@@clintcarpentier2424 while the LN didn't elaborate on that scene, there are many other details afterward that describe the hastiness of the situation. In the first paragraph of chapter 13, volume 2, it is said that she did feel like she was being carried for a short time, had a shaky feeling like she was in a carriage and then feeling like someone place her on something really soft. In the manga, when Jinshi talked about the first time he carried her like that, it also showed visual with him running and shouting something when other officials at the site buzzing.

What's so insane about this episode is to try seeing it all happen in Jinshi's perspective. My guy was just standing there performing his ritual duties and suddenly he got pushed away and almost at the same time the freaking pillar fell on where he was standing. Then it gets crazier cuz he almost died and the next thing he sees is his maid whose face is all battered up and she's bleeding from her nose and leg, then there's Maomao casually asking him for her ox bezoar before passing out.

If you are in a shock situation you can't think straight. As I had an accident as a teenie my first thought was about my 4 month old puppy that was alone at home and my parents were at their working places. In that moment I saw my thick knee in the hospital and felt not really pain... that could think normal and felt pain that was hours later. Same as I was pregnant and became premature labor and a bleeding, I thought what will happen with my child and not what will happen with me. That is cause of your brain "protect" you for getting in panic or you pass out. So it's weird but normal for that was happened and she reacted after that.

I see a lot of people thinking Lakan planned the event due to his face, but given the conversation Lakan had with Jinshi a couple episodes back, he probably doesn't know where Maomao's mother is or if she's still living or not. Since he's trying to be a parent to Maomao, he probably views her as the last link he has to the woman he loved, so seeing his daughter, who he's been unsuccessfully trying to have a relationship with, unconscious and bleeding out probably frightened him deeply. He can't force Maomao to have a relationship with him, but he really wants one with her, and seeing her in such a state shoved in his face just how easily he could lose his chance to ever form one with her.

And a new detail was just brought to my attention that helps us pin down what era the series is set in. A conversation from previous episodes that doesn't really matter too much since the series is in a fictional China, but still somewhat interesting to some.
The hat Jinshi is wearing during the ritual pins down the latest year the series can be set in. It was initially used during the Eastern Han dynasty (25 - 220 AD) and its use was phased out with the end of the Ming dynasty (1662 AD). In 1565, the Spanish opened the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, this brought tobacco and cacao into Asia, and by the late 1500s Chinese farmers were cultivating tobacco on their own. With the rise of the Qing in 1618 and the subsequent decades long fall of the Ming dynasty, and a lack of reference to the empire falling apart in the series, we can assume the series is loosely based on a time period prior to 1618.
The earliest the series could be based on is 1565 and the latest would be around 1618. As I said initially though, not really that important since the series is set in a fictional China only loosely based on the real world, but it's interesting to certain history buffs to try to figure these things out.

Maomao passed out because of concussion by the heavy club hit.
I don´t think, Lakan was the culprit of that murder attempt.
    1) He pointed out these incidents to Jinshi to be investigated
    2) He stepped forward as Maomao´s guarantor, so she may enter the building.
If he knew what´s going to happen and wanted to kill Jinshi, he simply could have kept silent about any of these.
But I suspect, he knows the person or people behind these incidents and the murder attempt,
couldn´t figure out for himself what they were up to and didn´t want his name to get involved with the investigations.

They killed people that were needed to the coincidences to happen or that knew the metal weakness and could have possibly have prevented it (ex.: the blacksmith father, the rite minister with the sweet tooth)

Maomao was most definitely still breathing. It’s pretty hard to mistakenly assume that someone is dead while they’re still breathing.
I believe Jinshi was walking at that pace because he didn’t want to give away to everyone else that she is someone very important to him. He couldn’t let anyone else see how afraid he was and had to put on a princely air as if he was rewarding someone who just saved his life by carrying her himself. Running would make the bleeding worse and could potentially endanger Maomao in the future by making her a larger target.

