I really like her character but her brother hasn’t been good lately. I don’t like how Kai’s character has changed. Like how he wasn’t willing to sacrifice his powers for Lloyd, he would’ve been the first to put his hand on Lloyd to save him. And he has been so bland lately. Why did they have to do him so dirty.
Kai hasn't had much good moments as of late, but he's been pretty good S13 and up. You want to complain about Kai, but now's not the time to use the word "lately." Kai not willing to give up his powers in S8 is stupid, because this is incredibly out of character for him. In S5, he constantly puts himself at risk for Lloyd. How is it now that he doesn't want to give up his powers? It makes no sense. Had it been Jay who stopped to think, it would have made sense, as Jay is normally the one to show this behavior.
Nya is my 2nd favorite ninja and she has always inspired me to keep trying, face my fears, and to never give up. Her story is always going to be the most fascinating to me and even though she’s a Samurai now… she’ll always be apart of the team and I’ll always be inspired and strengthened by her and through the lessons her character teaches. (Quote From Hunted) “You’re not the only one who’s lost everything! I lost my friends, I lost my boyfriend, my brother- they’ll want us to fight! As long as I have my powers and breath in my body, I’m going to protect you! And you are going to defeat your father! Because what else are we supposed to do? Give up? I love how Nya's entire arc centres around control. In everything she does/is, she is always wanting to have complete control - and her lowest and most interesting moments come when this is taken away (ie. Skybound, Possession, Seabound). In Seabound she faces this multiple times, first by losing control of her powers, then having to work with her mother. Her sacrifice is the completion of her series long arc, as she finally accepts that sometimes there are no good outcomes, and she lets go of her need for control in order to save Ninjago. Now that she's back, I'm concerned that this will be undercut - maybe it already has. I think there's definitely a great story that can be told with Nya now that she's powerless and "normal" again, but bringing her back at all is also a huge risk. Seabound was the natural conclusion of her arc, so there's a *lot* of pressure on Crystallized to get Nya right.
Possession and Seabound really did a lot for Nya's character! Seabound in particular resulted in Nya dethroning Zane as my favorite character - it concluded her story arc in tragedy while also coming full circle in a way. Two of her biggest struggles were identity and choice, and after having fought for them throughout the series, circumstances ultimately robbed her of both. Another thing I thought of: I feel like one of the reasons why her character arc is so good might be that most of her development came so relatively late into the series, so the writers could take it slow and flesh out her character properly. The others already had their big arcs within the first 2 seasons, where the show was originally going to end. Everyone else concluded their True Potential arcs very quickly, realizing their weakness and overcoming it all in the course of a single episode. Meanwhile, Nya's first big arc came separately and at a time when they were more certain this show was here to stay, so she got ample time to develop instead of having to fight the others' arcs for screentime. Her True Potential arc lasted an entire season and personally, I found it much more enjoyable to see her slowly develop through interacting with multiple characters
Nya was my original favourite character from the pilots, I liked her attitude, but it didn’t take long for Zane to become my favourite. But seeing her become Samurai X, the water ninja, and literally the sea has made me realize I like her just as much as I like Zane, and watching her make that huge sacrifice was really sad and heart wrenching, but it was also nostalgic for me. You’re awesome Nya!
I never really cared all to much about nya as a character, but I think this video did a really good job at showing her development throughout the story and overall character complexity she has. Thank you much for creating this and allowing me to really comprehend and appreciate nya as a character!
