Peoples talk about the slap, but I think the sentence "Who would be happy poisoned with the same thing that killed their son?" slapped her waaay harder than anything she did to her physically. That was brutal.
Honestly, because she felt like she was doing right by her mistress, I am pretty sure after the death of the child, she felt like doing this would bring some little happiness, but truly ignorance isn't bliss.
And now, she realized that she was making the same mistake again, a mistake that took the young master, that must have been a hot pill to swallow. Imagine painting your mourning mistress' face with the powder that killed her child.
That's exactly what I'm thinking. That slap hurt for sure but that sentence is just pure pain.

dude outright starts choking Maomao (she didn't seem to mind it apparently, maybe she's also an M? I suppose it would make sense given how insane she is when it comes to poisons that she tests on herself, as some poisons do cause constriction of the throat among other symptoms, so maybe she's been pavlov'd to like the feeling due to all the poisons she's CONSOOM'd over the years etc) presumably as a type of proving a point or w/e, but she pretty much calls his bluff which makes him kinda back off due to having lost to her in the mental aspect of things, after which the next volume or w/e the 2 spend the entire volume avoiding each other

The best part to me wasn’t just the voice acting. It’s Maomao noticing Jinshi still there. Nor does he stop her the whole time. He also uses the same words she had before finally allowed to do the job she was ordered to do.
But still whoever voiced her did a tremendous job blooming out the personality of Miao miao

The madam taught her the secret arts of Hag-Fu, normally forbidden to teach to people who aren't old but Maomao exhibits so much "I'm tired of putting up with idiots" grumpy old lady energy that she qualified despite her young age. Truly, the greatest protagonist.
There was a certain amount of Tanya Degurechaff in this scene as well. (Also voiced by Yuuki Aoi.)

I loved how fast she went from a bulldog to a scared puppy in a second. It shows how much she cared to teach the idiots a lesson without taking into consideration who's in the room.

@@MrDibara Nah, I think Maomao got bold precisely because she already knew she could get away with it as Jinshi was standing and watching her. Giving Lady Lihua a poisonous substance especially after it was made clear that it was a poison (and having the most powerful person in the rear palace as witness) is an executable offence.
Except Maomao isn’t a dog, but instead a cat (it’s what her name means, as well as her main animal motif). So… lioness to scared kitten.

As a medicine student I understand the feeling of see our patients or their family doing the things we ask not to do, she is a totally everyday mood 😢

Notice Maomao's expression at 2:02 when the lady-in-waiting starts crying. Before this she was furious, angrily calling the lady out for her idiocy (and for good reason). But when the lady stats sobbing Maomao's face softens and her tone is less critical though still stern. This confirms for Maomao and for us that the lady-in-waiting didn't do what she did out of malice-she just thought she was doing what was right. Knowing how women historically put beauty above their health, the lady-in-waiting was probably taught to be this way, which makes the whole situation more tragic.
...but the slap was still deserved

I think "women were historically expected to put beauty before their health" would be a more fair way to put it considering it was more social pressure (when it was even known to be dangerous, when it comes to making women look nice we were remarkably good at not noticing that poison is bad actually)

For those curious on what the white powder is, it's lead powder makeup.
Originally made during the 18th century, during a fashion craze, where being pale was seen as beautiful or majestic.
However most people didn't know lead was poisonous at this time but that's why it was banned after the information was discovered

People have always known lead was poisonous. It's just that sometimes lead was "safe enough" in certain forms (it was used in plates and utinsils for ages, and it only caused noticable problems when eating something acidic), that people didn't think it would be harmful to apply on skin.

That was... brutal. She's by far the shortest and skinniest woman in the room and she slapped the servant so hard it knocked her down, and then dragged her to the table.
This was great, the voice actor went ballistic here.

I love when MaoMao becomes a brutally honest beast when it comes to doing right by her patient.
Perfect example of "righteous anger". She got mad for the sake of Linhua who was slowly dying because of the ignorance of those who were serving her. After the slap, drag and lecture, the other ladies in waiting didn't dare crosss her. Especially since Jinshi didn't say or do anything to stop her.
I’ll preface by saying I’ve not watched this show or read it’s source material if it has.
The amount of detail in the character acting is just outstanding in so many degrees. It’s not just the animation or the voice acting, it’s the direction of this sequence that is making this as good as it is. It’s the direction and storyboards of this clip. I don’t even know who these people are and what are their stories, but I felt the fury in the girl and then the sheer regret in the makeup lady.

There are two things I love this part of the show:
One: Maomao has an inner dark side in her where it shows how serious she was when people don't listen to her. Plus, she gave straight up facts of the knowledge she knows behind the powder that the other ladies didn't. The scary face and tone gives me dead vibes like she has the blood of Tanya
Two: The voice actor (Aoi Yuki) who voices Maomao did a excellent job for this part. I'm very happy she got to play this show. I hope she gets to play other future shows.

