I wish they kept the fact that Jay was a really intelligent inventor who would be goofy and eccentric sometimes, and have panic attacks, but the last time season with him being intelligent or an inventor was Hunted, in the earlier seasons he’s my favorite, but after they erased such a big part of his character Cole is my favorite

Good characterization for the ninja? That's true only for Jay and Lloyd, but Nya and Kai were so bad. Season 5 had an equally good villain and better characterization for the ninja. The oni trilogy also beats season 6 in everything you've listed. But I agree that season 6 is not as bad as people say, and I love its finale

      @@zarkahmed3199 Wdym? Nya is better here than she was in the Oni trilogy. She has a right to be pissed for being labeled the girl ninja and having her identity defined by someone else. She also gets less annoying as the season goes on. Meaniwhile in the oni trilogy she just gets one talk with Harumi about girl power, deals with Lloyd's whiny ass in season 9, and gets 'married' to Jay. She does a whole lot more for herself in this season in my opinion. As for Kai he's also better than in the Oni trilogy as in his character actually matches who he is instead of just a shell of his former self like he has been since season 8-15 (Season 16 seems to be getting his character right so far in my eyes) I just have a problem with post-movie Kai in general so even if his character in season 6 is pretty weak it's at least true to who he is.     Something I noticed while watching the season was that Nadakhan’s orange skin contrasts with Jay’s blue gi. Almost as a way of demonstrating that Nadakhan is basically the antithesis to Jay;
Jay fights with gadgets and his lightning powers, while Nadakhan defeats his enemies by manipulating them into being wished away.
Nadakhan’s actions are made from a desire to honor his father, while Jay learns to move past his father’s dishonest love tactics.
And of course, Jay gives Nya a choice, Nadakhan does not.

I agree with everything you've said, except one thing. I think Jay did have a permanent character change after skybound.
Overall, he comes off as less selfish and more well mannered for the rest of the series.
Before skybound, Jay had this obnoxious air to him. He wanted to throw center to attention all the time and would force himself into the spotlight.
From skybound on, he's still a jokester, but he's content mostly being in the background and giving other people on the team a chance to shine.
Being a jay stan from the beginning, and I was really frustrated my first watch through that after the masterpiece that is skybound, there was a significant lack of Jay antics in the rest of the seasons. But that could just be me though.
If you compare skybound to prime empire, both have a simular shtick, Jay slowly losing all his friends until he's the only one left. However, the big difference in character is how Jay reacts to losing his friends.
In prime empire, Jay was driven by the loss of his friends.
In skybound, even though his friends were disappearing, his selfishness was driving him (not that he didnt care, but he was too self centered to focus on anything else besides nya). It's only after he loss everything that he realized he was selfish.
That and nya calls him out in skybound. I think the turning point of the character is when he asks nya what she wants, rather than forcing her into what he wants. It was the nessassary setup for the healthy relationship for the rest of the series.
(Side tangent: I hear old Jaya get a lot of slack, with people saying they wished they could watch newer Jaya moments with the old not great, unhealthy Jaya moments of rebooted and skybound. But like... you needed unhealthy Jaya to get to healthy Jaya. Jay wasn't good for a relationship and because of his character flaws, and it made the relationship fail. It makes the ship even better, knowing Jay had to learn and grow into modern Jaya.)
But even just how Jay treats nya is completely different from skybound on. Pre-skybound, his relationship is about him. He cares about her, but only through the lens of 'nya makes me happy'. He talks about himself constantly, makes stuff up to impress nya, is easily jealous etc etc.
But then after skybound, he's empathetic towards nya, and helps her out, and makes sure she's okay, and doesn't ask anything of her in return. Now, the relationship is about nya, not himself. He gives her space to be her own person, and is the best supportive boyfriend come seabound. I can think of infinite examples in the series post skybound where Jay puts nya first. Which he would never do before skybound.
So yeah, the change is permanent. Jay is one of the few characters that has a permanent character change and I'm here for it. He's by far my davourite character in the show.