(SPOILERS) And now in Crystalized, her fear of being powerless has come to be. I hope they do give that aspect of the story just a bit more focus later on in the season
Cool stuff! Here’s my take on how control is portrayed throughout Seabound through an excerpt of my Seabound analysis(although a good amount of it is outdated for now): The major theme of Seabound is control and it is explained through Nya, Maya, Kalmaar, and Wojira. Before Seabound, Nya fought for and maintained a lot of control. She believed that she was on the right path and that her control would never be disrupted. However, in the premiere, Nya loses control of her powers and doesn’t know what to do. Kai calls Maya, and Nya and Maya start off with a very rocky relationship. Nya perceives Maya as controlling, but she doesn’t understand her true intent. Through working with her mother in the first few episodes, Nya eventually is able to understand that Maya isn’t trying to control her but instead is only trying to fill a void that she created. This allows Nya to open up to Maya, and eventually more people such as Benthomaar. Now enters Kalmaar, the opposite of Nya. While Nya starts off with control at the beginning of the season, Kalmaar starts off without it. Throughout the season, Kalmaar eventually gains the control he seeks and feels unstoppable. Meanwhile, Nya eventually learns to accept the prospect of losing control throughout the season. In episode 10, Nya is able to gain the trust of the whales through her venting out her frustrations. She briefly loses control of her emotions and is rewarded with the ability to call whales. When Jay nearly drowns in episode 15, Nya once again tries to take control of the situation but realizes that she cannot. She grows to accept this and thus merges with the sea. In her new form, Nya loses control over her emotions and relationships. She only has one aspect of control left- the ability to control her path. Despite being relatively outlandish, this story really does pertain to the real world. A lot of “real-life” heroes have given up control over their personal attributes in order to allow others to control their own lives. It’s a sad fate for these “real-life” heroes, and Seabound’s portrayal of Nya’s sacrifice eerily reflects and respects these heroes. Anyway, back to Ninjago. During the finale of Seabound, Nya is more powerful than ever as she has become one with her element, water. Beyond literally becoming her element, she personally has, too. Like water, she is unable to control herself while still being able to choose a path. It’s a perfect and beautiful representation of the element as a whole. Going back to Kalmaar, he meets his demise because he is unable to accept losing control. After Benthomaar shatters the crown, Kalmaar is left helpless and insecure as he always had been without control. Wojira then takes over and faces off against Nya. Unlike Kalmaar, Wojira is now the complete opposite because she is completely uncontrollable. However, Nya is still able to defeat Wojira because she still has control over her path, unlike Wojira. She may have let go of her humanity, but she still has a purpose. Throughout the series and Seabound, Nya’s journey teaches us what control is all about. It teaches us to fight for our agency but to also let go when needed to achieve a balance. Some things may be out of our control, but “that’s just the way the cookie crumbles”. I really appreciate how Crystalized appears to be continuing her growth from Seabound. In many ways, she develops more as a hero rather than simply being someone who stood up for herself as she is willing to go back to her friends over further pursuing her powerful state as the ocean.
Curious to see your thoughts on where they're going with Nya in Crystalized. I've been searching for Ninjago character analysis videos for ages, I've only seen a couple and I did NOT agree with their takes to put it lightly. So great to find a channel that does character analysis and makes good points.
I must say when I committed to watching every single ninjago season last year, one of the most significant things I took note of was how much of a compelling character seasons 5-7 made her and then season 15 took it a step further and elevated it to new heights

