this season absolutely nailed Cole - well worth the years of waiting. the burst scene always stands out to me as one of the show’s most powerful, it’s a beautiful encapsulation of all he stands for as a character. also think it’s awesome how his family stories from s1, s8, and s13-stories told and created years apart-flow and connect so naturally. Incredible video & analysis
Cole is the bravest ninja of the team. Not only in this season, but he always has been. He conquered his fear of dragons, his fear of snakes, his fear of ghosts and his fear of singing. That‘s a trait he has had from the very beginning that the Cole haters just kinda ignored.
Cole is absolutely my favorite character. Fun fact: Master of the Mountain was supposed to have a follow up scene of the Geckles and Munce working together to build a statue of Cole next to Lilly's. It was cut for time, but I like to think it actually happened.
Cole's arc has been happening throughout the show and I'm tired of people not realising how good it is. His arc is about someone who forges his own legacy by realising he isn't his mother and isn't in her shadow and that he's nothing like his father. Season 4-6: Starts to realise he is own person regardless of what form he is, discovers new things about himself and his powers. It started from Season 4 because he realised he's not relegated to be a love interest for Nya or competition for Jay, he is his own man and he even leads a freaking elemental army from their jail cell. Season 8-10: Realises he's nothing like his father, catering and having an amazing dynamic with young Wu. This is definitely the most subtle change as it is more of the audience that realises his emotional maturity and how he's the opposite of his father than the character himself. Season 13: The final stage, stepping out of the shadow of his mother, (those who say Cole didn't have an arc this season are clowns) this is by far the most obvious one, you can tell just by watching the season.
The reason I would say Cole doesn’t necessarily go through an arc in master of the mountain is because he doesn’t ever change who he is as a person to achieve his goals. His character is simply given spotlight and is reinforced more so than ever before.
Cole showed signs of insecurity about his mother's legacy and especially now that he is living where his mother is a huge legend, in this particular city, he learns that he is his own person not Lily. Also he changes those around him more positively but his own positive change comes in his mindset about his mother.
Wait, so Cole feels like he has to be responsible and live up to his power, has a "No one left behind" mentality, makes friends really fast, it's extremely selfless, talks to himself in though situtions, is open to the idea of helping his enemies... Is Cole just Peter Parker?
It's character driven stories like this one that make Sons of Garmadon, Skybound, Seabound, and Master of the Mountain some of my favorite seasons. I hope they lean into these types of stories more in the new series. In my opinion, Kai could use a very character driven season as he now often feels more like another comic relief character rather than how he felt in seasons 1-10.
Kai technically did alongside his sister Nya! Remember the hands of time? It delves into Kai believing a half truth concocted by Crux about his and Nya’s parents only to discover that they had no choice! They were absent from their children’s lives for their safety otherwise Crux would come after them if they didn’t comply with building weapons for his future army!
@@archangelsupreme4963 That is true, but that was before the wildbrain era. Kai hasn't quite felt like the same character since the wildbrain seasons started, it just kinda feels like they don't know what to do with him anymore so they made him into another comic relief character like Jay. I will admit though, the way he was depicted in Crystalized was a step in the right direction.
Unfortunately, I don't think they could make a Kai season anymore because with the new Dragons Rising it is taking the focus from the original Ninja and putting it towards Arin and Sora. And with it being the new spin-off series, we most likely will not be going back the the original Ninjago style with main focus on just the Ninja. So as much as I agree that Kai needs to have his own season and regained character development (Not the dumpster fire that was Season 11 Fire chapter), it will probably not happen at all. Although I do believe there are some improvements in Dragons Rising with his character, some including the fact that he seems less like comic relief and more like an actual meaningful character like he did in earlier seasons, he will most likely never get a main focus again.

Master of the Mountains is by far the BEST season from the Wildbrain era and one of the greater seasons in my rankings, the more I see some amazing moments and feats that Cole had ever done, the more I respect him. And because of that, he’s now considered to be my absolute second favorite ninja ever (my favorite is being Zane, but Cole raised to the rank that passes my ex-second favorite Jay). Now that I think about it, Cole reminds me a lot on Leonardo from TMNT, they both have leadership traits, they’re willing to protect their family, and goes through their own struggles.
I hope that as many people from the community as possible will watch this video and realize how much Cole is underrated. The best season of the new Ninjago for me, and the best character. 12/10
This seasons made Cole have a purpose, he stood up for people who couldn't do it themself. Afterall, a wise quote from ninjago says "Protect people who can't protect themselves."
