Most of the negative comments are politically influenced. These are mostly majority malay states vs west coast mix of all races. You could see the infra development gap over there vs west coast malaysia. These are oil producing states but they being denied their royalty payment, sadly this unfair policy still continued by our current prime Minister.

the first time I went to Terengganu & Kelantan I was a baby so I don't remember much from those trips. but I went to Terengganu again as an adult and fell in love. And my sister married to a guy from Pahang so we frequent it often for the past 10 years. As a city girl from KL, the old school, chill and easy-going vibes in all three states are nothing like KL. it feels so nostalgic there. like you said, most people would suggest penang etc but for me personally I would avoid Penang. they say Penang is the food capital of Malaysia. I find that that's not true at all. there are so many wonderful hidden gems (in terms of food, adventure and travel) in the east coast compared to the tiny Penang island.

I completely disagree with people who say east coast has nothing that visitors can do or there is nothing good to eat. In fact, Kelantan itself for me is underrated food paradise in Malaysia, the culture is well preserved, Terengganu is very well known with their beautiful islands in Peninsular Malaysia if not in Malaysia compared to Sabah, Pahang very well known with their nature attractions such as National Park. Just that, these east coast states are not really exposed to the tourists who visit Malaysia.

Very interesting comments from you guys about the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia. I'm Malay-Muslims from west coast and I do think that east coast Malays are "more Islamic" in the sense that they adhere more to the strict interpretation of Islam with regards to dress code, rituals obligation and some prohibition on things that the laws in these east coast states deem as "unIslamic".
But Islam as practices there is also mix with local Malay culture which encourage women participation in businesses and entrepreneurial endeavours.
I believe you have visited Pasar Payang in Terengganu and Pasar Siti Khadijah in Kelantan where more than 80% of business stalls there are helmed by women.
The Malay-Muslims women in these east coast states might look "conservative" in the western people's eyes due to their Islamic dress code but let me tell you that they are the most active in business and have the most entrepreneurial spirits!

Case in point, the islands of Redang, Kapas and Perhentian are all part of Terengganu state, but tourists from all over the world wear anything they wish and the locals do not impose upon them. And yes, Kelantanese are probably the friendliest people in Malaysia. So chill, Malaysians are ok ✌️

      @stephaniejaboh8929 Год назад +2

Perhaps let me rephrase some of your statements. Kelantan food are among the best Malay food in Malaysia. I wouldn't say what's being said about Kelantan is particularly racist because many of the people who don't agree to the rules of Kelantan are also Malays/Muslims from other states. I also think we can all agree that we don't really view foreigners as one of us, they are guests so we don't usually place our rules on them but we can be very mean to one of our own if they don't follow the rules. I think this is why it's the way it is. It's the same when you hear people of other states saying there's nothing to see in Sarawak and Sabah except for bad roads and they only have beaches and jungles and underdeveloped but when tourists come, they usually say they enjoy Sabah and Sarawak more because the people are much friendlier and warm than the peninsular. I also think it's because they usually go to KL where most people always seem more in a rush and business like than other states so when they actually go to Kelantan or terengganu or Sarawak or Sabah, they are genuinely surprised because it's unexpected.

comments like that are made by those who have never been there or made by those who like to politicize because they don't want tourists to come there or investors to invest in the east coast of Malaysia, that's why many people from the east coast come to the west coast to work in Kuala Lumpur or other states on the west coast of malaysia, this is because the east coast is dominated by a party with an islamic focus, so those who are more liberal or moderate thinkers are not so inclined to encourage foreign tourists to come to the east coast of malaysia, but they know that in Malaysia's east coast has more beautiful beaches, interesting islands and the sea is clearer than Malaysia's west coast

Pahang, you kidding me, hutan negara is there, and it's just next to KL/Selangor, heard of Cameron Highland?

yea don't worry, th east coast is amazing.
i think u cld look at it like deepest Wales or Scotland which urbanites in London don't know much about.
you just hv to accept th difference n it'll be ok. ppl are just ppl. they just want to live their lives in peace just like anyone else do.

I always recommended foreigner to explore East Coast, you both have experience it and I need not have to elaborate further. Its always a different experience and environment there right? I think for foreigner specially woman, appropriate dress like giulia is good enough! I'm happy you both braving yourself and went to explore east coast, which I'll be watching later. There are few `Mat Salleh' channel that had experience East coast and love it there, You know them right? 😉 -- Food and footprints, Jetlag warrior, Travel Gramers, Ken Abroad & Moonshine and lemongrass. Looks like you both are in Sarawak, happy exploring sarawak and sabah.

Who said that? Probably some racist non Malay n non Muslim. I've been recommending u guys visit east coast since the first time u visit Malaysia 2,3 years ago. If you want to really explore the culture of Malaysia its not complete without visiting the east coast n Borneo(Sabah n Sarawak). *nampaknya komen aku telah buat beberapa org konon2 mangsa sentap sedangkan aku tulis " beberapa" org bukan Melayu yg rasis tulis komen2 buruk n negatif terhadap Islam di negeri2 pantai timur. Takkan kita org melayu Islam nak mengutuk n hina orang n agama kita sendiri? Inilah masalahnya ada seetengah org bukan melayu yg sentiasa play victim sedangkan jelas memang ada dalam kalangan mereka yg anti Melayu n Islam. Semua bangsa ada golongan rasis inilah hakikatnya..

That would make you one of those who are classified as racists. The fact that a racist (including you) denies his/her racism is not unusual. As a non-racist myself, I would rephrase this word of yours '[p]robably some racist non malay n non muslim' into a simple "probably some racists" without emphasising the word 'non-Malay' and 'non-Muslim' because this is exactly what is making one a racist.

The fact that I am ethnically Malay, Muslim, and Malaysian myself, causes me to be offended on behalf of all other Malaysians regardless of their racial background. It aggravates me because it would lead to negative emotional reactions toward certain ethnic groups, acceptance of negative stereotypes, and racial discrimination against individuals, leading in some cases to violence.

Most of those who commented negatively about the East Coast have never even been to East Coast... even if they have been there, its just for short transit to go to Redang, Tioman and Perhentian islands. Their negative comments are just biased, prejudices, ignorance and in most cases, are simply politically motivated.

terengganu and pahang have lots of arts and crafts and natural beauty, though their history does not go back that long.
kelantan is a very very ancient kingdom linked to java and to south vietnam (champa). the indonesian president joko widodo or jokowi has kin in kelantan too. and kelantan was the kingdom which spread islam to java. jakarta was also founded by a prince of kelantan.
kelantan is famous for native entrepreneurs especially women who rise high in life and do well in london, paris or new york.
