Played the more budget Ultra Swede a few years ago and was super impressed by how good it sounded. The 'both pickups' position was super Jimmy Page live tone, more so than most Les Paul's I've played.
Lovely review. Hagstrom is one of those brands that everyone has forgotten about. I have an older Super Swede with a quilted top, beautiful guitar, and plays great. Glad to see Hagstrom getting some love.
I've hold one of these beauties in my hand at the weekend and felt in love with it. Hagstrom would be currently the only one which I would take in consideration to buy instead of my most wanted Duesenberg.
Love that finish, at least the way it looks on here! A lot of the photos of the xtra special old pale, don't look as dark as it does here. How true to life is your colour grading of this film, did you bring the shadows down a fair bit? Great review, I've really started to look a bit closer at Hagstrom guitars. And yes for the review of the other hagstroms please
When I was about 15 in the late 70s, I saw a Hagstrom Viking hanging in a street-front music store window in my home town, and that was the first guitar that I lusted after. I was new to guitar, so I didn’t know about ES-335s or semi-hollow guitars or anything yet. But I just remember seeing this rich cherry-red electric guitar, with a “huge” body like a jazz guitar, except it was thin like a rock guitar… So, if the Viking is one of the other guitars Hagstrom sent you, then yes - do it up, for sure. 👍🏻
The DLX12 12 string version is not bad either. I bought it as a cheap alternative for the 12 string Rickenbacker, but as for quality , it ain't cheap at all: it has the same Byrds jangle as the Rick, way more playable neck (broader than the Rick) ,way better and easier tunable (all tuners on the same two sides of the headstock), and it stays so much better in tune that I fear Rickenbacker has to take some lessons from that.
That is a truly Gorgeous Guitar®. I would not have considered a Hagstrom before your review, but with my guitar collection seriously missing a Les Paul style, this looks like the best solution! Your review is great, but it’s your playing that continues to inspire and impress. Every note… perfection.
Hey Sped. A bit off-topic but I’ve noticed you’ve been getting a film-type look on your videos lately. Really nice to look at! I thought I’d ask if you’re into diffusion filters or some type of post processing. Great job at any rate!
Prettier than a red Schecter Telecaster at a Christies auction. I liked the carve on the heel to body joint, double anti-headstocksnap strap locks, tuners look nice, appreciate they've had that style for years but reminiscent of the D'Angelico jazz guitar style (1950s D'Angelico New Yorker). If it you like it, which you seem to, then I'll stick it on my list for my next guitar.
I've watched this review so many times because the colours of that super swede look amazing! It's such a shame it doesn't look like that in real life. Hagstrom make the super swede X-tra special old pale darker like it looks on here! Great review, thanks. Have you played the guitar since the review?

Sounds much more like this one, now. One thing I learned, cos of composite fretboard use machine oil not lemon oil, etc. Love it. Great demo and sounds.
I've got an older generation Swede (not the Super Swede) that I picked up for a pittance due to a factory blemish. It's surprisingly versatile, and I love the feel, but I have to admit that it's rather heavy. Thanks for the video Sped, more people need to pay attention to Hagstrom.
Mad what you can get your hands on with the odd blemish. They are versatile and seem to be working hard with innovation and design ideas. My Les Paul is heavier than this by far so I'm enjoying myself. Haha!
The interesting thing about the blemish is that on a Gibson that has a certain amount of "collectable" value, that's the end of it, but for a brand like Hagstrom it makes no difference. @@SpedSpedding

