intheblues Damn, that's a tasty sounding (and looking) guitar! Definitely something odd going on with whatever plugin/nle you've used to do the lower thirds... Hope you work it out and fix it soon (hopefully before the next vid!) 😀. But even with the crazy lower thirds, that guitar is amazing!
Hagstrom Viking player here! I love it - no desire to change the pickups and plays beautifully, makes me very intrigued to try out the Swede series too
I'm surprised you didn't cover the coil splitting (both pickups are coil-split, tone pots are push-pull). Mixing single-coil and humbucker modes in the middle position could produce some nice tones.
Hi Dan, yeah you're right mate. It did have coil split. I went back today to make sure and you were spot on. The funny thing is the other Hangstrom Viking didn't have it so I never thought to check. 😳
All good mate. It's one of the features that made me order the Super over the Deluxe. Would like to hear what you think of the single coil mode if you get the chance to play it.
Hagström is such a value brand, I've played the Super Viking and love it. I own a Super Swede which is my daily driver. Does aaaanything I ask it to :)
Thanks for the video Shane. It really helped. Bought one. Love it. A few bits needed tightening up when I bought it, but that was it. Awesome guitar for the price. Love the split tone switches.
Great example of just how good some low/mid-priced MIC instruments can be. Ibanez has likewise shown that they can manufacture in China and deliver a quality instrument at a fraction of the cost, with really impressive, consistent quality control. I gave a hard look at a Hag as a low-priced '335 style' semi-HB, favoring it for the money vs. comparably priced Epiphones. In the end, I couldn't pass up a great deal I got on a super clean, gently used Ibanez AS103-NT. The fit and finish are fantastic and, at the price point, actually pretty stunning. It plays and sounds great. Eventually, maybe a pickup swap, but there's no shame in the stock pickups. Even the electronics inside are neat as a pin. Some great deals to be found on some of the MIC models. It just goes to show, if a manufacturer finds a strong, reliable partner and takes tight ownership and control over the parts, process and quality assurance, it really doesn't matter where it's produced.
Sounds nice, good 335 alternative. A former band member had one of these, only complaint was the tail piece started to rust almost immediately, like after the first three set gig in July that we played. They did replace the part for him. Good customer service.
I bought the Baltic Sea Super Viking last year, and, if you think the red one is pretty, the blue is spectacular. It's my second Hagstrom; I bought an Ultra Swede a couple years back and it's basically my ideal practice guitar; it's the singly-most comfortable guitar I've ever picked up, and love it. The Super Viking's also great, and Hagstrom's necks just fit in my hands perfectly. Love them. Also, they're a Swedish company, so the whole "Viking" thing does make some sense . . .
Hi Shane- First, and again, thank you for always describing the neck profile as you do. This is something most reviewers leave out and it's an important aspect (for me at least). Anyway, great guitar, great review, you're always on point displaying look, feel and tone of these guitars. Thanks man!
unless you mentioned it or I missed it , or unless you recorded this unusually or the amp was set unusually , in clean mode the neck pickup at least, sounded very clean, more Gretschy than Gibsonish .........is that how you (Shayne) experienced it ?
Thanks for the nod to my fellow Jacksonville natives in the opening! That truly is a “sexy beast” man. Gorgeous red finish and sounds really great and versatile, especially that neck pickup! ✌🏻
I tried this in a shop, and thought generally it was a great gig worthy instrument. Nice feel, great pickups and the 25.5 inch scale makes very familiar for fender scale players.
Would have thought a "Super" would have a Bigsby style tail piece. It should give some vibrato just by pushing on it though as it looks like it is hinged. Do they import to NZ?
I got to try the lefty Hagstrom guitars at NAMM. Really liked the Ultra Swede too. I tried the Super Viking and for the price it seems like a really good buy. I liked the look of the Fantomen but no lefty. Not sure if they offer that one in lefty yet.
By the way .......the HAGSTROM trussrods are designed very differently than standard necks . The truss rod is quite substantial and is engineered differently, which I do suspect contributed not only to stability but also to its overall tone.
Looks alot like the guild starfire...sounds great shane...are they filertron or dearmond pichips?..either way you prove your tone an sound is in ur ears an fingers...i have a 58 barnie kessel hagstrom with single cool toaster pickups same harp style string trapeze similar to this but pointy horns an with supa fat neck like Louisville slugger sawn in half an huge valute in neck at heel of yhe neck...u referenced it as a dud the one u didnt like an other people have told me that they model yhe body around.the later 60's stuff now the older model i have has feed back problems sometimes an its uncontrollable...an because of the neck being bigger in that shows neck stress because of bolting pattern that all changed after 1963
Nice job Shane! It sounds a lot like my Epi Sharaton II. I think the Viking Series has a 14 or 15" Radius where the Epi has a 12". Being that my fingers are thin and short (I'm 5'4") the Epi has a little better Neck feel to me than the Hagstrom but the guitar sounds Great. And sounds good through your DSL-40CR. Thanks man!!
this is off the subject sort of but Shane have you read the fender warranty for Australia???? lucky pup you should. all we old americans get is a 30 day manufactures defrct warranty.
