@@mimisezlol There was a reply to another comment that said that grey was intended to be there from the beginning, but since it wasn’t available initially, it was replaced with black. When it became available, they probably just went back to the original plan.
Tens of thousands of anonymous strangers who couldn’t even communicate with one another and could only animate one pixel at a time did this in 4 days… That’s honestly mind-blowing…
you can tell that one of the main difficulties were the quick switches between black and white due to the amount of pixels that had to be placed at the same time
You can also see the animation quality turning better and crisper over time - due to other people jumping in on the project, as well as everyone getting better at coordinating :)
I remember first opening this r/place ang going directly to my little pony section, looking a bit sideways and seeing an utterly random frame (was about 0:24), my first reaction was "hm, interesting they chose that frame to honor Bad Apple, it's recognizable enough", just to get a sudden realization of the insanity you guys decided to put yourself into.

I know people will animate Bad Apple on anything, but animating it on a constantly sabotaged canvas where you can only change something on your own every 5 minutes takes a lot of teamwork and dedication. Hello from one of the participating communities! (Gg.sumeru) The answer to your question is that there was a template that changed frames every couple of minutes, (like a really slow gif) so long as it was working, we could follow along. Im getting tired of people constantly antagonizing Canada when they dont even have any prior context to it, like, 'ooh, they deleted Reimu' well, it was trolls. The proof is that at the end Reimu was rebuilt and allowed onto the finished canada flag. If Canada was deleting Reimu, then why would they allow her to be built instead of shooting her down while she was just getting started being built?
Can we talk about how they were able to animate the entire Bad Apple video frame by frame but Canada couldn't draw a leaf
I'm glad the bad apple space was so close to canada's so everyone was too distracted fucking with them instead of us, lmao!
@@YokiDokiPanicfrfr
Because we kept getting attacked because people thought it was funny 🙄🖕🏻
@@LordOfElysium i also participated in r/place and yeah, trolls are a pain in the ass
Also doesn’t help the Germans decided “yea lemme get a bite of this shit”
it's so sick how they could immediately adapt to the new colors they added at 1:39, felt like perfect timing too for the ball of light w shading
It was a coordinated effort tbf; you can see that r/touhou signed it at the bottom, and I've been told a discord was the headquarters for the animation. My question is how they decided to add grey
@@mimisezlol There was a reply to another comment that said that grey was intended to be there from the beginning, but since it wasn’t available initially, it was replaced with black. When it became available, they probably just went back to the original plan.
Tens of thousands of anonymous strangers who couldn’t even communicate with one another and could only animate one pixel at a time did this in 4 days…
That’s honestly mind-blowing…
There was communication though. A lot of the people involved were using a Discord channel to help coordinate.
@@IBeforeAExceptAfterKStill amazing that most cooperated and only a few were trolls
Title: Bad Apple on r/place
Me: Oh yes, Canada battle is sick
you can tell that one of the main difficulties were the quick switches between black and white due to the amount of pixels that had to be placed at the same time
the ying yang swirl at the end was so hard they had to get help from other communities to build it because of the sheer number of pixels being changed
@@Hyprst Yeah since not only is that the entire thing changing but it's changing constantly for quite a while
You can also see the animation quality turning better and crisper over time - due to other people jumping in on the project, as well as everyone getting better at coordinating :)
There was a lot of "holding your pixels" for moments like that, so the sudden transitions would look a bit more smooth
It's funny how coincidentally similar it looked to heavy video compression.
I was working on a couple of the designs close to bad apple, and I kept looking at it each time I came onto place and going "nope, still can't work out what it is." And then after place was complete, I found this video and was actually shocked 😭😭
i put like 150 pixels total onto this and damn it turned out amazing
i was there for like 10 hours in a row, i went to sleep at 9am :D
the 'screen-turning-from-black-to-white-or-opposite' effect like in 0:43 is somehow much cooler ironicly because pixels turn black slowly, I love it
I was genuinely amazed by this. I know people will animate Bad Apple on anything, but animating it on a constantly sabotaged canvas where you can only change something on your own every 5 minutes takes a lot of teamwork and dedication. It was especially cool to see the animation get smoother towards the end (especially at the ying yang swirl) as more communities pitched in to help.
*Bad Apple ends
"Botting is cringe."