  • @roribeedm

The club the guard used on Maomao was called a Tetsubo in Japan. I'm not sure on the Chinese name for it, but similar weapons were used going all the way back to the first and second centuries AD. A similar weapon called the Kanabo is made out of wood and both are usually covered in metal studs.
The look of horror on Lakan's face when he saw his daughter bleeding and unconscious, definitely not the look of someone with evil intent like some people have been assuming over the past few episodes. That's the look of a father scared of losing a daughter, plain and simple.
In the manga there is no walking scene at the end. Maomao says that Jinshi is noisy and then the volume ends and the next volume starts later. So the walking scene was added for the anime. There are differences between the Webnovel, Light Novel, and Manga versions, but for the Manga version this scene didn't exist.

IDC what a single persons says on the subject... Maomao and Frieren are out here proving we can have REAL female protagonists in anime with actual depth of character writing and meaningful character development without the need for fan service (which don't get me wrong, I do enjoy) and who don't need a savior at every single turn. I personally have enjoyed both series overall more than I enjoyed JJK S2 and think both deserve nominations for AOTY in 2025... The character writing, art/animation, musical scores, the relatability of the characters, the storytelling and so much more are just on point EVERY episode of both of them.
This episode had me broken down into tears at the end, seeing Moamoa getting clubbed in the head as if she were a full grown man only to to stand back up and show her resolve and then her passing out with her eyes open nearly had me convinced she was dead. Then the look of absolute shock on Lakan's face as Jinshi exits the temple carrying her lifeless body vs the look of rage and determination on Jinshi's face the accompanying music score is just a fantastic juxtaposition. I think this is one of those series from Fall 2024 that has slipped under the radar of most and they will be finding it this spring as more of us rave about it. This season isn't even over yet and I am so excited for the second season.

One of my takeaways from this episode was, "WTF is up with imperial emergency rescue services?" A "high ranking noble" is conducting a ceremony and a massive pillar falls from the ceiling possibly killing the officiant, yet all the nobles in the courtyard just stand there. Nobody runs in to say, "Are you alright, Jinshi-sama?" Until he walks out with Maomao in his arms, for all the courtiers know, he could be bleeding out in the temple. Jinshi's slow walk to the outer palace is dramatic, but in reality somebody would have run up to at least put a bandage on Maomao's leg.

It does not look like a lacquer, but he knew for sure that something was happening. The hell of his motives. He noticed the tube on the floor during the explosion and left it there. It was he who gave Ginshi a riddle of the will of the three brothers, and it was he who reminded Gaoshun about the old business with the algae. The impression as if he just "I will allow children to deal with that." And I really like how the creators visually emphasize his moves in the episode when Lacan told Ginshi about the brothers. Like a puppet theater where the only doll was moving. He is a puppet that controls himself as a pishak to achieve any goals. Maybe his plan was to increase the value of Momaoma? For the rescue of Ginshi? But what kind of uncle did you so surprise that she rushed to push him? Didn't it be ahead of it? (What did the Ginshi royal blood be clear to me in an episode with a party in the garden where they tried to poison Lisha. Come on, on the holiday there is no Ginsha and another person who is too ill to be there? Who could be?)))))
In a light novel, Maomao began to run and panic when the fastening was found over hot pores from the boiler and candles. With ordinary metal, it would not have such a large value, but when it was a metal that melts me ... And it seemed to me that the beat was not so sharp. Perhaps the guard was really a little restrained. And even Ginshi could really run as it was depicted in Mangi. But as a nobleman, he probably cannot really a boog with a low -in -hand maid in his arms. The episode is strong in emotions, but a little confused in logic. Nevertheless I like it)

The head shot thing was really the unrealistic part when I read one version of the manga. The other version seemed much more reasonable to me, where the guard hit her on the head with his fist. She's tiny, and a very muscular guard's punch should be more than enough to do the kind of damage we see on her, but the thing the guard is holding is a bar mace, and that thing is literally an anti-armour weapon. Like, it's designed to cave in and damage people wearing helmets, and how does that hit not just shatter her skull and kill her instantly is beyond me.
But once again, we've been so spoiled by media that we grossly overestimate the durability of human bodies, and I kind of understand that the mace strike might look more dramatic.

Face on Lakan is terrifying. You know heads are going to roll. He very well may of thought she was dead. What is interesting is, I thought he was going to be the guy behind it all. But the issue I have with that theory is, why would he let Maomao go in there, knowing the risk that she could be killed by the very trap meant to kill Jinshi? I don't think Lakan was behind it after some reflection. However, that also means angry father mode will likely be kicking in in future episodes.

