At the end of the episode, I feel like Jinshi is mad at three things; the first, Maomao got hurt, the second, whoever hurt Maomao and third, whoever almost got him assassinated
And he’s mostly upset at that third point because Maomao was hurt even more.
In that order.
@@MocitaYeah. And probably at himself to be honest. He put Maomao in this mess, and if he had given her higher status, she would have been able to get through.
@@zoraackerman1684 He tried. This was the entire reason he pushed her to take the court lady test. She’s the one who didn’t try with the test.
@@coltonwilliams4153 I know that. Doesn't stop him from blaming himself I'm sure.
Crazy how Jinshi teasing her with the Ox Bezoar as a reward to investigate the connected “accidents” ended up saving his life
It was series of coincidences that ended up saving his life.
Lihaku mentioning it, Maomao for sharing it even tho she didn't had to and jinshi for motivating her.

I almost cried watching this and I don't even watch the anime.
Listen.....she didnt even know who the high ranked person was...and she still risked it all to save that person!!just maomao and her nobility!!
And that scene where Jinshi carries her has revealed who he is. I wander how many ppl figured it out. Clue is in episode 4. :)
She really was going for the Confucian principles... very location/time appropriate.
the fact that they are all bowing to him as he walks with MaoMao@@Rabestern
@@Annie1962 That too but biggest hint is on his clothes. He has golden dragon depicted on it. Same as certain person in episode 4. :)
@@RabesternI figured out who he was in the first episode.
A new pretty boy in charge of watching over the Emperor’s women? Who has the authority to do a lot of things most others can’t, and has an aide by his side almost at all times? Come on. He HAD to be the prince, he was too suspicious not be, and I was right.
I really like how they "roughed up" Maomao. It's not often we see a female character injured to a point it alters her appearance. Most people are too scared to do that to their characters, so I am very glad it wasn't the case here. I think this can be same to male characters as well, but its more rare for female characters.
I agree. This series has consistently been good about being realistic with the challenges Maomao faces. I respect immensely that when "she's just a servant, there's only so much she can do" was put to the test, the consequences were made real and visceral for the audience.
That's what makes this show all the more immersive for me personally. The wounds on her arm, the drowned corpse or the very sick lady Lihua, it's amazing really!
Yeah, so tired in animes of the single cut in the cheek.
Yea, it is unusual. I think the A Certain Magical series tended to be quite good with it, and Made in Abyss on occasion as well. But beyond those two I can't think of too many more at the top of my head.
Shonen anime: I've lost 30 gallons of blood, but I still look fine and am fighting harder than ever, SCREEEEEEAM...
This: hit with a mace so hard, she thinks she might pass out.
Very well done! I'd not thought about those details before, but you are totally correct.
I am low-key interested in what her arm actually looks like.
The guard that struck her sure is screwed.
Publicly accused of wanting a noble dead by preventing someone trying to save him from entering.
Striking her in front of high ranking officials including her biological father.
The noble in question also being in love with the woman he struck.
And the threat on the noble's life being extremely real.
I think even with the best legal defense possible he's gonna lose his head, and several times over if it was possible.
His whole family/clan should be hoping they just need to pack up to another continent
Just two of them would be known when it comes to punish this guy, for the sake of discretion. Just by his neglection that could have caused that death he will be severily punished, but after hitting the person who came to prevent that and giving weight to her suspicions by doing so, and to put the nail in the coffin, she did save that said noble with those injuries he gave.
So yes, he's very much screwed.
Yup unfortunately even the best lawyer money could buy won't save him of his fate.
He became a collaborator by pure accident
Legal defense? There’s no such thing as legal defense in the imperial palace. He’s gonna be a paste on the dungeon floor at that point.
defense would have no problem defending him in court of law. But in that times law doesnt really matter...
Guard: *hurts Maomao*
Everyone: “So you have chosen death.”
To be fair, the guard didn't know who Maomao was other than a servant judging from her dress. Using a giant metal cricket bat on the cat is too excessive though.
@@banninghammahitting women at the bosses 304 house isn’t a good idea.
Someone knows what's going to happen next. I can't wait until next Saturday
The LOOK that Lakan gave that guard gave me chills. Now we know who Maomao got her Ultimate Death Stare from. I love that the anime played both scenes so similarly--the total silence and two-frame shot of Maomao's face when Jinshi said Lakan's name, and the very brief cut of Lakan's version of that expression staring at the guard while he calmly said that the girl was hurt. The two of them certainly have oddities in their emotional affect, but there is NO QUESTION that they're both the kind of people who get calmer and colder the angrier they are. For Maomao, slapping Consort Lihua's maid, dragging her by the hair, and dumping the toxic powder on her was about a 4 or 5 out of 10 on the rage scale; hearing Lakan's name launched the meter all the way up. We haven't seen Lakan's halfway point, but I think it's safe to say that watching some scrub smash Maomao in the face with a club probably hit the top of end of his scale.
That guard ABSOLUTELY shat himself when they heard the sound of the iron curtains falling.
"Who hit my wife and troublesome cat girl ? Whoever it is losing their damn head!"
Jinshi
The soldier's fate was not shown, but he literally beat the girl of the emperor's son and daughter of the most renowned military strategist and in front of him.
Better. They're losing their manhood.
@@rafaelribeiro5771 While it's a common theory at this point in the anime I'd wager that quite a few people don't appreciate randomly getting information like that spoiled for them. At least edit a spoiler warning into your comment.
@@Jumper1155 So for those who watch the anime, you already know these issues that I addressed, Jishin's mother and father are revealed in the first part of the anime and Lakan has already said that he is her father, so there is nothing new.
@@rafaelribeiro5771 There are theories on who are Jinshies parents at this point, specifically his mother. Mao Mao disregarded her theory though and since then we have heard nothing regarding that topic.
We never received concrete things. I already knew what you said, which is why I don't care, but there are many people that don't know for sure yet and tomorrow this video will have 10 times the views. It would take you nothing but half a minute to write "spoilers below" and add a couple empty lines.
I like in this scenario how Jinshi is the damsel in distress without him knowing, and Maomao is the hero to save him.
And I like how it's actually portrayed in an actual realistic manner, so to speak. If it were in the West, she'd tank the hit she got in the face, take down all the bodyguards in full armor who are twice her size, then go in and probably lift up Jinshi like a feather after slide dashing and throw him out of harms way without getting a single scratch on her.
Whether anyone finds my comment annoying or disagree, you know it's the truth. I don't mind a woman saving a man, not at all, just make it somewhat plausible. I love the way it was one here, and one of the many reasons why I love this series. Maomao is an incredibly well written character that most people in the West just can't do. Some can, but most can't.
@@ULTRADJ4EVER I get what you mean also since this isn't an action type of series, where characters are have powers and/or superhuman physicality. lol

