      Big Boss was clearly a villain, what with threatening the world with nukes and perpetual war and all. He even admits his villainy in MGS4.
      With all the marketing for MGSV saying we'd finally get to see Big Boss's fall from grace, its very disappointing that we missed out on it. There's no damage controlling that. Snake Eater have Big Boss depth, while Phantom Pain took that away with him going bad offscreen

    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 8 лет назад +15

      Matthew Williams
      "yet you ruin a otherwise fine comment with that attitude toward people whom believe a fall from grace arc would have been far more compelling."
      Never said that. I said the people waiting for it to happen are perplexing because there's been obvious evidence going back multiple games and quite a few years that Big Boss isn't the villain people have assumed him to be. They're waiting for a character arc that they based on faulty information given to you as the player that Kojima has hinted out won't happen because it's untrue for the better part of 2 major releases and almost a decade.

    You know come to think of it, Ground Zeroes was a lot darker than TPP, Paz' and Chico's torture, Here's To You as the main theme, the dark atmosphere of the game with rain pouring in Camp Omega, heck it was even the only gamr in MGS series not to include a Cardboard box..

    The incomplete story broke my heart. The hype was too real, man, too real...
    Its like there is more story in the trailers and in the fan theories than in the game itself. And in many aspects, the speculations and theory was way more interesting.
    -Quiet is not Chico
    -Big Boss never went full nuclear
    -no Grey Fox, Decoy Octopus, Sniper Wolf, Chico and other expected characters
    -barely any Boss AI, Paz and Strangelove
    -Skull face dies in the middle of the story, and then there is nothing as big to cary our interest
    -no progress in fighting cypher at all
    So many interesting possibilities that simply do not exist in the realm of the game...

    The game is obviously unfinished but the biggest problem are the missions. Every missions is go to a campsite either extract or kill someone or something thats it. only 4 missions broke this mold, the prologue which was the best mission and its completely linear, the quiet boss fight, quarantine mission and mech boss fight.

    • @Frandelicious1337
      @Frandelicious1337 8 лет назад +55

      +IamJacksColon4 But every metal gear game has the same mission objectives: retrieve something, rescue someone or kill someone. EVERY MGS game plays on variations on those. The important thing is that there are hundreads of ways you can go through a mission in these games, specialy MGS5.

      @TheEngiGuy 8 лет назад +68

      +IamJacksColon4 I don't think the problem is "there are same missions", but mainly lack of indoor infiltration and huge bases like in older MGS games. Most of the time in MGSV you are infiltrating small outposts, would have loved to see some missions that would take you in unique areas.

    • @aceotaku
      @aceotaku 8 лет назад +8

      +orange yeah but at least in those you could be more creative with your solutions, especially in MGS4 where not only did you have an arryay of weapons to go all gungo ho with but you could also be as stealthy as possible, and you got an array of cool extra stuff like the sun laser, different faces, and peace walker had a boss fight against a DRAGON,
      from the sounds of things, thsi game doens't even have good bosses like a good MGS game should. and that's just sad when you consider inventive, fun boss fights were a series staple.

    • @Frandelicious1337

      In those kinds of bonus, you are right. TPP barely has any costumes or wacky side ops/bosses at all. But in the core gameplay, its not lacking at all. Sure, the game is too easy by default, but I take into consideration that almost every hardcore MGS player plays with every hand held disabled (reflex mode, markers, and if you want to be REALLY hardcore, xray sensing).

  • @The4thSnake
    @The4thSnake 8 лет назад +268

    I'm willing to bet that Chapter 3 was going to be about Venom taking the Outer Heaven concept in his own direction, constructing TX-55 and going on all the adventures we're heard about like saving Sniper Wolf and bringing Gray Fox on board.
    Also, the reveal that Venom Snake is the Big Boss from MG1 and dies there feels like Kojima is just shitting all over this character who is suppsoed to give the message "You, the player, are Big Boss" and really prevents him from being his own character.

    • @shadowwhowalk

      +The4thSnake
      Gray Fox was a PoW in MG1 who was sent to investigate the nuclear weapon. But in MG2, he claimed that Big Boss saved him twice (he did when GF was a child, not sure if he counts Portable Ops as one). It would make more sense if Gray Fox is not involved with Venom Snake.
      Like wise, since Sniper Wolf was recruited in the FoxHound unit, Big Boss is likely Saladin since he trained her.
      So much wasted story telling...

