring Stinger"
I know this is an old video, but I just had to comment that my envelope filter also has no master level control and now I'm wondering if this is a thing with envelope filters, or at least with ones so closely based on the Mu-Tron. My moogerfooger only has a "drive" control (pre-gain) that is always setting your level whether the effect is active or not. It's an always-on boost that luckily sounds great but can be tough for gain-staging without one of them fancy-shmancy pedalboards they got up in Shwangri-La. You guys are awesome.
Great episode as always. I was hoping I would see some fixed wah pedals like the Dunlop crybaby Q zone ( I know they are hard to find) or the Stone deaf fx PDF which you can also get a kinda fixed wah sounds. Maybe for wah/filter episode 2 😋
They were pushing the envelope with this one… hehehe
Another absolutely fantastic filter pedal--one that caught me off-guard--is the EHX Blurst. Not the prettiest pedal, but it sounds amazing! (Try running it with a tremolo; it's immense)
Does the auto-sweep plus has expression.
oo! Mick feeling some of that Mayer-ness in the Qtron haha.
Love the pedal show!! I hope for more stuff on the online store in the near future as well! cheers
+Kannon Price I’m always feeling Mayer. Erm....
Hey guys--love the show. Ever thought about doing a show about envelope-control on things besides filters? Example: the Earthquaker night wire, which has envelope-controlled tremelo speed? Cheers guys!
The Mr.Black Fwonkbeta would've been a great addition to this round up. Dan & Mick, if you ever get the chance to check it out I highly recommend!
definitely!!! i got one and it's sick either on guitar or bass :)))
Never really appreciated envelope filters, but this showed the fun one might have with one!
Side note- just watched a demo video on the new Wampler Tumnus Deluxe... and WOW! I see it becoming an absolute favorite of both Dan and Mick due to its incredible tweakability!!!!
Look forward to you boys getting your hands on one.....
+Francis Gori We’ve just taken delivery and will be doing a video with it very soon!
thank fuzz it's friday!
hi guys, first off, love the show;you guys are some of the best educators of youtube.
secondly, as a bass player i would love a bucket 'n' chips shirt ;)
and finally, would it be possible to do an episode of envelope (or dynamic) controlled modulation ? EQD night wire, alexander f13 and la calavera, pigtronix phazer and trem, maybe glou-glou stuff? i know you guys have loads of idea for shows, plus fan suggestion, but these things are hella cool!
I'll take a Bucket 'n' Chips T-shirt for my brother as well, cheers lads. ;)
Pigtronix knocked it out of the park with the EP2 .. check that one out when you can! Staccato mode too!
WMD Protostar & Dwarfcraft Happiness both interesting contenders on this subject
Not had chance to watch this yet but will do later. Minor point Mick, but I think it would have been stupendous if you'd have opened this episode with the 'Roobarb and Custard' them tune. The opening tone absolutely nailed it.
