  • Have you seen on cosmetics websites those texture photos of just the cream or product? That is called a product smear or product swatch. In this tutorial I walk you through exactly how I setup to shoot these always in need type photos. For this setup I use the Sony a7rIV and the Aputure 600D Pro. Now you will now how to take your own product smear photo when a company asks!

    Another great way is to have a clear clean glass, you can use one from a large picture frame. And place it over the background, it will give a slight shadow as well

    Enjoyed your post. I'm getting lots of feed re: smear shots. I just lost out on a bid for a Neutrogena job so trying to add more smear and cosmetic pics. The Aputure is a good light for this but I use Profoto with a hard box or hard box and mirror. Also a good light for these smaller still life pics is the Profoto A10 which is super compact and you can put a small grid on it too.

    Your strobes have modeling lamps, better to black out your studio than investing in a whole new lighting system (if one does not have continous lights)
