- In this video I build a semi hollow carved top double cut electric guitar with f hole. I stain the guitar with angelus leather dyes and give the body and headstock a nitrocellulose clear coat finish.
For more detailed footage and explanations of how I made the guitar. Check out the full series here: • CARVING a QUILTED MAPL...

Beautiful! And very refreshing to see no CNC involved
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
There’s a lot of really cool, innovative designs this year. This one is the best out of all of them in any group.
I wouldn't go that far but thanks a lot, there has been some real talent this year. 4th Avenue and Gabriele Réti have been my favourite entrants
Wow. For an "amateur" luthier your skill level is amazing. Gorgeous build.
Thanks Weevil, definitely an amateur, this is guitar number 15. Please vote for me if you like it! greatguitarbuildoff.com/products/ash-finlayson

You are truly a master craftsman. Of course, the whole build is fantastic, but I'm especially blown away by the dye work. WOW!!!
Thank you mate, appreciate that. Ash
Can't stop staring at the quilted top.. It is sooooooooo beautiful.. It feels like looking at a surface of a planet. Absolutely gorgeous! 😍🤩
Better than any of the guitars that were voted into the top ten. Fantastic work!
Thanks mate
Really beautiful, amazing work. And it sounds great too.
Thanks Ander, appreciated
Beautiful
Killer finish 😮
Thanks man
inspiring work.
Sounds really good man!
Thank you mate
Fantastic! Truly love the color! Great job. 👏🏼
Thank mate
@@ADFinlayson they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery.. the guitar that's in my profile picture I think I'm going to be doing the same color as yours. 🙌🏼🤘🏼
Such a stunning guitar. Beautiful sounding too. Very well done.... cheers.
Love your methods and the whole documentary.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful guitar!!! Incredible work!
Thanks mate
Just beautiful!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great playing, and really beautiful build...one of the nicest finishes, in the build off.
Thank you kindly!
Sounds fantastic! Good luck!
Thanks Chris
Congrats on the finish!
Thanks dude, it needs more buffing though, ran out of time.
Excellent stuff - thanks for taking the time and effort to document the build... and good luck in the #GGBO21. It looks and sounds a true masterpiece - a fitting reflection of your luthiery skills. 🤘
Thanks very much Nigel, I hope I can count on your vote 😂
@@ADFinlayson You can... and it's done 😁
Looks and sounds great. Well done mate
Thanks bud
That came out Amazing. Killer work, wonderful quality, sounds great, looks like it plays like butter, and i don't blame you one bit for keeping it for yourself! Someday I'll do this and get there myself, one day... Very inspiring dude. Thank you for sharing this with us all. Hit me up if your ever in the Pacific NW in the States, and bring that beauty with ya!
Thanks for the lovely comment Nathan. All the best, Ash
nice
This is a great build and a great video. Incredible skill and craftsman ship to build the guitar and do all the inlays and staining and more highly skilled parts of the job. You could easily work for PRS with these skills. Love all the details. I was kinda hoping the switch on teh guitar was a piezo as i'd love to head what piezo bridges sounds like with Tremonti style pickups and amp. You got a new follower today.
Thanks Shane and thanks for the follow. One of these days I will do a Piezo build, I just made this one out of parts I had.
It's beautiful guitar... would not kick it out of bed so to speak!
ha thanks mate
I wasn't too sure about the color when you were applying it, but under that high gloss finish it looks great.
Thanks Dave. A fair few of my viewers switched off when I put the second layer of stain on but stains always look very different once they've got lacquer on them. You've got the yellowing effect of the lacquer and the base stain colour will always be the dominant colour if it's not sanded way back.
Just amazing. A fantastic sounding guitar that looks stunning as well. I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. It is very useful to see your methods and how you work. A great series. I look forward to your next project. Keep up the good work. (Nice playing too!)
Thanks for the nice comment Paul, I've got a Singlecut and SG2000 builds I'll be cracking on with in July, I'll try and get some of that uploaded. Cheers, Ash
@@ADFinlayson Look forward to seeing that Ash, I followed the instructions and clicked on the heart. Didn't seem to do much but I trust it worked. Yours is the best electric guitar I have watched. Good luck.
Really enjoyed watching what I could of your build process.
The quilt beautiful everything pops very nicely done,
One small question in the small amount of time that I had to enjoy watching
your build,,,I never saw you install a truss Rod …is it my mismatch or did you
pull out something very interesting. Thanks again!’
Cheers!
Thanks for watching Patrick, there is a series for this build, if you watch this one, you will see the full neck build. ruclips.net/video/l94-nmfWAj4/видео.html
Amazing finish and sound! Congrats! I was looking for a PRS semi hollow design to do mine, do you have the PDF templates or something similar? I can't find them. Thanks a lot!
Thank you. Sorry I don’t, I didn’t work off pdf and this shape is not the same as a prs semi hollow - I drew a similar design to the classic DC and made a template
Good lord. How many hours/days/months does it take to build a guitar of this quality?
If I had to guess I would say around 100 hours, give or take.
What kind of bridge is that? The exact model? Awesome guitar dude!

Noodling worthy of the Opeth T.
LOL.....this is why a luthier built custom guitar is so expensive.......lots of work for one guy
And it’s worth every minute and every penny
Great video! Subscribed and found you on instagram. 👍
The color is very beautiful, but the sound of the people is different.