      Problems with your inquiries.
      Sniper Wolf and Gray Fox are saved by the real Big Boss, not Venom.
      Also constructing the TX-55 is ordered by the real Big Boss to Venom, revealed at the end of the game in Chapter 2.
      Only reason Venom dies in MG1 is because Solid Snake proves to be a better soldier than him in the end. The events of MG1 were supposed to be a ruse expecting Solid Snake to fail.

    • @The4thSnake

      Xiu Greyson Because if they really wanted to cause phantom pain they would have done things like show off the Battle Gear in game and shown more cut content footage than the roughly one minute of cut footage the trailers showed off. But they didn't because they knew that if they showed off things like Battle Gear gameplay and said "Yes this will be in the game" and then cut it they'd be able to be sued for false advertising.
      Phantom pain or not the cut content is really just a symptom of Konami turning it's back on video games and wanting Phantom Pain on their quarterly profits instead of on their quarterly losses like it has been for the last 5 years.
      Kojima just got lucky that the game was about a topic dealing with the loss of something. Kojima is a perfectionist, unless he's planning some ruse that involves Chapter 3 being free DLC in the future. All the cut content is just him getting the shaft.

    Something else I just noticed about the medic/Venom Snake is that he wasnt randomly chosen.In fact he was one of the best(if not the best soldier)Snake had in his army(I heard that in one of the Truth cassete tapes).So that's why he was so skilled in cqc,combat and inflitration.By the way,do you remember after the end of the CQC training in Peace Walker the cut scene with an MSF recruit calling Snake ''Vic Boss''?Now watch the part where Venom looks the back of the photo.It says ''Good Luck....Vick Boss''.Venom could possibly be that recruit because he was the first one that called snake like that.People hated the ending because they didnt get the message Kojima left for us.Venom wasnt just a random guy who was used to create the twist.Venom represented US the PLAYERS in the game.In MGS3,PW and GZ we played as Big Boss/Jack but in TPP we WERE THE BIG BOSS because ''Big Boss'' is a title,a legacy and Kojima gave it to us.

    It's just not finished. Fantastic game despite some very lackluster storytelling and characterisation, but the biggest issue is that the thing just isn't finished. Chapter 2 ends up being an epilogue featuring the most abrupt and out-of-context ending ever. This is the gaming equivalent to the Evangelion TV series, and unfortunately it doesn't look like Konami will let us see Metal Gear's own End of Evangelion.

    Actually it would make for a real great story if after you discovered that Big Boss uses you for protection (cause he does) you rebell and go crazy, wanting to be different, or better yet, giving the llayer the choice of what path to choose, and then the horn grows and that explains why Big Boss was evil in the first one. It would make for a great Origin story and give a whole purpose for the twist, you would become a real character by making these choices your self and the real Big Boss would be kinda your villan. A new chapter could be totally dedicaded for somethin like that. As it is, it just feels like some cool symbolism, but it could have be so much more. I still like the game a lot.

    • @Evaquiel

      OR....The real Big Boss end up killing you in the last minute, making us feel a greater symphaty and connection with Venom and at the sime time kinda hate Big Boss, seeing how far he was willing to go by using people for his own war plans, he was suppose t become a villain. The only ones who really have a problem are the MGS vets. We didn't get "that story" we were all expecting as well as knowing there are a lot of missable scenes and, what seems like, a lot of content cut from the game. In time, those who say, "Phantom Pain is game of the decade", will hopefully realize what we vets know right now.

    You forgot to talk about how most of Sutherland's original lines were cut out of the game and the one's that were left in were mediocre at best. Sutherland sounds like he's asleep through a majority of this game. People like to shit on Hayter for being a cartoon character in Peace Walker but at least it's some kind of energetic performance.
    Also the "twist" is ruined within the first 5 minutes of the game for people with functioning brains.
    Make an avatar for no reason
    Ismael is also voiced by Sutherland
    "You're talking to yourself"
    That and the fact that they make an effort to show you close ups on Quiet's face during the beginning, making so anyone who's ever seen Quiet immediately knows who this person is and ruins that reveal to.