somehow, drawing a maple leaf is harder than animating bad apple
Drawing a maple leaf is so much harder if tons of people are trying to ruin it as well
@@moviastdyst yea, there wouldn't be much of an animation if Bad Apple was targeted like the Canadian flag was lol
They literally animate a maple leaf at 2:05
@@dabasilwoah i can't believe it maybe it's cause nobody is touching their animation and is focusing on ruining canada's flag 😱
@@Fanbter im not replying to the first reply, im replying to the original comment 😂 but yeah canada leaf is actually easy to make if not thousands of trollers spoils it
2:06 I like how people didn’t realise the line came from a Bad Apple frame and it shot STRAIGHT into Canada
Canada constantly getting raided was funny but miku constantly getting a nose then getting it taken away is also hilarious
It's insane to me just how quickly you all got your act together with it. You started animating bad apple while most places had like 12 pixels lol. And the way the shit breaks out the frame at 2:06 is just glorious.
The shit
It looks like a gun shooting kinda

Watching Canada fight for its fucking life while the 3 minute Bad Apple runs almost untouched plus people putting grey in it to make it more detailed is the best thing on the internet.
I just love how around 2:00 the shot broke the wall and hit canada
I love that smmmm
love the detail of reimu's hair starting purple like in the pc-98 era and turning brown
My genuine reaction is as the same as everyone else, cried after the Bad Apple animation ended 3:33
Respect to these 2 communities who recreated this kind of masterpiece.
And,
*Botting is Cringe*
3, r/hatsune also helped out a lot
And to a lot of randoms and other communities who helped
4. Genshin impact
There are a lot of communities helped btw, not just 2. And we're thankful for them
Touhou, osu!, Hatsune, Foxhole, Genshin, I think some of Neurosama all chipped in
Y'all remember how fucking pissed the Touhou fandom was when Canada tried covering up Reimu. Shit was hostile!
Not gonna lie, I'm not sure which required more patience / dedication. The Bad Apple Square or the Canadian flag.
Due to the sheer amount of greifing the Canadian flag had to deal with in terms of just the deployment on r/place they had more. In terms of the prep-work and planning things out definitely Bad Apple
I am scared of the Touhou community, if they can do this I can't even begin to imagine the other things they could do if they all came together and truly put their minds to it
Well Touhou community made their own animated anime, animated mv , high-quality fangame, popular plushies (fumo) and now Touhou 19 just officially out , could be more than that after this.... But chill it just an average day of Touhou community for that thing
3:14 canada finally draws a leaf
I’m glad that Canada’s beaver is in every Bad Apple timelapse. Huge respect from Poland!
how the f*** did you do this frame by frame?
communities of big subreddits and/or streamers used template overlays to organise themselves, but how do you do that with every other minute changing to the next frame?
my mind is officially blown 🤯
I have so much respect for you guys 🫡
us from the relatively small r/TheLastAirbender community even struggled with small static pieces
Hello from one of the participating communities! (Gg.sumeru)
The answer to your question is that there was a template that changed frames every couple of minutes, (like a really slow gif) so long as it was working, we could follow along. They also streamed the entire discord VC, with the predicted amount of people per frame, and mods directing the timing, so that they knew when they needed help for a big change. There was a website and everything to coordinate! Honestly was in awe at the level of planning it took.
@@gnouc20 that is so cool to hear
I loved to hear, see and witness all kinds of collaborations and alliances this year - from small to extremely bug ones like r/placeDE and many others supporting Papaplatte against xQc
We also had bunch of people help with griefer pixels purely out of respect I think?
I remember one call to action was something like "Our stuff can wait because it's a static image, Bad Apple _has_ to look good in the timelapse so go help them" And in the end, the attack wasn't even noticeable. We couldn't have done it without everyone helping.
@@Kairi-ou correction: the frames changed every 39 seconds

Nah, it’s one of the best things to happen in r/place across all the years.
Not forgiving canada for covering purple-haired girl on 1:22 (IDK HER NAME, SORRY OK?😕😕)