Great you reviewed it! Does it have pull up knobs for split pickups? Some retailer claims it, but they have been wrong before and you didn't mention it. Cheers
I had a few people mention that. I went back to the shop today and it does. They had another Hagstrom Viking that didn't have push pull so I didn't think to check it out when I had it. :-)
I used to own one of these for a while. I find it has a kind of gnarly sound to it when distorted -- in a good way -- kind of like how SGs sound a bit gnarly compared to Les Pauls.
Funny thing is they're probably made better than they were when they first came out. When they first came out they were kind of cheesy. But they did get better. I guess there as good as anything else coming out of Asia. When the Vikings first came out they were bolt on necks.
haha I have been using them on and off for at least 18 months! I thought I would get a little artistic and block out the junk in the shot with some cool lens flares. hehe
The Super Viking has independently coil-tapped pickups, so it really increases the kinds of sounds you can make with it. Played both of them, bought the Super because I really liked the diversity of tones I could get out of the thing.
Yes the hagstrom guitar is *ASSEMBLED* in China. But people don’t know that all of the parts are *FROM SWEDEN*. Then are later shipped to China for assembly. So it’s not a guitar from China.
Honestly...I've tried a few Hagstroms in the past. Pretty guitars but not overly impressed. This sounds pretty good man. Its got me looking twice. BTW...I think your Bandits are getting a little jealous over your newest amp. LOL
Hagstrom 🎸 super Viking 🎸 yep that's what I'm talking about sounds warm nice and great looking affordable price at that . Thanks TroyFrost / Troyster 😎 CoolRiffs 😎 Cool 🤘 🤘🤘👍🎸
I always found it crazy how China can build these 335 guitars as cheap as they do. Gibson Rickenbacker Gretsch all their semi-hollow bodies are 3 or $4,000 dollars how does China do it. I have a hunch.lol Gibson makes a 335 for $4,000 China can make one for $300 seriously lol can't figure that out.
Well, damn. Now i need to compare this (the Bigsby version) with a Gretsch G5422T.... And then decide between one of those two versus a Jazzmaster.... Nice, demo, Shane.
Looks like a great guitar, I like everything about it with the exception of the stupid name hahaha. Seriously though I don't think Super Viking fits this guitar at all.
This is a step up from the Viking Deluxe, which is a step up from the standard Viking. IIRC, the "Super" part defines its scale length (25.5" rather than the usual 24.75"), but it has upgraded pickups and coil tapping as well.
Hagstrom sounds great and a looker. Naming it Super Viking a bit cheesy, not a comic superhero. Re-brand the name to grab attention of serious guitar players
It would appear my typos are on Fire this week. I am blaming my new plugin! 😆 that aside, the guitar is pretty wild. Lemme know what you think. 😄🎸
Look really well made damn
That inlay and fret job looks perfect ^^
intheblues Damn, that's a tasty sounding (and looking) guitar! Definitely something odd going on with whatever plugin/nle you've used to do the lower thirds... Hope you work it out and fix it soon (hopefully before the next vid!) 😀. But even with the crazy lower thirds, that guitar is amazing!
Hagstrom Viking player here! I love it - no desire to change the pickups and plays beautifully, makes me very intrigued to try out the Swede series too
pro trick : watch movies at flixzone. I've been using them for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Maxton Asher Definitely, been using Flixzone for months myself :)
That opening demo ... might just be the best tone you’ve had on the channel to date.
Purchased one and installed a bigsby. Very happy with it!!!
IS the bigsby working well? Is the guitar in tune correctly with It? Thanks un advance
I'm surprised you didn't cover the coil splitting (both pickups are coil-split, tone pots are push-pull). Mixing single-coil and humbucker modes in the middle position could produce some nice tones.
Dan George I just posted that question. So it is for sure the split pickups? Awesome
Great demo! Could you comment on how this guitar compares to the standard Viking you demoed a few months earlier?
Hagström is such a value brand, I've played the Super Viking and love it. I own a Super Swede which is my daily driver. Does aaaanything I ask it to :)
Thanks for the video Shane. It really helped. Bought one. Love it. A few bits needed tightening up when I bought it, but that was it. Awesome guitar for the price. Love the split tone switches.