Assassin's Creed II, GTA V, Saints Row 3 and The Witcher 3 are excelent open-world games because they're not the first. Watch Dogs is perceived as a mediocre game because it was sold as what GTA took decades to be. With a world so empty of things to do outside of the missions, I wonder why Kojima didn't just do a complete, more linear game with less filler missions and tighter plot.

      if Konami and their bullshit doesn't get in the way, it would've been good. imagine that Konami would go so far as to cut out ending for Castlevania Lords of Shadow so that it would sell as DLC and make profit out of it? now, they did the same thing with this by cutting out MGS3 theme outfits and to be confirmed as first DLC pack.

    This game left me with some real cognitive dissonance. It plays great, even if it is more of a sandbox than a stealth game, and I invested a bit over a hundred hours into it before I beat Truth, completely unaware that it was the "final" mission. It was a blast the whole time; it was easy by stealth game standards and difficult by sandbox standards, but it was such a fun hybrid of the two that I never found myself caring and would often get lost in it for stretches at a time.
    However, I never came for the gameplay. I had cut myself off from the internet for a solid week to avoid spoilers, ever since the game first began leaking by whatever means, and for the approximate week and a half it took me to beat it afterward to remain in blackout, and I never regretted it. That is, until I did.
    Maybe I went in with unrealistic expectations. Between what we could infer would happen from both Metal Gear history and the trailers, all of the pieces were in place to be the Apocalypse Now of videogames, albeit with giant robots and teleporting nudists. But for so long I let myself believe that this was it. This was the final Metal Gear and it meant it was finally time to see Big Boss, who we knew both as a hero and a villain, undergo the events that would end the Metal Gear story by beginning it. To put it simply, I was ready to watch an old man suffer.
    The game's narrative is objectively unfinished, even if it technically does work in the grand scheme. There's obviously more beyond Mission 51 that we may never see, but exactly how much is completely indiscernible unless Kojima himself lays out the original vision. We've been playing these games for literal decades and were ready for almost anything, but what we got just hurts.
    I try not to do these stupid RUclips comment rants. I usually see people type a novel in a comment section and just think, "Wow, man. You have nothing to do with your free time, do you?" But maybe this is what those people are always feeling. Just really needing to get something off their back.
    tldr: How do you say you're unsatisfied with a game you had fun with for 100 hours? Jeez.

    I remember playing the hospital intro and the raw excitement surging through me due to the hype I had for the game, I never felt as happy....it was fucking Christmas again. Then I finished "Where the Bees Sleep" (episode 6 I think) and things started getting dull, the missions felt like filler with seemingly random contracts counting as main ops (Rescue the Intel agents etc. should have been side ops IMO, ala Ground Zeroes style side ops with individual cutscenes etc.)
    Still a 9/10 game for me though as frankly its gameplay is so well designed and the open ended approach to missions feels truly fresh each time I play....narratively.....well thats the part that leaves me feeling a phantom pain. I often wonder if Kojima named the game Phantom Pain when he realised it would turn out incomplete?
    Or was the incomplete nature his way of saying "Fuck the rabbit hole of canon I dug myself into, I'm gonna leave it incomplete to beat fans over the head with the notion that they need to move on"

      +Bestgameplayer10 You do have a point and I'm not saying these games have the most... let's see... "productive" stories, but what we get is sadly what we get. Pretty much every metal gear was supposed to be the last one but with constant revitalization of the story it got waaayyy too clusterfucked. The games are fun absolutely and the story (even though we can all agree it's somewhat messy) is something we really don't get too often in games, something that metal gear and Kojima just provides. It's something special and that's it. But no not everything is perfect sadly.

    • @koga743
      @koga743 8 лет назад +32

      +ew275x
      The true culprit, Hideo Kojima. Konami stopped funding Kojima because Kojima wasted a lot of money. An interview with Rika Muranaka, a musician who should be familiar to MGS fans, revealed that Kojima wasted money by hiring her to write 30-40 songs, only to reject them all. And it wasn't that he hired her once and then let her go, no, she revealed that he payed for 30-40 individual songs. Konami eventually told him to stop, because he was throwing money away at that point.

