- If you have knees that cave in (a condition known as knee valgus) then you are going to want to watch this video. Whether your knock knees are present only during the bottom portion of a squat or are there all the time, you are going to want to fix them since leaving them alone is going to eventually wreak havoc on your body.

The condition known as knee valgus refers to the inward pointing of the knees. This creates stress on the inside of the knee joint in the form of tensile gapping of the medial collateral ligament, and compression forces and stress on the outside of the joint. Because of the altered position of the knee joint, your movement is affected and the repercussions are often felt higher or lower in the body; namely in the ankles, hips or back.
It is important to understand that the knee joint itself is a consequential joint. That means, that it is simply a hinge joint that is at the mercy of what is going on at the ankle below and the hip above. If the mobility or strength of the ankle is altered then the knee is going to be affected by the impact these changes have on the tibia (the lower half of the knee joint). If the hips are too tight or lacking the strength required to stabilize the femur (the upper half of the knee joint) then you are going to have problems at the knee as well.
In this video, I show you how to ascertain whether you have issues in the ankle that you want to address. As you will see, the ankle is also affected by what happens at the foot. When you have flat feet or over pronated feet, the joints above are dramatically affected. It is important to understand the causes and the effects of flat feet in order to be able to intervene and do something about it so the normal knee motion and mechanics can be restored.
Most of the time, flat feet will cause the ankle to cave inward and this drags the tibia along with it. The stress is immediately transmitted up to the knees in the form of a valgus. The peroneal muscles on the outside of the lower leg get adaptively shortened and tight from being in this position too long. They are not the cause of the pronation however. Their tightness is simply the result of the pronation so you want to make sure you strengthen these muscles as well.
The muscles of the ankle that act as a stirrup that supports the joint are the peroneals and the posterior tibialis muscle. Both of these can be strengthened with the exercises for your ankle shown here with just a single band. Of course, you will want to stretch the peroneals as well and address the soft tissue changes that have caused tightness as shown with the two drills in the video.
As for the hip, weakness of the external rotators and abductors is almost always the cause of troubles at the knee. Why is this? Because no matter how many squats we do, we are simply not addressing the rotation at the hip without paying attention to some of the smaller exercises that often get overlooked. This is critical. Here I show you an exercise to strengthen both the abductors of the hip without any equipment and an exercise for your hip rotators that requires just a band.
Either of these can be done just a few times a week and you will see a dramatic improvement in the condition of your knee valgus. When you combine the drills for both the ankle and the hip together, watch as your knee positioning corrects itself and you start moving better than you ever have before. Your strength should improve as well since your body will finally be operating out of its desired alignment.

Jeff, thank you!!!!
First, you fixed my shoulder impingement and internal rotation problems, and now, you are fixing my wife's chronic knee valgus. We are deeply grateful. And, to this day, you are the only physical therapist I have ever heard not prescribe more internal rotation exercises for an internal rotation problem. Common sense to me, but surprising how often people give themselves more of what they don't need. If you got too much of 1 thing, do the opposite - counteract it.
Rant over. We love your channel and I CANNOT WAIT to meet you!!!! 😎

Those were very good stretches. I have not one but both flat feets and its been causing pain in my plantar, knees, glutes medias and lower back. You're videos makes me understand things that I am not aware of and helps me alot.. Really thank you Jeff 💕
6 years later and this video helped tremendously! My orthopedic doctor said my knee issue is a combo of low arch support (pronation), slight externally rotated knee cap and knock knees. Basically said everything you’ve mentioned but you’ve broken it down to the root cause and how to tackle the issue physiologically. Thank you!
Nothing like a fully researched and totally easy to comprehend video. Keep up! Thank you for this one.
The GOAT of body mechanics, rehabilitation and strength......After 40 years of motosports, racing everything and a ton of surgeries and broken bones. I wish I knew of Jeff many many years ago I would still be racing to this day.....I've never felt better but I have a long way to go......Thanks Jeff....
this guy is so good at what he's doing. earned my subscription. I thought it comes from jeans and can not be normalized. you're such an angel
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! You are saving me pain, turmoil, surgery, and hopelessness. I'm going to get on this today. Gawd-bless you for sharing this incredible self-healing protocol.
I just found this channel and I have to say, The knowledge this guy has is priceless.
Unfortunately for me years of childhood obesity have permanently affected the bone structure of my legs, leaving me with permanently deformed knock knees despite losing 100 lbs. Being told by multiple specialists and physical therapists that my condition couldn't be fixed from anything outside of surgery sucked, a lot. I thought it would prevent me from marching in a drum corps, which had always been a dream of mine. Despite this, I did as many exercises as possible to help me with this issue, and I eventually did end up marching, something I thought would be impossible for me :)
Similar situation here since I was young up until 17ish I was pushing close to 300 pounds, My highest weight was around 292, from old pictures I can see how badly I had knocked knees, right now I'm at about 180 and it's gotten better but it's still fairly noticeable, luckily hasn't stopped me from running and weight lighting but I have constant knee pain where it can just ache if it's too cold out sometimes
Please start megadosing vitamin D3 and take vitamin k2 or a powerful probiotic.
My dad has dislocated both shoulders multiple times and doctors wanted to do surgery, obviously not going to spend money on a 60 year old injury when all we need is pain relief. Before he couldn't even raise it above his ear but after lots of massages and light weights he can reach all the way above his head without pain.
Great determination.
And i also had a dislocated shoulder which i had surgery on when i was only 18, i cant sleep on my sides anymore since i slept on the other shoulder too much, and i think its damaged that one as well. Im constantly stretching, massaging, moving, drinking lots of water, and all things like that.
anything cN be fixed, just because they said it can’t doesn’t mean that’s true, you can learn how the hip, feet, and pelvis all relate to the knee in order to fix it

