This video is extremely helpful, I'm glad I found it even though it's several years old. I just replaced a set of these solenoids in my 2006 Mini cooper transmission with a new set from a reputable company, and my trans shifts worse than it did with the old parts. I was told that the solenoids were calibrated to match the ones in the trans when it was new. Now almost every gear flares/slips badly and bangs at times. I've been in contact with the company where I purchased the solenoids from and he has suggested I make some adjustments on the valve body. I'm planning on making the adjustments within the next few days and the car can not be driven until I try the adjustments. I wasn't sure what the adjustments were supposed to do to help my issues so I decided to look for some additional information and came across this video. Watching this has now given me a much better understanding of how the solenoids work and what the adjustments are supposed to do. If I can't get satisfactory shifts from the new solenoids I'm going to see if I can repair my old ones. Thanks for a great video.
Hi, After watching this I decided to attempt this repair on my 2006 VW Beetle with the 09G transmission. Which had very hard shit 3-4 and 4-5 onboth up and down shifts, with very harsh engagement into drive and reverse, When cold the shifts were all good. I removed the solenoids one by one, opened the cans backside of the can by cutting slots and bending the rear of the can to remove the plunger. I used a 4mm drill bit to clean the bushings and reassembled the cans with a small hammer. After assembly I cleared all DTC codes and did a varied drive through a mixture of urban streets with lots of start stop and a run along a main road with varied speed restrictions. After approx 40 km all shift problems have been solved, for the price of 5 liters of fluid. Thanks for the insight, this saved me NZ$ 2,400.
Hiram! its really hard to find Auto Men like you. I admire your patience and dedication and knowledge and skill. A born mechanic. No substitute for natural aptitude. Thanks for confirming some of my own concepts on automobiles and transmissions. Excellent advice and the video is valuable to us non-mechanics as well. it enlightens us to what you guys have to do to fix some of this over complicated machinery and gets our respect.I do think that in 5 years we are going to be moving toward just driving the new cars 50,000 miles and trading them in and the values on used cars will go down do to repair costs.
I know this video is several years old, but it is really great. I enjoy watching all of your many videos. They are detailed and cover really interesting topics in great detail. Thanks!
Hi Hiram, I just wanted to update you on the SINS Solenoids. I have repaired a few o9g's as well, I decided to purchase these Sins Solenoids as well to save time and I have the exact same problems you had as well. I finally decided to adjust the solenoids. I turned the B1 adjuster 1.2 turns clockwise for more pressure and the k3 adjuster a little more then half a turn. The transmission works great now all the shift problems are gone.
I was able to get the exact same kit shown in this video from a company named Autottec, the kit number is K599778. It's labeled AW & 09G Solenoid repair tool kit. I ordered it off Ebay for $312 delivered. I measured the diameter of the shaft that goes up the center of the coil and it was .154. I found that a #20 drill (.160) fit perfectly in the coil bushings and when I turned the drill by hand it had a grey substance in the drill flute. When it was put on a white shop towel and smoothed with my finger it dissolved and turned into a greasy smudge. There were no traces of the brass bushing in it at all. The #20 drill cleaned out the bushings really nice. I inserted it in both directions and gave it several turns, just like the video. I cleaned all the parts with ether starting fluid because that was all I had available. Worked great! I have a lift so I had the car up. I didn't want to totally remove the valve body because I wanted to do each solenoid separately, one at a time. That way I could only disconnect one plug at a time. I removed all the mounting bolts and took 2 of the longer bolts and screwed them in a few turns in 2 corners. That way the whole valve assembly can drop down about an inch and all the solenoids can be removed, in my case, one at a time. I took a small jewelers flat blade screwdriver and inserted into the wire side of the connector in the center, gently pried up to release the tab and then the blade of the screwdriver would dig into the plug and push it back. Worked perfectly on all 6 of the plugs. The small pin holding the solenoid in will drop out easily if you wiggle the solenoid. On one solenoid I had to gently tap the back of the solenoid to get the pin out. Make sure you have something under the valve body to catch the pins when they drop out.
Hey Tom, you sound as though you have had much success. I am planning on running down the same road with my 09g in my Q7. Do you know if your kit is for the large or small solenoids…? I see there are different kits now available on EBay and none listed in your description. I presume the solenoids would be ‘large’. Thanks again. Tony from NZ.
I have this kit in my wish list just in case, my solenoids on my VB are small and they have chamfer in the back. I don't know if this kit I will do the job or not. Anyway, I'm putting a cleaner on transmission fluid and the result it is very satisfactory. I don't think the cleaner will do a instant miracle but I have seen that the car is shifting better every week. It is probably a long process. I'm waiting certain amount of miles to see if the solenoids will need a manual clean o not.