    • @ew275x
      @ew275x 8 лет назад +13

      Dekal So yes, the budget probably went overboard, but they didn't rush or cancel another project that went overboard, like Metal Gear Rising, which after 2 years in development had to be outsourced to Platinum, I'm pretty sure that cost more than writing 30-40 songs.
      Konami has had increased profits this year (www.gamasutra.com/view/news/250656/Konami_profits_up_by_159_as_mobile_games_gain_traction.php) so we can see that anything Kojima did, didn't put a dent in their business.
      Let's not forget that Konami had other 2 Fox Engine projects that were shut down, Silent Hills and Enders Project, which also had tech demos, concept art, and other such material produced for it. I'm pretty sure those cost more than 30-40 songs.
      So after cancelling half of his Fox engine projects and having to outsource the other, no shit Kojima wanted to finish one as best he could. Super Bunny Hop's anonoymous source stated that Silent Hills was cancelled abruptly, after a Casino bill started passing around again in Japanese law that Konami's CEO wanted to be approved.
      So Konami had already thrown away money like Kojima did by cancelling at least two projects and outsourcing a game to another company.
      So at that point, just let the perfectionist finish the game correctly instead of rushing it at consumers, not releasing it feature complete and with microtransactions and Horse Armor DLC. I mean Square Enix can deal with 10+ year development cycles and they are still profiting.
      Still, seeing as how Konami has been completely apathetic towards video games since 2012, as ProJared and Jim Sterling called them out, I guess they couldn't handle a little overspending by another person when they flushed money with the Fox Engine, Enders project, Silent Hills and having to change Metal Gear Rising.

    • @koga743
      @koga743 8 лет назад +23

      ew275x
      The main thing you're ignoring is that Kojima makes money differently from most game devs. He doesn't make anything off of game sales, meaning he only gets a salary. Konami was literally paying him to waste money, and the couldn't justify it with games sales, because he wouldn't see a cent of the game's sales. Everybody is so quick to hate Konami, that everything Kojima did wrong is somhow Konami's fault.

    • @ew275x
      @ew275x 8 лет назад +10

      Dekal I'm pretty sure most devs in japan make money like Kojima. The Pokemon staff had to cut their salaries in order to finish the game.
      Still, I actually see Konami apologists who are: "Kojima is a hack fraud who didn't deliver in 5 years, good for Konami to get rid of him because he was bankrupting them!"
      When again:
      - Kojima worked in at least 5 projects (7 if you count PT and GZ as their own projects) in the last 5 years. Lords of Shadow, MGR, MGSV, Silent Hills and the Enders Project.
      - Konami is not even close to bankrupting nor did TPP have an effect on their profits.
      - Konami has not given a single shit about video games, especially AAA video games since 2011/2012. Look at how they trated Blades of Time and Book of memories.
      So what did Kojima did wrong? Went over budget and overtime. Two very common thing in multi million projects like this. I also don't think Kojima spent that much over MGS 4, considering rising dev costs (10 million more and just 3 million if we adjust for inflation).
      So OK even if Kojima was a hack fraud incompetent idiot, Konami didn't have to succumb to the sunk costs fallacy and should've cancelled the project or should've monitored and taken charge of it it more so it didn't go over time and budget.

      I mean, at least DMC4 HAD a mostly "complete" story, that added new elements to the lore and felt enough part of the style (something the british reboot completely ignored...but they ignored the whole series after all, and made a DMC2 with less good gameplay or Ideas).
      this does not have any of that, but a secondary subplot that can be explained in 10 minutes and does not really add nothing to the series while also loosing much of the original "touch" of the series. MGSV cutscenes are pretty much on par with any modern VG if you ignore the quality of facial animations and the direction...and there aren't simply enough of them, clocking around a assassins creed game number of them (both MGSV and AC unity have 4 hours of cutscenes....)

    MGS 6: Outer Heaven
    We see the rivalry build between Big Boss and Venom Snake in the opening chapter of the game with various missions between the two, recruiting allies and attempting to sabotage the other (somehow hopefully resolving all that).
    They establish Outer Heaven in the image of MSF and DD, and this could lead to more missions where one or both Snakes intervene in one (or more) of the many conflicts happening in Africa during the late 80s/early 90s. We know that Solidus participated in the Liberian Civil War during this time, but that’s just an idea. This would be chapter 2.
    Then, something happens between Big Boss and Venom, causing BB to go back to Foxhound and lead Gray Fox and Solid Snake against Venom. Chapter 3 then becomes a remake of Metal Gear 1, clearly ending Venom’s arc, setting up BB as the villain, and being an origin story of sorts for Solid Snake. No open worlds, but open level design, especially for the Outer Heaven final chapter, preferably using the Fox Engine.
    This will never happen, but that’s what I would do.

