I am a programmer and stats consultant for market research. I do data analysis programming and use 6 screens. To program one study I have a minimum of 4 programs open (up to 6). If I am working on multiple projects the screen real estate is very valuable. I dont understand a minimalist setup and being a programmer. We arent photographers. I have a surface book, a zenbook duo (dual screen laptop), galaxy tab s9 ultra, and gaming pc. I have an ultrawide, a regular monitor and a smart monitor mounted above. I also mount my zfold phone beside the tablet. I have a dedicated keyboard and mouse for my main pc and I have a keyboard and mouse that each have 3 bluetooth input switches so that I can switch between all the other devices with the click of a button. I program about 100 studies a year that vary in sizes greatly. Currently looking to take on more work as we have upped our capacity.

When running docker/podman/OCI containers, a Mac is literally the worst choice. The way how its implement adds an extra virtualization layer.
And AFAIK some sockets are not passed through properly. Add to that issues with volume mounting. Wanna try it, go for a debugging session with xDebug (PHP).
Even windows does it way better since WSL2.
I also recommend 2 or 3 screens instead of one. Or you may just whish to alt tab /switch virtual desctops constantly.
For a mouse I recommend a "vertical" mouse in a size of palm. Helps against a crampy hand.
If you like gestures, well just go for gnome 3. Load it up with the right plugins and go be awesome.
For a shell, switch to zsh, add oh my zsh and (powerlevel10k) and enjoy on of the best shells you have ever seen.

Laptop? Nah, why would I waste money on a mobile device when I'm always sitting at the same place, where the monitor and the keyboard is.

      20 years is very conservative.
I'm a software developer for over 20 years now. And with chatGPT i can do 80% of my work. You still need to know what you do cause its mostly not 100%.
But with the right prompting you'll do the work of an hour in 5-10 minutes.
Now think of things like autoGPT, the works Stanford does with training new models with the help of existing LLMs.
5-10 years and alot of white collar jobs will significantly change. Imagine using LLMs to give individualized teaching to children (e.g with special needs).
I hypothesize that in just the next 2-3 years. You will be able to just tell an Ai with context info of your app to write plugins for you. Its not even that hard.
