Guess he wasn't a very good officel.
I guess the official was like, "Alright, bet." and wanted to make sure it was poison, I guess.
After all, she could just be bluffing (even though we know that if she calls it out, it is most likely for real).
If’s because of Maomao’s exciteness that made him doubt lol.
Let’s be fair, who has Maomao’s reaction to being poisoned? None of them. The doubt was probably warranted.
Always gotta be somebody that micromanages the help and refuses to trust that they're doing their jobs right.
Maomao is like that one person who loves eating the hottest peppers they can find. If they make chili they have to make two pots because the one they make for themselves is so spicy nobody else can eat it.
That's my mother in a nutshell, execpt she makes something normal then dumps ghost pepper powder (or worse) on her portion instead of making two batches. Meanwhile, jalapenos are the hottest thing I can handle. I've got some funny stories related to her obsene spice tolerance if anyone's interested.
and me the absolute opposite, lol. My tastes are so sensitive that I don't even have ketchup with my fries... or if I do its the tiniest dip because that's all I really need, lol. It's a boon and a curse though. At restaurants its hit and miss. What taste great to others is overwhelming to me and what taste bland to others is a mouthful of flavor. My youngest brother is like that though. Guy carries around Tabasco and Siracha sauce when we are going out!
lol this comment reminds me of my mom. this was her entire thing, two different pots of food because one was just straightup lava and the other was mild. Until the day she accidentally mixed them up

Have never heard of this series before today. The art style is just next level! Divinely beautiful even. It reminds me of the vibrant, fluid colors of the glory days of the early-mid 90s.
This show is so good. It might just be this season's best anime.
In my opinion it just is. Visually stunning, great main character, great story, what’s not to like?

Half of the animation budget go to the poison taste
The other half went to animating flowers in the OP.
I mean, the animation isn't flashy but it's overall pretty consistent which is good for this type of anime.

@CyberLance26 no I didn't say anything about enjoying poison. Im talking about how unbothered she is towards men and doesn't try to act girly/too feminine like most other female protags.
Intp is an MBTI type, also known as 'personality type'
im still confused on why the lady smiled and why the concubine is taste testing for the emperor (or was this non poisoned food they were being served)? Especially when she has her own taste tester.
There are 4 concubine consorts, who are princesses btw from different clans, so all of them prestigious and one of them will likely marry the emperor, so they’re super important. Each concubine has their own food taster before they eat the food themselves. (No consorts means no heirs). Lady Lishu is the one in pink who was scared to eat the fish- it’s at first assumed she just doesn’t like fish and is snobby. Her own food taster is her lady in waiting and is trying to force her/punish her for being a picky eater by being forced to eat what she doesn’t want to in front of the emperor and her smirk/ coy smile def implied the food tester purposefully switched the dishes. It’s revealed later that Lady Lishu has a fish allergy which is why she’s a picky eater

also that soup Maomao said that was poisoned was also swapped by the lady in waiting , unintentionally saving Lishu from being poisoned.

The first lady who concubine food she was tasting? Or she was tasting the food of the emperor?
She’s tasting the concubine’s food, everyone gets the same dish but they are served separately, so everyone needs their own individual poison testers.
The reason she remarked on the emperor’s taste is because she found it surprising that the fish (the emperor’s favourite) was swapped out for jellyfish.
Then she realised that it’s only her concubine who got served the special dish. The reason is that another concubine can’t eat fish because of an allergies, and her dish was specially prepared and different from everyone else’s. But her poison taster thought her mistress was a picky eater, and swapped the two concubine’s dishes to bully her by forcing her to eat fish.
Which means the poison was also meant for that other concubine, the poison tester accidentally saved herself and her mistress by trying to bully her
I assume you're talking about the nervous lady that chugs it in one go, sitting right of Maomao. If that's the case, then yes, she's the Emperor's food taster. Maomao is sitting between her and Lishu's food taster.

I don’t deny the minister was certainly an idiot. But at the same time, I’d assume that no one expects the taste tester to actually identify the poison. Usually they just collapse and start foaming at the mouth. And like they pointed out, Maomao did swallow it despite saying it’s poison

I never thought I would fall in love with palace court dramas, especially 2 of them in the same year, but then this and Raven of the Inner Palace happened and I was so wrapped up in their stories and cast.
Considering you liked this one, I will try the other one, as i actually LIKE Palace Intrigues, as long as they aren't TOO cliché. Thank you for mentioning this, will try to return here to give my opinion on the other because i fricking love this one, tho the characters have alot to do with it too, obviously.

Very light on the body horror aspect, and despite that, it's entrancing to sit through.

Nice detail, but her full reaction came later and was great. Maomao even put it in a way that didn't directly accuse her, but also made her feel the weight of a tombstone she might have been under.

@@josh0156She knows her lady is allergic, and she doesn't like her lady so she bullies her because she's young. She gets reprimanded and warned for this later on
She was passive aggressively bullying her: not clear if she knew about the allergy or not, but if nothing else she was trying to humiliate her.
General consensus is that she knew she was allergic and was bullying her because she couldn't refuse to eat it in front of the emperor. But they had no way to prove it, so they instead pretended that she just thought she was being picky, informed her that yes, she really is allergic, and feeding her that stuff was equivalent to poisoning her, and gave her some boards with instructions how to deal with it in the future. Next time it happens, they know she knows, and will be punished accordingly.
