The main thing I dislike about marching, apart from the annoying march itself, is that it gives the public a warped view on what Brass Bands are in this day in age. Just watching the march they wouldn't have a clue that bands could create such stunning music as seen in the A-grade own choice for example.

totally agree with you on the topic of set pieces being too 'academical' - if a piece consists of almost only flurries of notes and whatnot, it becomes incredibly boring to listen to, let alone play.
And I feel you on the marching aspect - here in the Netherlands most wind bands of any variety, except for the ones in the very traditionalist areas, have stopped marching altogether to focus on normal concerts to get rid of the 'oompah band' stigma they suffer from that prevents new young people and kids to join up, thereby preventing growth or sustaining the band.

What you describe as "test pieces" I describe as "musical gymnastics". That said, I see comparisons with many 20th/21st century composers. Once we lost all the nice melodies of the 1800s things started getting rather interesting, if you're able to make any sense of it.
As for marching, I remember our "firmly remaining D grade" band to do particularly well one year (way back when I was still active). I guess all those years of local Santa parades added up.

Here is my all time favorite band. (Dont tell my grandson!) Love these kids. In Japan, the schools dont sponsor these bands at all. They are just afterschool clubs like
any other. The school will provide them a room and a music coach thats about it. The students are responsible for logistics, uniforms, instruments, finding places to practice, and even scheduling the events where they perform. They practice 4 hours a day everry day and a total of 15 hours every weekend. The reason for the emotion in this video is this is the seniors last event before they "retire" to concentrate on finals. Another point, these band dont actually compete against each other. They compete against an ideal of perfection in the judges' heads. And winning gold has been compared to hitting a hole in one in golf when it comes to dificulty. These kids ROCKED the 2018 Rose Bowl Parade also, being by far the fan favorites ruclips.net/video/STAeLaZtjow/видео.html

Oh come on! Dunedin is not cold. Trent, come visit me in Muskoka Canada this coming winter. Join us for the Santa Clause parade. It's usually about -5C for that but can be quite a bit cooler.

Oooh Dunedin is a different kind of cold. One summer when I visited it got down to 4 degrees Celsius at night and the wind was lazy, going straight through ya. Also, our houses and buildings aren't built for the cold so you never really warm up properly.

Being an Eb Bass player when I was younger, I hated marching. How are you supposed to play well when the instrument is swinging about every time you take a step? I reluctantly switched to BBb Bass at the band's request, and made it clear part of that deal was I would never march again.

Journey into Freedom, what a piece! I remember doing that back in the 1980s as solo horn with Soham Comrades Band here in the UK. I can’t remember where we came in the contest but it certainly wasn’t first so we’ll done! As for marching, we used to take part in a big parade in Ely that involved something like half a dozen bands. There was a lot of camaraderie, with each band trying to out blow and out do the other; quite good fun but, like you, I preferred the sit down jobs.
As for contesting, did you ever find yourself backstage waiting for your band’s turn to go on and willing the soprano of the band in front to miss that important high note!

Trent - would you fancy a trip to America to come to the annual Drum Corps International (DCI) championships? There are some really stellar groups - Carolina Crown is probably the finest brass line in the competition - I encourage anyone that enjoys brass music to check out DCI!

It's on my bucket list to come one day, but flights to the US are very expensive, so it's not something I could ever do on a whim.

    Great video 2x👍
When I was 15 I played euphonium for North Skelton Silver band. The highlight for me was competing in the Royal Albert Hall in the top section.

Here in Portugal we mostly have 2 types of marching in wind bands - the regular march like the ones in this competition (except we have no drum major) and the procession march, that is a lot slower and used on religious ceremonies.
Those processions are a decent chunk of the income for a lot of bands, and have a whole luggage of local tradition and pride (this last part varies greatly from place to place) so while no one enjoys it on a musical level, pretty much everyone does it.

I did all the music stuff in school, except the marching band. The marching really wasn't my thing. Part of it may be that I played french horn, which is really hard to play while moving around, but yeah I hated it.

Ah, that difference between technical complexity and the pleasantness of a piece. I have never felt myself drawn towards Liszt or Chopin on the piano. Flying up and down all over the keyboard, chromatics, leaps, accidentals everywhere. Fiendishly difficult, musically demanding and decades beyond my own abilities, but some of those pieces feel ugly on my ear. There comes a point where I am willing to trade off some of the more elaborate technical aspects in the interests of playability and - to my decidedly mediocre capabilities - pleasantness of tone. I'm sure I could write something to confound the most proficient of musicians by tying their fingers up in knots, but that's useless to me if the result sounds ugly.
There's definitely a place for grading as a means of assessment of a player's technical competence, and charting their progress, but there's also a place for "a nice tune that people can hum". It's not dumbing-down to consider one's audience and produce something that is accessible. My own enjoyment of brass band performances is driven more by the wall of sound, the variations of tone, colour, shading, than the skill level of the performer.
As Beecham is reported to have said, "The English don't much care for music, but they do love the noise it makes". Being English, I have to agree.

Hi Trent, I tried donating to you using PayPal, but it says it isn't taking donations right now. Well, I say donating, but really it's a small amount of payment compared to the years of entertainment you've given me, and the watches you deliver to this day! I've practically grown up with your content as a former band kid (clarinet and later also bass trombone, if you wonder :)).

Have you ever heard of marching band competitions they are where we marching band players and marching bands in general I'll go to one place to play our shows from morning to evening for some some bands playing in the morning so I'm in the evening basically from let's say 7 in the morning to around afternoon ish maybe even later usually they are around 10 minutes long and that is how we're grated based on how well we March in time, we play in time all of that so yeah those of us here in America understand the pain of having to March in step in Time for different speeds

I love how you say the test pieces are academic and that’s why you don’t like them but when you demonstrate instruments you use solos like the carnival of Venice which was entirely based around the Arban book specifically made to get harder and harder and to be academic same with every other variation solo out there. They are academic. But you seem to play them a lot.

I’m so lucky to play in a band that doesn’t march. Play on the beat or as a French horn player, just after, and just walk however it suits me is the easiest way for me to march. Else it was the opposite of this: walk like the others and make horrible noises.
