    Hi, yes, you can blow through it to test it, but keep in mind that the fluid to the solenoids is usually under pressures of up to 90 psi. Using the proper pressures to test it is better. Yes, you can also test the solenoid with a switch while driving provided that you get the wiring connections correct.

    I took out both solenoids and they both clicked and when 12v was applied I could not blow through it no matter how hard I tried, vehicle shifts fine to the point that it goes into limp mode, and today I drove 9 miles and probably could of kept going but I slowed down and the service engine soon light came on and I went into limp, when it does this my engine runs bad too. Vehicle sat for 4 years. Could it be something else? I am not getting codes.

    What about Resistance testing, Is it a foolproof health check despite it doesn't leak? What do you think about a solenoid in it's natural habitat, is it prone to intermittent failures due to heat and dynamic fluid loading?
    Thank you very much for enriching our minds

      Thank you. Resistance testing with a traditional multi-meter is useless unless there is an open circuit.

    Can a malfunctioning pressure Solenoid valve jeopardise the mechanical integrity of the whole transmission....And if its replaced, well thats the entire valve body, would that be a sign that I must start preparing for a new transmission

    Wow, very knowledgeable technician. I have a 2002 Jaguar X-type, Jatco JF506E transmission, that will not shift in to 3rd gear, it's in safety mode. I received codes, P0758, P0748, both solenoid codes when I try to drive it. I was wondering if I can test these solenoids like this, or if there is something special about these transmissions where you can't test them? Also, can you recommend a good tranny fluid? I have a bunch of Royal Purple AFT Max I was going to change it out with. Great Video!

    Hi
    Great video.
    Could you please tell me in 722.9 transmission blue cap and black cap solenoids have to be supplied with same 12v to test or they should be tested at different volts just not to blow up by supplying more voltage then required.
    Secondly if one of the spring loaded check Valves is missing in 722.9 valvebody what could possibly be the symptoms
    Thank you in advance..

    Depending on the type of switch you are testing. They are what we call variable apply or on off. Variable apply switches cannot be tested using this method.

    is it possible to just blow into the solenoid to test it?
    is it possible to locate the wires going to the solenoid and run them into a switch circuit- and flick the switch while driving to see if it causes a gear change?
    Ive got a 2000 s10 v6 that shifts late into second gear and gives service engine soon light. I'm thinking its a bad trans solenoid.. never replaced one before but it looks like it will be quite involved. i dont wanna dig into it until im sure its the solenoid. Thanks 4 help

    I have a Hyundai Accent 2004 with 6 solenoids installed. When we do this test 3 solenoids we have this click but in the other 3 we do not. The model installed in my transmission is a4af3. Do you think my solenoids is bad or this can be normal? 1 have just 1 and 3 gear. Thanks!!

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 лет назад

      It could be normal. Not all solenoids will click. Measure their resistance. If the resistance is less than 10 ohms, it may not click like shown in the video because they are a pulsed solenoid. Best wishes.

    On this demo why can't you use a VOM and power the control winding to see if you have continuity on the output contacts?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  8 лет назад +3

      +Don G. Hi, the control winding on these solenoids only creates a magnetic field. The field pulls or pushes on a hydraulic valve or check-ball to open or close a hydraulic passage. There are no contacts to check. Winding continuity is only one of the three functions to test on these solenoids. Thanks for your feedback!

    You seem very knowledgeable on transmissions so if u don't mind I am having this trouble code on three different Korean cars -relatives cars- 2 Hyundai and 1 KIA all with automatic transmissions.
    the code is
    P0741....which reads Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off DTC.
    Would u plz guide me to what is most likely cause of it?How serious ? and how to fix it?
    Appreciate the help, Thank u very much

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад

      That is a common code that can be caused by anything from the solenoid, worn out shift valves, o-rings, seals, and even the torque converter itself. I am not familiar with those versions of transmission and do not know the most common cause. Search the internet to see what others have found. Best wishes.

    Dual port on 46re - get airflow from outer screen to inner screen. Activate plugs all airflow stops. put air to inner screen and air flows to one set of ports drilled into case, activate solenoid no change. there is another set of ports on the case that I never get air out of. Is this defective? got 2nd and 3rd - nothing else - starts in second as well. No 1, OD, or lockup.

    I'm testing the ohms on a 2005 Durango transmission valve assembly. There is one shift solenoid that you can access the terminals from outside the valve assembly - but the others, you have to open the assembly. Now, what would the resistance be on the outside one versus the ones inside? I'm getting two different readings on these solenoids...and the one outside "clicks", but the ones inside dont click (when power is applied). Should solenoids ALWAYS click???

