I agree however... Good luck finding a woman who will understand that frugal living is very different from being cheap. At least where I live, you have to walk a fine line between planning for the future and having a date in the present.
Tammera, no need to cry. It's almost never too late to turn your financial situation around. Realistically, it will become harder the longer you wait so try to start today!
When I first read your book I was living paycheck to pay check. 5 years later I have a years worth of income in the bank, and the only debt is my house note. House is on track to be paid off in the next 4 years. Thank you.
My daughter is 17 years old, and she is applying for scholarship. We talked about be aware of not getting into debt for college it is not worth it, you will have to pay all that. There is no use to go college if you are paying all that debt. Be wise
Amanda Alfaro He actually does have a course for high schoolers. His daughter and friend are the main speakers in it. I took it my senior year. It’s very helpful.
I used to work with a guy who was a Dave Ramsey fan. Although we got along well, he would never go out to eat for lunch, go to the movies or happy hour with me. The only entertainment allowed was to go for a walk. Now I understand.
I knew a lady like that. They took the kids out of private school, moved into tiny cheap rental, sold their expensive cars and bought cheap ones. Spent five years being cheap skates. Now they have a beautiful house, nice but older cars, etc No debt. She teaches how to use coupons effectively, and she uses a lot of it to give to church and others.
I cry when I spend money...I have money just dont like to spend it..its a nice feeling to not have to check my bank account before buying something..but I always feel sad when I have to spend it. I always check and double check for the best value and cheapest price and make sure I really need something before I buy. I treat myself a few times a year but thats all.
@@bettfly I swear people post stuff like this but it never happened. If it did, they'd love to help others and share their knowledge. Being in a great place financially and in life feels good, helping others feels 10x as good.
My father is frugal and I am the opposite. I always thought my dad never enjoys his life by skipping the luxury when he can afford it but only because of him I am having a good life. After listening to Dave Ramsey, I have realized my dad's perfect and I am going to follow his footsteps
My dad too! He was always saving saving saving, living frugal... always told me to save and think for the future, of course I thought he was nuts! Now I realize he was 1000000% right. He’s retired, collects pension, 2 rents from his tenants and his mortgage is paid and is living THE life.
After a year of watching Dave Ramsey videos, I reached my breaking point and I moved back home and paid off four credit cards in two weeks by following the baby steps. I’m determined to one day to the debt free scream.
I think my family thinks we're broke actually lol I find it funny. We have a savings and pay things in full so it's ok. But let's be balanced and be generous even in our wisdom of saving and investing. ☺ Its easy to get stingy if you don't. 🙄
I have run the gamut from not knowing where my next meal is coming from to having so much money I didn't know what to with it. I never once felt "broke" because i shifted my priorities every time. Now at 42, I am "retired." When I had abundance, I made sure to save and invest. I didn't live a lavish life however, I did splurged when the math made sense. When it was famine, I made sure my basic needs were met. The single biggest thing I did was to eliminate debt and not get back into it.
In reality, it's nothing truly MIND BLOWING. All he is stating is common-sense. Simple math is common sense. You really do not need college level maths to figure out a budget. The problem is consumerism and the ignorant fools who want to live beyond their means.
I put approx $35,000 away last year for retirement last year and drive a Honda Civic with 220k miles. I plan to retire at 55 and keep conservative lifestyle.
I’m saving $80,000 a year at the moment, I make $110,000 after tax. Currently 19 and running my own business. I hope I can keep it up into my 40’s. Then retire😏
Amen. My 2 roommate eats out 1-2 times a day and are constantly concerned about bills. I'm about to buy a little house and land next month with cash, because I refuse to pay interest for anything!
@vulpix I take your point- living in an area of extreme housing prices is difficult. We chose to buy a house that was within our range, but had to sacrifice living near family. Otherwise, we'd be saddled with a mortgage for the rest of our lives rather than buying a house in cash outright, in a nice neighborhood.
Saving money for purchases is great. Just make sure you get your money's worth. Cheap houses can also mean so negative effects, such as being located in a dangerous area and has many damages where the costs is greater than the value.
