This entire scene was my favorite part of this episode; Maomao being completely unaware of Jinshi's jealousy and his reactions to Maomao "granting [Lihaku] a night of blissful dreams." The chibi one is priceless (2:38). Binged every episode so far and I can definitely recommend it. Nice visuals and animation, love its traditional Chinese soundtrack and I even found the story to be quite interesting so far.

It’s funny because her inside thoughts show that she really doesn’t understand what the problem is and she doesn’t find what she’s saying wrong in any way. She doesn’t get the subtlety in all the gestures and words. She doesn’t try to purposely get him jealous or try to act naive on purpose. She also doesn’t act like those stupid naive protagonists. She seems 100% logical in her wording and thoughts that you basically get brainwashed by her words and think there’s nothing wrong with what she said. It’s too hilarious. I find myself laughing every time.
Just wait until you meet her birth father. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree but she looks like a genius relationship guru next to him. (But he's into war strategy like she's into poison and medicine, so...)

I think part of why he was pouting here, may have to do with the fact that he gave The hairpin not only as an expression of affection, but also a genuine expression of regret for maomao's situation. He very likely wanted Maomao to go see her family in order to make her feel better, or let her family know she's okay or both. The fact that she went on a homecoming isn't what surprises and shocks him the fact that she went with somebody besides him is.
What I love about this scene and afterwards is Lady Gyokuyou's laugh. She is truly enjoying the normally smug Jinshi that has her attendants fawning over him getting riled up by a delicious misunderstanding. And her laughter and expressions are so charming.
He thinks she hooked up with Lihaku as thanks for helping her get back to her side of town, and she didn't explain until afterwards that she simply gave him a referral to one of her sisters, who is a high class preformer and Preformer, so she technically wasn't wrong when she said it was a night he didn't forget

How many others lost a lung to this part of the episodes. Everyone under Gyokuyo are aware Maomao is blissfully ignorant to the meaning of the hairpins. At least anime wise I don’t think we’ve been told what they are given we are in her perspective. However Jinshi is unaware of this and the misunderstandings are great.
I can't believe you actually described her voice as boyish and unfeminine! It is neither of those things. She doesn't have the helium pitched voice that other anime female protagonists have, but that hardly makes her sound less like a girl.
It's even worse now that I'm rewatching this scene 😂 When she says "is he upset that I didn't rely on him?" her first thought is logical, no need for unnecessary trouble. Immediately she says "I couldn't think of a suitable repayment", what she meant is she thought of the whole thing as an exchange, a repayment for the trouble she would cause and given Jinshi's personality she didn't want to be indebted to him.