Very few sources have been as thorough in all the affected areas of the body that contribute to any one issue and in addressing all of those contributors as yours. These videos have brought me great relief in the knowledge that the problems I've been having with alignment and tight/weak groups are reversible. Thank you.
its so crazy. I've had flat feet and knocked kness for as long as I can remember. I just though it was on of those things you were born with and learned to love them both. This video was such a shocker. thank you Jeff!!
Thanks Jeff, this video was wicked. Felt instant pain release from my knees and ankles (had this pain for 3 years). If you could make more vids related to this that would be great!
These excersises were easy until, I started to do your low back pain excercises, now they’re extremely difficult. But that’s a good thing, I’m seeing great results!
Did you see any great results in your knock knee?
Not only Jeff is a great fitness coach, being a physical therapist is such a wonderful perk that we all are blessed with.
Thank you Jeff, from the heart.
This video is a god send, I've had years of knee pain, two rounds of knee surgery for a maltracking knee cap and I've been given orthotics to fix my overpronation but this is the first time I've actually understood what's going on with my legs. I've recently started running and my hips are suffering as a result so I'm hoping this will fix my issue!
Holy Toledo! This video just changed my life. My flat feet have plagued me by causing foot pain, but I had no clue they were causing my knock knees (which I’ve been trying not to hate for as long as I’ve noticed them)! You are about to make me look and walk so much less like a dork. Not to mention, this is probably why I have totally unexplained knee pain. Seriously - thank you SO much!

Thank you so much for this video! I have a lot of posture issues and learned a lot about them in your video's. One of my issues is having flat feet. I have supportive soles for my shoes but didn't know any exercises to help it get better. Again, thanks for the tips and exercises!
i learn so much as a massage therapist with all this video that some customer told me that i fixed problems that the other didnt do, so god bless all your entire life and who loves you jeff , i give the link of your videos to everyone,, cheers
Most concise video I've seen on this subject. Great exercise examples that do not require expensive equipment.
Jeff, I had some severe inner knee pain come from out of the blue a few days ago. Totally debilitating. I've purchased a couple of Athlean-X programs over the years, so I often watch your corrective videos too. Doing these stretches and correctives immediately started bringing relief to that inner knee pain. It got me thinking, if you ever considered putting together an entire program of correctives that is a SKU I would buy.
Thank you Jeff for being so informative. I have valgus knees and it sucks, nice to know I can help ease the pain with your stretches. Did the band for the rotator, felt good. You're awesome! Thank you!
Are you knees normal now?
🤣lol i have the same doubt

Have to say jeff!!!have been watching you videos for some time, as a MPT my self, you are truly great clinician, and understanding beyond a lot of physical therapist nor sport therapist nor athlete trainer. keep up the good work. i have been spreading your name with my colleagues.. TNK
I have this problem, the chirnic version, just had my 6th knee surgery, 3rd ACL. I'll definitely incorporate these exercises into my rehab to ensure I get stronger and try to change this Valgus issue I have. Thanks for the vid, top notch as always.
absolutely superb! I am an advanced hockey ice skater. I was having severe right outside knee pain while skating only. My right knee would buckle inward due to the force of pushing off. Followed exercises as shown and they have been a great help! Thank you very much. Without a doubt, the best video for knee valgus out there.
How many sets and how many times a week did u use to do this? Has it really helped after 4 years?
Yet another INCREDIBLE video! Thank you so much for what you do for the fitness community!!!
Awesome Jeff! Thank you so much for posting this! This makes so much sense for things that my clients face. It's so key to have directions to work the specific muscles that control the motions, starting at the bottom, 'cause it all starts at the feet. Great video thank you man.
I just wanted to express some genuine gratitude for this video and the information presented; I know you benefit from monetization (probably) but this is some "good deed" product to humanity--be proud!!
I like how he got straight to the point, and explained it with science. Not a minute of my time was wasted watching this, and I feel like it'll really help me in the future. I'm 13, and I don't wanna have knee problems when I'm this young lol now I know what to do, thanks.
Thank you!! 💕 I’m a tad knocked kneed while in flat shoes and while working out. I never thought there was anything I could do to change it other than watch my form when I work out but here was this video. Thank you!!!