I just want to say thank you for educating me growing up. My father forced us to listen to you in the car. I hated it growing up but now that i am an adult, I am smart with my money. And I love listening in now that i am an adult. Thank you
22 years old I suffered a ruptured appendix that was misdiagnosed for a month and I ended up spending a week in the hospital and ended up covered in debt. 10 months later I have one medical bill left and I should be debt free in 2 months. Couldn't be happier to have my health and my financial freedom.
I’m watching this from the U.K. - some of the terms are different, but the principles are universal - your income is your income, live within your means - treats needs to be paid for IN CASH and whatever you earn, put something aside for a rainy day. Dave talks about “big hat, no cattle” My English granny used to say “fur coat, no knickers”.
Completely agree, putting money away is a great idea and is useful in the long run. We have a RUclips channel for start-up entrepreneurs and small businesses. Feel free to check it out if you get a spare sec. Have a great day, Scott
I turned 19yo not too long ago and got my first job at a McDonald's. I make around a minimum $340 every paycheck, though atm I'm looking for a second job. I'd honestly rather work at a retail job, it's really hard getting a raise at fast food jobs. I have a little over $3,000 in my savings so far :)
That is so awesome, Ghoulifyed! Many people making 10X what you make don't have that amount saved. You are proof of the old saying: It's not what you make; it's what you keep. Very well done! Keep it up and you'll be the next Dave Ramsey!
I read his book , applied his lessons and now I can afford to work part time to balance my work life and family life. Paid off all my debt except for bal on my car! It feels great!!!!
And even if they are a boyfriend. I know someone who keeps getting boyfriends they let move into their house. I told her ✋ stop saying yes to being in relationships with broke loser men !!! They wouldn't listen and have not learned yet so I finally cut her out my life.
Thank you for your message, Dave. Because of you, I'm 19 months away from being debt free! I've been following your plan for a couple of years and I can see the light! People don't understand me, but I'm focused. It's about my life......thank you.
I'm 14, helping my families buisness, one of my older friends recommend you. start early on how to deal with finances and won't be in debt. it's a good idea
andrew stec that's very good. Starting early is the best we all can do. After taking the financial peace universe class I've encouraged my teenage brothers to do the same.
I'm in the same position but I branched off my dads business and we ended up closing down my dads business and put money and resources in mine because it was making 3x's more money than his. My only advice for is to be innovative and help out your family business as much as you can.
My spouse is a high income earner. One income household. We are 33. And we have about 150,000 in assets. We own a home with mortgage payments. Other than that, we have no debt. We drive old cars. We have no payments on anything than our regular bills and even our bills are very minimal. I don't subscribe to a bunch of things. By the end of this year we will have more than 200k in assets. While friends are taking nice vacations, driving new cars, eat out and go out for entertainment; we as a family choose to stay home in evenings, chill, eat at home and enjoy simplicity. It's easy for a stay home mom to go out and want to spend but I sit my butt at home unless I'm going out to volunteer or meet with a friend for coffee. I can't wait to pay off our home and be super wealthy before we're 40! Edited to add: in our 20s we made stupid decisions. We learned from that and became very frugal and pray about every big purchase.
no donkey joe. i do quite well and am a red blooded conservative. there's no need to reply on a forum how well i am doing or not. its pointless bragging to an imaginary crowd.
We have also made stupid things in our 20s, but became mature during the years when raising our own family. We also live frugal, and try to pay off all our debts to end of 2018. The mortgage should be paid for less than 3 months, I hope. We also drive old cars, pay all bills on time, not going out and don't travel during the weekends. Those are temporary sacrifices whose worth in long term. We pays everything by cash or debit card. The only thing which we don't save is healthy food, we prefer quality food, than junk food. Next step is building a legacy and wealth.
You would have more of what you wanted if you utilized all the resources available to you, including welfare if you qualify for it. Use it to save your hard earned money and then get off of the system. If you’ve paid taxes in your life, you deserve a piece of the pie when times get hard. Don’t let pride get in your way.
Good for you! I know folks say to take advantage of the system, but your self-respect is worth loads more than any food stamps will ever be. The system is there for those who NEED it, not those who can do it themselves and are proud to do so, regardless of income level. You’re amazing!
