Following Jesus Comes First - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, I’m going to be blunt with you: today’s Gospel is really challenging. It cuts right to the heart of the ethical implications of the Gospel. There's something of a “be all, end all” quality about Jesus, something of an either/or. As he says, “Whoever is not with me is against me.” What follows from this is what I call the principle of detachment and clarification of motives. If Jesus is unambiguously the center of your life, then everything else has to find its place in relation to him. If the good things of the world become more important than following him, then something has gone off-kilter.

Sometimes we get impatient. We think we’re missing out, we’re falling behind. But I’ve learned that what belongs to you is not going to go to anyone else. What has your name on it will come to you. Instead of trying to force things, relax and stay in peace. God is ordering your steps. He’s already lined up what you need to fulfill your destiny. If it hasn’t happened yet, it wasn’t the right time. If the door closed, something better is going to open up.

My husband and my family were my center but as I get older I realize that God needs to be my center I offer my prayers and my thankfulness for all He has done for me to Him everyday. I rekey on God and his saints for all the days I have left. He has become my center He has always been there for me but it is this time in my life It has become my center for all the days I have left. I pray I could be an example for those who know me. I don’t think I got “nervous” listening to this sermon. I got that Jesus wasn’t saying so much follow “me” as a human man or some cult figure. Jesus is saying adhere to my teachings first in your life. Put what I have told you first. I am not leading you astray, I am leading you toward a path of righteousness. Do this and you will have more purpose, more meaning, more happiness, more joy, more love, more peace than you’ve ever known. Thank you, Bishop Barron, for helping me (us) to see and absorb this message. Truly powerful. Your sermon has me focused. Thank you and God bless you.

Last night I was furious with some family members. I vented my rage instead of doing my regular nightly prayers. That rage was necessary for me to feel but to follow Christ I must turn the other cheek and the plow I must set my hand to is “love your neighbour as yourself”. My rage is legitimate and if I am to follow Christ I must give the rage to the Lord. The rage was my cross I am to take up and leave these family issues to. Christ. I need to follow Christ as the one necessary thing. I have some cleansing to do so I may stop looking back and follow Christ where my joy resides.

Brilliant! Bishop Barron nails it again, identifying precisely where contempoary culture is going wrong in its privileging of intersectional idenitity over the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When I enter my Catholic church and dip my hand in holy water to begin my Mass, all other identities fade away and are subsumed under my Catholic identity. We are all in communion i.e. one under The Lord. I also love that phrase, "a smorgasbord of religious options", what I call "supermarket religion" where you ick the bits you like and reject the bits that don't fit your lifestyle. Sorry, but with Jesus you are all in or you are not in.

Interesting: in the Bible, God consistently chooses the youngest of the family, the poor, the humble, the « losers » to fulfil his plans. Very often, they’re full of doubts, but eventually they follow their call. Then Jesus comes, invites everyone who hears him to follow him, and meets enthusiasm as well as rejection - but the old rule still holds good: if you choose to follow him, you must still be ready to lose everything.
It’s tough, but at the same time it’s good to remember that there’s something to be said for being what this world calls a « loser ».

In the 1960’s I was offered a job by an Archbishop in the Vatican as a translator. I was a laywoman. I had beel ill and was convalescing, but if I had not agreed immediately the offer would not stay open. The same with another girl, Belgian, who asked if she could first make a trip to see her father in Belgium. I was impressed, and left my health in the hands of the Lord. That is how I learned this particular lesson of “leave the dead to bury the dead”. +

This homily is beautiful, the road and outcome in fulfillment of the promise. But your life has been behind a wall, looking out the window and providing beautiful sermons based on the Bible and your "quotes" reference library. All of which I try to walk, according to Jesus. But if you have never truly struggled or subjected to so much out of your control with no fall back - it becomes challenging. My faith and foolish optimistic approach has propelled me humbly and thankfully to a place where I try to help others - who have suffered, i.e. Mother Theresa as well. Not comparing, but a road traveled. Your "moves" financed and with comfort do not constitute a challenge, nor holding your dog during shots. A great place behind the wall and looking out the window, but try if you can to relate to real challenges that everyday people are experiencing- without judgment. Good night and God bless....GNGB

The interesting fact is Jesus asks us to do the inevitable and be conscious about it. I love the old adage “you can’t take it with you,” or “I’ll be the richest man in the cemetery,” etc. Nothing is more important in this life except gaining access to His kingdom. Not easy at all going about the business of doing just that is it dear ones. Blessings to you Bishop Barron and to the whole world!

I think the song "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan is really relevant to the Gospel today. Thank you Bishop Barron for such a great sermon.

This is what Jesus meant when he said THE most important commandment is to Love the Lord, your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.
If your read all of the 10 Commandments, they all say this same thing.
Example, Thou shall not murder: Love God instead of loving your own anger to the point of allowing yourself to entertain thoughts of murder. It’s why anger is one of the deadly sins. If we ask God to take our anger because we are so focused on loving Him, we will never commit murder.

"It might mean you live outside." There's a lot of beautiful things that you said Bishop, that made an impact. I do, indeed have to follow Jesus Christ in order to get to Heaven when I die, but also now, so that I can live the life that He is calling me to live.

This Gospel is so powerful because we are called to give everything to Jesus. We need this more than ever. Learn your Faith in order to defend it! Remember you cannot be Catholic and pro-abortion. Look at these politicians like Joe Biden that claim to follow Jesus. They follow power and leave nothing behind.

I love the “scouring” analogy. We have to be completely free from all detachments in order to enter the kingdom of God.
Thank you Bishop for once again laying down the challenge for us in such a beautiful way 🙏🏽

Jesus isn't saying you need to abandon your father. Or that you need to abandon your family. He is saying you need to put him, God, in the central context of Him.

It seems, this is one of His Excellence's best homilies. For anyone who is challenged to make a long awaited change, these challenging messages of Jesus, which might seem onerous, speak to a harsh wisdom. Yet, it is fitting to us in the 21st century.
Who has never seen an situation where it is known in advance what sacrifices would be required like leaving an aging grandparent to go to college, serve in the military or join the Catholic Missionaries, the Peace Corps, work over-seas or emigrate. Or how many people accepted in-house jobs during the pandemic knowing the risks to themselves and others might far outweigh the benefits. What sacrifices have many parents made that might take them away from their children in order to get or keep the job that supports the family..
They are trusting that their decisions serve the greater good.
Following Our Lord, serves the greatest good, the evangelism of others. One knows that it is undeniably one's calling when he or she understands that doing God's will is of paramount importance. Unlike an obsession or an inordinate compulsion, it becomes one's only source of true joy because Our God is a jealous God. He is jealous for our love of Him alone.
