18 year old Fernando gives me an awesome shoe shine. He said he has been working as a shoe shiner for 5 years, since 13 years old. The setting of this video is on the street in beautiful downtown Mexico City. He used washed my black leather shoes, used black shoe polish, and even a flame to make them perfect.

Use to do this over 60 years ago. Used denatured alcohol to melt the shoe wax into the pores of the leather. Video brings back memories . Continued the art into the Marines when we had real leather shoes to spit shine. The same with the bill or our covers.
I hope as he matures he learns that accepting help/extra tip from strangers isnt a sign of greed or weakness lifes short and you gotta get what you can while you can
It’s not a sign of greed or weakness. Mexico has tons of gangs that if someone found out that he got a lot more money than what he is suppose to get, they would take his money.

To have developed a skill to this point at just 18 years old is really impressive and good. It's a shame a lot of these guys dont get past doing it in a street instead of being well paid in an establishment.

I’m sure he makes plenty on the streets instead of having to rent a space in an establishment. And if business drops he can up and leave to a better location. He looks like he is doing well for himself. Those chairs alone aren’t cheap and they look pretty nice

He does a great job! When I had to shine my boots I would set the solid wax on fire a second to liquify it, but I've never tried that on my shoes.

I don’t think it was actually his choice to not accept the tip. The tattooed woman who was “hanging around” his stall towards the end of the video seemed a little too involved with his denial of the tip as she was the first one to say that he was giving him “too much money.” It was actually a very awkward and tense moment. I actually think that Jason is now compromised in that specific area as they now seem aware of his monetary generosity, but that’s just my ptsd induced hyper vigilance talking.

That lady has some involvement in the yucky vibe. Honestly driving away his potential customers with her loud advertisement. I know I wouldn't want to get my shoes shined next to her.
The lady quite nicely said..." not everyone denies a tip...quite cool..." complimenting the kid's choice. But maybe it had.something to do with both of them working under someone else and him not wanting her to tell their boss he is taking extras money. In my experience street jobs are always under some kind of dirty side... and its obvious the kid does not own that stall
@@Fede-xw9zz Yes, she did say, ‘not everyone denies a tip, etc.,’ but she was also way too concerned with Jason attempting to give Fernando “too much money.” Either way, they’re on to Jason for carrying around a bit of cash and giving generous tips. Let the wrong person figure that out, and nothing good can come from this.

I’m from Mexico. I miss walking in that street (Madero Street) and hearing the organilleros, walking from store to store and living a normal life. Also, the woman is trying to catch people to get them tattoos and get a commission out of it. She said “Not everyone gets a tip from Shoe Shining, Fernando is the best”