    First of all while it is technically one of the most expensive games ever made it's still only #19. And while it was more expensive to develop than 4 (only 10 million more and only 1 year longer in development), its also been released on far more platforms than that game was. Then there's also the fact that engine development is where a large proportion of funds went; Kojima wanted the Fox Engine to be a long term thing that he and Konami could use for mutliple games going into the next-gen and which they could also license out to other Japanese devs.
    In that respect 5 years and $80 million is pretty modest when you compare it to other AAA games which have had similar dev times, bigger budgets, larger teams, aren't releasing on as many platforms and are also using 3rd party engines rather than creating their own. Compared to 4, it really feels like the development of 5 was a lot more focused and far less extravagant (remember the fake TV channel stuff at the start of that game? Wonder how much that added onto 4's budget). If you're asking what they were doing, well, I imagine a large part of that was just building the engine and making it ready for future licensing while also developing 5 as a showcase of what it could do. It just so happened that towards the end of things Konami and Kojima had their falling out.

    I’m pretty sure the “big feature” Kojima mentioned at 5:39 was the disarmament of all online nukes leading to the Nuclear Disarmament. He did say it could only be done through video games, that which is proving whether that large amount of people could strive for peace or not. I don’t understand how you thought that he was still referring to visiting Camp Omega, which btw, was his plan before GZ became a separate game. It’s obvious that those missions of “going back” to camp omega were the side missions implemented in ground zeroes.

    Sure, the game was incomplete and it might be Konami's fault but honestly that's not my biggest problem with this game. My biggest problem is that it isn't the game anyone wanted. We wanted to see the lovable Big Boss become a monster, to meet Cyborg Ninja, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven. To have a incredible boss fight with Solid Snake. But instead we get a game that didn't even plan to have any of this. You're not even Big Boss. Instead of the amazing plot we could have had instead we get vocal cord nanomachines, explanations for things nobody wanted to know an explanation and a stupid twist that doesn't add anything to the game. This was Kojima's last chance to make us get the game that finished the cycle, the game that was controversial and showed our hero becoming the villain, but time constraints and budget aside, to me it looks like he didn't even try to make that game.

    Nothing makes me sadder than series/games that end up being cut up. There's an occasional good unfinished games like Diddy Kong Racing. Still I blame this squarely on Konami, wouldn't be surprised if they also pitched the: "Make Metal Gear Open World."
    I would also say this is a problem of open world games, but it also happened to the linear DMC4. I do think the Multiplayer aspects were a waste of development power.
    I do hope Kojima continues trucking on. I do think he has appreciation for the game beyond us, because he knew the whole puzzle. Do hope he can tell us more in the future after all his Konami contracts and stuff is sorted out.

      ***** I don't know something tells me Konami will keep this one still incomplete due to their change in focus... and I would think such DLC would help the longevity and memorability of the game.
      Cosmetic DLC is pretty easy to create compared to new missions, getting the actors, and it wouldn't also surprise me that like in Mass Effect 3, Konami wants to focus on the multiplayer.

    • @ew275x

      Alex Jaegar I should clarify what I meant when blaming Konami. They changed directions around 2010, according to the recent Nikkei article, wanting to go in a cheaper more mobile direction.
      Project Enders, Metal Gear Rising, Silent Hills, and Metal Gear Solid V were games Kojima planned for the Fox Engine. So this tells me either he was the exception to Konami's new direction, he didn't know about it, Konami didn't tell him squat, or he didn't really care.
      Still, Kojima was just not working on MGS V, he was working on a portfalio of games for the Fox Engine since around 2010/11 since they announced ZoE HD for hyping the next installment.
      The famous Jimquisition breakdown of Konami came in 2012, and included various fuck ups and lack of care that Konami showed since 2011. Soon after their change in direction.
      So yeah Konami had 4/5 years to tell Kojima to scale down the game, tell him the new direction of the company, control the budget of the game, since it was pretty much their only large budget title. Instead it seems Kojima played hooky and Konami didn't bother checking the costs until it was too much for them. Even then, the costs of MGS 5 weren't that exorbitant compared to MGS 4.
      I mean how and how long did they expect Kojima to take with the game? 4 years? 3 years? Not even Rockstar can make an open world title that quickly.
      Plus the sudden cancellation and retooling of the other Fox Engine projects also seemed to sudden, I mean PT is only a year long. Something tells me that Konami and Kojima had a falling out. Over what, we don't know.
      Still, Kojima didn't just dick around with MGS V for 5 years, he was working in at least 3 other projects.

