- Seeing if this 1949 Plymouth will run after 30+ years.
Disclaimer: We are not mechanics, this is just our journey of learning how to work on this engine and get this car running again. We are learning along the way. Hope you guys enjoy! Part 2 will be coming next year.
Good to see a couple of young folks wrenching, having fun and learning about these old automobiles, reminds me of my youth.

of mine had one of these.he and his dad rebuilt the motor.put 30k over size
alum.pistons in,took 12k off the head.split the manafold,put nash rambler
mufflers.sounded sweet and that car would run.i was 18 back then.86
now.enjoyed this much.

Great to see a couple young guys doing this. I'm 75, my first car was a 51 Plymouth Suburban Station Wagon , my second was a 53 Plymouth, and I just got a 37 Dodge Bros. Sedan and it has the same engine. I will be doing the same things you Are doing soon but I'm lucky my 37 is not frozen up. Congratulations , good luck, and have some fun with all you will learn. One thing, those old 6 volt starter motors never did turn very don't be surprised by that. Keep up the good work I will be following.

Working on the car now, new video will be coming this year. Yeah the 6 volt starters are real slow....that's why we got the thicker battery cables to get it going faster. Thanks for the comment!

my 1st car was 1948 chev i was 14 , my dad and i did a resto together , i had it good to go buy the time i got my drivers lisence at 16 , drove it to high school four years , i still have it at age 63 i have allways done all work myself i have drove it off and on all my life !!! 6volt and babbit rods too , you have a great car to start off with those ole 6 cyl go forever !
That car brings back memories one of my Great Uncles had a 1950 Plymouth that funky light green color with a sun visor bought it new. He drove it up until he was about 95 before he quit driving lived a month short of his 100th birthday. He had given the car to one of his sons, one of grandsons drove it wrecked it my brother and I was going to see if we could fix it but was just too much damage. To a 4 or 5 year old in the mid 60's the back seat seemed huge.
even if you can start that engine, it needs attention probably leaking valves seized rings and possibly pitted cylinders.
you are very lucky that the ignition condenser is still OK, usually, it fails when the vehicule is stored in less than ideal conditions and you're putting the vehicule back in service.

Congratulations! I have a the very same model in Brunswick blue. Mine came back to life with a minimum of work. Not a glamour girl but an excellent starter car. Parts are easy to get and you can't kill that 6 cylinder. Good luck with her!

I use to have a 46 Plymouth Coupe 2dr. Really nice car and wish I still had it. My uncle gave it to me when I was 16... My uncle had driven the car all over the United States. Him and a buddy painted it marina blue metalic, looked really good! Rode nice. He also got a flat head engine from some women that hers husband had died and the engine came out of a 51 plymouth and put in the 46 Plymouth. It always ran great, ran just like was new. Didn't have very many miles on it and was just like new, not many miles on it and I don't know how long it set after the womans husband had died... I miss the car, and I am 73 now... Seems like it got pretty good gas mpg. Back then, gas was cheap compared to now... I aso had a 48 Ford 2dr. Flat head V-8, got rid of it before I got it running...
So glad to see someone tinkering and having fun. You may find that that particular car has Overdrive as there's a chrome handle just under the steering column. If it has overdrive, you'll absolutely love it; makes the car able to do over 55 on the highway without high RPM.
Thanks for the comment! That handle on the left side of the steering column is the hood release lever. Did you see a different one?
@@coopersimmsvlogs498 My mistake! My '53 Plymouth doesn't use a hood release.
Check your timing again ,that can cause back firing through the carb . Good luck DON"T give up !

I used a 8 volt battery in mine and the 2 extra volts makes a difference... unless you want to convert it over to 12 volts. You have to set the voltage regulator for the 8 volt battery...
An easier way to try to turn the engine is to raise the car enough to get under it, remove the cover from the bell housing, and pry against the flywheel teeth with a large screwdriver or a crowbar. No need to take the rad out that way.
Yes we ended up doing that later on in the video.

Learned to drive on the two door model by dodge , a Wayfarer. Straight six, oil bath air cleaner, tube radio and three in the tree. The Bomb

When you turned on the radio I'm guessing you had to wait on the tubes to warm up before sound would play through the speaker. Those old am radios are so cool.

well done guys it's a runner. Yes hook up a proper fuel system. Boat tank and click-clack pump. You don't need new valves. Run it for longer and maybe the rings will come around and you wont need to change them either.
Yes I'm thinking that we'll just work on the cooling system and then hook up fuel to it and run it longer and the rings might come back around. Thanks for watching
49 Plymouth My Very First Car That Flat Head Six Was A Very Tough Engine!!
I would recommend hooking a 12 volt source directly to the starter this way you can get it spinning over faster to get it started and you can get the rings unseated Plus get some ether starting fluid as well you can do this without hurting the starter
Yeah I've seen many people do that but since it we are new at it, we wanted to see if we could get it going with just the 6v. I was pleasantly surprised that it did work
hint: fill vent tube with gas. it will put gas in the carb bowl. open the idle set screw 2 turns from closed. it may work.
Thank you. Yeah we tried doing that but maybe we just didn't put enough in. Also we just got so excited when it started to run that we completely forgot about the gas haha!
Have fun fellows.It's a good engine.I've done quite a few of these old flat head 6's from Chrysler.When redoing the cooling system replace the water pump and the water distribution tube which is behind the water pump.If it's still there or parts of it it's in the oval shaped hole and runs the length of the engine.If you can see it put 2 large screwdrivers along the sides,crush the tube and pull it out.If rotted or gone the car will over heat and a new t-stat won't make a difference.Good luck and have fun.😀😀
Thanks for the info. I was reading about pulling those distribution tubes. We'll get it out of there somehow and definitely replace it. We'll also replace the water pump and thermostat housing.
Thanks for the reply. There are 4 styles of T-stat housings.So you have to get the right T-stat.The housings will all interchange but not the T-stat.You have to pull the rad in order to get the tube out.That same motor was used up to and including 1959. @@coopersimmsvlogs498

The intake valve and exhaust valve doesn't look much difference in size?
Might have broke the top ring or rings beating on the piston because it was stuck to the cylinder wall?

What is the point of just talking about what has happened rather then filming and showing absolutely zero , The whole point is to see progress from what it was to a complete rebuild or restoration, If you are unable to produce this I would say try something completely different but don’t waste viewers time by videoing you two just explaining what you have done.
Well technically the video said "will it run" it didn't say "full restoration". And it did run. We like talking and explaining what we are doing.

YEP, THE SAME TAIL LIGHTS AS OURS. MY PARENTS MIGHT HAVE BOUGHT IT NEW, WHEN DAD CAME HOME FROM WORLD WAR TWO HE GAT A BRAND NEW NASH, THAY MUST HAVE TRADED IT FOR THE PLYMOUTH.