Cool guitar, is that the one you used in the I believe in a thing called love video? Great video by the way. I would love to try a Super Swede but they are difficult to find in the States.
I would never recommend one over the other, as it depends on your personal preference. Are you referring to the SE 594? I haven't played one myself, but I've heard it's fantastic. If possible, try playing both and make your choice; whichever you choose will be the right one for you.
Nice one! Glad you liked it. This is actually my teaching preset on the Fractal FM9, new pedal for the band. I absolutely love it. Gonna make a video on it soon.
You are a hoot. Love the review the playing and the chat. I rarely respond to reviews but I am actually going to try one out. I would have liked to have heard more of your impressions of the pickups. The only negative is the stainless frets. They last too long are too shiney and attract alien vibrations from the galaxy xzffxx.
Great stuff Chris. I'm buzzing after that review. I've had a hankering for a Hagstrom from way back. They claimed to have the slimmest necks also. Is that true...... 😊
I was chatting to the guys about the 67 Viking, the one that Elvis played. Apparently the neck on that is incredibly slim. If I remember correctly, the radius on this is 14.4” and the neck is super comfortable. Little bit bigger than my 98 standard Les Paul, but definitely not as thin as my Strat or my PRS.
Well that looks and sounds amazing , definitely one for consideration, and it seems a lot of guitar for the money ?. You might have just caused a price increase and created a waiting list. Great to watch 👏👏
You missed the special bridge Hagström have... 😉 Nice clip though! I have an older Hagström Super Swede Tremar, they really made some changes from that one!
Hey man, Like you... I also own an actual Gibbie LP Anvil lol. Mine is about 9 lbs. which isn't too bad but still... it's the axe I grab the least here pretty much, sadly. Sure, it looks spectacular hanging there on my wall though! 🤣 In hindsight, I really should've dug a little deeper into my wallet an bought their 'LP Access' with the comfort carves etc... Anyhow, in US money I'm guessing that price would be somewhere around 14-1500'ish which is about half the price of an LP Standard. Not bad at all and if you're never going to sell it there's no reason to worry about resale value either. Definitely worth looking at because it does sound beautiful. Great playing as always Sped! 🤟
Yeah exactly, I have never bought a guitar or piece of gear and thought about the resell value. I've only ever made purchases based on working with them and how well they will serve me. If I've made the right purchase and they become a workhorse I wouldn't want to sell it anyway and if I did it would be worth more to me than the book price haha.
Thanks for the Peter Green sound. Beautiful guitar, I believe in the existence of life beyond the Gibson universe. I have a Fujigen Neo Classic, it's specialty is called the Circle Fretting System, I recommend trying it out if you have the chance.
Just had a look at them online. Really nice. I’m not familiar with the CFS, thanks for sharing that. I’d definitely want to have a go of one. What’s the main thing you notice from the slight curve?
Well, I have an NC30, the main selling point was the colour of the vintage violin and the name (!) of the Seymour Duncan Whole Lotta Humbucker, not the C.F.S. What I feel is that it feels good to scale on it, despite the thick neck, yet somehow my fingers can reach it. Of course, how could a vintage violin-coloured guitar not be gigasuper.
*******!.. That’s gorgeous… I’ve recently been considering picking up a vintage Gibson L6-S but I could pick the Hagstrom up for less… looks very high quality and like the composite material approach… hmm think I’ll check them out😀
Haha! Good to hear from you Mike! Yeah, it really is gorgeous! They’ve done such a good job with this Guitar and having played the older Super Swede a few years back they’ve really come along way. I strung it with 10s, but I reckon I’ll put hybrids on it just because it’s a slight bit longer than my Les Paul.
