Maomao loves to drink alcohol. She's lived in the pleasure district all her life with regular access to the stuff and developed a very high tolerance as a result. Despite her size she can down a several jugs. She is well aware of her limits too.
Her poison resistance also meas she can hold a lot of liqor. Where are some hilarious scenes in the LN because of it.
That basically confirmes that she likes every substance that can be harmful for you in some way,the underground and lethal ones to the socially accepted ones.
A lot of poisons in small doses have intoxicating effect. Alcohol is a poison as well.
Everything, in excess, is poison.
Kounen lost his taste for salt and have a craving for sweet things. I'm tempted to say he either has Addison's disease or diabetes. The salt and the alcohol dehydrated him to the point that his blood pressure skyrocketed and he died of heart failure.
Haven't watched the episode yet, but those are my thoughts as well, watching this clip.

He lost his ability to taste salt after getting depressed. Someone added salt to his drink and because he couldnt taste it he didnt notice and essentially died of too much salt in his body. Not sure what addisons is (i never heard of it before) but it definantly wasnt diabetes

@@jismeraiverhoeven yeah, within the reality of the story the illness was clearly psychosomatic. when he became depressed, sugary foods became more desirable, not due to his taste changing or some other illness, but due to the physiological effects of consuming sugar. all foods cause you to release dopamine, but sugary and fatty foods yield the most. since his sense of taste was dulled, the only explanation is that he became addicted to sugar. between the inebriation, depression, and potential damage done to his palate/tongue over years of eating spicey foods and drinking heavily, he probably *could* tell the drinks were salty, but wasn't able to recognize *how* salty they were. no underlying illness needed.
Mao Mao loves drinking alcohol because it's basically a way to drink poison without seeming crazy.

Aside from Maomao's predilection for consuming harmful substances, between all the mysteries and palace conspiracies she's been strong armed into dealing with I'd say she's got more than enough of an excuse to knock one back.

In the latest light novel she experienced hangover for the first time cuz she ate a mushroom along with wine (caused the alcohol to be absorbed faster). Jinshi found out and was furious lol.
The one complaint I have about this show is that basically everything they say is based on modern science.
That's why you never read about famous Dr's in your history books their credibility is F'd.
Well... it's a tricky thing for a writer. You don't want to spread medical misinformation, even if that misinformation used to be what people genuinely believed. Good news is, this anime is set in a fictional world. Maybe this world's early physicians were a lot better at guessing than ours were.
Also, I can think of a bunch of famous physicians from history. Galen. Maimonides. Averroes. John Dee. Just because they were wrong or guessing doesn't mean they've been forgotten.
I haven't watched the show but everything she said about alcohol was more or less common knowledge in imperial china. Confuscianism stresses restraint and moderation and Chinese doctors well knew the effects of overindulging in alcohol.
Also if you took any history course and have never heard of Galen the Mystic then I weep for the state of your education, pretty sure I first heard about Galen in 5th grade.

He likes sweet and can’t taste salt anymore. Knowing this, someone dropped a ton of salt into his drink to the point he gets a salt “overdose”

Definitely! But let me tell you that it is one of the longest novel I've read and not finished yet. It's also a slow burn I would say
@@passionprey1293 14 volumes is not that long by novel standards, though, it is still ongoing. And for me personally it is a really good read. Cannot wait for the next volume to be translated in January.
