This and the bit where Jinshi is jealous after she comes back from having Lihaku take her on a trip out of the rear palace are probably my favorite examples of it. Maomao, Frieren, and Fern are 3 of my favorite female anime characters in a LONG time.

Probably because this kind of misunderstanding has happened so many times that Gaoshun already sees it coming. Also, he's not as personally invested as Jinshi is so he can easily maintain an outsider's viewpoint on it all.
If you look closely, his face shows more and more quiet exasperation from the beginning to the end of this scene
Honestly, I just imagine he is internally repeating the same line over and over again: "OH MY GOD! Would you two please, just talk straight to one another, get in bed together or both!!! I just want to hold my Grand Daughter already..."

It's the coincidence 😂 this is the second time maomao is caught "out of base" with the same guy. The first misunderstanding with the hairpin thinking she "entertained" Lihaku herself 😂😅 and now this!!!! And considering the death stares she gives poor Jinshi, he should fear loosing her to someone else 😊
Can't wait for next year's new season. Still, it'll be a long wait to see in animation the best parts that are yet to come.

Props to Jinshi for not mocking Lihaku's dream and actually being supportive. And props to Lihaku for being ready to defend Pairin's honor and for wanting to achieve his goal through honest means.
Also, I think that by offering to buy Pairin's freedom, Jinshi was testing Lihaku as to find out what kind of man he's dealing with. When Lihaku politely rejected his offer and stated that he wanted to prove himself worthy of Pairin through hard, honest work, Jinshi seemed relieved, as he now knows Lihaku is a trustworthy and good man.
Well, if Lihaku gets together with Pairin, Jinshi gets MaoMao to himself, after all...
Did we watch the same episode? Its been a week I think, but if I remember rightly Jinshi seemed surprised by the rejection. But yeah all the rest of that seems accurate
Jinshi respected Lihaku's wish to buy Pairin through honest means, but that doesn't mean it was meant to be a test. I just think he is obsessed with Maomao and wanted Lihaku to be with Pairin so he wouldn't compete for Maomao's affection.
He knows what its like to chase a girl bro.
He's supportive of him... But it's more of a selfish reason, limit the male interaction other, than himself, MaoMao has around the palace

You know, for someone as perceptive as Maomao, she is absurdly clueless about Jinshi’s feelings
She thinks he’s a eunuch and based on her own emotional trauma she won’t even consider the possibility of romantic interest with/from anyone concerning herself.
Both of them are constantly analyzing and weighing the words and actions of others around them and it backfires when it's just the two of them talking
They actually "know" Mao suspects but she prefeers to be in "denial" because admiting it will only bring bothersome stuff.
While not being as an epic character as maomao I relate to her so much. We are not really into gaining a man's attention and are very focused on our interests and hobbies, when she eventually does really notice and decide that there's more to the world that geeking the hell out of her hobbies. She will decide to entretain Jinshi

@@yukidecim9921 It hadn’t occurred to me, but thinking about it now, her background’s shaped her that way twice over. Her medical training, like TheAzureGhost said, and growing up in a brothel. (That’s on top of how she may very well just be innately aroace, or something very close. The only time we’ve seen anyone even make her blush was Jinshi’s indirect kiss in episode 12.)

What makes it all the funnier is Jinshi's final "huh?" as he finally realizes he (once again) jumped to conclusions and misunderstood the whole thing.

I love how she's not dense, she's just off the marks. She was able to correctly deduced that Jinshi was jealous of Lihaku, but she guessed the wrong reason for it. And it completely makes sense that she would think this way, given how she intentionally made herself unattractive, plus the fact that she does not possess the assets that most men would find attractive. So her inability to perceive his feelings for her doesn't come across as contrive or farcical.
Also, the part of "I'm of lowly birth and I certainly do not bear the education or physical fruits most women in the palace do. So, there is no way I am being wanted or seen in that way."

Maomao maybe brilliant in everything else, but when it comes to personal matters of her heart, she is unquestionably the DENSEST girl in the palace, drawing the absolutely WRONG conclusions. Her obliviousness to Jinshi’s obvious feelings is absurdly hilarious, and yet makes her so endearing in her naïveté.

I have a lot of favorites episode:
- -when Jinshi summons all the washerwomen and writes that the one with freckles stays.
-the tea party. When Maomao receives multiple hairpin
- when Maomao returns from three days home thanks to Lihaku and Jinshi cannot contain his jealousy
-the indirect kiss
-the walk with Jinshi, I mean, Jinka disguised as a servant and Maomao as the daughter of a wealthy man
-when Maomao saves Jinshi at Temple.
You listed all my favorites. I especially love their first meeting and your first bullet point. The way he identifies MaoMao’s talents was so clever and that’s what made me hooked on this series, as no other romance series has an initial interaction as unique as this one
Those are all top tier. But by multiple hairpins, do you mean each scene upon receiving them or, flashing them at Lihaku to further convince him to take her out and serve as her guarantee?

The more that I watch Maomao and Jinshi's interactions, the more I love this show. Maomao cracks me up because she can be so blunt, but she doesn't have any ill intent when she addresses something, she is just being herself. He is so jealous of her relationship with Lihaku, it just keeps the show interesting. I love Maomao!
This is good motivation for my Japanese studies, because I know just enough to get the sense this is even funnier in the Japanese - I can hear Maomao’s “konomi” (“liking; taste; fancy; fondness” or “wish; desire; choice; preference”, with the same kanji as “suki”), and judging from how Japanese so often relies on context to infer things like a sentence subject, I’m pretty sure she’s saying “to know if [no identifier] would like his body”. And failing to realize that with his limited context, the natural interpretation would be “if I would”.
…If Japanese naturally lends itself to misunderstanding-based humor, I wonder what kind of humor English is suited to.
It only took episode 1 to turn this into my all time favorite anime. I’ve watched every episode 4 times at least. So good! 🥰🥰🥰

I thoroughly enjoyed how this scene played out. I’m still on the fence about whether Maomao intentionally described the situation in a way that irritated Jinshi or if she wasn’t even thinking about that. If it’s the latter, then it’s even funnier.

Context: He military dude is interested in her sister and she was appraising him before giving an opinion on whether he would fit her. Since Jinshi is officially known to be eunuch, she thinks, that her sister wouldn't be interested either way so she said its pointless to appraise his body.
Don't worry Jinshi, if it makes you feel better Maomao have a good impression about your body but you belongs in other category 😁
