  • The 2024 basketball off-season is here for a lot of you. This is a time where you can either make a jump in your game or fall behind other players. In this video, I want to give you 7 strategies you can use to approach the off-season in the best way possible.
    Should you be playing AAU basketball? How should you attack your workouts? How beneficial is lifting to your progress? These are some of the questions I want to answer in this video.

    Im in the middle of my basketball season but when the off season wiil arrive my plan is to fly to the us and go to a camp my main goal is to get a d1 offer

      Wow, that’s a big time plan! Hope it works out, but remember, it’s not all about playing d1. It’s about the process of getting better. Keep that in mind!

      Also, i love the content that you put out and i got a question what is the best way to get a scholarship for an international basketball player?

      I don't have all the answers for this unfortunately. I know that in a lot of countries, there are certain coaches who are well connected to US colleges. For instance, national team coaches usually know how to place players in the US and get them exposure if the player is good enough. But like I said, I don't know enough on this to give you sound advice. You can always put together some video of you playing and email it to coaches. Most college coaches have their email on the team's website.

    This video has really inspired me. I feel like sometimes us young players take things to seriously and devote ourselves to the grind and ball is life and all that stuff, but then struggle staying consistent and just waste time instead. I thin those last two tips are really crucial because most people don’t play college or make the pros and even then they still have the rest of there life left. So this summer I want to really focus on being consistent with basketball but also expanding my interests and giving myself consistent rest and TRYING NEW THINGS! Amazing video Tucker❤

      You are 100% right! Even for me, playing professionally, I need to realize eventually I’m going to have to move on to something else in my life. The earlier you can realize this the more prepared you will be for anything life throws at you. I’m so glad you got that message!

      Btw. during the off season, we try to do the following, 5 days a week-
      1-1.5 hours of shooting, followed by 30-45 minutes weight training.
      As a dad, my boys and I appreicate consistent time we get to spend together on this journey.

      I think planning ahead of time when you are going to workout and what you are going to do during the workout can be really helpful. For instance, nowadays if I am going to train, I never just go to the gym without some plan in my head of what I want to get better at. I take some time beforehand to sketch out what the workout will look like so I don't waste my time.

    Love the video, and thank you for all your great advice. I was wondering what you do to stretch and feel loose while playing. I always feel like my legs are dead when I’m playing. Maybe it’s that I’m training too much or something else. Thanks for the help.

      Could be training too much, or too hard. You shouldn't feel tired all the time in your games. That is why I always say you don't need to be training for 3 hours at a time. If you are focused and get in for an hour or 90 minutes, you will still get a lot out of the workout.
      Of course, getting your body warmed up before a game is really important. Try and get a lot of shots up, and get some kind of sweat in before your games. You see NBA players getting workouts in before games because it actually loosens their body up and prepares them for playing the game.

      There are so many great dribbling drills all over RUclips. In my opinion, it is kind of hard to do dribbling wrong as long as you are pushing yourself, so get creative with your dribbling workouts!

    I don’t know if it’s just me, but last off season, I played AAU ball on the weekends, and trained my basketball skills in on the weekdays. I feel like if you’re committed to getting better you can balance out training and games. Also getting in love games is one of the best ways to getting better so you have live games and training during the off season.

      That is basically how I went about it in high school. It can definitely be balanced as long as you approach things in the right way.

    I really enjoyed this video! But I have a question for you : When I play basketball, I feel like I don't move smooth like a lot of good players do. Is this a confidence issues or is there any actual reasoning for it? Also how would I change it?

      Could be partly confidence, if you aren't sure in your movements. For instance, when you catch the ball, you can either shoot it, pass it, or drive it. If you are unsure in what you are going to do or don't react right away, your movements can seem kind of choppy. Be sure of the decisions you make on the court, even if they aren't always going to turn out to be the right one.

