  • www.premierguitar.com PG's Joe Coffey is On Location in Memphis, TN, where he visits the Gibson Custom Memphis factory. The Gibson Custom Memphis factory builds all the ES hollow- and semi-hollow bodied guitars, the white Les Paul and the Gibson EDS-1275 double-neck. In this segment, we get to check out how the ES Series guitars are built. Here, we get to see how the wood is cut, pressed, sanded, bound and eventually put together.

    I toured this factory in April 2011. It was like heaven for me, especially since I'm like a huge Gibson fan. I know I played at least 20 different Gibbys in the retail shop including the Eric clapton and Mike Bloomfield Les Pauls. I also got to play my first EDS-1275 which happened to be a Don Felder model. (I'm only 15)

    Toyota doesn't have to wait for the lacquer to cure.
    If they didn't have to wait for glue/finish to harden, they could probably do one in 13 hours or less. That's life when you're working with wood.
    Was just there a couple of weeks ago. No photography (including cell phones) allowed and you have to wear safety glasses. You also don't get as close to the workers as you see here, but you do get to see all of the building process (including cnc necks, electronics, final adjustments, etc.)

    @fragman,thanks for the comment/info what I was saying is whereas Fender or Gibson will make you a their version of a "custom shop" instrumemnt,its not going to be much different from what they already make. Whereas Carvin uses their 'stock' instruments as a 'starting point',and from there you can literally make any changes that you want aside from the traditional pick up change , the wood or perhaps the color.

    @Jackwee,I'm not knocking fender or Gibson instruments. I'm sure they have hundreds of loyal customers,hell,I even own a Fender myself. What I'm saying is that when I think of a Custom Shop guitar or bass I think of a company like Carvin who start with the regular 'cookie cutter' instrument,and say,this is where you can start and here are your options just do YOUR thing and we'll make it. Now,that's Custom Shop!! I will put my Carvin guitar (CT6) and my LB75 against any Fender or Gibson anyday!

  • @sosmooth7
    @sosmooth7 12 лет назад

    I've been hearing a lot of guitars company saying that they make 'Custom Shop" instruments. When I think of a custom shop instrument,I think of getting an instrument the 'way you want it',not the way the company makes it and sells it to you. So with that said,Gibson (nor Fender) is truely a custom instrument maker unlike CARVIN,the true custom shop.BTW,their instruments quality surpass Gibson and Fender's hand down!!!

  • @MICKEYISLOWD

    Why do Gibson employee's act so proud of their Gibson guitars, I have heard more QC issues from Gibson customers than ALL the other companies COMBINED!!!
    I own a Gibson M-III and the Trem posts are set in the wrong position so the strings run off to the treble end, the scratch plate has been cut the wrong shape so doesn't hug the Trem cavity or neck correctly, the locking nut clicked when you depressed the trem bar because the underside of the nut was radiused and couldn't sit flush to the (FLAT) nut slot, the neck inlays are not centred, the claw screws were put in at an obscure angle and so adjustment is difficult and the bridge PU (500T) isn't spaced correctly so the pole pieces don't sit under the strings correctly and loss of volume/dynamics is quite evident..
    BTFW I have searched the internet for Gibson M-III pics and found many others with the same ailments so I didn't just get unlucky with mine. I have contacted a Local Luthier and he can put all the Gibson F***k ups to right except the Shoddy cut scratch plate, his opinion was that Gibson were outrageous for letting this guitar reach the stores and NO WAY could have been simply overlooked as there are too many OBVIOUS flaws here which means they don't give a rats ass about their customers or their products period. I have contacted Gibson many times about a replacement Schaller (Gibson stamped) trem as mine is looking very tired and they REFUSE to reply to my Emails and written letters EVERY TIME.
    So to sum up Gibson they have just LOST a customer for LIFE who would have bought many products from them in the future. I was going to buy a couple of the re-issue M-III but I will now have them made by a British luthier who will build them to a FLAWLESS standard!!!

    • @MICKEYISLOWD
      @MICKEYISLOWD 8 лет назад

      julosx
      I'm happy your guitars are good quality but I can assure you many are not. I saw a YT video of a guy sending back his M-III reissue as the paint was flawed with blotches and the trem was fitted incorrectly in the same way mine was 25yrs earlier. Another video I watched just yesterday about a 2008 Les Paul going in to a luthier to have the neck heel reduced for playability reasons and as he was removing wood he found the tenon joint had a 3mm gap running the entire length of the joint which he had to fill. He explained the insert was cut too small and should of never gone out b'cause this would effect strength and integrity of the joint also would affect the transfer of vibrational resonance through out the guitar. The bottom line is someone f****d up here and instead of putting it right assumed noone would know about this as when glued the fault would be hidden for good. He also said as a guitar builder (Crimson Guitars) he thought Gibson quality control has always been suspect and of late after the 29% price hike has gotten a whole lot worse.
      My first comment was not intended as a rant truthfully but they have lost me as I don't like giving them my hard earned money without the confidence I'm getting a Top notch axe they are capable of creating. Gibson is a prestigious maker and has produced some of the best designs and great guitars out there but considering a 29% increase across all their guitars I can accept reluctantly if their product is pretty much flawless but I'm saying it aint and many people who have excellent knowledge and hands on guitar making skills will tell you the story unfortunately. I love my M-III much b'cause it is the best playing/sounding guitar I have owned since it was put right from the dismal screwups I mentioned earlier and I want a reissue really bad b'cause the new colours are very nice and they sound just as good on YT at least with the different PU config but I'm making my stand against the purchase and have e/mailed Gibson the reasons why also and they have not even replied to assure me their reissue M-IIIs are well made and have no faults or concerns with them...So what does that tell you about Gibsons customer services and customer satisfaction? It tells me they don't give a ratts ass what I think and don't give a cow whether my guitar is even functioning perfectly when I get it, I mean what is it to answer a bloody e/mail??If I was complaining about the Famous Les Paul would that prompt them to speak to me any more? Now they got their money you mean nothing to them when they should always be helpful to customers with genuine concerns and question but I got two finger up in my face instead.

    • @julosx
      @julosx 8 лет назад +2

      +Mickeyislowd "Many are not" doesn't mean much to me, I'm sorry. I don't know any statistics either. Word is, Gibson produced so many guitars along the years - quite a few. So it's probably inevitable that some of them are flawed. The same can be said of other brands products.

Question for you,have you ever seen a Fender or Gibson that didn't LOOK like a Fender or Gibson? Answer,NO! there's your answer to YOUR Custom Shop question.