I cannot express how good your analysis of Cole is. Cole has always been my favorite character, and MotM **defined** Cole. The orchestration of his theme is also brilliant. I keep coming back to watch this every time I get chills over his moments. It might just be a kid's show, but boy, is it epic.
I would love to see a video about Vania. She is so underated. Her character goes through this amazing shift in the season from being a ninja fan who craves adventure to actualy standing up for Cole against her father. Her character is also a huge step away from female characters we’d seen before her. She is a kind and bubbly nerd who lacks some social awareness at times, and we get to see her transition from that to a strong and capable warrior. It’s also so sad to see that they just make her queen at the end because that didn’t seem like it’s what she wanted to do. I wish we could see more conflict in her about haveing to give up a potential life of adventures in favor of her responsibility to shintaro. I love her character so much because she gives more variety to the female cast personality wise. I mean when she finds out her father is evil she pretty quickly sided with Cole because she is so firm in her values, and she’s not even put off that Lloyd is distrusting of her. I also think that she works so well with Cole because of how similar they are. She’s kind, empathetic, a great leader and sometimes talks to herself (well chompy).
This season solidified Cole as my favorite of the entire group. He started getting a lot more focus and screentime after season during and after season 8, and it was refreshing considering he always kinda lingered in the background. Season 13 was my favorite season by far, season 14 is a super close second
A season about Cole has been needed since the other Ninja got their focus seasons. And while I'm still annoyed they didn't explain why Cole survived his fall in March of the Oni, his survival is worth it for this season. I still want the explanation, but I'm so glad we got Master of the Mountain. Easily a top 3 season.

Master of the Mountain was definitely Cole’s best season. I love Master of the Mountain so much. It was at one point my favorite season. (Now it’s my second favorite with Crystalized being my new favorite season) But Yeah, Master of the Mountain is fantastic! It did Cole justice!
@@robloxanimator6653 What I mean by best season is that he was at the top of his game in terms of character development. He was much better here then he was in things like Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu or Sons of Garmadon or Possession etc.
I absolutely LOVE this video. It's been so hard for me to explain why I don't exactly like Cole in the earlier seasons (I usually describe him as 'he's there too') but this video makes me pinpoint my thoughts much easier. I really like MotM for all the reasons you talked about and this video also reminded me why I love ninjago so much.
I cannot believe it’s taken me so long to find this video, but this is absolutely amazing. You’ve completely nailed everything perfectly. this is why cole is my favorite and this season is my favorite too.
Finally, I've been waiting for someone to talk about it! When I was younger I didn't have the media knowledge or vocabulary to articulate why I didn't like Cole, I just knew I really didn't care for him. Now that I've grown, taken some writing classes, etc, I see how the writers really just threw him into any niche they could and hoped one would stick. Pretty much exactly as you said - Leader to Love Triangle to 'Eat too much haha' guy to Ghost to Reliable Friend to...whatever he was up to in Hands of Time? I haven't subjected myself to that season in a while. In any case, they really couldn't find an archetype for him to fit. Jay was comic relief, Kai was the hothead, Zane was the smart one... If anything, they tried to fit him into the Himbo character of Big, Dumb, Nice. It was noticable that after S3, he became the butt of the joke a lot more, often because of his intelligence. This stupidification seems to have affected Kai and Jay in recent seasons as well, no?
I've always loves Cole as a character and always loved when he was on screen, What made me put more attention to him was his actor dieing, it made me look at him when he was always on screen
Another thing that connects wu and Cole is the fact that Liliy was also one of wu's students, she's the one who helped wu find out what garmadon was planning by infiltrating the underworld
I am so glad I found this video. Cole was always a character I never really enjoyed in the earlier seasons. By the time Possession came about I started to connect with him a bit more. When Master of the Mountain aired I had already been away from the show for a while but decided to give it a chance when i saw it would be focused around Cole since I'd always been curious about him. Now, Cole's eaily my favorite character because of his personality and some traits that I see a lot in myself. Thanks for putting all of this together
Cole was always one of my favorite characters in later seasons. I loved his goofy big puppy vibes. After this season, it truly cemented him as my favorite ninja. Would've been Lloyd if crystallized was a tad bit different. (Lloyd will forever hold a special place in my heart tho)
While Kirby Morrows(Coles OG VA) passing is still tragic, iw as glad that Cole got this season before that, giving Cole the Spotlight while we still had him. Rest in Piece Kirby Morrow.