Very nice argument except the part of saying you were a Jay Stan. Being a Stan in general is awful. I doubt you meant that, and probably meant fan, but Stan means stalker fan. I would hate to see stan being normalized. Like with the awful dream stans, they could say “you just don’t like dream” No, the problem is being a stalker fan of anything. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! there's a lot of hate for skybound, and though i understand some of people's points about the plotline, jay's development here was simply fantastic. as a jay fan since the show first aired, it was so happy to see him get his time to shine and be a badass and a leader. it showed how although he may panic when things are bad, he still holds the same ideology that a ninja never quits, just like the rest of the team. and i loved how this season showcased some of his insecurities about his upbringing and overall role within the team. and i think a lot about the line from nadakhan about how jay's sense of humor masks his fear and pain... it's so well done, and it makes jay's line in s9 about how humor can help in the darkest of moments even more poignant. anyways, i'm rambling (what do you expect from a jay stan, lol) but thank you so much for this! excellent breakdown!

The story between Jay and Nya is really well done and Nadakhan is one of the best villains the show has ever had. He’s literally come to closest to winning out of any buddy in the whole show (yes even closer than the overlord). I don’t really understand why people don’t like this season. I’m pretty sure they don’t like it because of the ending but personally I love the ending. This is a “kids” show so after everything that had happened in the season the only way for it to end was for things to go back to normal. Thanks for igniting my passion for Skybound. As a child I
was in awe how Skybound was distant from other seasons. And how tangible of a threat
Nadakhan poses, while seeing an almost apocalyptic presence encompass Ninjago. Putting
pressure on the ninja as they succumb to Nadakhan djinn blade.
Whist exploring the desperate and hubris but ultimately redeeming
and honourable actions of Jay as the season unfolds. Jay is personally one of
the most fascinating characters during this season. And it was fulfilling to
see how he developed through the season and endured mental and physical agony abord
the Misfortune's Keep: his determination is commendable as he was implored to ‘wish
it all away’. These mature themes and interactions were unusual to see in most
    shows during this time.
This was amplified through the character of Nya, who made Jay’s
sheer determination well-founded as their relationship rekindled without the
    disturbance of the other Ninja.

I like how they were able to naturally set up the conflict between what Jay wanted for himself and what Jay wanted for others. When Jay wished to not have been born in a junkyard, we see his reaction to what could have been his destiny, and the raw emotion of finding out that not everything is what he once believed it was. When Clouse wished for his spell book, Nadakhan mentioned that he hadn't specified for how long. When Kai wished to be taken back, Nadakhan was able to twist the phrasing as backwards in time, rather than back to Ninjago City.
Overall, I'd say Nadakhan is the second-best villain to Morro. He was able to divide and conquer most of the Ninja while (technically) staying true to the words he heard.

Seasons 4-6 were really the peak of Ninjago. Everything before that was great too, but the villains, story, characters, and overall writing was kicked into next gear for 4-6. Unfortunately everything after that has pretty much been tolerable at best :(

I love Skybound but I am a bit bothered that the season was basically just to establish Jaya, I just really like the plot and the side characters. And Nahdahkhan is more psychological than brute force and violent intimidation, Jay seasons are so of the best ones in my opinion because he’s expanded upon, but in the other ninja’s seasons his character goes from ‘super cool donut’ to ‘bagel’ if you understand what I’m saying.

Ninjago is great, I've been binging it recently and even though I know it was supposed only to sell some toys, I think the authors really put a lot of effort on each season, making some great character arcs and developing the world from just some vague sentences to something alive and credible, with my only critiques being that in every season after season 3 the ninjas suffer a hard reset in their fighting power, in special, on the sky bound where they get captured by sheer force of plot shield on the Ronin.