I started the Dave Ramsey plan two years ago. I couldn't save most of my income because I wasn't budgeting and I paid debt for 2,000 dollars. I was still eating out and spending money everyday. Its a learning process but I can now say I love budgeting as much as I like saving and giving. This month I have decided instead of saving 30% of my income I will be saving 60% of my income. I will also budget every month. Pay the same amount at the beginning of the month for necessities. I make 13,000 dollars a year and have 7,500 dollars saved up.
kthename08 Discipline and persistence. Trust me once you save that first emergency fund it will become easier. I also have a notebook that keeps me organized. I'm not debt free yet as I have student loans. This past week I called credit card company to dispute my accounts.
That's the tough part , saving up that $1,000. I've tried several times and when I'm almost there, life throws a health scare for either me or a family member and I have to use that money . I'm glad I had a few extra hundred dollars to take care of things, but I hope the universe takes a break and let me save up the damn $1,000 without major drama interruptions.
Pamela C. I understand that, I've been on baby step one forever also but I'm going to keep pushing until I get it, about to start saving half my paycheck every two weeks because my expenses are still low since I haven't moved out yet ( I hope to do so later this year) and I received a raise last month. In the meantime I'm enrolled in school and looking for better job opportunities lol.
Anyone remember when credit was taboo? Having pride in your life was saving for things and paying cash for them. Today, instant gratification is promoted SO much!
You've been a mentor, pretty much a father figure to me. 32 I found you. I had a PhD in dumb. I was the example of how to be broke! I've been working since I was 16. I'm 34 and my life has been completely changed! I learned how to be a responsible adult, as well as a better man! Thank you for your message and your passion!
Carlo Council If so it’s probably under $100/ month. My brother works as a caseworker and he said that food stamp amounts have went down drastically in the last 5 years. One person he approved was only eligible for $14/ month basically making it not worth the effort. The days of living off the government is almost over.
Unless you already have a college degree and a job skill, I'd say to use your time now to go to college. My DD had one child at 21 and she got "need based" money.
buddypng31 His company does have a high school curriculum in quite a few high schools around the country. The problem is that most high schoolers can’t apply any of the knowledge they are learning so it goes in one ear and out the other.
If he makes 2500 a month and saves a little over half of it. Which means he lives below his means. Maybe his apartment cost like 500 a month and bills are pretty cheap and he doesn’t do anything else extra which is the only way to save that much. He doesn’t have to live with his parents.
I am 81 years old. When I was 12 I had a paper route that paid me $7 a week. That was a lot for a 12 year old kid. I have not looked back since. I never went to collage and my retirement income is double my expenses. I own my own home and I am debt free. It was not that easy but it was not that hard either.
Not only is Dave like a teacher and a second father to me and I'm sure to a lot of you too, the people listening to him on RUclips provide the best advice, motivational quotes and lessons from their own experience in the comment section. I love our Ramsey Club ❤ we rise by lifting others, my loves..
Me and my husband were soooo close on buying a new car From dealership cause the payments seemed fair,,, but then after thinking about it my heart didn’t feel settled. God was telling me no that’s not what we need.... I’m so glad we didn’t go for it.... now we’re saving for one to pay cash on. Thanks to this man and God I finally understand why.
I AM so serious about getting out of debt nothing else to me matters. I'm chipping away and look forward to when I can say I AM DEBT FREE on a mountain top literally!!!!
Yes it does. I am RN and live on half of what I make. I never pay retail, and will shop thrift stores and consignment for quality items only. You don't buy Walmart items in a thrift store . A friend who is also an RN just dropped a couple grand or more on a purse. I don't know Louie and he don't know me, so I will not contribute to the descendants college fund.
My mom used to call it "grab yourself" night. It sounds dirty when I type it out, but it's just something we said for years. I usually grabbed cereal. Can't go wrong!
Good point. I love it. Fend for yourself night!! I caved in and went out to dinner with my son the other night. I was tired. The restaurant was closing so we took it home. But, if I saved that money and gave it to him that could have been a great teaching moment and HE could have been $70,00 richer!