Nice looking and playing guitar. Looks like a good LP alternative. I saw Jorma play a Hagstrom in the 70’s in a small club and that combo wailed. I would love to see the other two they sent you. BTW, if you’re sick of the LP I can message you my address lol.
None of their U.S. vendors have these, new anyway. Half of the vendors listed on the website don't show Hagstrom. There are some on Amazon, but not the "Super Swede". They've got a beautiful 12 string, nope none here either. Not your fault Sped, Thanks for the look. Maybe someday.
I must admit my experience with hagstrom is coloured slightly by the fact I first played one back in the 70s, it had bigger frets than my bass ,so with me monkey boy death grip ,obviously it wouldn't sound in tune The guitarist i was with at the time absolutely loved it. If I remember correctly, it was more expensive than a les paul, but built infinitely better
I reckon they’ve come on quite a bit since the 70s! 😂 I think I understand what you’re saying, though… because they were much bigger, you were putting more pressure on and pulling the notes sharp?
@SpedSpedding yup! I certainly didn't have a light touch Looking back, it seems the big frets paved the way for scalloped fretboards and such Nice demo, by the way
I actually had an issue with my old one tbf as well. This one is aesthetically pleasing but I don’t know beyond that. Assuming it’s better though as they’ve clearly been innovating and upping their game across the instrument. I’ll have to open the back and have a look. Felt decent though, definitely not flimsy.
Hey man, I just want to buy this for the name itself. I like your humor. Beautiful guitar. But I think they should have had some more finnishes to choose from. Personally im a sucker for yellow, purple or green.
Always liked Hagstrom. Sounds great. Id spend that on this before an Epiphone. Im sorry to even compare it to the E company. Hagdstrom is so much better! Ok! Ok! Ill take it!
the only question i have is ,, is it good enough that u would sell your real Gibson LP and only have this LP style guitar to play ,, and yes i dig the improvements in the neck and body contours that the Hagstrom provides but putting that aside ,, im talking more just tone and playability
I think a fair comparison would be a Gibson Les Paul Studio 2024 in for review and for me to compare. However, this wasn’t really supposed to be too much of a Hagstrom v Gibson. I was just using my Les Paul as a comparison here and there because it’s that style of Guitar. And for the comedy. 😂
I use hybrids on my LP and I restrung this with 10s as I thought that’s what it came with and didn’t want it moving on me. It felt tighter like I had to work for the bends a little more. I reckon with the hybrids on it just get a little more forgiveness in striking the strings harder. Nice to have the option as the regular Swede’s are 24.75”
😂😂😂 The yellow I used on the thumbnail font is from the Swedish flag. I imagine the IKEA yellow isn’t far off that either. If they ever get around to selling Super Swede’s I’d be game. Imagine the instructions that’d come with that though… 🫠
Beautiful guitar, unfortunate brand name. Hard to love a guitar who's name makes me think of a hag strumming. Would have been better off to call it Hamstrung. I know it's a pretty silly reason for not liking a guitar and no doubt somebody will give me crap for it, but is what it is. Love your shows Sped.
I adore my Les Paul; not throwing shade. I'm loyal to myself and speak my mind. The headstock strength is pretty common knowledge so I thought it best to point that out. And the comfort because of the cutaways; if someone could do that to my LP and guarantee it's safety I'd do it.
Both of my home made Telecasters have stainless steel frets and they do not go through strings any more than normal frets. Witter on a bit more please Sped.
Bargain basement price, including the triple G case to boot, yikes! Triple G presentation as well, I like the stainless frets & double strap holders, what's not to like.
It’s a lot of guitar for the money. All I did when I got it was restring. Not adjusted it or anything. I like to see how they come from the factory or whatever. Thanks for watching.
I don't need another guitar.... I don't need another guitar.... I don't need another guitar.... I don't need another guitar.... Maybe I do need a single cut🥵