I've always been a Cole fan, but I feel like MotM solidified who he was for the exact reasons you said. From seasons 4+ I felt like he was given more spotlight, even more so in The Oni Trilogy, but MotM really brought his character to light. Love this analysis.
Cole has been my favorite ninja for years, but I could never put my finger on why until MotM. Your video explains everything great about Cole so well and why this season was such a breath of fresh air.
I absolutely love master of the mountain. It’s definitely one of the best seasons in my opinion, and exactly the growth of Cole needed for his character.
This season is definitely a personal favourite of mine. I’ve always thought that Cole’s powers were really cool! Master of The Mountain really showcased Cole’s true power and man... I gotta say... Lily was *AWESOME*
This season brought Cole up from being someone I didn’t care about to someone in my top 5 ninja (This also includes Dragons Rising and unofficial ninja like Nelson and Dareth)
This, I think, is my absolute favorite season of Ninjago. The music is absolutely amazing, just that song in the intro! The final battle is epic, the animations are sooooo fluid! Cole is super well done, and the villain is cool, being greedy instead of an evil maniac hellbent on controlling Ninjago. Wonderful video!
I just wanted to appreciate the quality put into this video. The script, how well his thoughts and points were put together. The cinematic scenes, as well as pretty much everything related to Cole. Even I didn't know Master of The Mountain was this deep until I watched this video. Props to you man, well done!
Very powerful video man, enjoyed this deep dive into cole in this season. Definitely gives me a lot more appreciation for this season and how writing can be made very interesting even in a "children's" show. Well done! ❤️
Another banger, bendo bricks! Something I noticed about cole’s character that wasn’t mentioned was the fact that he tries so hard to be a tough and scary guy, he’s actually just a very silly dude with a heart of gold. And we got this detail in the pilots! Sure, the tough guy facade fades away as he grows to be unabashedly silly, but I think it’s an important detail for his character. :3
21:06 I really like what you said here! And I completely agree, even though Cole's motive and journy my be the 'simplest' out of all the ninja, that also makes it the most unique out of all the ninja. Having a simple motive isn't bad or cheap character writing, in fact looking at all the other motives in the series it's really nice to just have that breath of fresh air and it's done so well with Cole. Awsome video man!
I can put my childhood aside the earlier seasons may have been amazing, but season 13 will always be my favourite even if it isn’t nostalgic it is still amazing and a great representation of what a good cartoon should be like what a fantastic season and what a fantastic character arc.
okay all this is amazing (and MotM is absolutely in my top 3 favorite seasons, i'm just bad at choosing an order) but i just have one little thing that still sticks out to me: the Lilly reveal. it's not Cole who first figures out that Gilly and Milly really mean "Lilly". it's Kai and Zane. And they know more than just her name. *Cole has brought up his mom to the others before and they know she passed away.* like idk man that just really gets to me. it means he's talked about her before. it means the ninja, somewhere off-camera, have actually talked about personal things. maybe it was something that came up when Cole seemed a little too... familiar, almost, with grief (almost it didn't it him as hard because he'd been here before). maybe it came up after meeting Lou and someone asked where his mom was since Cole mentioned her in that fake phonecall. maybe it came up cause of something with Mother's Day after season 7, because while Zane has never has a mother Cole lost his and is keeping his distance. but they know. somehow, they know. and they have known. Cole doesn't mention her by name in "Into the Dark". it's only as of "Grief-Bringer" that she's called by her real name. by Zane. the only other team member with a permanent loss of a parent -that actually cared for them (sorry jay).- (it does get a little weird with episode two and how they're all like "are you sure you weren't dreaming" but maybe something similar has happened before. maybe cole swears he's seen something but it was just a dream and he accidentally woke up someone else. considering the ice chapter nightmare i'd say something like that is entirely possible.) the majority of the weight of the situation still rests on Cole's shoulders but more of it finally hits Kai and Zane (and presumably the others in turn). this is PERSONAL. (i love this season so much, i still remember tearing up at the ending and that was two and a half years ago now. it's the only season i've gone out of my way to rewatch more than once. it's absolutely phenomenal and even if the Shintaro Whip is so tonally distant from the usual weekend whip, it's PERFECT for this season)
Great video that gives me more appreciation for what I've always considered an 'okay' season. Thanks for the video, man. Keep up the awesome work, I love this channel!