I’m sorry, I know this is an emotional moment.
But I can’t get over Maomao’s reaction to her potentially getting an ox bezoar.
She got herself brutally injured and still had to ask about it as her priority.
Hello! It’s a shock!! Do you know?!
@@raec5426possibly, she did that as a way to distract herself from the fact that "the person of most noble birth" that she saved was Jinshi(as she has done a lot of times before, whenever her speculations went in that direction), and to distract him from the fact that he almost died, and she is in the state like that before him. And, well, because she really wants her that bezoar

If you pay attention to the sound - when Maomao looses consciousness and Jinshin is talking - there's even echo that comes from this big ceremony hall. What a detailed anime it is. Stunning.
This episode was superb. Maomao being struck was good writing, although none of us want her to be hurt, it underscores her prior conversation with Jinshi, and I’m sure it hardens his resolve towards her. Also, she legit saved his life. She should be elevated.
What previous conversatiom? I didn't quite get that, could you explain? Yes, I have watched it.
@@zoraackerman1684 Before Jinshi used the ox bezoar to motivate her he asked if she was curious, and she replied "I am a lowly servant girl, who does what she is told." There is an ongoing theme of Maomao having to remind Jinshi of the limitations she's working within due to her status and him not quite getting it.
@@piperanderson5119 Yeah, that exactly what I was just saying!!! So that's what you meant. Maomao can only do so much with her rank, and it's painful because she pushes herself so much, way beyond that limit anyways. She might as well get some protection and maybe a little compensation for all her work. I guess if she had passed the court lady exams, she would have some standing, but honestly, knowing that it didn't work out, isn't there an easier way for Jinshi to lift Maomao? Clothing seems to matter a lot in showing status, so he could just say wear the hair pin I gave you wherever you go or something. I doubt the guard would have been so rude to her if she had it on. It works like a badge in a way, saying she has the backing of someone imporatnt. People will definitely mess with her less if that happens.
@@zoraackerman1684 the limitations Maomao works within are what shows her intelligence and what engages us the audience. The theme, which the conversation, well conversations really as she's expressed this to Jinshi more than once, is a reminder that she is vulnerable. Her tenacity endears her to us and of course to those who know her. I don't know what happens next but, saving royalty usually deserves a reward but, more people should now be more aware of her and her affiliation with Jinshi. Lakhan may perhaps keep a closer eye on her. At any rate, this is why I love this story so much. It's grounded in reality and the storytelling is magnificent.
@@kkramlogan Yeah, I'm not saying she should become all powerful or something, that would be dumb. Jinshi: someone is losing their head for this.
The emperor will agree since Jinshi was the intended target.
Its amazing Mao even made it to the ceremony, let alone didnt pass out on the way after getting hit in the head with a metal club. that hit alone could be life threaten to someone of her size and that was before her leg injury.
As in. That club was giant.
The voice acting in this clip, has rendered me speechless. Maomao's VA absolutely nails her disorientated, pained voice. Then the shock, and concern, and fear in Jinshi's voice? It's DEVASTATING. Don't think I didn't notice the slight echo to his voice and the //complete silence// otherwise (in fact, all the music cuts out after the beam falls, excellent choice I think). Do the choices to have silence and give him an echo because he's in that big, almost empty hall fall to the Foley department(?) regardless, they're incredible and /absolutely/ puts the emotional gravity of a black hole on this scene. Now, the animation has always been stellar, but especially that moment where she's like "what's that look on his face" and the background is blurred like - THE CINEMATOGRAPHY THERE?? blows me away. Augh, and that's not everything to this scene either, there's too much to unpack but I gotta say every little detail is amazing and appreciated.
1:47 I can't get over the look on Jinshi's face man 😞He looks so sad and worried for her my heart is tearing apart 💔💔💔
Amazing character drawing!!
It's amazing how in few seconds you can feel, the confusion, the fear, the sadness, love and desperation. In jinshi's face
That guard better start praying.
Jinshi and Lakan:
"May God have mercy, because I won't!"
There is no god who could save him from the two men coming for his head
Praying is redundant, he was a dead man heading to hell the moment he clocked her.
And running.
No point. He’ll be talking to god in real time soon enough.
The guard: **chuckles** I’m in danger!
Guard #2 who physically held back Guard #1 to keep him from swinging again is probably breathing a sigh of relief though.
His face as he passes by Lakan's side afterwards...
And Lakan's face when he realizes the "amusing" situation he had gone to watch was not so amusing after all.

