    Thanks for posting Trent. I also have only played at Nats for 2 bands Hutt City (and Hutt Municipal before the amalgamation) and Brass Wanganui (and Wanganui Garrison before that amalgamation). It was lovely catching up with Linda and Richard Richardson, Russell Boyle and the few remaining from my time with Hutt. Congrats on the band's results, and I look forward to your future posts

    This was extremely interesting from an American perspective. Thank you so very much for sharing this, as we really have nothing like this here. The most similar competition we have are band pageants, but those are for junior high and high school students and include woodwinds and color guard. When you got to the "dreaded" marching portion of the competition and very accurately described the difficulty that is inherently found in marching and playing simultaneously, I couldn't help but think what you would think if you spent some time watching or reacting to Drum Corps International. Despite it's name it is an almost exclusively American institution (we have a knack for doing that), and it showcases brass, percussion, and color guard at extraordinarily high levels. It even manages to show some oft-maligned brass instruments (mellophone) in a rather positive light. I just think exploring the different brass traditions of different cultures might be interesting. Either way, I've always loved the channel, and take care.

    Of course Wellington won. I remember a few years ago they came to Australia to compete in our nationals and my band had the joy of competing in A grade with them. They were top 3 and my band lost by a mile but it was phenomenal to hear them play.

    It seemed a very enjoyable gathering for everyone involved. To answer your question about how it compares with competitions where I live, basically adult bands don't have competions here in California, for better or worse. The point is really moot here, because in comparison to NZ, our government has botched the whole Covid thing and very few musical organizations are playing fulltime yet. In normal times, schools do compete both in parades and field shows. I think I noticed one of your parade pieces was Eagle Squadron March. Schools around here have used that piece in parades. Great report!

    It's like Test Cricket but for brass bands, being played over 5 days. I did a lot of contesting in the UK in my younger days, but they are always done in one day in the UK. When it comes to marching, my dad refused to play his normal instrument of tenor trombone due to a couple of incidents where he nearly got the entire instrument rammed through his face. He would borrow a baritone or euphonium or even an Eb bass to play the solo trombone part on the march. I played Eb bass for many years, but when I switched to BBb bass I refused to march unless they found me an old lightweight 3 valve BBb bass or an Eb to march with, the 4 value BBb basses are just too heavy to carry even with a strap (and a lot of modern basses don't have rings on them to even take a strap).

    As a high schooler in America, parades are the least of our worries, we do those all the time. It’s when you get on the field to perform a show that is really difficult, it combines marching in several directions whilst facing the audience, body work, and dance. If you feel like it, or if you even see this comment, react to a dci show or two, it is a very good way to get familiar with American marching band culture. College bands do their own thing, high school bands and drum corps are similar show wise, now in technical ability, drum corps are far better.
    Also we do not march concert tubas or euphoniums, we have specific instruments that are made for marching, such as the contra, the sousaphone, the marching euphonium/baritone, and the mellophone (ik I specifically said tubas and euphoniums, but I figured I’d mention mellophones because they’re basically French horn substitutes, and we don’t march those either)

    the role of holding the sign with the name of the band - 5:15 - as the Joker would say, "Why so serious? Let's put a smile on that face" and with your self effacing humor, you always do [to be clear here, self effacing is used in this instance to actually mean the exact opposite of its definition]

    I'm not allowed in a brass band (my instrument being considered too circular), but I do have fond memories of playing an arrangement for wind band of a brass band test piece - Resurgam (I think by Eric Ball).

    • @owensmith7530
      @owensmith7530 3 года назад

      Oh I've seen and played under similar, and worse. I've seen a conductor that held both hands with palms together in front of him, and waved them around as if imitating a fish for children's TV. Fortunately I only saw that I wasn't playing. Best conductor I played under in terms of clarity of conducting was a woman by the name of Pat France, I sometimes wonder where she is now.

    • @Metal-Possum
      @Metal-Possum 3 года назад

      In an orchestral environment you start to wonder if their arm waving correlates to any kind of time signature at all. It becomes a furious upper-body gymnastics routine more than anything, facial expressions and all.

    • @owensmith7530
      @owensmith7530 3 года назад

      @@Metal-Possum Surprisingly you do still get the time signature from that, or at least the speed the conductor wants it played at.

    If you wanna check out my personal favorite form of brass music, I’d recommend checking out DCI, Drum corps international. Some of the best brass playing I’ve ever heard is in DCI shows and it provides a really interesting new perspective.

    • @charliewhelan9488
      @charliewhelan9488 Год назад

      That's bizarre to me. DCI is cool but the standard of specifically brass playing is absolutely nowhere near top brass bands. I've listened to many auditions for DCI as well and heck, I'd give most of them a run for their money and I don't even play in a top section band in the UK! Go watch a couple of YBS recordings on RUclips if you want the absolute pinnacle of brass playing

    I miss playing REAL brass band music. In my band alot of the good musicians have left the band. We have resorted to playing oldschoold pop mucis. Last time I really were happy playing in that band was back in 2019 when we performed Oregon by Jacob de Haan at our countries national and got an overall 8th place