I think that whatever you choose to make a video on, you’ll do a fantastic job! If I may make suggestions, though, I think it would be cool if you analyzed Ninjago’s villains. Whether it be just a few or all of main ones, Ninjago has a colorful rogue’s gallery, and I’d love to see them given attention too.

It's funny, I didn't think much of Nya until Possession hit, and after that season I started noticing those same threads you mentioned stemming all the way back to her introduction. I think she's an interesting case of avoiding the 'fifth ranger' syndrome by makinig her feel so natural in the cast by having a dynamic with them at the start. Ironically I think Season 3 ends up being her worst outing because of how the love triangle smears her and Jay's relationship out across the pavement to dry. It hits Nya the least out of the three of them but I wish it'd been done better. It gave us the setup for Skybound, though, so I'll take it.

Bro, I don't know what the fuck was Bragi smoking when he wrote Nya. I don't think nya was ruined in crystalized at all but i absolutely is her worse season and she needs an arc to recover from this.
@@adnanaboukewik4950 definitely think she was ruined. She spent the entire season doing nothing of major importance. All she did was be Samurai X like 4 times and then get her water powers back, which she also did nothing important with. Not to mention she gets tremendously victimized by the Mechanic (who the writers thought it would be ok to write him as being incredibly sexist towards her for some reason), and she ends up being portrayed as the weak damsel in distress. And, her getting her powers back just proves the Mechanic’s twisted, wrong viewpoint right. It absolutely ruined her character and it’s incredibly sad. I honestly don’t know what they were thinking and I’m extremely disappointed that none of them have addressed this matter.
But what could she has done in a vengestone arc? That season was a total disadvantage to her and the ninja right until the ninja got their dragonform. She and the ninja were both in a same disadvantage. If she even tried to contribute without her powers, she can't because if she touches a vengestone(or hits) or gets shot she becomes a crystal zombie. Other than that I think she could've done well in any other season well without her powers, but if she doesn't it ruins her character. That's why I don't think she was ruined. I know the mechanic taunted her which is why we need an arc to make sure this is proven. I think Nya is more for her powers but this season didn't have much time to prove that and we need to make sure this is proven. All honesty I want to contact the writers about it because I'm certainly sure 2023 ninjago will be a sequel series.
@@adnanaboukewik4950the ninja’s dragonforms literally ignored the effects of vengestone, and Nya didn’t even get one. She was completely sidelined while the others did all the big hero stuff. Her powers came back, proving the Mechanic’s point, and she didn’t have the Samurai X mech to help her either. The only thing of remote significance she did was send a signal to the Merlopians. They laid the groundwork for an arc for her about not needing powers to be a hero and then completely threw it away.
I’d say one thing Water isn’t a power of creation. Thus, she can’t enter dragon form at all. In ep 29 nya saved jay from getting zombiefied without her powers, gives jay the opportunity to go dragon form later on, defeat pythor, and use the golden weapons with the ninja to save ninjago. So technically, she saved ninjago without her powers. Sorry if I said anything wrong I’m on phone and sorry for late response
And then she turns back into a plot device, literally the absolute worst way to finish off a character. Hot take, but she should not have returned from the sea.
I’m curious what’s going to happen to Nya’s character in the rest of Crystalized, I hope the creators didn’t take her character back a step and that Seabound affected her future character more than just becoming one with the sea

I noticed this while going through the show, but never actually realised it The subtle movement of her character arc later explored deeper through Possession to Hands Of Time, down to Seabound is a good way to go, and although Lloyd will still stay as my favourite character, Nya's is something else
Let me start off by saying that I really like your video's. It puts things I subconsciously realise while watching into words and it's really informative as someone who aspires to be a writer! The thing with Nya is that she always intrigued me. Up until Samurai X she wasn't really a character, just a plot device. Even as Samurai X, I felt that she was definitely underused and it only gave her a tiny bit of character development. After season 1 she pretty much went back to not being a character. When she became the water ninja she really started to come into her own with three consecutive seasons developing her character, from which Skybound is my favourite despite of the ending. While she became very interesting, it wasn't until Seabound that she became my favourite character. It really felt like a combination of every struggle and fear she has encountered in the past only to come on top in a way never seen before. It really felt like closure in the best way possible. Even if she turned back to normal in the final episode, it still felt like her arc was complete. To me Nya is probably my favourite character because it shows how arcs, stories and changed personalities can continue throughout multiple seasons. Just because you faced a fear in the past, it's not by definition entirely gone. It's up to you to overcome it once more with what you've learned in the past and the present.
I love this Video. While some of the developments of other characters were neglected or ignored, Nya continued to develop. I'm just not a fan of what they did to her in Crystalized. She had her rushed development and after that she was just ignored ☹ i hope we see her as a part of the Team again. I wich Crystalized Showd us what Pixal taught about that. She became Samurai X and I'm surprised she's not scared of being replaced by Nya. Funnily enough, that's exactly what happened, but the season just didn't address the issue 🤷♀️