As a light novel reader (and I won’t spoil a thing because I want you to enjoy it too!!), if you continue to watch the series:
When it comes to Jinshi and Maomao, just keep in mind that when it comes to romance, Maomao is an unreliable narrator due to the way she was raised/her lack of emotional intelligence. Trust her actions over her words.
But in this particular case, nah, she didn’t have a damn clue who was at that altar lol
@@friendchannel5382She knew. Just like with "the frog 🐸" incident later, she just didn't want to accept it, because of the implications it would have if it was true.
@@SabrinaPariisI think she might have known. Remember she mentioned Jinshi often purifying himself. It may or may not have clicked for her.
@@menchitaYeah, that's what I'm thinking. Girl, just doesn't wanna accept any of it, she's having none of it. 😂 She's in serious denial, even though she already clearly knows Jinshi's true identity.
The fact that maomao didn't know who it was but she still risked her own life to save someone she doesn't even know. Of course the person being Jinshi was good but I really want to know Maomao's reaction if she knew it was Jinshi's life which was on the line

I started reading the novels after 3 episodes. So glad this scene was given the justice it deserves!
The guards are nowhere around when he walks out because they are running for their lives
😂😂😂😂😂 True! 😂
Maomao does so much, and she doesn't get compensated enough for what she does.
Does enough compensation even exist for what MaoMao does?
A true servant…
it's kinda surprising how "A quiet life with a lab full of poisoned ingredients" turns out to be a hard thing even Royal money can conjure up. most of that stuff is super rare and super expensive. Could make good mcguffens for future plots though.
Elevating her puts her in the court intrigue. Keeping her at a certain level actually renders her below the notice of those gunning for him. Unfortunately I think the time of such protection has passed. She got into an altercation with the guard, witnessed things she shouldn't have, and very obviously saved a man of noble blood from assassination. She has to be on the radar of the court now. So yes, she likely will be elevated in status. And lose many more freedoms than she gains. Because it is the only way to keep those who want to hurt him from directly attacking her to get to him.
He owes her his life now.
True, and it also helps that he saved her from being beheaded in episode 4 during the consort Lihua situation (although MaoMao’s actions were much greater here). These two keep saving each other as the series continues, which is why I love them as a pair so much
And she owes Lakan a favor, he was the one who got her inside the temple. A little convenient how close by he was....
I see Maomao hurt and instantly I'm like looks like someone just signed their sentence!
The guard that messed up her face, Is there any chance we see him again in the story? I doubt he’d be punished since hitting women, regardless of status, would be acceptable in the anime’s 15th-16th Century time period. But I’m still curious with if Jinshi ever did anything about it based on 1:33 and the fact MaoMao was correct that saved lived
I don't know, but two very powerful people are upset at her injury, and his delay almost got a noble killed.
I imagine we’ll at least hear in next weeks episode some kind of mention of him being fired/demoted/executed depending on what kind of punishment he gets. I can’t imagine he’d get off without any punishment given the circumstances
In the Light novel its implied that he was punished/killed due to his actions, we never hear from him again.
@@XxfmarulzxX Figured as much. They probably suspect he had a hand in the situation.
@@nargaflargagiven what others are said he is likely to be suspected of almost killing a noble. At that point it doesn’t matter why he stopped her or if he was involved or not. Man’s life is forfeit and seen as a guard who failed in his duties. But also killed if he knew who ordered the accident the other parties would want him silenced.
A small gripe i have is when people act like her adamance that she would save him at risk to her own life was some gesture of love for jinshi when it’s just…exactly what her character has established for herself.
A strong, but abstract understanding of the politics situation she finds herself in: the knowledge that her own life is on the line, and that compared to her, this random noble she’s saving is far more important
An inability to let an interesting puzzle go, especially when motivated by rare medicinal ingredients.
And what I think is most important: A steadfast, intense sense of justice. She has shown herself repeatedly unable to help herself when she sees people being hurt unjustly, even at her own detriment (lest we forget the entire premise of the first case she solved).