I thought this was an amazing channel before....
I have dealt with flat feet/pronation problems for my entire life! I just discovered recently what the actual issue was. I had no clue before.
And you just explained everything in about 12 minutes.
Amazing. Thank you so much. This video means a lot to me. It has been extremely frustrating dealing with this issue, especially for running since I have amazing cardio yet running is physically painful on my knees/joints. Thanks!!!
yeah all my life was pain with such feet too...but these tips on his channel are the best i've heard so far...can't believe no one told me before. let's keep up the good work then
I'll try this but I don't know if it will fix anything. Might make it better I guess. I want to also go higher on squats but my knees hurt a few days later and I'm thinking it's my really flat feet.
He also has a really good video with Rayman showing how to strengthen the tendons in your foot to help alleviate pain and put you in a better position for all athletic work since you’re always on your feet. Probably just search flat feet on his channel. It was very helpful for me.
Flat feet squad gathering here. LOL. Jeff also have some old vids about flat feet, go watch and add those exercises and understanding into your arsenal. We may born with flat feet, yet we don't have to be cursed with it, we shall fight against the fate! 💪🏽

Hey mate, hope you're doing well. Is there any noticeable results from the last few months?
This is exactly what my physical therapist was trying to tell me yesterday, but you did a much better job of explaining it. My knees were caving in on squats and leg press and he was just basically like "your quads and hips are weak. do these exercises." He didn't say anything about the foot, but two of the exercises you mentioned are the same ones he has me doing.
show this to your physio also
My physical therapist said that it can't be fix only make it stronger
I knew you would finally do this topic.
Excellent, detailed and very clear. Doing a great job for years, very much appreciated, the go to place online for genuine gains, fixes and knowledge. Thanks.

Holy shit mate. Your videos since I subscribed are just a compilation of my problems and how to solve them. Don't know if I should say "congratulations on knowing your audience" or ,"stop following me" .
Did you fix your knock knees?
Hahahaha!
I've been running since last year, and had a tibialis posterior injury.... never recovered from that. I thought it was purely overtraining, but probably wasn't the only thing - but even though I had some consultations, I was never told what was going on. I notice my right knee was pointing inwards, told my PT, he said nothing about that. A couple of weeks ago, my right arch was hurting and felt like collapsing (both are naturally low but the other one is OK). I researched a lot and found this video really helpful and insightful to help correct my knee rotation and all the problems it causes, along with other video that help my feet muscles... thank you so much!!
Most of my clients needs this video! Thanks for sharing.

Hey,do you still have x knees?
Jeff you have just gave an answer to all of my bone and joint problems. I never realized they were all related. My flat feet caused knock knees, which contributed to my hip rotating inwards, which then forced out my tailbone and caused anterior pelvic tilt, which led to my messed up back and neck. Massive thank you to ATHLEAN-X.
Had ACL surgery 2 years ago and have since returned to football. I noticed this earlier this year my knee started swelling regularly after a game and the next day I would really lose a lot of my range of motion on the leg. I was blaming my knee for all of this but since I came across this channel and started doing these exercises addressing the hips & feet, along with other various exercises, I've found things have really improved. For example I played football yesterday and still have full range of motion today and no knee swelling!
I also got insoles for my football boots to help with any flat feet issues and as soon as I came home I was regularly icing my knee. Delighted with the progress so far!
This is a great video, many variations of these exercises to correct excess pronation, knock knees, duck feet walk etc.
I only became flat footed after a foot injury and sciatic nerve that got injured around the same time. After than I was limping around and it healed a bit then got worse. After a year of struggling I've gone from high arched to flat footed. After seeing a podiatrist he pointed out that I have over pronation in that same side my injuries were worse on. I kept checking it out in a mirror to realize my right knee was also becoming knocked with my left just starting to follow.
I'm saving this video to add into my daily life. I'm really hoping it can reverse the damage that has been done over the last year or so.
This has PLAGUED me my whole life. I have always told people I just “have bad knees” and I “can’t do squats.” Being female, no one really pushed me out of this until recently. THANK you. I’m gonna go to the gym momentarily and start correcting this. (I have the first, transient variation. It’s harder to spot and no one really believed me when I said my knees did weird things and hurt when I did squats.)
Hey how you doing? Please can you give me some updates did you get any results? How long did it take?
This is an amazing explanation. As a trainer it is frustrating to only hear cues around the gym such as "drive out at the knee" when there are dozens of other factors as explained in this video. Often the cause of an issue is complex and needs to be approached at all angles. And this video is very helpful to solve this particular issue! Passing along to a client now who has struggled with this so we can implement together.
Glad to have you on youTube
