Fun Fact: In the movie Everything Everywhere all at Once they referenced the Smash Bros bat sound.

That's a common sound sample, not specifically Smash

Spazzy here, just want to point out that I have since gone back and replayed Smash 64, and while most of what I said stands, I think that I played on a sub-optimal emulator and that I was probably way harsher on the game than I wouls be if I played it on original hardware or a better emulator

None of what you said holds up in the slightest, because it's clear you did'nt approach this as the first game in the series but expected it to play more like the newer smash games. So you were unfair to it pretty much right from the start, of course it's not going to have all the cool stuff added later it was a game Sakurai could only work on during free time with very little faith or budget from Nintendo. For the start of the series and for the time it came out it was a very good start to the series, and if it did'nt do well we would'nt have the other four games now.

@Cloud-dt6xb I get what you're saying, but the entire point of the podcast that this is a part of is how well classic games hold up and if they are worth playing today - not how impactful or great the games are in the context of the time and circumstances of their release. I was in high school when Smash 64 came out and it was a great N64 game - I just don't think it does anything better than Melee or other later entries, so it's hard to recommend it (once again this for me, personally) unless you want to see the origins of the series or if you have a particular nostalgia for it.

    Happy 25th, Smash 64!
I decided to boot up this game after not playing it for years (Thanks, Wii Virtual Console!), and it was tough to get used to. I realized that there were so many normal mechanics, such as air dodging and move-cancelling, that had not been implemented, which made me appreciate the sequels even more.
I also came to learn that I never unlocked Mushroom Kingdom on my save file. I am attempting to remedy this while I listen to your discussion.

The other new antecedents are the Sakurai videos talking about the development of the game and series as a whole. Even recounting the story of the couple that changed the world by being noobs at KOF

What race to the finish in Brawl?

Ness doesn't have PK Flash in Smash 64. His neutral is PK Fire.

For the one first-party and one third-party question, I would pick Wario and Bomberman.

I can't believe it's been 25 years. I currently have all the games in the series, minus the one for the 3DS.