    Hey Love your content!! Do you think you could talk about the minutes gained or lost in D1 D2 and D3 and what should THE GOAL be as a high schooler who benches? I’m a 6th or 7th man and I really need advice😅

      Thank you! I'm a little confused on your question😂 Are you asking how many minutes you need to play in high school? The answer is, it totally depends on the team you are on. Obviously the higher level the team, the higher level the players, the harder it will be to get tons of minutes.

    i just played a tournament (2x2 3rd place for 17 teams) but im not proud, i was not the oldest (14) but the tallest 6'2+ without shoes or socks and basically everyone said i played the best individually (coaches random people and also other teams) and i also think it is true but i didnt play good enough to win in the half-finals (lost by 1) great video and i need to trail a LOOOOT more

      ​@@TuckerRichardsonYou propably arent gonna respond but i just came from a 4 team 5x5 tournament got 3rd place, sprained my ankle at the beggining of the 2nd game (for 3rd place) but still playes no matter what and i have won the mvp, but i still need to work on my mind cuz i was really stressed during the first game any tips from a pro player?

    Great video as always! 100% agree on AAU. Personally, I’d love to see a video from a different perspective. I’m 99% going to school for academics (a D1 School) so it’s not likely I’m making the school team. Other than club and intramural basketball What other ways can I express my love for the game?

      Wow, pretty cool situation you are in. Depending on the school, there could be lots of opportunities. If you really still want to be around the sport, you could try and be a manager of the team, or even try to walk on. Also it will be cool to just be able to go to games and support the basketball team. And of course, most colleges have other gyms where students are playing pickup all the time, so take advantage of that!

    Hey man I love the content. So i heard u got better at staying confident after misses and i find myself struggling with that. Do u have any tips to work on the mental part of the game?

      I've made a few videos on this. For me, it has really been about not associating makes and misses with success in basketball. I'll give you an example. Last night in my recent game, I actually went 2-10 from 3. I've been shooting really well this year, but I had an off night. However I was able to stay confident with my shot throughout the game and keep shooting because I have developed this mentality that the result of the shot doesn't matter. Instead I focus on my training and all the reps I have gotten in to get my shot to this point, and I know that I should be taking that shot every time, make or miss.

    Tucker im having 9 point games but all the points come from 3's. I was wondering if you have any advice about how to get into the lane more. Love the vids btw❤

      If you are shooting it well, like it sounds like you are, you could try using that to your advantage. Pump fake defenders and go by them, or just attacking hard closeouts on the catch will give you more opportunities to get to the rim.

    hey coach tucker i was wondering if you could make an in depth video on all aspects of playing overseas. game day, travel, day to day life, etc. it would be very helpful, i want to play pro but i believe i started basketball too late and don’t have the resources to play nba basketball (im a freshman and have been hooping for 4 years) this would be much appreciated

      It’s going to be different for everyone. Like I mentioned, I usually train 5-6 days every week in the off season, with at least one rest day each week totally off from basketball. This has worked for me, but I’m also not playing AAU anymore. So if you are also on a team, you still need to be training but maybe not everyday. As long as you are putting aside time to really work on your skills, you should continue to improve over long stretches of time.

    Yeah, AAU is interesting... I don't plan on my son attending too much AAU. My goal is for him to play in S. Korea every summer to gain friends and culture with his other country (he's half Korean). If anything, I hope he can play for their national team (for U16 etc.), and see where we can go from there. But he is only 1.5 years old so... haha I also want him to swim, get exercise with less impact on his joints, and if he is tall with a good vert, that shortens the track! :D

    My season didn’t end but it will prob end a little before summer but in my offseason as a 12 years old, I am going to join an academy that gives you a plan and you need to train every day except one rest day and also go to their gym once a week so ya ima be grinding

    how did you join your aau team, i live in sacramento county in cali and i have searched all over the internet and asked many people and for some reason i can’t find any aau teams that are available

      I’m sure you can find teams in your area that you can try out for, especially in a big city. In NJ, where I’m from, there are a ton of teams, so I never had trouble finding them as I got older. It’s about figuring out if you are ready to play AAU, and then try and find the best situation possible.

