I used to come to Madras during my school holidays in the 70's from Coimbatore. From Madras Central while traveling to Adyar, I used to see this small temple named "Bodyguard Muneeswarar Koil." I was very amused to note the name Bodyguard and every time I cross Pallavan House, there will be a smile on my face seeing this temple. It was a very small temple, may be 4 feet by 4 feet, protruding out of the Pallavan House's compound wall, and hardly I have seen any devotees in front of the temple on a normal day. Only recently, when I got to travel on the same road, I noticed how big the temple has grown and was famous. I agree with Mr. Sriram's opinion about the origin of the name, that it is not clear how it must be related to the Colonial Era, as I vividly remember the temple did not have any historical features 30-40 years back.
Chennai was and is the busiest city in Tamilnadu. The only difference is there was no traffic commotion in those days, particularly there were not many two-wheelers in those days and it was easy to walk in the streets 😀
I agree with you Sir. After existence of bus depo & Pallavan/Metro Transport Office, for the purpose of making Pooja for launching of new govt. buses, I predict a small temple was constructed by the transport employees. This needs further confirmation.
@@RaviSankar-zi8iv True, I also thought in the early years that this temple must have been constructed by the Pallavan employees as it was just a makeshift structure and did not resemble a proper temple. Any viewers here who have friends or family members who worked in the early days of Pallavan can inquire them about the history of this temple.

Sir This is story of Muneeswarar temple near Presidency school (PT school) Egmore. You can see people coming on BMW and praying to Muneeswarar temple. This story told by mom Smt. PREMAVATHY. Now she is 72 years old and when she was 9 years old and studying at Presidency girls school she use to go to her classmate Suguna house and from there both of them use to go to school. Suguna father owner of Suguna cafe opposite Egmore railway station and during that time owner of 26 taxis told this story to my mom. It was a rainy night and he was a taxi driver at Egmore railway station and taxi owner was another person. An old man approached him at night one AM and asked the taxi fare to go to Presidency girls high school Egmore. The driver Suguna father told him one rupee. After dropping him just opp that school the old man gave one rupee and disappeared. Suguna father frightened left the place. Next day morning again he approached the place and enquired. He was told that there is one muneeswaran temple and many people saw him as old man. He kept that one rupee in his almirah and later started Suguna cafe from which he could purchase lot of cars. He also purchased a house at Aravamudan gardens Egmore where his daughter Suguna lives. This story told by my mom and I started worshipping him. I am a senior scientist in DRDO ..Dr S. Suresh. The original building was purchased by the British from the Madra family in 1750. The bodyguards of the British governor used to live here; so it used to be called Body Guard Lines Road and was only later renamed to Pallavan Salai. This could be one reason why people began referring to the deity by the name.” My father was a Postmaster who served more than 3 Decades in the same area and retired. He explained the origin. This is True.
Till 1995 when I used to go via this, Angala Parameswari temple attracts huge crowds whereas opp Muniswarar then known as this only attracts comparatively less crowds. Now completely changed
Wonderful talks. Very much informative one. Could you please also talk about the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) where madras was exchanged for louisbourg. It would be great to hear from you more on the story of how madras was captured by the French and later how it was returned back.