Isn’t it kind of wild how many coincidences came together to save Jinshi’s life here? Lihaku came to her with his concerns about the theft, Jinshi just happened to see her with him and got jealous, leading to Maomao telling him about the theft. He decides to have her look into it on a whim, presumably just to dangle the medicine in front of her, which obviously gets her sufficiently invested. As she’s researching into it, the librarian who helps her out just happens to be one who was relocated from the ceremonial hall and ends up being the final piece of the puzzle.

The realism of the shows depictions of illness and poison makes me terrified of that blow to MaoMaos head, the leg injury is minor compared to the how damaging that head injury could be.
That is in actuality a fairly decent portrayal of a severe traumatic brain injury followed by brief loss of consciousness then adrenaline kicks in and they can manage to move and be mobile for a short time.
This can give the illusion that the head injury isn't so bad, this isn't true.
As soon as they stop from exhaustion or to rest or the adrenaline rush runs out the damage shows itself properly and they fall unconscious again. They have brain damage, it might be minor or severe with potential brain haemorrhage, risk of a stroke or even possibly comatose.

    8:53 牛黄(Go-ou)
The meaning of the kanji character is "cow yellow".
It is thought to be named after the yellow color of dried cow gallstones.

21:21 蒼空の炎(Sōkū no Honoo/Flame of the Blue Sky)
I was mistaken because of the similarity of the voices, but it seems that the voice actor who plays Jinshi, Takeo Ōtsuka, does not sing this song, but Daichi Takenaka sings it.
    Unclouded eyes
I realized by the way they looked at me
I realize how foolish I am
    Turn into a flame
    I'll protect your strong heart
I will light up the path you walk
This heat that I hold in my heart
No one can take it away.
    * The above is my poor translation of the lyrics, so please just feel the nuance.
In Japan, there was a lot of talk about the inserted song and the fact that everyone's faces are down, so it was portrayed as if they were dead, but in case you are wondering, this is a symbolic scene where everyone is bowing to Jinshi because he is in a very superior position.
In the midst of all this, Lakan was standing there stunned.
So did I. "Don't walk, and stop the bleeding in your legs first," said many Japanese.
Incidentally, in the original manga, this scene is introduced as a scene where he was running in a hurry, not walking.
In the anime, it seems that the scene became a slow walking scene for the sake of direction.

Finding a good doctor willing to become a eunuch would be nearly impossible so they are stuck with whoever they can get. You are right that in the other parts of the palace they would have much better doctors as it is a position of honor with no snippy snippy.

The outer court has trained physicians with much more surgical experience than Maomao. The quack evidently isn’t very well trained, but he does not represent the baseline for doctors working in the palace. Maomao probably has all of them beat in medicinal knowledge, though.

They need her father. However, it wouldn't make sense for Jinshi to panic: 1 - he has to be dignified if he's a noble, 2 - he obviously was in the military for a while as he spoke about the food in the camps so no doubt he's seen worse injuries.

I just watch the episode today, it was mind blown and definitely heartbreaking I ever felt... 😬😰
(I still can't believe they end the episode like that without letting us know is Maomao okay or not! Also I like that the background music is sing in Japanese but keep in Chinese way.)
Every time Maomao connects the dot in every incidents in the latest episodes makes a lot of sense now! Someone was behind this was plotting to get rid of the man who died by overdose of salt and the man with food poisoning to prevent their plan to be ruined. But this is just my theory...because my suspect are two people, Suirei and the mystery eunuch.
Now I am in between either Lakan was bad or good, but I think he was showing a good and fatherly side of him in this episode. But after I see the look in his face, he must had care of his daughter, he just happen to bad at showing it without came out being creepy and mysterious. (And seeing the same creepy face on both Lakan and Maomao, definitely like father like daughter...still give me shivers.)

Lakan's face looks like that for a couple of reasons. But I'm not going to tell you why!
Remember that Lakan is the one that set them both on that path to find out the truth behind the incidents.
For me, Lakan's first reaction (where he says "She's HURT") looks *exactly* like how MaoMao's look was in the last episode. Apple and Tree, I guess.

Her facial injury might also have caused an craniocerebral trauma.
If he had been running, it would have made the situation worse.
Shaking should be STRONGLY avoided with such an injury.