Why thank you! Spoiler alert as I’m yet to talk about it on here. This is all through my Fractal FM9. 😍
Cool guitar, is that the one you used in the I believe in a thing called love video? Great video by the way. I would love to try a Super Swede but they are difficult to find in the States.
That’s the old one I’m referencing in the video, as in “I’ve played one before.” But this one was sent out to me recently, it’s their brand-new model.
I spotted these while looking for a new guitar. Can't choose between these and the PRS SE custom quilt. Any thoughts?
I would never recommend one over the other, as it depends on your personal preference. Are you referring to the SE 594? I haven't played one myself, but I've heard it's fantastic. If possible, try playing both and make your choice; whichever you choose will be the right one for you.
You do make me laugh Sped😂 great review, great guitar, keep em coming please, (what loop pedal were you using by the way)?
Haha I love that! Thanks so much for watching leaving a comment. Don’t be a stranger and let me know what you think when you try one.
By the way, my name isn’t Chris? 😂
@@SpedSpedding Bro just guessed your name i guess haha!!
@@SpedSpeddingbut it shows in the website that it is 19 at the 1st fret and 20.5 at the 12th fret. Which is like wizard 3 territory.
Well that looks and sounds amazing , definitely one for consideration, and it seems a lot of guitar for the money ?. You might have just caused a price increase and created a waiting list. Great to watch 👏👏
Thanks Lee! Yeah you get a lot of bang for your buck. People seem to like it in the comments section too!
You missed the special bridge Hagström have... 😉
Nice clip though!
I have an older Hagström Super Swede Tremar, they really made some changes from that one!
I had one of the 1970 Swede,s I thought is one of the best guitars I’d ever played. It
Please, make a video about your guitar PRS.
Noted!
I had one years back. Sounds great looks great but it was really heavy and the finish on the neck stuck to my sweaty palms
Is the body chambered?
Isn't this one is the limited Tiger Burst version?
You can get it in a few colours. This is the X-Tra Special Old Pale.
I initially thought the same but I think it just looks a bit like the tiger burst on here due to Sped's darker colour grading
Nice guitar, I've never tried a Hagstrom.
Next time you see one give it a whirl. 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding I'm not allowed into any guitar shops currently as I just bought a prs ce24 😆
@@alanmcgowan8767you are allowed as I’ve just said. Pass on my regards.
Nice looking and playing guitar. Looks like a good LP alternative. I saw Jorma play a Hagstrom in the 70’s in a small club and that combo wailed. I would love to see the other two they sent you. BTW, if you’re sick of the LP I can message you my address lol.
You got more?, sure lets check them out!
I do indeed. They're in the corner dying to get out of their cases!
better than fantome in sound?
Never tried one so couldn't comment!
I must admit my experience with hagstrom is coloured slightly by the fact I first played one back in the 70s, it had bigger frets than my bass ,so with me monkey boy death grip ,obviously it wouldn't sound in tune
The guitarist i was with at the time absolutely loved it. If I remember correctly, it was more expensive than a les paul, but built infinitely better
I reckon they’ve come on quite a bit since the 70s! 😂
I think I understand what you’re saying, though… because they were much bigger, you were putting more pressure on and pulling the notes sharp?
@SpedSpedding yup! I certainly didn't have a light touch
Looking back, it seems the big frets paved the way for scalloped fretboards and such
Nice demo, by the way
@@glennlilley8608thank you! Glad you liked it.
Great guitar, though notorious for a weak/wonky selector switch.
Mr sped why haven’t you done All of my Love -Led Zeppelin
Nowhere fast tutorial by smiths please
Choooon.
Always liked Hagstrom. Sounds great. Id spend that on this before an Epiphone. Im sorry to even compare it to the E company. Hagdstrom is so much better! Ok! Ok! Ill take it!
😂😂 I love the fact that you convinced yourself within one comment to make a purchase!
the only question i have is ,, is it good enough that u would sell your real Gibson LP and only have this LP style guitar to play ,, and yes i dig the improvements in the neck and body contours that the Hagstrom provides but putting that aside ,, im talking more just tone and playability
are you playing some good ole Blackberry Smoke??
I’m intrigued by the California scale length on a Nashville type of guitar. Great review!
I use hybrids on my LP and I restrung this with 10s as I thought that’s what it came with and didn’t want it moving on me. It felt tighter like I had to work for the bends a little more. I reckon with the hybrids on it just get a little more forgiveness in striking the strings harder. Nice to have the option as the regular Swede’s are 24.75”
got two of them a viking and select super swede,,, hardly play them for some reason, i will dust them off now lol
If you’ve got a collection of dusty guitars, what I want to know is, just how many have you got? 😳🤣
lol too many for a shit guitarist thats for sure@@SpedSpedding
anastasia pliz slash
Look for one of my videos called: Is this Slash’s hardest riff?
That's a nice guitar but those pickup brackets are massive!
I didn’t really notice much of a difference. 🤷🏻♂️
...anybody else first off thought Mr Sped had been to IK-EE-A and bought a new sofa?
...IK-EE-A don't do stuff that shiny... Loverly thing!
😂😂😂 The yellow I used on the thumbnail font is from the Swedish flag. I imagine the IKEA yellow isn’t far off that either.
If they ever get around to selling Super Swede’s I’d be game. Imagine the instructions that’d come with that though… 🫠
@@SpedSpedding ...and then having to go back because there was only 5 locking tuners in the box. 🙄

Super Swede? That would be Agnetha or Anni Frid, coreect?
I’ve got the Sarah Bäckman model in the post.

Nice Sped but where do you find one My go to on line place Sweet Water is not a hag dealer

What a beaut! I want one dammit! You’re a bad influence Sped…And that’s why I like you

@@SpedSpedding 😂😂 yeah it’s my Villain arc. ‘I’ll get you from this Sped Spedding!!! You haven’t seen the last of me!’
😂 Get yourself a Bogner amp and your sorted. 🚽
For all the negative commentary thrown towards the LP we all know which one will be your steady. That being said, shes perty.
I adore my Les Paul; not throwing shade. I'm loyal to myself and speak my mind. The headstock strength is pretty common knowledge so I thought it best to point that out. And the comfort because of the cutaways; if someone could do that to my LP and guarantee it's safety I'd do it.
@@SpedSpeddingtry a Collings city limit if you can.
Both of my home made Telecasters have stainless steel frets and they do not go through strings any more than normal frets. Witter on a bit more please Sped.
This is the type of comment I respect. The truth. 😂
Quadruple G by my count .
😂 you’re not wrong.
Those Hagstroms, once you try one, you can’t let them go…lol
They’re like Pringles. 🫃🏻