Salut Hiram, j'espère que tu comprendra mon message, tu déchire grave sérieux, méthodique et rigoureux. J'ai appris beaucoup grâce à tes vidéo. Merci de la France. Continuez comme vous le faite.
I have watched some of your videos, you present things well and I have come to really respect you for what you say, I can't say that for many men...well done ... you deserve the accolade 👍🏻
You are a car angel!!! You saved a lot of people headache and all the cars that you have fixed all the issues!!! Thank you so much for your passion!!! I wish all your dreams come true!!!👍👌😃😄❤️
thanks uncle for your knowledge and input about solenoids this was a very great video to watch. it was nice to watch a machanic go through the details like you did very well spoken i give you 10 out ot 10 for everything about this video
another great video! can't wait for the lectures. Thank you very much for taking the time to produce this video. I never knew those came apart. Love you work ethic man. Thanks again. Take care.

LeverPhile - the dipstick was fine ...but we got a dirty look from the shop teacher. He said - you know we have a load-tester. The bad part was other students were already in the process of doing the same thing after they saw us more ‘experienced’ students. LOL
Thanks for posting, Hiram! I sent you a message about working an 09G about a month ago, and I went with a VBX rebuilt vb because they fix the problem and offer lifetime warranty. Watching you tear these things apart has given me more confidence. I kind of wish I had a second chance on the repair so I could do it the way you did it. You have me wanting to hang onto the original vb, but core deposit was hefty. For anyone working on an 09G vb Sonax has a video about how to remove the connectors on the solenoids. They can be tricky, but easy with the small orange handle pick tools from harbor freight.
hello Hiram thank you for your video you know, its a big help for people having a VWand AUDI make,i know lot of people they happy that they learn how to rebuild the transmission solenoid, that you shown,,
hey Hiram, great stuff you post. I see a few people have asked about the solenoid removal/repair tool. what is it called and where can we get it. thanks in advance.
I was expecting to see the ball seat and needle valve seat inside the solenoid being cleaned, but it shows just cleaning out the bore of the solenoid, curious, is there a method to clean the seats inside the solenoid once its taken apart. Excellent to see there is a tool to open up the solenoids, great work.
So I bought a new solenoid kit I have yet to put on my truck (a 98 Ford F-150 4R70W transmission) but I ordered them online, its been having this lingering issue for a while where sometimes it refuses to shift from 1st to 2nd unless you let off or its warmed up. After it has shifted once its fine and all other gears will change no prob. Overdrive light did flash one time but it was two years ago. Its at 148k miles mostly highway. I have read that it could be a blown valve gasket but trying to see what else it could be. We have changed the filter and cleaned it fluid is still good and it has had a flush not to long ago done, and it never has slipped.
Hello Hiram This is great video you share with us.Thank you so much.I would like to know where may I get the tool (6:55min) you use for pulling a part solenoid please?may you share a link or you sell them?what is price for it please?
Hello Hiram i dont know if you will answer private message but i sent you one with queston on a trans.thank you. you sure make working on transmissions look so much fun and easy.
Hi Hiram. I just replaced the solenoids on my 09G because the transmission was revving then going into gear causing it to bang hard. After the solenoid replacement it does not do this anymore but now it is flaring while upshifting and an ocasional rough downshift. I changed the fluid twice to get the old stuff out of there and reset the transmission with VCDS. The solenoid kit I bought did not come with the two very small solenoids only the six bigger solenoids. Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for the video Hiram.
Great video Hiram, A few people have asked about the size of the bit, but I have no seen an answer - can you please share that bit of information? Thanks
He did not ever mention the drill bit size but says it comes in the Transgo shift kit that he showed in the later part of the video. You can always measure the size of the pintel or armature shaft with a micrometer or calipers and get a bit slightly larger. It may be a standard fractional bit, or metric, or even a letter or number size. Refer to a comprehensive drill bit chart that will give you all the comparative sizes in decimal inches to determine which one will work best.
Hiram, Thanks very much for your videos. I've watched all of the 09G videos more than once. I've just bought an 2006 jetta and i'm having these problems. I have a local Transmission shop that told me that the reman'd valve bodies and the transgo kits fail and can cause more damage. Do you check back with the people that drive these vehicles that you work on? I'm wondering if that is true. Thanks again.