My personal theory for this episode atm is that it points to Lakan. But why? Because he wants Maomao. He has been trying for years to buy her to no avail so he decided to eliminate the competition for her whom is Jinshi. He left a clue here or there because he was so confident that no-one could outsmart him as he is the palace investigator. And he's surprised at the end because 1) He plan was foiled, 2) Maomao was injured and almost died instead to his plan(it appears he cares in some way at least) and 3) Maomao has, in Lakan's eyes, outsmarted Lakan whom the only person that has done that before was her mother in go. Even if I'm totally wrong, this episode was soo good.

I am anime only at this point. But i hope to start reading soon. I dont think Lakhan is behind the assassination plot, but he *was* having too much fun leading everyone else through his fun little mystery.
My conspiracy theory is that the Emperor is behind the plot against Jinshi. It would solve potential succession crisis.

0.0 There is no way that isn't spreading all through the palace. A man of his stature carrying her out personally instead of having a servant do it. In front of all those officials. And that's without the banner thing falling and the all the ruckus she made outside first. The mens gossip has been fueled. Kinda curious if we'll be seeing the Emperors reaction to this, or at least the effects of it. The concubines too for that matter, especially Gyokyukou. She totally earned major brownie points with Gaoshun and that elderly woman though.
That one demoted worker, scared, worried, vindicated.
I read through the comments on Crunchyroll and apparently we have so much more to look forward to. There are 10 light novels out, an 11th expected soon, and this episode puts us somewhere in the second half of volume 2. 0.0 We have so much more!!! I hope it gets animated to the storys' very end!! XD

It is actually better not to run with an injured person. Jinshi is remaining calm which suits his trianing and position and that prevents him from doing anymore damage to Maomao's body. He should have stopped the bleeding, sure. As for the head blow...I really do not like that they had the guard use one of those bats to hit her. His hand would have been enough to send her flying given their size difference. Those military bats could crush skulls, that was their intended purpose. They even used them for some very brutal executions ( 'beat them to death' usually invovled these bats). So she should not have gotten up from that, it realistically should have knocked her out. Now if it had hit her shoulder, it would have broken her shoulder and possibly her colarbone but she could have still stood up...but again, that's not very realistic. Hitting her with his hand would still be awful but that would make sense for her ability to move afterwards.

Episode 19 of The Apothecary Diaries was amazing and somehow sad. Maomao shouldn't have provoked the guard the way she did but she was on the mission to save the person in the building who happened to be Jinshi. This episode also confirms that Jinshi isn't an eunuch we all thought he was. I hope I don't spoil anybody. He was so worried seeing Maomao all hurt and then carrying her out of the building to get her the medical attention she needs. A lot of fans of the anime were a bit mad of Jinshi for walking so slow with blood dripping from Maomao's leg. Sure he could have run but on the other hand what would have happen if he tripped and fell and hurt Maomao even more in the process?

2 episodes later and 1-2 months later in world her leg still hasn't healed so that proves this wrong already. Like I said in the video, bleeding out will kill you faster than a concussion will. And apparently in the LN/manga she was just punched by the guard so that's why she doesn't look as bad after getting hit by the club.

A backhand swing with a wooden stick on the ear from a well build grown man is really close to death right then an there. A bit higher and she might have died right there. But she won't hear well for a while from that ear.
But I find it a bit unrealistic that she still got up I mean that had to be enough to fracture the skull/upper jaw or at the very least it should have broken off a tooth or two in my opinion.

  • @agm631

    1. It wasn't Lakan. I don't consider this a spoiler because that line is never even considered. Lakan's character is very similar to MaoMao's in that he only cares about what he finds interesting. He will notice clues, but not get involved unless he has to or it's of benefit to him. So, one can easily surmise that he's there because he knew something would go down. But he didn't care enough to intervene directly. We've seen Maomao share this trait on numerous occasions at this point.
    2. Jinshi walked in the Light Novel. Maomao describes her fuzzy memory of the moment as a gentle rock/sway. So, definitely not running there. Not sure about the WN version. Alternately, he definitely ran in the SE manga (it's depicted in a flashback in chibi format). Not sure about the other version fo the manga.
    3. Fun Fact: Per the author, the guard who hit Maomao gets beaten by Lakan afterward. He gets a promotion 2 years later though, as he is good at his job.