0:18 the N E C C pickup
HoshiHearts RetroGaming geez I am on fire with the typo!! 😆
I wasn't gonna say nuthin'.....
haha. I proof my videos but I tend to watch them more than read them. I will get on it coming up moving forward haha.
if you pull up on the volume knobs you can also split the humbuckers .......... you kinda missed that great feature

What/who is that number for the opener? It sure is nice! Tasty playing by Shane, too.
It's a really cool take on .38 Special...Listen to "Hold On Losely." They really took Southern Rock mainstream.
I tried this in a shop, and thought generally it was a great gig worthy instrument. Nice feel, great pickups and the 25.5 inch scale makes very familiar for fender scale players.
She's a stunner Shane! Ripper sounds!
Would have thought a "Super" would have a Bigsby style tail piece. It should give some vibrato just by pushing on it though as it looks like it is hinged. Do they import to NZ?

WOW that sounds stunning in the opening shane !! and she's a beauty !! :)
Gorgeous looking and sounding guitar, thanks for the great review.
Looks alot like the guild starfire...sounds great shane...are they filertron or dearmond pichips?..either way you prove your tone an sound is in ur ears an fingers...i have a 58 barnie kessel hagstrom with single cool toaster pickups same harp style string trapeze similar to this but pointy horns an with supa fat neck like Louisville slugger sawn in half an huge valute in neck at heel of yhe neck...u referenced it as a dud the one u didnt like an other people have told me that they model yhe body around.the later 60's stuff now the older model i have has feed back problems sometimes an its uncontrollable...an because of the neck being bigger in that shows neck stress because of bolting pattern that all changed after 1963
Loved my old Hagstrom SG & Strauss 30W rig. I miss that guitar
Did you notice any neck dive, or the body falling forward when on the strap?
I have an Epiphone Dot, but this one looks really superior. Might try to get one soon, but they are impossible to find here in Brazil
Their baritone is AWESOME!!!
Hey Shane, would love to know your take on the Wampler attack on gear reviewers [specially Phil McKnight]
true
Yes!!! Love my hagstrom
Thanks man. I got your email by the way, thanks! :-)
this is off the subject sort of but Shane have you read the fender warranty for Australia???? lucky pup you should. all we old americans get is a 30 day manufactures defrct warranty.
No push pull single coil sounds?
Are the pups more like filtertrons?
Great you reviewed it! Does it have pull up knobs for split pickups? Some retailer claims it, but they have been wrong before and you didn't mention it. Cheers
I had a few people mention that. I went back to the shop today and it does. They had another Hagstrom Viking that didn't have push pull so I didn't think to check it out when I had it. :-)
intheblues got it. Thx for replying. The power of priming. Yeah. You got anchored! 😄
intheblues you can bring it back for a "Hagstrom Super Viking -single coil take- review"!
A very good Review , thanks .
I used to own one of these for a while. I find it has a kind of gnarly sound to it when distorted -- in a good way -- kind of like how SGs sound a bit gnarly compared to Les Pauls.
Does anyone know how the Chinese factories compare to the Korean that make PRS SE, ESP LTD, Chapman, etc?
Funny thing is they're probably made better than they were when they first came out. When they first came out they were kind of cheesy. But they did get better. I guess there as good as anything else coming out of Asia. When the Vikings first came out they were bolt on necks.
But the ORIGINAL Hagstroms were made in SWEDEN!
Duh Sherlock
There's no comparison between these pickups, which are so so, and the original Custom 58 humbuckers from the seventies.
I was talking about the sixties but you're right the pickups were better I'm sure.
Doh! You missed showing us the coil tap sounds...
i see you've got a little orange back there - any plans for a demo soon? great video as usual btw
Awesome demo. Great sounding beautiful guitar.
Thanks man!
intheblues ur welcome.
That lens flare. What are you, J.J. Abrams now? ;) Great review!
haha I have been using them on and off for at least 18 months! I thought I would get a little artistic and block out the junk in the shot with some cool lens flares. hehe
In case you didn't note, Shane: those caption thingies in the intro didn't stay up long enough to read. At 0:11 for example :)
Damnit Spock Ahm a doctah not a physicist!
Nice guitar, the Marshall sounds well good 👍👍👍👍
How does this one compare to the regular Hagstrom Viking?
Longer scale length (25.5"). Take a look on the Hagstrom website for specifics.
Shane which do you prefer? The Hagstrom SV or the Tokai ES?
Build quality there’s not much in it. Tone wise they are both nice but this guitar sounds killer. These pickups are awesome I was really impressed.
Which guitar Is Better? Super viking or viking? And why??
The Super Viking has independently coil-tapped pickups, so it really increases the kinds of sounds you can make with it. Played both of them, bought the Super because I really liked the diversity of tones I could get out of the thing.