Thanks, your video is very helpful. I have a Rover Fastback (825 ) or in Europe it is called Rover Sterling with Jatco 4F 403E automatic transmission. Reverse gear is not working. After changing the ATF - I used Dexron 2, 1st gear is no longer working. Also I have added "Mecacy"l additive for Automatic Gearboxes. No effect. If you have the time, your advice or tips wold be very welcome.
This is some serious stuff here. :) Since you are professional, can you tell me is it possible to flash or reprogram 09K aisin transmission that are in VW euro models to make it change gears couple of hundred RPM later than in factory settings? In current form D setting is way too economical changing gears too early choking up the engine and S setting too sporty changing gears around 2000 rpm. Would be nice to be able to modify it somewhere in between.
Great tutorials Hiram, Just about to tear down my 2004 golf 1.6 6 speed tiptronic , im guessing the solenoids are the problem as it jumps, rough changes after up to temp . You Vids have given me some excellent insight into procedures, thanks a lot !
Hi Hiram it's Rafiek I'm a diyer from sunny South Africa thanks for sharing such a very practical and informative video. The way in which you presented the video was excellent to to point.I never knew that these solenoids could be dismantled. On my Alfa Romeo it has a Asian AF 40-6speed automatic transmission when it's cold it changes excellent but as the transmission starts warming up I notice it's shifts are not smooth that's up and down shifts especially from park to reverse and from drive to park I get like a bang. Like I said when it's cold it drives like a dream even on the country side on long distance it's go well but whe coming into city or traffic it's starts to play up.From your experience do you think cleaning the solenoids could solve my problem can u please advise me.I did a oil flush twice already but it's was no different Secondly where can I purchase this tool. Thanking you I advance and be safe
Nice job Hiram. Have you done any videos on valve body work, especially Toyota valve bodies? Thank you for all the effort that you put into your videos.
Can't wait for the lecture videos. I like to see how things work, and automatic transmissions have always interested me. Also, have you had any Ford 6R140 transmission come through your shop? I just got an F250 and I am curious what the transmission looks like inside.
This is not VW related, but my sister has 2012 Nissan Altima with the CVT trans. Shd got a P0746 code (pressure control solenoid A stuck off) I read that people replace the entire valve body to fix this code, but funds are not really there right now. Lost her job due to this Covid19... I found a solenoid repair kit for the valve body that comes with harness, solenoids, and stepper motor. If i purchase that, install it and replace fluid filter, do you think it will remedy the issue? Just want to buy her some more time. Car runs ok if you're not hard on it...Makes some roughness and noise when you press the accelerator hard. Thank you kindly! Enjoyed some of your other vids. The 4L60E vids def helped me! Cheers
Gutierrez I am glad to see this video about Solenoid. I have a 300 Chrysler 2012 just bought it 9,500 miles four months ago now the car has 13,800 miles I have problems wit it when you started from zero miles to 40 miles it picks up really slow unless you put the the foot hard to where the by passed comes on then it feels like taking off. I took to the Dodge Dealer in Napperville Illinois and They told me nothing is wrong with the transmission or the car I asked them if they will aloud me to drive one of their 2015 v6 Chrysler 300 and They refused to So I am now dissatisfied and disappointed with this car that Iam$ 41,000.. with big problems and Full Warranty But Dodge Dealer personal services they are Awfully Bad when Fixing a problem to their own cars. Gutierrez did You the problem with my Car could it be the Solenoid sensors what did suggest. just wondering if you may have on answer
awesome video, thanks , we have a mazda 3 with 180,000 miles , when you first start car in morning it wont go into drive, have to wait for it to get into operating temperature for the trans to shift into drive, after that it works great... any sugestions? ,thanks
Hiram.. I have few quesions on Transmission. I am happy to donate to your account.. I asked this question to many but now answer. 1. how do you isolate valve body issue with mechanical issue with burned clutch. 2. when you rebuilt will you always rebuilt valve body.
Thanks for the video Hiram. How about an affiliate link to the tool in the description? Or is it a Sonnex product? If so could you put the Sonnex # in the description?
Hi Hiram first of all your videos are awesome thanks you, but I have a question ... I got a Jetta 2004 1.8t with a 09A. My question is do u know any way to try the selenoids or clean those? This valve body has 9 selenoids thanks
Hello Hiram , Ive been looking for the solenoid tool sets online. Ive had good luck finding large can tool kits. But what do you do with the small can solenoids in newer models of 09g? I found a small can kit but the manufacturer doesnt have in stock. Do you know if the large cans and small cans are interchangeable? I know that is one of the main factors in determining what valve body you have. I'm a VW mechanic and dealer. I'd like to be equipped to fix all versions. I really enjoy your videos and I have learned alot from you!! By the way my first name is Hiram as well. Thaank you sir!!