    We wanted to see the tragedy of Big Boss-- him turning into the monster of Metal Gear 2, thus setting up the feud between himself, Solid Snake, and the rest of the world. Didn't happen.
    We also wanted (so badly) to have an amazing boss fight with Solid Snake, but that didn't happen either. Imagine how cool that sequence would've been-- it could've been an epilogue chapter, mirroring the final scene in MGS4 when Old Snake fights Big Boss in the graveyard.
    But no. And no Vulcan Raven, Sniper Wolf, or Decoy Octopus either. Instead of getting what we so, so wanted, we get explanations for things we never wanted to know-- okay, so parasites are what made Zero braindead by the end of MGS4. Huh-- having flashbacks to the use of "nanomachines" from MGS4, here (and really, MGS4 already did the job of tying up lots of loose threads and explaining junk. MGS5 should've focused on wild ideas and fan service.) But at least we got a young Psycho Mantis, if that's really him. Putting Mantis into the game is an example of the kind of fan service we wanted, Kojima. And you know what? The scenes with Mantis are easily among the coolest parts of the game.
    Kojima (I guess) is a man with a vision, which is bad news for anyone (Konami) funding him. What was it they wound up giving him-- like, $80 million? What'd Kojima do with all that cash? It couldn't've all been Sutherland's salary, or re-re-re-shooting the motion capture scenes.
    I imagine a lot of that monumental budget went into developing the Fox Engine, but why not just use Unreal 4? There's no scene or environment in MGS5 as inventive or atmospheric as Shadow Moses's snow effects of Act 4 in MGS4. Seriously: MGS5's Afghanistan is just a series of roads and corridors with huge mountains you can't climb making up its walls. And where are all the towns/people of Afghanistan? The country feels completely lifeless. The Fox Engine is no better than any current engine, and as Silent Hills is tragically cancelled, we probably won't be seeing much more of it in action. Perhaps if Konami hadn't gotten fed up with Kojima's spending they would've seen great sales for Silent Hills, but that's all dead now. While I can see why they finally (five years of waiting and 80 mill, Jesus Christ) cut Kojima's funding, shame on Konami for giving Kojima so much cash without monitoring him.
    You can theorize that Kojima was purposely self-sabotaging himself. Again and again, with every MG release since MGS2, he's stated that he wants to move on from the MG universe, and initially he announced that he'd only be a producer for MGS4, letting someone else direct it. Had Kojima not received death threats targeting both him and his family from frightening basement dweller fans, maybe MGS4's story would not've been the incomprehensible mess that it is. Seriously: the dip in quality from MGS3's fun story to MGS4's would've ended most anyone's career-- but there's a great game buried beneath it, with fantastic stealth, so maybe that's what saved him and the series.
    But really: after MGS5, don't *you* want to see a different developer/director take on the series?
    But I'll say this in MGS5's favour: we had fun waiting, didn't we? Half of the fun of any Metal Gear game is actually *waiting* for it to release. In the five years since MGS:PW we've had the most wild and engaging fan theories, my favourite being the "Quiet is secretly Chico" idea. You can find whole articles and youtube vids of people backing this wild claim up, and you know what? It's different, controversial, and shocking-- everything Kojima promised us MGS5 would be (and isn't.) Making Quiet secretly Chico which would've justified Kojima's twitter post saying how her outfit/shower scenes/butt waving on the chopper were part of something that would've made us reel on calling him out as exploitative. But in the end, it was just exploitation, and that mindset reflects part of why Konami is focusing on pachinko machines for the future.