Great video essay. Ever since I was a kid I always thought it was unfair Cole never got a full season about him It's so satsifying to see Cole get the spotlight in MOTM and see how he overcomes his inner struggles
One reason Cole and Wu are so close, I think, is the father-son relationship they have. Its clear that Cole doesn't have the best relationship with his father, but is incredibly close to Wu. In the flashbacks in sons of Garmadon, we get a sense Wu was something of a second father to Cole. But, Cole actually acted fatherly to young Wu, trying to help the younger version of his master mature back to his original age and wisdom. These two are close because Cole is the closest thing besides Lloyd to a son, and because Wu is a father figure to Cole.
It was probably just me being the kid but kinda saw him as the chill one, I never thought there was real leader just a team. Maybe it flew over my head
I'd rather say SOG did a great job expanding Cole's character, while MOTM did something else rather than expanding, it instead collected all his traits scattered through all the preceeding seasons, used them to solidify his character and finally paint a clear picture of what and who Cole should be. Kinda just reiterated what the video said tbh xD Two different purposes, and we did need a season that solidifies Cole so that his character can expand more without confusion as to what his motivations are, as long as the current writers don't mess up building his character in the future.

You are so true in every single word you say, but you forget also one thing which is Way of the Departed the novel kf TommyAndreason although it is not canon and isnt yet complete it really has wonderfully written Cole moments too.
To me the reason why cole’s dad pressured him to be a singer and dancer is because of what happened to lily cole’s mom cole’s dad feared cole not coming back that’s really good reason to protect cole.
Master Of The Mountain (and the Ice chapter of Secrets Of Forbidden Spinjitzu I guess) is just the best season from WildBrain RIP Kirby Morrow He did an amazing job as Cole especially in that season Also I'd recommend you to watch a video called "The Thing About Cole" by Corbyin Which basically tells you that Cole has depression
"I want you to promise me, Cole, that you will always stand up to those who are cruel and unjust. Always." -Lily, Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu S2: Dungeon Crawl "I made [my mother] a promise to stand up to tyrants... always!" -Cole, Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu S2: The Son of Lily Cole lost his mother to a sickness, and, for at least years of his adult life, his dad to what was expected of him- and he likely didn't have any siblings to ask for advice. He only ever got the chance at another family because some old man believed he could support the weight of the fate of Ninjago, several times over. He nearly lost a friend while trying to find and free another lost teammate, and gambled with his future in the process of saving all 16 realms. If there's one Ninjago character who deserves more recognition, Cole is a strong candidate.

I love Master of the Mountain, and this video gave me a new perspective, especially for Cole. This was great.
EASILY my favorite season of all of Ninjago. I was BLOWN AWAY when I first saw what they did with Cole here. Great vid bro!
Cole is the most underrated ninja
Woah, this is such an amazing character development video, one of the best I´ve seen for real.
Every season has its own kind of background song from season 11 onwards but the most calm and saddest one is for s13
I just wanted to appreciate the quality put into this video. The script, how well his thoughts and points were put together. The cinematic scenes, as well as pretty much everything related to Cole. Even I didn't know Master of The Mountain was this deep until I watched this video. Props to you man, well done!
I know it's a little late but thanks for making this video, Cole had always been my favorite, again thanks for sharing why Cole developed over time ❤
Very powerful video man, enjoyed this deep dive into cole in this season.
*Cole has brought up his mom to the others before and they know she passed away.*
like idk man that just really gets to me. it means he's talked about her before. it means the ninja, somewhere off-camera, have actually talked about personal things. maybe it was something that came up when Cole seemed a little too... familiar, almost, with grief (almost it didn't it him as hard because he'd been here before). maybe it came up after meeting Lou and someone asked where his mom was since Cole mentioned her in that fake phonecall. maybe it came up cause of something with Mother's Day after season 7, because while Zane has never has a mother Cole lost his and is keeping his distance.
but they know. somehow, they know.
and they have known. Cole doesn't mention her by name in "Into the Dark". it's only as of "Grief-Bringer" that she's called by her real name. by Zane. the only other team member with a permanent loss of a parent -that actually cared for them (sorry jay).-
(it does get a little weird with episode two and how they're all like "are you sure you weren't dreaming" but maybe something similar has happened before. maybe cole swears he's seen something but it was just a dream and he accidentally woke up someone else. considering the ice chapter nightmare i'd say something like that is entirely possible.)
the majority of the weight of the situation still rests on Cole's shoulders but more of it finally hits Kai and Zane (and presumably the others in turn).
this is PERSONAL.
