- Found this one in my archives. Kimo Kahoano interviews Hokule'a crew member Eddie Aikau on Tuesday morning, March 14, 1978 live on the air on KCCN-AM. Chickenskin to hear Eddie Aikau's voice. At 6:58 listen to his original song, unplugged and pure.
The Hokule'a left the Hawaiian islands on March 16, 1978. The double-hulled voyaging canoe developed a leak in one of the hulls and later capsized about twelve miles south of the island of Molokai. In an attempt to get help, Aikau paddled toward Lanai on his surfboard. Although the rest of the crew was later rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Cape Corwin, Aikau was never seen again.
Thanks for uploading this! I heard the original radio recording about 10 years ago and have searched for this on the internet for years, I never thought I'd find it again.
His voice is so calm and humble. That courage to go out alone into the pitch black deep sea... Gives encouragement to be able to stand up to anything. Aloha and thank you...
Thank you so much for sharing this Treasure! Nainoa had it on a CD for sale around 2007 along with other songs written & sung by various artists for the Hokule’a over the years … awesome collection with 2 different versions of Eddie’s song. No one can tell me he was not present at the bay for the 2023 Eddie with life guard Luke Shepardson claiming the day of most epic waves ever … while he was on duty.
RIP Eddie Aikau (May 5, 1946 - March 17, 1978), aged 31