I only make about 19,000 a year, but I have 7000 in the savings, and zero debt! I paid off my car right when I bought it. Im investing about 100$ a month, and my college classes are being paid for by the military :P
There are a lot of good jobs out there with tuition assistance and other good benefits packages that actively seek veterans. You can make WAY more than $19K/yr. Apply for a big-city municipal position. Apply at railroads. Double, triple, or quadruple your job income and get a good benefits pkg.
da'Jon Gee you just got to be focused while working I used to have this one person who tried to trick me into buying restaurant food every day and spend money then call me cheap because I was so focused on my goal but business before pleasure any day
Love this guys attitude ... so honest and down to earth. I have a degree in Social Science and have heard so many excuses that people make about being in debt. Dave hits these issues head on. Well done. .🌞
I was $56k in debt in the beginning of 2018, as of 10/27/2018 I became debt free and now at 11/6/2018 I already have 4k in my savings and growing. Thanks Dave for sharing your wisdom on youtube.
THIS is the conversation I try to have with folks and they don’t want to hear it. Stuff, stuff, stuff. Live within your means and pay yourself FIRST (save). Great rant.
"I'm a cuss word in some of y'alls houses....that's fine, everybody's gotta have a gift, I've got it - I'm fine with it!" ~ Dave Ramsey 😂😂😂😂 I want this on a shirt!
The Secret to NOT Being BROKE! - Find a hobby that's 100% free. Jogging, Swimming, Hiking, Cooking. Not paying to hang out in club, not skydiving, not traveling to Europe, etc.
Ever since my first job when I was 17 years old, I've never been broke. I say I am sometimes to my friends but really it's just in my savings and I've never been in a situation where I didn't have any money
In highschool, there should be courses like the Ramsey Show and so many other shows online. They could be called "How To Adult 101". Kids would benefit from them mightily.
I can relate to Ramsey, I got my real estate license and started selling houses at 18yrs. Bought my first investment duplex at 19, at 21 I have several rental properties and a big 4bed house in a gated community. I had brand new luxury cars, boats and spent money like it grew on trees. I was operating on a very fragile and dangerous system. 9/11 attacks impacted the market and my income, tenants and rents prices dropped. I had a fourplex that had a fire and was heavily damage. Requiring all 4 tenants to vacate. The insurance company didn't cover 'loss of rents'. Eventually I couldnt pay the mortgage on an empty building that had no equity in it. I DIDN'T have an emergency fund, I used expensive financing and subsequently went broke, considered bankruptcy and mentally suffered a big hit. When many would've quit, I started all over again. I love the business, learned from my mistakes and many years of hard work to get back on top. I now have my highest net worth at 36 and increasing. Don't borrow money unless you absolutely have too, pay it sooner than later, save and don't spend beyond your income ratios and you'll be fine. I wish much success to everyone reading!
I wish I would have seen this when I was 18 and was making 45k a year. I'm 20 now and I don't have a penny of it. I'm bookmarking this video and watch it every time I want to "beep bop at Wal-Mart" lol
@@bigshoe84 the USA will never get out of debt. The root of the problem is the so called 'Federal Reserve System' which is NOT part of the Federal Govt, it has no reserves and it is not a 'system'. It is a fraud. To put it even more starkly: The Federal Reserve Bank is controlled by a group of PRIVATE BANKERS, and NOT the Federal Govt. The people who control our currency and our money supply are PRIVATE BANKERS. Think about that. Read the book 'The Creature from Jekyll Iskand' for more on the utter fraud that is 'The Fed'.
bigshoe84 : sure but doesn’t help when his plan doesn’t even reduce anything and creates the biggest wasteful military budget ever! Oh and 188 Dems just agreed to it. Unbelievable.
I honestly wish I could’ve had a mentor like Dave Ramsey when I was 18 years old, I’m 23 now with my grandmother and mother both struggling financially and never had a father so I look up to Dave Ramsey and other successful entrepreneurs for motivation and self confidence that I can make it in this world one step at a time. I’m glad god showed me a grandfather I never had to mentor me and show me a path to financial freedom and hopefully showing my own understanding to my parents who were never fortunate enough to have any educational understanding of financial education so I can show them what it takes to achieve it thank you Dave Ramsey.
