Speaking of Jeff Porcaro's intros, there's one in particular that I've always loved: Bill Champlin - Without You (1981). He just starts the groove with a gorgeous set of triplets that puts you in the right mood for the rest of the song!
After noticing a very young-looking drummer on TV's "Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" in August 1971, my wife and I got to hear 17 year-old Jeff Porcaro live when the husband/wife duo played Fort Wayne, Indiana's Memorial Coliseum on Sunday March 19, 1972. The local newspaper later reported that it was the highest-grossing concert to date in the city's history. Just two years later we recognized Jeff on drums with Steely Dan when they headlined at the U. of Toledo on Sunday April 21, 1974. He took way less money than he was making with Sonny & Cher for the opportunity to play with Becker & Fagen. When that tour ended in July, they made 20 year-old Jeff Porcaro the session drummer on their next album "Katy Lied," released in early 1975. Later that year he became the studio and touring drummer on Boz Scagg's Grammy-winning album "Silk Degrees" --- and he did all of this before the age of 22. I'm always hoping to hear from another fan out there who saw Jeff in concert with both Sonny & Cher and Steely Dan, but so far no luck.
My God, what a pocket! It’s like an easy chair for any rhythm or lead instrument to to just rip within. Sweet snap of that snare. And Jeff Porcaro just did this in his sleep. We lost an amazing musician far too soon. Does anyone know where to find this song/project in full mixed form?
back in the 70 recording studios used metronome.but the click went out from the headphones i got in to the microphones, the the studios begun to used the" blinking light metronome"
He did that during the "Push Back the Walls" sessions with Scott Page, etc. It's here at RUclips. It was Scotty, Lenny Castro, several others, and right before they kicked it off, he dropped a handful of Regals across the snare in front of him; the whole room cracked up! 😂
Amazing footage, Jeff was long gone before I was born but he’s a huge inspiration for me on the kit and Watching videos like this makes me so happy, thank you for uploading this. RIP legend
Just the other day I was listening to Bobby Caldwell's Carry On and I decided to look up who played on the record. Sure enough, Jeff was on it. It brought a huge smile to my face. While I haven't actively sought out all of his recordings, it's great to stumble onto one.
Check out Jeff Porcaro's Discography. It's as comprehensive a list as you can find, in alphabetical order by artist, and it even tells you how many tracks he plays on each disc. I probably have more than 300 of those CD's just to be able to sample Jeff's approach to so many styles of music. He was one of a kind.
Quando mandava ele solar eu fazer uma frase com muita nota ele pegava um monte de baquetas e soltava em cima da bateria isso era para os caras nunca mais dizer como ele deveria fazer !!!
Damn, I finally found a fucking yt comment of yours without the same Carlos Vega, Jeff Porcaro and Lenny Castro always in my heart. Thiago from Brazil!
@@martywalsh4427his Dad did the right thing for his career (ultimately Jeffs..). Emil Richards, Hal Blaine, Rich Lepore, Al Lepak, and the Porcaro's were all from the Hartford-Springfield area...even Kenny Aronoff is right up the road in the Berks.
yes Joe saw LA as the future. I worked with Mike quite a bit and of course Jeff. The first time I played with Jeff I was 19 he was 17 and the groove with us was immediate. We played a few more times then Jeff blew up and I next saw him and Mike on the first hit I played on Love Pains by Yvonne Elliman.
@@martywalsh4427 Oh wow Yvonne...from the theatre world and the big hit from SNF... LA must have been such a dynamic place in the 60s and 70s...and quite frankly affordable. Perfect weather too..

@Marty Walsh 5 August, 2021, is 29 stinkin' years without THAT groove. Having spoken with those who were friends of his, I was told he was one of the most generous people. I suppose, when it's your Time to Go, it's your Time. I miss that groove, tho.
Whoever's putting this raw footage up,THANK YOU
Marty Walsh who’s playing guitar in these videos is posting them.
Jeff Porcaro is a big inspiration to me. Thank you for recording these videos.
Jeff's brilliance knocks me out. What a genius!

Love those fills in that intro. I know Bonham was one of Jeff's idols and he really nails those triplets ala Bonzo style but better IMHO.

Nice! I love hearing the click as well. Jeff’s groove feels SO good! On top of it. I would like to hear more of this. 😀
I can't believe this footage existed. The engineers wife gave it to me years ago.

When you hear by the GREAT Jay Graydon that Jeff was not good with the click... 😞
Here the prove of the exact opposite, if needed...
Yeah bye bye click haha
I remember the Toto boys saying Jeff preferred doing recordings without a click as he naturally pushed and pull the time slightly by a few bpm.
What's The song they are playing?
Enter Sandman
Passion, possession, position by benny hester.
Thanks Ilias!
🙂
this was the intro for a song called if you die, by Benny Hester, on his 1989 album Perfect
I think it's "Passion, Possession, Position" from the same album instead?