They way they treated samurai X in hands of time is easily the biggest reason why I don’t like/care for that season. Very glad they gave that role to Pixal but like you detailed in the video, they didn’t really do it justice. It would’ve been great if instead Nya wanted to give that role to Pixal as she felt the same of feeling excluded, imagine how cool that would’ve been! More respect for Pixal pls
I would actually prefer for there to be less fake out deaths, like Zane never coming back after Rebooted and Nya never coming back after Seabound. Killing of a character every few seasons to illustrate the dark and vivid sides of the show would put so much more weight on every characters legacy. Knowing that any character could die while in extremely fatal conditions would put alot more tension in every scene, nowadays when the characters say ''This might be the end'' (which have happened alot) just has no profound effect on the viewer as you know they're going to make it out alive in some way shape or form. Some ''fakeout deaths'' make sense, like Nya in Skybound or Wu in Rise Of The Snakes. Don't get me wrong, fakout deaths isn't the worst concept known to man, but utilizing it pretty much every season makes it so redundant. Some of the best and strongest episode in Ninjago are Character deaths, same example as before, Zane in Rebooted and Nya in Seabound. Imagine if they never came back after that, it would make those episodes even more profound, I think it would have made wonders for the show, especially as after fakout deaths the characters arcs lose all meaning. Zane went from my favorite Ninja to my least favorite ninja in only a few seasons, after his fakeout death he has lost so much humanity in him, he is just a walking computer now he is so bland compared to how colorful he used to be. That's of course the writers faults, but there is a pattern. Nya having the best characters arc is now back to where she was in the Pilots following Crystalized. It seems that fakeout deaths has both become extremely redundant but has also smothered arcs and ruined character writing.
I do like that she embraced her full power, but I wouldn't say I like the way they were doing it, she did it to save Jay, which means: Nya has made a life-changing choice, not to defeat the villain but to save her boyfriend, and all throughout the show, Nya was still something to be won over, this is extremely prominent in season 6, but also in every other season, both Jay and Nya have "character arcs" that are fully about their relationship, if there's anything else, it's about them being pissed about something, and when they have this little love triangle with Cole, and until season six, Jay is sour and bitter about their relationship in a really toxic and annoying way, and Nya is being "feminist" in the worst possible times, and they aren't even changing anything about the behavior, which makes me doubt that any of them actually has an actual character arc

I’ve seen people make comments about how Kai has been bland. I don’t think that is the thing. People fail to see is that the characters are changing and evolving. Kai would have given his powers to Lloyd with no hesitation but you have witness the ninjas losing their powers. Kai I think I’d just scared that he wouldn’t be able to protect Lloyd and that his powers would do so. The ninjas are no longer teens wanting to fight but now young adults growing up from experiences and dealing with past traumas and how that shapes the characters.
I do have a major problem with Nya, and it’s her reasons for being the water ninja. It seems like she wants to be the water ninja because she wants to fit in, and that’s what ultimately happens and it feels stupid. She should have stayed as samurai x and paved her own path, and not be decided by what everyone else saw her as (what she said in skybound). I will say Seabound did wonders with her character, and it is an extremely well done arc for her.
Nya's character arc was the most consistent in the show...
But everything changed when the Crystalized Nation attacked.

It teaches us to fight for our agency but to also let go when needed to achieve a balance. Some things may be out of our control, but “that’s just the way the cookie crumbles”.
I really appreciate how Crystalized appears to be continuing her growth from Seabound. In many ways, she develops more as a hero rather than simply being someone who stood up for herself as she is willing to go back to her friends over further pursuing her powerful state as the ocean.
Curious to see your thoughts on where they're going with Nya in Crystalized. I've been searching for Ninjago character analysis videos for ages, I've only seen a couple and I did NOT agree with their takes to put it lightly. So great to find a channel that does character analysis and makes good points.
I must say when I committed to watching every single ninjago season last year, one of the most significant things I took note of was how much of a compelling character seasons 5-7 made her and then season 15 took it a step further and elevated it to new heights
I never really realized how Nya's whole story is one huge arc, this video was amazing in showing me that. I guess it hasn’t helped that I haven’t watched beyond s10, so I’m DEFINITELY doing that now. Great video, keep it up!