A dark side? Not necessarily! She went crazy, as any doctor would have done, to those who ignored her most basic instructions… and by her work, according to me MaoMao would be a kind of (unofficial) doctor specializing in poisons!!

What I find great is that this lady in waiting that she scheduled later apologized to Maomao. The rather short storylines are expanded in the anime.
THIS SCENE MADE ME LOVE MAOMAO EVEN MORE! She's trying to do her job, yet all the ladies there acting like they know better! Don't mess with Maomao!! SLAY MAOMAO! SLAY!!
She does has an intense personality
Maomao letting people have it puts a smile on my face. She has my vote for Best Girl of the Year.
Honestly she deserves it, I like her character way more than past female characters
Not sure how well the title works: Maomao's anger is so frightening because she seems like she's actually still restraining it, and this is merely a hint of it. She's *not* losing it, she's composed, thinking clearly, and *still* laying out a physical AND rhetorical beatdown.
I am happy we get to see the duality of maomao character, for there's maomao the palace maiden, who will just go with the flow and there's Maomao that was raised in a brothel, who knows when to take action because she refuses to be dragged around by others stupidity.
Maomao is normally so chill. But she's definitely a doctor at heart. Respect.
It's been a while since I've seen a good slap, and then she just dragged her by the hair Maomao was having none of it. 🤣
Last time i saw a good ol' beating, it was Chuchu in Witch from Mercury
after rewatching this I realized Maomao is really strong for being able to drag that woman across the room to the table by the hair, being at best half to 2/3rds the size of the woman
Maomao is a "country girl". These ladies in waiting are dainty.
It's the combination of Maomao slapping her and her furiously calling this lady out. *_"There are no thoughts in your head. You just think you know everything."_* hits hard. Easily one of Maomao's best moments.
I just how realistic Maomao's dark and serious side is. In most of the anime series characters snap suddenly and scare everyone. But Maomao gets serious not bcuz she is cool and Wednesday bcuz the situation is really serious and someone needs to take the action and warn people against ignorance.
Mao Mao has all the lovable characteristics of a koneko chan- smart but honest, independent but loyal, cool yet cuddly. Love how she bares her claws at her idiot detractors here. Also, the cutest and most hysterical moments are between her and Jinshi, the handsome administrator, shown at the end; in other examples of their awkward relationship, Mao Mao literally hisses like a cat when he tries to kabedon her 😱🐱
I also love the non-diegetic cat ears and tail that pops up whenever she gets excited. Maomao is certainly a very lovable koneko-chan~

Dang Moamao's is so frightening to that woman first slapping her down to the floor, pulling her hair, and that face she made was scary 😱
I seriously got so shocked at this scene but I was still cheering on Maomao to continue make the ladies understand their error.
Lately in non-action anime violence is overused to make the character badass in non-critical moments, but I like how it was used here in this specific context. This anime is so well balanced, can't wait for the next episodes!
She's the best MC this season, no doubt.

She is perfect example of never mess with those that are quiet most of the time.
And that is with the adults who still have some sense on them and might know some ways of anger management. A quiet kid wouldn't be so reasonable.
I get that she didn’t do it with ill intentions but she was so egoistic and st*pid that it was satisfying to see Maomao give her a lesson,at least she learned her lesson tho and strived to be better in the end of the ep,that was nice.

Animation this episode was way too good. Like seriously, they went all the way and it was perfect. It's not one of those fight animations where there is so much in one scene but a highly detailed animation over the whole episode with a fluidity most other shows can only dream of.
I’ve just noticed here, this scene is actually almost entirely CGI. I’ve watched this 4 times and never noticed till now. It’s almost a perfect blend that’s super subtle about it.
There’s the scene at the beginning of this episode where she’s testing food for poison and it’s like 20 seconds of detailed, realistic movement
First the Chuchu punch in Witch from Mercury, now the Maomao slap. I need to keep a lookout for characters with repeating syllable names in future anime, because apparently they're all really good at clocking punks.

Love how they had the camera follow Mao Mao but also love that the animators didn't use that tired character acting by having her shoulders shake as her anger builds, because no one does that in reality. Pure silent rage from her and I love it!
Eeeh... I know someone irl that shakes when really angry... It is a real thing and I tend to be out the door very fast when I notice it happens... but yeah bit overused in anime
Consort Lihua really must have a forgiving side to her considering the lady-in-waiting had been using a banned material that was poisonous, regardless of ignorance. I was a little surprised she got off so lightly given the time period, coming out of it unharmed and managing to keep her position. I was half expecting her to get demoted to the maid staff at the least. Historically women like her had gotten far worse punishments for far less.
started watching this now since the anime ended and I wasn't expecting this side of her. but... man.... i loved it.