@Mr. R People do it. Thing is, you're a fool if you just pick a number and think "undoable" without factoring in other life choices. For instance, someone who didn't smoke and/or drink their health away throughout their twenties will have a surplus of healthy years later on in life while the idiots who partied their youth away will have mountains of health problems that will add to an already overburdened healthcare system. Personal choices matter entirely in the long term.
Feona Lee Jones kids actually give you laser beam focus. I earned two college degrees, bought and sold multiple houses and invested all with small children.
Feona Lee Jones I had my only baby at 42, we had our home and nice holidays before we had her. Let's just say she's a teenager now and we don't have any savings. But you have to rethink things in life. Dave Ramsey is good
The sad irony is that im doing pizza delivery to help get more cash to pay for groceries and eliminate my own remaining debt, and yet most of the people ordering pizza are the type that Dave just ranted against. Hopefully that won't be the case with our culture some day.
swensation55 I started working as a process server to bring in more cash, much like delivering pizza but instead of delicious Italian American food they get a court summons for the debt they haven't paid. I see these people every day, too, it's literally my job to give them court documents for their debt. and they ALWAYS HAVE nicer cars than mine, usually a couple.
The best thing I ever did was work in finance as my first job out of college. The amount of people I met (I managed their accounts/debt) who looked really wealthy but had shed-loads of debt was very eye opening. I'd guess about 20% (max) of the people walking around who seem rich are actually rich. The rest are faking it all the way to bankruptcy. Never compare yourself to 'the average person' you see. It's mostly a huge lie! Recessions are very revealing as they tend to lift the lid off and reveal exactly who the fakers are. In comparison, I live in 9 year old tattered jeans, old boots, second hand or charity shop clothing and old gold jewellry that I've never bothered to update (I have one set that I've worn every day for the last 20 years). I don't have a spray tan, fake boobs, sports car or mansion. I'm also not on a huge salary. People actually offer me free clothing because they assume I'm poor! But I know for a fact that I'm now wealthier than 90% of other 30 year olds I meet. It's not that I'm massively wealthy, but that the rest of the country is massively in debt!
I think the whole "Keeping up with the Joneses" financial mentality is only going to become more prevalent with the rise of social media with Instagram and Facebook. It used to be that you'd see your neighbor's new car occasionally when you're out and about but now you're constantly bombarded with people showing off their latest vacations and newest purchases online. Willpower and financial discipline are more important than ever now.
CopticDuck I agree I’m seeing this one house at a time neighbor by neighbor literally right next to each other with new windows, new roofing and solar panels in my neighborhood seems stupid to me, solar panel salesmen came to my door and said 30-40,000 to install but I’d save money after there paid off (in 30 yrs 😅) I laughed and said No thanks and closed the door
I watched this video a hundred times and it change my life and my way of thinking! I just finish BS2 and i am happier than ever. Thanks Dave Ramsey for giving me the motivation 🙏🙌
People absolutely HATE hearing that. Mostly because people don't like to be told what to do. But you are absolutely right. I don't have a child for the very same reason most people don't have a Ferrari or Lamborghini sitting in their garage.
My husband and I just started to get out life in order. People keep asking us when we are going to have kids. I tell them I'm waiting until the end of 2019. I want to have a sinking fund and stable income first.
Yussef Saber That isn’t true, and just what credit card companies want you to believe so you get one. There are other ways to build credit without a credit card ya know that don’t involve owning one. I don’t plan to own one if I can help it and I’m currently still building my credit score.
What if you have a credit card but don't perceive it as credit, rather you never spend what you don't have. In my mind, the number on my credit card is in no way disassociated with the number on my debit card. I still live frugal, save a bunch, rack up points and build credit score. Using fire for its benefits rather than playing with fire.
I’m so glad I came across Dave, he changed my whole perspective in life itself... I try so hard to get people to hear him out but not everyone wants to be weird I guess, we are 4K away from being debt free and man it feels so good. I want to be able to live a life more than comfortable not tipped toeing around financially and we are almost there .... almost thank you Dave Ramsey you have been more than a blessing you’ve been a reality check! People crossed your path at the right time.