It's funny, I didn't think much of Nya until Possession hit, and after that season I started noticing those same threads you mentioned stemming all the way back to her introduction. I think she's an interesting case of avoiding the 'fifth ranger' syndrome by makinig her feel so natural in the cast by having a dynamic with them at the start.
Ironically I think Season 3 ends up being her worst outing because of how the love triangle smears her and Jay's relationship out across the pavement to dry. It hits Nya the least out of the three of them but I wish it'd been done better. It gave us the setup for Skybound, though, so I'll take it.

Nya unlocking her true potential is one of the best scenes in Ninjago in my opinion, and the music makes it even better.
I was so curious to when you'd post this!! I used to hate Nya as a character for the same reasons -- but now, she's such an important character, that I adore her. They did an amazing job here.

I don't think nya was ruined in crystalized at all but i absolutely is her worse season and she needs an arc to recover from this.
@@adnanaboukewik4950 definitely think she was ruined. She spent the entire season doing nothing of major importance. All she did was be Samurai X like 4 times and then get her water powers back, which she also did nothing important with. Not to mention she gets tremendously victimized by the Mechanic (who the writers thought it would be ok to write him as being incredibly sexist towards her for some reason), and she ends up being portrayed as the weak damsel in distress. And, her getting her powers back just proves the Mechanic’s twisted, wrong viewpoint right. It absolutely ruined her character and it’s incredibly sad. I honestly don’t know what they were thinking and I’m extremely disappointed that none of them have addressed this matter.
But what could she has done in a vengestone arc? That season was a total disadvantage to her and the ninja right until the ninja got their dragonform. She and the ninja were both in a same disadvantage.
If she even tried to contribute without her powers, she can't because if she touches a vengestone(or hits) or gets shot she becomes a crystal zombie. Other than that I think she could've done well in any other season well without her powers, but if she doesn't it ruins her character. That's why I don't think she was ruined.
I know the mechanic taunted her which is why we need an arc to make sure this is proven.
I think Nya is more for her powers but this season didn't have much time to prove that and we need to make sure this is proven.
All honesty I want to contact the writers about it because I'm certainly sure 2023 ninjago will be a sequel series.
@@adnanaboukewik4950the ninja’s dragonforms literally ignored the effects of vengestone, and Nya didn’t even get one. She was completely sidelined while the others did all the big hero stuff. Her powers came back, proving the Mechanic’s point, and she didn’t have the Samurai X mech to help her either. The only thing of remote significance she did was send a signal to the Merlopians. They laid the groundwork for an arc for her about not needing powers to be a hero and then completely threw it away.

Water isn’t a power of creation. Thus, she can’t enter dragon form at all.
In ep 29 nya saved jay from getting zombiefied without her powers, gives jay the opportunity to go dragon form later on, defeat pythor, and use the golden weapons with the ninja to save ninjago. So technically, she saved ninjago without her powers.

Really like these videos. These video essay videos are good and high quality and the style is fairly unique for the Ninjago RUclips community. Could be interesting to do a little bit of a follow up to this video in some form or another for Nya’s arc after crystallized and her return to samurai x.

Let me start off by saying that I really like your video's. It puts things I subconsciously realise while watching into words and it's really informative as someone who aspires to be a writer!
The thing with Nya is that she always intrigued me. Up until Samurai X she wasn't really a character, just a plot device. Even as Samurai X, I felt that she was definitely underused and it only gave her a tiny bit of character development. After season 1 she pretty much went back to not being a character. When she became the water ninja she really started to come into her own with three consecutive seasons developing her character, from which Skybound is my favourite despite of the ending. While she became very interesting, it wasn't until Seabound that she became my favourite character. It really felt like a combination of every struggle and fear she has encountered in the past only to come on top in a way never seen before. It really felt like closure in the best way possible. Even if she turned back to normal in the final episode, it still felt like her arc was complete. To me Nya is probably my favourite character because it shows how arcs, stories and changed personalities can continue throughout multiple seasons. Just because you faced a fear in the past, it's not by definition entirely gone. It's up to you to overcome it once more with what you've learned in the past and the present.
Love these deep dives, never seen anyone else do them with NINJAGO, please keep up these amazing videos, you don't get the credit you deserve.