    The problem for me is where I live AAU is basically a must to make even an elementary school team and I was talking to the HS coach and he said you have to play AAU to even be considered

      That is a tough situation. Sounds like you will have to play on the AAU team then. Just make sure you are putting work in by yourself as well!

    What level of basketball do you play? In some vids I've seen u with a Colgate NCAA shirt, some videos I've remembered you playing pro in Finland, I honestly don't know.

      I played in college at Colgate, and right now I am playing professionally in Finland. I use both because most people don't know much about my overseas team😂

    Hey man I’m a freshmen with a lot of guard skills but I’ve been playing big I wanna train to become a guard my next season I have a good jumpshot and pretty good finishing with decent ball handling do you have any tips to help me with that switch

      Just make sure you put yourself in situations where you have to handle the ball and make decisions like a guard would. That is how you get the feel of playing more from the guard position.

      You don’t need to start playing AAU at 12. If anything, this off-season is a great time for you to make a jump in your skills. Find other players your age in your area and get in the gym with them. Push each other and yourself and you will see a big improvement!

      Train, train, train. You are at a point in your life where you can make a big jump from middle school to high school, but that only comes from the work you put in!

    I’m currently training and playing great in my senior season.
    In about 4 months I will have a 25 day trip and I don’t know how much access to basketball courts I will have, should I train indoors like my handles and stuff like in the pandemic? or should I take it easy and take it as a rest? What do you think?

      25 days is a long time. I would definitely try and still do some stuff over that trip. Hopefully you can find a court and have a basketball with you. I would say it would be great to take a portion of that trip completely off, but still try and get some work in while you are away. Even doing some conditioning and strength stuff is better than nothing.

      I think a combination of both, but I would put an emphasis on training your skills. Improving your shot, handle and finishing is going to be more important so you can play better in live situations.

    Got cut from my freshman year of highschool ball, making a big risk by transferring schools to play ball. This other school is pretty bad, but I will be a starter there. Any advice?

      Have you already made the decision to transfer? If you got cut, then that is feedback telling you need to get in the gym and get better. Going to a worse school isn't going to change the fact that you have to improve.

      Do you think it is a confidence issue? If that is the case, I want you to try just going out there and be aggressive no matter what. Tryouts are a great time to do this because you only get that one chance to make the team, you can't wait until you are comfortable. So it shouldn't matter if you miss shots, turn the ball over, whatever. It would be better to fail than to not try!

    Hey tucker, I need advice, Im an eight grade boy about 5'8 who cant play aau due to my schedule and go to a small private school with a small team, how would i ever get scouted?

      You are still really young, so you shouldn't be worried about getting recruited right now. Instead, you should just focus on improving your skills. When the time does come, there are ways you can get on a coaches radar, like contacting them directly or sending film of you playing, so don't worry about it right now.

    Despite what he said, please do not start working out before puberty especially if your working out hard. And even if your 12-16 don't do any heavy lifts like deadlifts as if done incorrectly you can damage your self and going through puberty can make it worse.

    Hey if you had to guess, what percent of high schoolers really get D1 offers and what we’re you averaging when you play in high school

      There are about 525,000 boys playing basketball in high school, and about 350 D1 teams. If you assume there are about 3-4 spots per team that need to be filled every year, and about 25% of high school players are seniors, that's about 1% of high school players that will play D1 ball.

      Yeah that 1% number is about right. I averaged around 18 5 and 5 my senior year. Statistics really depend on the high school you go to though. You could average 30 but play at a really small school and not play division 1. Colleges who are recruiting high school kids care about the player, not necessarily their stats.

      Well, I know there are player's who still play pro in their 30s and even 40s. So I guess I would say, anything is possible?