That fluid is very expensive. I am going to change the fluid in my Passat. I would like to get Ravenol fluid and give it a try. A lot of people say good things about that but not so much the factory WS fluid these cars had. WS is not the worst but a lot of people say it doesn't last long and that is not based only on the fluid turning black quickly either. My guess as to why it turns black easily is the dye. I have seen a sample of it turn purple in open air. Would the dye in WS be a moisture indicator? I only wonder because I read that it does absorb moisture similarly to brake fluid. That all by itself may be one reason why WS is so hated by many. My previous VW was a 2006 Jetta and it also had the 09G but used a T-IV fluid. Same color change but those fluids do seem to be very similar and that is especially since WS replaces T-IV in some cars.
Great video can I do this on a R50 mini It’s stuck in first gear. Dealer did the Adaptation I have an X before each gear still not getting out of first any info would be greatly appreciated thanks
Awesome video! Question... Currently I am having an issue on my 2014 Jetta 1.8T. When I put the vehicle in reverse, the car doens't move, just revs. It seems like every other gear seems to function just fine. The only fault code that currently comes up under the transmission is, "Pressure Control Solenoid C" P079500. I have done some looking up and it seems like it might be an internal problem with the transmission instead of the valve body. I guess my question is, would a new valve body solve my issue? I changed the oil and filter on the transmission and it didn't resolve the problem unfortunately. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!
Hi Hiram, given your experience and wisdom - do you think replacing the bushes is significantly better than cleaning them with the reamer... or is a correct procedure cleaning as you have demonstrated just as effective? Cheers - love the videos!
Where can I get the sleeve tools that you used to take apart the solenoids. My solenoids on my Camry looks very similar to what you are working on here.

No effect. If you have the time, your advice or tips wold be very welcome.
your a good guy man,God bless
wow great video, where can I find the tool?
This is some serious stuff here. :) Since you are professional, can you tell me is it possible to flash or reprogram 09K aisin transmission that are in VW euro models to make it change gears couple of hundred RPM later than in factory settings? In current form D setting is way too economical changing gears too early choking up the engine and S setting too sporty changing gears around 2000 rpm. Would be nice to be able to modify it somewhere in between.
Hi. Where can I buy the tools you used for taking the solenoids apart? Thanks
your super awesome man!! thanks
Good vid.
How would you take those apart without the tool you had?
Thanks for honest information...cool video....thank you...
Like I said when it's cold it drives like a dream even on the country side on long distance it's go well but whe coming into city or traffic it's starts to play up.From your experience do you think cleaning the solenoids could solve my problem can u please advise me.I did a oil flush twice already but it's was no different
Secondly where can I purchase this tool.
Thanking you I advance and be safe
50:05 the volume was good until you went back into the shop. Good info thanks for the video
you are perfect......................may I ask you for some clip regarding GM5L40 ?
thanks again for your kindness and helpful clips.
Shd got a P0746 code (pressure control solenoid A stuck off)
I read that people replace the entire valve body to fix this code, but funds are not really there right now.
Cheers
Great video, thanks a lot!
Thanks Hiram .
Hiram, good vid. Where can one get the tool you are using? Thanks

Hiram.. I have few quesions on Transmission. I am happy to donate to your account..
I asked this question to many but now answer.
1. how do you isolate valve body issue with mechanical issue with burned clutch.
2. when you rebuilt will you always rebuilt valve body.
I like all your videos. Excellent job. Where are you located?
Thanks for the video Hiram. How about an affiliate link to the tool in the description? Or is it a Sonnex product? If so could you put the Sonnex # in the description?
+saneauto It's not a Sonnax product, but you can call Jeff at Bay Area Transmission Parts and he can get it for you. 281-332-4419

Is the solenoid pack considered the tcc solenoid
Where's your shop? My wifes 2007 Convertible beetle needs you. Shifts bad from 1-2 and 2-3. How much do you charge to do the service?
How much you charge to do this? I'm in Dallas

What a nice channel. What would be your top 3 best automatic transmissions (reliable)?
Great video can I do this on a R50 mini It’s stuck in first gear. Dealer did the Adaptation I have an X before each gear still not getting out of first any info would be greatly appreciated thanks
good one , thanks...
Cheers - love the videos!
educating video, great one
Hey Buds...did some research. The kit he's using is the Transgo 09g. Look it up online.....
Hi mr transmission man can you tell me where can I buy That tool which store or what brand is?
Where can I get the sleeve tools that you used to take apart the solenoids. My solenoids on my Camry looks very similar to what you are working on here.