Ive been waiting for this
Rest in peace Kirby Morrow you will be missed 😔
I love these videos bro, they make me realize how good ninjago is and makes me appreciate it
Great video essay. Ever since I was a kid I always thought it was unfair Cole never got a full season about him
It's so satsifying to see Cole get the spotlight in MOTM and see how he overcomes his inner struggles
I honestly feel like SOG does an even better job at expanding on coles character than MOTM does.
I'd rather say SOG did a great job expanding Cole's character, while MOTM did something else rather than expanding, it instead collected all his traits scattered through all the preceeding seasons, used them to solidify his character and finally paint a clear picture of what and who Cole should be. Kinda just reiterated what the video said tbh xD
Two different purposes, and we did need a season that solidifies Cole so that his character can expand more without confusion as to what his motivations are, as long as the current writers don't mess up building his character in the future.
For me that’s wrong, MOTM was his best season
Amazing video man! Gosh I love this community
Now that I think about this this season was probably a way to send off Kirby Morrow and His Character as cole.
I Loved Ninjago Season 13 Master of the Mountain
Cole was an Absolute Legendary Awesome Main
Character The Main Villain Vangelis AKA The Skull
Sorcerer was An Amazing Main Villain and a
Awesome ArchEnemy to Cole Cole VS The Skull
Sorcerer was Absolutely Amazing, BadFire and
Awesome Battle one of the Best Battle in Ninjago
of all Time 9/10 Season for Me 🔥😎
All of the ninja recruiting scenes r in one of the old books from when the show first started. and it took me so long to realize THATS where i know them from and that there was a reason not everyone had known about the scenes until the oni trilogy
master of the mountain was single-handedly the BEST thing they did to Cole.
Are you gonna do a full character analysis on all the ninja? Because THAT would be a dream come true! 🤞
So far I’ve done videos on Jay, Nya, and Cole so more are sure to come!
@@bendobricks YAY! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Master of the mountain and seabound has the best music ever
cole is my favorite ninja, cause he is a lot like me, for example, talking to himself which I personally share, hes also super comforting, which a lot is from kirby's voice
"it is important to have a villain to be an embodiment of everything the main character is against"
meanwhile jay and nadakhan, with nadakhan being a djinn prince pirate version of jay
This is the best wildbrain season in my opinion
What about Seabound?
@@LukeNinjago it was kinda meh in my opinion,it was bad, but it wasn't that good either
You are so true in every single word you say, but you forget also one thing which is Way of the Departed the novel kf TommyAndreason although it is not canon and isnt yet complete it really has wonderfully written Cole moments too.
This is why this season is my favorite Ninjago season.
Cole is my favourite ninja, now this video made me love him even more. Brilliant video and everything u mentioned in this video is correct.
At first I thought Kai was leader after Cole but even when Loyd became green ninja I never felt there was a leader
He'll always be my favorite ninja for a reason
18:55 to 19:36 words of wisdom 🧡🖤
Great video as always 👏
Cole is my favorite ninja.
MotM is definetly in my top tier best season of Ninjago. Such an amazing season.
You're back 💙
cole is my favorite character but for some reason its not available on netflix for me
After years, Cole finally got good development and it payed off
The Skull Sorcerer theme is amazing.
What The Heck do you mean he never stood out, maybe for people who weren't fans of him till later but I always stood out for me.
To me the reason why cole’s dad pressured him to be a singer and dancer is because of what happened to lily cole’s mom cole’s dad feared cole not coming back that’s really good reason to protect cole.
Master Of The Mountain (and the Ice chapter of Secrets Of Forbidden Spinjitzu I guess) is just the best season from WildBrain
RIP Kirby Morrow
He did an amazing job as Cole especially in that season
Also I'd recommend you to watch a video called
"The Thing About Cole" by Corbyin
Which basically tells you that Cole has depression
We absolutely need you to make a Tournament of Elements video explaining how it expanded the lore of the series and got the show back on track.
that one fight sequence of the final episode made me fall in love with the fight choreography of WildBrain Ninjago
"I want you to promise me, Cole, that you will always stand up to those who are cruel and unjust. Always." -Lily, Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu S2: Dungeon Crawl
"I made [my mother] a promise to stand up to tyrants... always!" -Cole, Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu S2: The Son of Lily
Cole lost his mother to a sickness, and, for at least years of his adult life, his dad to what was expected of him- and he likely didn't have any siblings to ask for advice.
Absolutely love it. ☺️ love Cole.
HYPE new bendobricks