The amount of work its just incredible, immense respect for you all guys
Bad Apple fucking shooting canada and making it even harder for them to draw the leaf is truly poetic
The finger shot going into the Canadian flag was a really nice touch.
Also the Tohou character continually being brought back in Canada's flag is hilarious.
I love 2:05 because the damn laser goes out of the box.
the yin yang spinning at the end was crazy smooth, MASSIVE props 2 everybody who worked on this!
The constant fight to keep Canada from being banana is a small detail I just noticed now
Everyone talking about the canada war, but noone's mentioning that miku almost got where's waldo'd at 1:51 💀
The placement couldn't be better, leaf on the Canadian flag, the smile that keeps appearing and disappearing (anime girls on the left) and the bitcoiners trying to turn that P on coin into B 🤣😂
The anime girls are the main characters of the Touhou Project
the girls on the left and top are actually two characters from Touhou, which is what the song is a remix of, and where all the characters in Bad Apple come from
Also Osu!
The way it shoots across the Canadian flag was insane
I Love to see that there is a whole ass bad apple animation being shown on r/place and while this long period where the animation is going canada did not manage to make an acorn leaf
Being part of this was an honor and also the only reason why I even joined this year's r/place. It was such an amazing experience seeing the Touhou community and our many allies work together to create this masterpiece. I'm glad that I was able to place my pixels and contribute to the animation, because honestly, I've never been happier to be part of a community, I mean it. Respects to everyone who participated.
The fact that the whole Reddit united to not ruin, and to help make this is incredible
1:53 Perfect timing!
2:06 incredible show of collaboration, the bullet out of the square. It means that all the communities next to bad apples agreed to let their work be erased just for this effect, and I love this spirit of collaboration!
3:04 it's incredible to see the stars pixel when you know that it's exactly how it looks like in the origial clip, little stars moving around
Edit: seems like the things wasn't even planned xD how well this impromptu incidient goes along the animation is incredible still
There so muh details that impress me but I will stay at this-
The people who made all that are incredible!
I only helped once or two but I was busy elsewhere mostly

the bullet shooting through the border and across the screen was a really cool detail
There’s so much to keep track of outside the main focus that’s so funny to me
-Canada constantly trying to hold itself together
-The witch girl crying so hard that their tears spill down the box ~3 minutes in
-The P coin briefly turning into Bitcoin
-Osu turning into inso for a while
-The cut off sign at the top left that most likely says “F*** PUTIN!!!”
The ability to use grey pixels came at such a great time
I swear in 2028 I expect bad apple to be played out by microbes and they better do it flawlessly

why is no one talking about how the touhou characters cried in the end ?? that was so sweet
Last year i spent about 5 hours of my day working on the minecraft loading screen animation and i'm awestruck at how coordinated this is in comparison
Man, why would you watch Bad Apple when you can instead watch Canada fights for its dear life
Reimu getting constantly swallowed by canada only to revive is so epic tho
This feels like Bad Apple cheering for Canada to survive the onslaughts they receive while completing the canadian leaf
It is my honor to help touhou from r/hetsune to complete this, and Thanks to an Osu streamer,BTMC, streaming the whole template, cuz the frames are changing fast sometime
Canada fighting for its life fr
There's something I find weirdly satisfying about how Canada managed to fix the leaf of our flag right as the music video ended
Once again we see canada struggling to draw their leaf
2:07 for a split second you can see when a streamer tried to attack with green pixels
Bad apple: Playing all chil like
Canada's flag: **Pained screaming**
Canada struggling to make a leaf while an entire animation is going on right next to them
The fact that no one even laid a FINGER on bad apple shows how much a community can make without bots. Also canada got their flag right :)
Oh there were MANY times people tried to attack bad apple, as seen by random colored pixels there. But osu, hatsune, and many other communities helped protect it while touhou focused on animating.
@gerrymon9679 good thing no streamers tried to mass Greif it tho
@@Dragonnotfound_ a 7k+ viewer streamer attacked with green right before the leaves were formed, and our allies stepped up to help. So effective was the defence that it was bairly noticeable, and even the streamer was impressed.
