    Jon, this is so cool! I have a small halfpipe similar to yours and while I'm able to do well with tricks like grinds, kick turns, rock-fakies, and rock & rolls, I'm having a hard time getting into full stalls. Got any tips for getting up into full stalls without needing excessive speed? I assume it's a bodyweight shift, but haven't unlocked it yet. Thanks!!

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  8 месяцев назад

      Hey man, many thanks the question. Yeah I find it’s a combo of a pump to get the speed and a pump to get up there. I find there is minimum speed or the pump to get up there is too hard and knocks me off balance. Too much speed and an end up on the deck? It is scary standing right on the coping, I had to learn and trust that the wheels would hook on and hold me?

      Hey dude
      Many thanks for the kind words.
      Yeah, it’s a little pump up onto the coping. You can also pump down the other side for more entry speed. You’ll get a feel for your ramp pretty quick in terms of the right amount of pump and speed required. It’s pretty scary to stall up on the coping to start with. So don’t worry if you feel like jumping off and struggle to commit. Going too far is probably better than not far enough to start with as you can just hop off onto the deck (hopefully you have a safety fence ) 😂 I came a cropper a good few times and this gave me the confidence as I found it was not too bad standing on top?

    Nice Job Jon. What age were you when you started? I’m 39 and want to start skating but afraid that ship has sailed. I have snowboarded for 10 years so I have experience going down hill sideways. Also wanted to know if you think I would be better getting a Surfskate or normal skateboard. Keep doing what you are doing it’s awesome!

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  2 года назад

      Hey dude
      Yeah, I started from scratch aged 44. It’s the best thing I’ve done and I like to think age is in the head. However I found I needed to change my diet, stretching and general maintenance plan to accommodate the riggers of skating? I recon you can get as many different craft as you fancy. More is more!! I have surf skateboards along with regular ones and enjoy learning to ride them all !! Good luck and let me know how you get on!

    • @gnarlycharlie1701
      @gnarlycharlie1701 2 года назад +1

      @@JonBishopSkate 44?!! Yew! Well I better get in the bowl. I live near Duck lane which I have seen on your vids so I’ll probably get up early doors and get down there before all the kids get there so I can get some practice in. If I see you down there I might try and get some pointers 🛹

    • @rushthezeppelin
      @rushthezeppelin 2 года назад

      As someone who is almost 37 and just started back after 12 years pads, pads and more pads. Concrete is harder than the hardest snow and also a lot harder than I remember it being even in my 20s lol. If you've got snowboarding that's a really solid foundation although there are definitely some differences. Don't know if you ended up getting into it yet. Also as Jon said, stretching is super duper crucial, before and after. Don't be afraid to ride when the kids are there too. One of the best parts of skating is most everyone loves to help you with tricks that they know.

    You shouldn’t wear rist guards you run a higher risk of breaking your rist

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  3 года назад +1

      It’s a common myth in my opinion. I play guitar for a living so have to use protection. The wrist guards have plastic sliders which when used correctly dissipate energy to the more sturdy elbow pads which also slide. Just like knee pads they are fairly useless when not used with the correct technique. Put it this way I have luckily never hurt my wrists or arms. My mate who doesn’t wear wrist guards broke his wrist!! At the very least they stop the palms getting grazed up, which is another injury I can’t afford. I can always tell who the musicians and tattoo artists are in the skate park as they are the ones wearing wrist guards!! Each to their own though !