I’m having a issue where the truck moves like normal in reverse but I have to give it gas to get it going in forward and most of the time I have to pump the gas petal to get it moving then it will go and shift through all the gears but I have to pump the gas petal a bit as I’m driving it then when I get to cruising speed I’m good like it’s running normal. Any insight?

      I hate to be the guy that says you need OEM parts but today I am going to be that guy. On European cars factory ATF is a must. VW doesn't make half the stuff that is on their cars, find out who makes the product then order it online from the your favorite online retailer. you save a lot by not having a VW logo on it and its the very same thing it is filled with from the factory. I happen to know that FEBI and PENTOSIN (CRP automotive)make most of the factory VW coolant and ATF. Another thing to do is put the Transmission computer into factory relearn mode, so the transmission computer will change the shift timing., this can clear up alot of problems. You dont always need a scan tool to put it into relearn mode, on some VWs you can perform a sequence of operations like press on the accelerator pedal turn the key to the on position and release the accelerator and turn off the key. just depends on the model.

    Hey there, I usually comment on UFOs but today my little 93 323 has been bugging me since i could only find dots of info here and there. Now because of your video and a comment by a veiwer, I have learned a fair amount about the solenoids I used a Ohm meter to test the connecter outside the F4A-EL transmission, a 3 speed with OD and a hold button. (A rather brain tumor of a transmission in hind sight) along with the earlier style ECM/TCM allinone computer. The HOLD button illuminating on the SPEEDO is also some distraction. This car was given to me because it is in limp mode but don't think it was continually driven afterward. Thing is now that all solenoids but the pressure control solenoid test at @20 ohms resistance. Now if however the PCS has been going bad for some time, would there be less pressure to the other valves and subsequently wear the transmission clutches etc causing excessive heat ? I didn't try very long and so it didnt heat up and shift past first and so would not know if the check balls per solenoid shut off the flow per shift solenoid. As you can tell, I been reading a lot on this and also was wondering the voltage to test these solenoids to get the click. I run of course the 12 volt battery in the car but not sure if the voltage to them is past resistors of sorts. I wouldn't think so watching how confident you are. I wasn't sure if i should bother with the car as it is old too. lol. If you have some sort of offering to me would be of interest and Thanks for a informative video.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад

      The PCS solenoid is normally around 5-7 ohms and does not usually click like the ON-OFF solenoids I tested in the video. 12-14V is the normal system voltage supplied to the solenoids while the vehicle is operating. There has to be a reason it is in limp home mode. Even a speed sensor or other TCM input can cause a problem like that on those early models. Best wishes.

      Hi , I was getting a 20 ohm resistance but did not get around to a test with voltage as i wanted your reply. Thank you for getting back to me !
      I will try that tomorrow after work but it is in tranny in car so i might be able to hear the click but wouldnt know how the seals are in each. Also I think i have confirmed to myself that the PCS is the prime suspect . I have only one tranny guy in town between the two ferries out of town and one other salvage yard. I am living in oblivion of the end of the planet and surrounded by only 350 cars and i chose this one to werk on. LOL, I think i might be MAD... Thanks again.

    What he is not telling you is that even if the solenoid is controlling the air pressure in this little test, if doesn't mean its good. The solenoid can seem good initially but when in use for a while as it heats up it can develop an internal short or open circuit making it useless just like fuel injector.

    What is the psi you are testing at?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 лет назад +2

      90 psi is the recommended maximum pressure since it mimics the actual pressure at the solenoids in the transmission. Have a good day!

    Shift solenoids are on or off. Torque converter clutch solenoids are PWM. As are some others.

    probably a lot of transmission problems can be solved with these solenoids, and they're easy to access, so a non-transmission mechanic would feel comfortable working on them ...

    Ok guys, your intention is good, but you have to practice how to make videos. It will help a lot, if you Write first a small "script" on what do you want to show, & the way you are goin to show it.

    Can a malfunctioning pressure Solenoid valve jeopardise the mechanical integrity of the whole transmission....And if its replaced, well thats the entire valve body, would that be a sign that I must start preparing for a new transmission

    I have a question can you test a solenoid with just two wires to a battery cuz I checked to them you could barely hear click but the other three you can hear a loud click what does that mean

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад

      Some solenoid types are just louder than others. Two identical solenoids should sound the same.