    I. WAS. WANTING. SOMEONE. TO. BRING. THIS. UP!!
Everything I basically thought about this season you talked about! I’ve always loved Skybound and it’s character development for Jay! It felt so satisfying to see you actually bring up how he got reverted of his development after S6, (aside from his relationship with Nya) because I think that is, not just a problem for Jay, but it affects all of Ninjago! Keep in mind, this is just my opinion but, ever since SOG, I’ve felt that the writers were always having to force a joke or funny scene, with the cost of making their otherwise smart or usually competent characters, say or do stupid things that’d otherwise NEVER happened in something like the older seasons. For example: Kai has basically become a punching bag ever since Hands Of Time. He acts more like a watered down version of his already not the most unique personality, he has to make at least one pointless joke every season now, and he cannot even competently fight on his own without accidentally damaging something and than the other ninja get a “Did you seriously just do that?” line. This reverted development also effects the other Ninjas too.
Anyway back to Skybound, I honestly think this season has the best plot progression of any other season, I absolutely love how it brought back old characters such as Skylor and Dareth, Nadakhan was also a fantastic villain, and Skybound has some of THE best Ninjago scenes ever! I still come back to the final episode just because of how good it was! Well, I hope I didn’t ramble on too long but I love to talk about things! You’ve earned yourself a new sub! I look forward to your other content! 😁❤️

Can we also talk about how Nadakan isn't a mustache twirling villain? Like his entire motivation is getting his loved one back, rebuilding his home, and gaining the ability to grant any wish he wants. he doesn't want to rule Ninjago, he wants to just live his life with his Dalara.
That's not an evil character. Sure he's conniving, but he's not doing anything particularly evil.

Great video, I agree with most of it except for you saying jay regressed in the following seasons, jay's development in skybound stays consistent and resurfaces at various moments in post-sky-bound seasons, he never changed his personality he just learned a season that made him grown as a person
It might have looked like he had changed way more because his personality was more serious at the end of skybound compared to his usual self, but that was because he was reacting appropriately to a serious situation when he had to lead, which to be clear is still incredible big for jay since he used to be the first crack under pressure, and if it wasn't for his friends he was the type that would give up on at those moments,
However, after skybound he never went as far as to give up even though he would still crack under pressure (because that's in his nature) when he needed to act he didn't need a peep talk by his parents again, even if he was afraid he would come through, being that in more obvious moments like prime empire where he pulled a skybound by saving his friends and solving the situation by the end alone (basically on his own), or in smaller scenes like I hands of time when jay builds a badass bike saves his friends and his mother and causes such an impression even his friends wonder what happened to him (a pretty obvious reference to his development in sky bound)
And I understand wanting characters to change permanently but that's not really a realistic expectation for long running serialized stories, they are made so viewers can jump through at any time so changing the characters too much isn't a great idea for this type of story, it can alienate fans that only came back to the story now and is also a risky move to old fans (just look at kai, after multiple seasons of having the same arc of learning to manage his anger he because a more chill dude and a bunch of his fans don't like how much he has changed)
But that's not to say characters don't change, it's just that their growth is more subtle and actually looks like how people usually actually grow as a person in real life, instead of completely changing their personality they learn lessons that make them act differently in certain situation where it actually matters

But I like to believe he’s stronger than he looks. I’m starting to like skybound the more I rewatch it. It’s such a nice concept and yeah I almost didn’t notice nodakan is the only villain who doesn’t fight much like Chen but at least he doesn’t use someone to do his dirty work. Nodakan does things himself and he’s very smart.

skybound fr is my favourite season ever. I stoped watching when I was around 12/13 when season 2 endet and for some "unknown" reason I thought the show was over. THen later I was like damn 4 more seasons. Jay was always one on the higher rankings of mine but Kai was literally owning number 1. This season kinda changed it and now Kai and Jay a sharing that number 1 place.
Also there is so much that changed between Jay and Nya during this season and makes no sense to the others. I mean imagine being Kai and seeing you sister going from disliking/ being distanced from Jay to loving him in the matter of a second.