Very good job the team that did the music and movement. Really makes it sink in on how serious and grimm the situation is. Then that nice small and quick change in tone in the end made things lighter, but not forgetting what had happened just seconds ago.

its fasinating to me how that lady in waiting survived this ordeal, it probably comes down to being from an important famely but she and/or the concubine killed what apears to have been the then 1. prince buy way of (admitedly ignorant) poison, despite this she kept it upp and did not in fact loose her head
This was the time I realized her voice is somewhat familiar. Her voice actor is Aoi Yuuki, who is also the voice of Tanya von Degurechaff from Saga of Tanya the Evil

This scene is what totally elevated this show for me to truly great, and man has it continued to deliver.

I will say this. This show is one of the best anime I have watched recently, easily makes my top 10 must watch anime. It's all in the detail, there are just SO many little details that they get right, even though it's not supposed to be a historical anime.

This scene was fantastic. Showed Maomao had some hella strong backbone in as dark a way as possible.
Also, even though ive seen the whole anime before, this time i know how Maomao felt, because i didnt remember Jinshi was also in the room (he got he in finally, but i just didnt recall till the end).
I've read up to volume 3 in the light novel and this specific scene is definitely one of my favorites. So, to see it in the anime was a real treat. It's just somehow even more satisfying to watch than it was to read.
Mao Mao is the best character of the season. She is literally in my TOP 3 since I read the Novel years ago.
honestly the woman's lucky Maomao entered the picture--if one of the emperor's top consorts had died there'd have been an investigation and her role in it would have likely resulted in her execution

What traitor? The lady is a moron not a traitor. She did it genuinely with good intentions not with malicious intent as she intended to make the concubine happy. She’s stupid because she didn’t take the warning seriously and needed the wake up call that her good intentions were only make her lady more ill. We can tell her lady didn’t hold it against her later when she was allowed to serve her again. Likewise the whole thing humbled her greatly.
Not really a traitor women used to use lead based makeup and such all the time previous not knowing it was properly poisonous till much later times.
@@V01DIORE Not lead based. Arsenic based makeup. It wouldn't have been that lethal were it "just" lead based (still very dangerous, but it wouldn't have killed babies like that).

The Lady in waiting got off easy compared to the enouch who was tasked to remove the powder away from that house. I hope both learned their lesson.
Notice that Jinshi could have stopped it at any time, but chose to let the beatdown proceed.

I believe in Maomao supremacy.
There's a story of China, probably apocryphal but entirely believable, that the Emperor had the idea to train his concubines in battle so they could defend him. His general, usually Sun Tzu in most tellings, tells the emperor that this is stupid, but he'll do it only if he has full say in what happens, even if it kills them.
Day one, the concubines are giggling girls playing at soldier. At the end of the day, the general asks for the emperor's favorite concubine. He then beheads her for not taking it seriously. Day two, the concubines took it seriously.
This scene has the same energy. "You were told that this is a matter of life and death. If words will not get into your head, maybe this will."

The sad thing, though is this is by no means a fictitious type of event I guess you could say. Unfortunately, several makeups, and other substances that were used by concubines or other individuals actually did have a very very detrimental effect.
I don’t remember exactly, but I believe the face powder is leased with a form of lead. Which you know gives it that bright white color. And wow, I can understand why the ladies and waiting would not know about this because well things like lead poisoning outside of very specific fields of study, wasn’t really that well known. In fact , there were times where it was actually believed that drinking from a lead lined vessel, was actually beneficial to your health. Not only that, but it apparently part of a small amount of flavor into your drink.
I saw two quick clips of this show before, and thought I'd give it a try. My god is this REALLY good. I thought it would be a somewhat cute thing, i hadn't seen THIS scene but no, its got cute but the whole PALACE INTRIQUE thing adds this whole other dimension that elevates this show. I wish id discovered it at the end so i could binge watch it because after watching all 7 episodes, having to wait SUCKS! Highly recommended!

A few episodes later, isnt this same handmaiden one of the only ones who doesnt bully and also fear MaoMao at the garden party? Or am I mistaken? I like the thought that after realising that MaoMao was here to do a job and that they were actively harming her efforts, this handmaiden in particular might have formed a more respectful opinion of MaoMao (even if she probably is still lowkey scared of our girl)
They'll remain terrified of her for a long time to come. Every time they cross her path they flinch, lol

Then when she tried to justify it by saying that she might’ve been happy with it, she hit her with the force look and spoke out, “Who would be happy with using the product that killed her son!?”

That scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in apothecary diaries, and I say this as a light novel reader.
And all of Lihua's ladies in waiting continue to be terrified of tiny little MaoMao going forwards.