      Why is it impossible for people to criticize the game without demanding stupid fan service that obviously never would have been in the game to begin with. It's Konami's fault by to giving Kojima a black check.
    It's Kojima's fault for wasting 5 years of development and 80 millions on a engine that is pretty much useless.
    Again, Konami's fault for not keeping an eye on Kojima and let him blow that much money up.
    Still, the gameplay is great, the execution is not that great.
    Afghanistan is a set of corridors full of mountains and high parts you can't climb.
    Angola is actually the only part I would consider "Open World" still, it's pretty devoid of life.
    But again, the gunplay is fantastic, the stealth is refined (Although easy, mods can still fix that and did), the movements are great.
    MGSV is good, but not great but definitely NOT an MGS title.

      +EnterpriseKnight You're right on the money, but in my opinion, what this game lacks as a mgs title, it more than makes up for on its own. Unlike all the other mgs games, I actually had fun while playing this game because the gameplay is so streamlined and not stilted. Like what the fuck was that stamina meter in 3 and 4. As for the story, I never did like the mgs stories too much, felt too contrived for my tastes, but even on its own, this game's story doesn't hold a candle to even games released this year.
      Also, I can't help but point out a simple little factoid about the Kojima bit. Sure, the engine can't really be marketed for other developers as it was made just for kojima and friends, but you must not forget that the engine would still be used for other games made by him, the obvious one being PT/Silent Hills. If you look at the budget and time as a split between the engine and game, then it seems far more reasonable. Unfortunately, Konami needed instant gratification and couldn't wait some more to see the revenue come in for MGS V and Silent Hills, so it axed both games and got only the revenue from V. Silent Hills would have sold at least a million copies, if the PT psn numbers are anything to go by, so they did miss out on quite the bit of money there, especially if they made it multiplatform.

    • @MaxiusTheGod
      @MaxiusTheGod 8 лет назад +21

      +HyperBitHero for a AAA open world game that's one of the lowest budgets I've ever seen. AAA open world games are somewhere between 100-200 million. More linear AAA games with good budgeting can get away with far less. 30-100 million depending on the project. Below those budgets you've dropped out of triple A game budgets and into more niche games with a "mid sized budget" like pillars of eternity usually 5-30 million. And obviously indies drop even further below. That isn't including marketing budgets for any of these games. That's just development.
      This all in USD if that wasn't clear. These may seem massive but remember that this industry is bigger than the movie industry now. GTA 5's development alone was $265 million USD

    • @HyperBitHero
      @HyperBitHero  8 лет назад +87

      +deadeyemax Nah, it's like in the top 20 most expensive games ever. Just because it doesn't reach GTAV's budget or some of their other open world games doesn't mean it isn't extremely expensive.The Witcher 3 was $81 million. Watch_Dogs was 68 million. LA Noire was 50 million. For a game about running around in an 2 empty levels with tons of cut content and features, that isn't unbelievable. You are exaggerating how little the budget is. It's small compared to a lot of movies, but in terms of video games, it's far up there, and was in development for many years.

    • @MaxiusTheGod
      @MaxiusTheGod 8 лет назад +16

      +HyperBitHero Witcher 3 and LA Noire both had the benefit of being developed in Poland and Australia respectively. Their development costs were far lower than if they were in Japan or the US. Watch_Dogs had development split between 3 different studios to pump it out as fast and cheaply as possible and still it suffered for its lower budget.

Kojima had such an ambitious vision, that wasn't able to be completely carried out due to the price needed to be able to achieve everything he wanted, and still, with a compromised version of what Kojima wanted it's still amazing. Many of the artistic aspects and game design are just too brilliant to ignore, and I'm sure that without the falling out with Konami, this could've easily been a much greater land mark--in this constantly growing medium than--it already is.

Also, this game had similarities in theme to the novel Moby Dick. Interestingly enough, Moby Dick's first edition was missing it's epilogue. Maybe this was intended, maybe not. In a perfect world, Konami would scrounge up the remaining cut content and finish it for us. MGSV had the potential to be one of the greatest games of all time, and now that's a pipe dream.

I think the fact that the wait for it was so long and all the trailers built up hype like you wouldn't believe made it so that, in the end I was never going to be as satisfied as I wanted to be. But still, it's so clearly unfinished that anyone who says otherwise is just wrong. Leaving plot threads wide open? Having content from the launch trailer of the game absent at launch?