Obviously, ahe also had no idea who the ‘Noble’ was, until she looked at his face and heard his voice after the crash.
Side note: I was screaming at my tv for them to at least put pressure on her leg wound, but nooo, he has to be all dramatic and carry the girl with a fractured skull allllll the way to another part of the palace as she bleeds out, dripping blood onto the ground xD
I mean c’mon Jinshi, I know you’re not that smart but PLEASE.
Good points, mostly, but remember, Jinshi isn't the apothecary, he's carrying her. We moderns forget how little was known about how the human body works until quite recently. In the West, William Harvey didn't publish his accurate accounts of blood circulation until the seventeenth century, almost a thousand years after these stories are set.
The “what happened to your face?” Broke me. Also, that’s the most he’s ever touched her. I noticed her never used her name to her face. What is that about? He kept saying hey instead of her name.
The look on monocle weirdo's face as he carried her out was just the best for me.
The last "Hey!" hurt me 😢
Bro while watching this scene i was struggling to hold back my tears, when Jinshi finds out who did this to maomao, it's already end of story for them
The guard who beat up Maomao really is screwed. He will be in hell and suffer for it three times as much.
1. Jinshi; the Emperor’s brother and Maomao’s soon-to-be boyfriend. Not only will he get Jinshi’s wrath but also the Emperor’s wrath. Of course due to attempted assassination on his younger brother. The Emperor, I think will spare Maomao’s death, punish her for the interruption of the ceremony, and later reward her for her efforts to save his younger brother from the attempted assassination.
2. Lakan; Maomao’s biological father. As only she herself knows, Jinshi knows, and the Verdigris House knows, and especially Lakan himself. As the guard unknowingly stepped on a land mine that she is Lakan’s daughter in question and him being very doting and possessive of her things won’t end well for him. I think he will be 6, no 12 feet under.
3. The owner and the sisters and Luomen; The Verdigris House and her Adoptive Father would first ban him from ever stepping foot in her establishment and second, would poison him until he is on the brink of death.
Actually, I think I pity the guard’s misfortune (Nah, I think he deserves it).

That guard is screwed. I'm sure in passing rumor the guard might of heard of Lakan's daughter and once his boss appeared, including that brief flash of anger directed at him did he put two and two together. He will end up loosing his life or fired, but what Lakan is likely capable of as a tactician is worse than death.
The great thing about the additional scene once Maomao passes out heavily hints / foreshadows further that Jinshi is more than a high ranking eunuch. He's important enough that an assassination attempt was put into motion and the other officials outside of the building kow-tow and advert their gaze. And I like to think that Jinshi's real identity is a tightly guarded secret where very few truly know or are sworn to secrecy.
That guard is already dead in 23 different languages (even latin and hebrew) 💀💀💀
I nearly lost my mind when that overgrown brute used all his strength to club her across the face and knock her down the stairs, as if someone half his size was any kind of a threat to him
Nice spoiler CR team. The title really lessened the experience when I watched the episode.
Such a woman should be loved and cherished. Eh... With such a woman you can go to the end of the world. The best girl.
Just imagine what the concubines would want to do when they hear what happened
I’m hoping the episode AFTER NEXT will depict either:
- The Hunting Trip
- The Colored Doors Challenge
Those are in novel 3. They won't be adapted this season.
Those events are too far away from the current arc. I imagine the next episodes will focus on Lakan and MaoMao's relationship and the season will end with her dancing on top of the wall.
The anime goes in chronological order. So it’ll be which took place next in the story, the anime has been following it very well thus far.
I just watched this like 30min ago 😂
This scene gave me chills! 😱
I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
and then that walk... that walk... damn...
Guys, i dont think you are prepared for the next....4 weeks. Better be ready, things are about to get really bad.

There is going to hell to pay in the next episode
Watched this during school. Tried not to cry
Yep, I think we know which palace guard is going to become an involuntary eunuch....