THAT is a beautiful guitar. The neck pick up sounds super smoothe.
looks super!...got a little something of few brands in the same price bracket - but WoW sounds great
I have a super swede and it feels great. It was in that higher price range
You need to do more hagstrom!
I'm looking for a Semi and it's on my shortlist.
The viking is an all round guitar. Jazz, Blues, Rock, Rockabilly it can play all styles
Yes the hagstrom guitar is *ASSEMBLED* in China. But people don’t know that all of the parts are *FROM SWEDEN*. Then are later shipped to China for assembly. So it’s not a guitar from China.
That Hagstrom looks and sounds great.
I love my Viking...
It does it all.❤
Do a shootout with your Tokai.
Amen!!!
Beautiful. The intro was excellent.
Patreon account? Whats that for.
Honestly...I've tried a few Hagstroms in the past. Pretty guitars but not overly impressed. This sounds pretty good man. Its got me looking twice. BTW...I think your Bandits are getting a little jealous over your newest amp. LOL
Oh my! 10 seconds in, and wam, bam. Bing, bang, bosh. Toooooooooooone for days baby!
What did you think of the resin fretboard?
It's so good I didn't even notice it was resin! Great information thanks Kurt :-)
"Resinator" I should say. It is a wood composite designed to feel and sound like ebony.
Nice guitar :D great intro
Beautiful guitar and what a killer sound!!!
Hagstrom 🎸 super Viking 🎸 yep that's what I'm talking about sounds warm nice and great looking affordable price at that . Thanks TroyFrost / Troyster 😎 CoolRiffs 😎 Cool 🤘 🤘🤘👍🎸
bonjour j ai possédé une viking il y a quelques années j adore cette guitare
Sounds great but I would worry about its resale value too much to buy one new.
I've always wondered that. will Chinese guitars ever be vintage LOL
These guitars are'nt expensive.....
£750/£800 new so not cheap and cant sell used on ebay for £200, I rest my case.
I think the weird light on your leg is probably the sun ☀️ 😂🤟
Very nice indeed!🙂👍
Sounds great...looks great.
Well, damn. Now i need to compare this (the Bigsby version) with a Gretsch G5422T.... And then decide between one of those two versus a Jazzmaster.... Nice, demo, Shane.
The G.A.S. oh the G.A.S...!!!
The one I have has coil splitting from the factory.
It is good. Actually excellent. Just doesn't sound like a semi hollow.
Looks like if you’re only using the Marshall now we can kiss the pristine cleans away.........
Sounds super. Looks purty too!
That a King of the Hill or Family Guy poster ??
King of the Hill
Ah tell ya hwat!
Propane.
A-huh! Hyeah!
How good is this guitar?
Saw a couple of their lp style,, thot they were pretty nice, played n sounded gd and looked gd.
How does it compare to the Viking?
No coil splitting (push pull on tones) no explanation of the difference between the standard Viking. Try researching the axe!
Sadly, sometimes I have guitars on loan for an hour or two.
2:02 = Bummer.....especially for a "Swedish" brand
What do you mean? Should "Swedish" brands have a fat neck?
OMG that sounds amazing 🤭
I just bought a Hagstrom Super Viking in Deep Baltic Blue... That's your fault that is shane! :)
Oh what 😀😀😀hagsröms
What exactly is the difference between this one and the "non super" ONE? 😂
The super has a longer scale length (25.5") and has extra features such as the flame, fancier inlays, chrome hardware and coil taps
She sure is purty....
I'm actually pretty sure after watching this I'm going to order one from Sky Music...
I found one new on eBay $1100 AUD including shipping She’s a beaut. Now if i could just play like Shane’s intro..........that’s what sold it to me.
Looks like the combination of a gretsch and a 335.
Looks like a great guitar, I like everything about it with the exception of the stupid name hahaha. Seriously though I don't think Super Viking fits this guitar at all.
yeah now that you say it, it's insane they went with it ahah
PS: OK it's a swedish compagny !! They win back 50 points xD
Well it IS a Swedish brand!
This is a step up from the Viking Deluxe, which is a step up from the standard Viking. IIRC, the "Super" part defines its scale length (25.5" rather than the usual 24.75"), but it has upgraded pickups and coil tapping as well.
Splitting.
Thanks Dan it definitely sound and look like a step up,
Priced at 739E on thomann
Either the guitar is .. too big ..or ..you’re ...too small ..😎🎸
very gretsch-like in appointments; i dig it
Stunningly beautiful cheap Chinese product.
Its swedish and back in the day they were kinda high-end guitars
i used to have one great guitar now you gave me GAS
Hagstrom sounds great and a looker. Naming it Super Viking a bit cheesy, not a comic superhero. Re-brand the name to grab attention of serious guitar players
Originally SWEDISH! So NO cheese intended!
Made in China but a “Swede guitar company”