I love this Video. While some of the developments of other characters were neglected or ignored, Nya continued to develop.
I'm just not a fan of what they did to her in Crystalized. She had her rushed development and after that she was just ignored ☹ i hope we see her as a part of the Team again.
I wich Crystalized Showd us what Pixal taught about that. She became Samurai X and I'm surprised she's not scared of being replaced by Nya. Funnily enough, that's exactly what happened, but the season just didn't address the issue 🤷♀️

THere were a bunch of seasons that started to weight Ninjago down, but after Master of the moutains, it felt like the show found its groove again.
They way they treated samurai X in hands of time is easily the biggest reason why I don’t like/care for that season. Very glad they gave that role to Pixal but like you detailed in the video, they didn’t really do it justice. It would’ve been great if instead Nya wanted to give that role to Pixal as she felt the same of feeling excluded, imagine how cool that would’ve been! More respect for Pixal pls

bro went from a plot device to soloing one of the most powerful if not the most powerful creature in ninjago
I would actually prefer for there to be less fake out deaths, like Zane never coming back after Rebooted and Nya never coming back after Seabound. Killing of a character every few seasons to illustrate the dark and vivid sides of the show would put so much more weight on every characters legacy. Knowing that any character could die while in extremely fatal conditions would put alot more tension in every scene, nowadays when the characters say ''This might be the end'' (which have happened alot) just has no profound effect on the viewer as you know they're going to make it out alive in some way shape or form. Some ''fakeout deaths'' make sense, like Nya in Skybound or Wu in Rise Of The Snakes. Don't get me wrong, fakout deaths isn't the worst concept known to man, but utilizing it pretty much every season makes it so redundant. Some of the best and strongest episode in Ninjago are Character deaths, same example as before, Zane in Rebooted and Nya in Seabound. Imagine if they never came back after that, it would make those episodes even more profound, I think it would have made wonders for the show, especially as after fakout deaths the characters arcs lose all meaning. Zane went from my favorite Ninja to my least favorite ninja in only a few seasons, after his fakeout death he has lost so much humanity in him, he is just a walking computer now he is so bland compared to how colorful he used to be. That's of course the writers faults, but there is a pattern. Nya having the best characters arc is now back to where she was in the Pilots following Crystalized. It seems that fakeout deaths has both become extremely redundant but has also smothered arcs and ruined character writing.

I do like that she embraced her full power, but I wouldn't say I like the way they were doing it, she did it to save Jay, which means: Nya has made a life-changing choice, not to defeat the villain but to save her boyfriend, and all throughout the show, Nya was still something to be won over, this is extremely prominent in season 6, but also in every other season, both Jay and Nya have "character arcs" that are fully about their relationship, if there's anything else, it's about them being pissed about something, and when they have this little love triangle with Cole, and until season six, Jay is sour and bitter about their relationship in a really toxic and annoying way, and Nya is being "feminist" in the worst possible times, and they aren't even changing anything about the behavior, which makes me doubt that any of them actually has an actual character arc

I’ve seen people make comments about how Kai has been bland. I don’t think that is the thing. People fail to see is that the characters are changing and evolving. Kai would have given his powers to Lloyd with no hesitation but you have witness the ninjas losing their powers. Kai I think I’d just scared that he wouldn’t be able to protect Lloyd and that his powers would do so. The ninjas are no longer teens wanting to fight but now young adults growing up from experiences and dealing with past traumas and how that shapes the characters.
Nyas hair has the greatest character arc in NINJAGO

I do have a major problem with Nya, and it’s her reasons for being the water ninja. It seems like she wants to be the water ninja because she wants to fit in, and that’s what ultimately happens and it feels stupid. She should have stayed as samurai x and paved her own path, and not be decided by what everyone else saw her as (what she said in skybound).
I will say Seabound did wonders with her character, and it is an extremely well done arc for her.
I can see that for sure. Skybound setup the idea of her wanting to forge her own path but the resolution to that could have been much better.