  • @WordsOfTheTeacher
    @WordsOfTheTeacher 2 года назад +16

Really good essay but I wouldn't exactly say Jay is no longer resilient or it didn't stick around after this season. It's just not the spotlight and the plot doesn't revolve around it. Sure Jay complains and spazzes out a lot but he'd never straight up quit or give up. Prime Empire wasn't as good for Jay as Skybound, but I liked it brought his resilience and ingenuity back to the forefront. In the end it's down to him and if anything would ever make him quit, it's losing Nya. But he powers on, comes back to the real world, *and* comes up with a plan all by himself to fix the problem. I really like that for both of his major villains, Jay never defeated them by fighting which is really unique for this show and fantastical shows in general. It says a lot about his character that instead of shooting lightning, he used his brain to come up with a creative wish that couldn't be twisted against him, and appealed to the humanity and emotional vulnerability of an AI.
As much as I wish all character arcs would stay, I kind of think some of them fading away over time isn't as bad as it sounds on paper. It actually makes them more realistic than a lot of other shows because it makes the characters *people*. Do you remember every life lesson you ever got? I don't. Even if you do, do you *always* act appropriately and never do anything that's an old habit or behavior you know you're better than? I know for me I always have to keep trying, I've had to learn the same lessons over and over across my life at times.

I really liked Skybound. Jay was really irritating and dishonest in the beginning, yes, but I love how the season expanded his character. I also think that Nadakhan is one of the scariest villains, and that’s what makes him so interesting. In fact I learned the Nadakhan Suite on the piano because I love his theme so much.
Sometimes I can’t tell if I liked the season for the events in the season or I just like it more because I binge watched it in a day with my brothers. That was really special to me, me and my brothers rewatched the entire show together and one of my brothers stopped after hands of time but I continued with my older brother. I think Skybound is the only season we binged watched together in that short of a time span, i remember stopping around the middle after we were called up for dinner but we went right back down stairs to continue watching. It’s a fun memory.

I really really love Kai, even though he can be a pretentious jerk sometimes. And I'm kind of sad that he hasn't had as much character development as the others. Like everyone else gets their own season exept him. I want to see him struggle. why is he always so arrogant and jerky, does it come from insecurity about his worth or to hide his insecurities. What are the lasting effects of not growing up with parents, and having to grow up to fast do to having to take care of Nya. And the effects of loosing his sister in the last season, I didn't see a single tear and most of the focus was on Jay not her literal brother.

Skybound might be one of my personal favourite seasons of the show.
Nadakahn is also my favourite Ninjago villain and probably the smartest villain the ninja has ever faced, he was able to manipulate and twist people's words, leaving everything they say to be subjective and said in a state of confusion/panic where they wouldn't think of the possibilities. Because of that, he was clever enough to pick off every ninja one by one, and only leaving Nya and Jay left. In fact, he technically won in getting Darla back and turning Ninjago into his home Genjago, if it wasn't for Jay's final wish Nya would be dead, Lloyd would still be permanently old and the city wouldn't be crushed by falling islands

I only recently started watching ninjago for the first time, and I genuinely didn’t care much for Jay until I watched season 6. He was an alright character, but I didn’t think he was great and he had a tendency to come off as a sarcastic asshole (I can’t tell you I would’ve enjoyed Jay if I saw the pilots before watching the show proper).
Season 6 changed my look on Jay entirely, and while I think it had a slow start, I was hooked from the moment Nadakhan started trying to manipulate Jay. It was fantastic to see Jay not only persist while going through immense amounts of torture, but also to see his problems with his anxiety be lampshaded in such an interesting way. I love it when shows break down a character to show you why they do the things they do, so needless to say I was glued to the screen because I finally got to know why Jay is the way he is.
From that moment forward, I wished we’d get seasons that would break down other characters and explain their behavior. I’m at season 11 right now, and up until this point I haven’t seen anything of that sort, which I was a little disappointed by. Hope we do get more seasons like this!

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT VIDEO!!! Skybound is my favorite season I've watched it so many times lol 🤣. Jay's character was amazing and I felt so proud watching him as a leader/protagonist. Nadakhan being a more psychological villain really made my skin crawl and I liked every minute of it (shoutout to Scott McNeil x2). The ending was ok to me, I personally would've liked it a little more if the other ninja at least had a faint recollection of it (ie. As a small reference, maybe one of them has a dream abt it or smthn, it feels familiar but they dont know why) but aside from that it was fine also I nearly cried.