Don't ever go broke, just ACT BROKE so you never have to be ;)

Not Your Average Joe sounds good to me
I think my family thinks we're broke actually lol I find it funny. We have a savings and pay things in full so it's ok. But let's be balanced and be generous even in our wisdom of saving and investing. ☺ Its easy to get stingy if you don't. 🙄
Good tactic.
Rich Broke.
This man is an intellectual savage and it inspires me lol
Sylvester McNutt III Dude, I agree.
In reality, it's nothing truly MIND BLOWING. All he is stating is common-sense. Simple math is common sense. You really do not need college level maths to figure out a budget. The problem is consumerism and the ignorant fools who want to live beyond their means.
Kris Teth Ba Thx, great interpretation. Dave Ramsay does a good job of explaining too.

Don't just save it, invest, otherwise inflation will eat your savings FAST.
JellyBean Planner so proud of you guys.
You want a digital milkbone?
no donkey joe. i do quite well and am a red blooded conservative. there's no need to reply on a forum how well i am doing or not. its pointless bragging to an imaginary crowd.
Just dont forget to live! Life is not all about savings all your income for retirement...

"Normal is Broke!" Yep! Very true ... BEST rant ever!
Smileyyy21 congratulations! I hope to reach that level one day 😊.

In highschool, there should be courses like the Ramsey Show and so many other shows online. They could be called "How To Adult 101". Kids would benefit from them mightily.
hey man, I just moved from la to a small town in middle America for my job. Walmart is the most entertaining thing here and its free!

Feona Lee Jones kids are not the problem .. please system is the problem .. plan urself
In my area everyone has kids between 17-19 idky here I am 24 NO children. Now if I can only talk my fiance out of kids 😬
Feona Lee Jones kids actually give you laser beam focus. I earned two college degrees, bought and sold multiple houses and invested all with small children.

The sad irony is that im doing pizza delivery to help get more cash to pay for groceries and eliminate my own remaining debt, and yet most of the people ordering pizza are the type that Dave just ranted against. Hopefully that won't be the case with our culture some day.
That is nonsense, if people had the money they could actually spend more and I do mean their money, not borrowed money.

I started working as a process server to bring in more cash, much like delivering pizza but instead of delicious Italian American food they get a court summons for the debt they haven't paid. I see these people every day, too, it's literally my job to give them court documents for their debt. and they ALWAYS HAVE nicer cars than mine, usually a couple.
sounds like a dangerous job.
You and me both my friend! It's absolutely mind-boggling.
Change your habits change your life.
kids are a luxury. dont have them if u cant pay for them, and no gov't assistance is not the way to go
People absolutely HATE hearing that. Mostly because people don't like to be told what to do. But you are absolutely right. I don't have a child for the very same reason most people don't have a Ferrari or Lamborghini sitting in their garage.
corsican lulu Definitely.....
I have one and I'm done.
Shaun Daskam while not having children if you can't afford them is sound advice, this comparison with the Ferrari is stupid
My husband and I just started to get out life in order. People keep asking us when we are going to have kids. I tell them I'm waiting until the end of 2019. I want to have a sinking fund and stable income first.
no credit card = no debt
@Yussef Saber Sure, but..uhm. I mean you could always go full rogue and just save up cold, hard $$$
@Yussef Saber goodluck if it doesn't do well.
False I’ve got no credit card and 30k in student loan debt lol :(
I use to be that way. Not no more! Debt free now. Thanks Dave!!! It feels great to pay myself and not the lender.
I love this man. I wish I had someone like him in my life growing up
I loveeeeee how straight forward he is!! 😂😂 so happy I found him.
IKR
He claimed bankruptcy you know?
I’m so glad I came across Dave, he changed my whole perspective in life itself... I try so hard to get people to hear him out but not everyone wants to be weird I guess, we are 4K away from being debt free and man it feels so good. I want to be able to live a life more than comfortable not tipped toeing around financially and we are almost there .... almost thank you Dave Ramsey you have been more than a blessing you’ve been a reality check! People crossed your path at the right time.
