This track was written by Bob Christianson and licensed as the theme for NHL on ESPN back in the day as well as a handful of tourneys in the ensuing years.

Unfortunately those games are mostly on ESPN+ and Hulu. The amount of games that are broadcast on regular ESPN is minimal. I have the basic Hulu subscription and I did see that I could add on ESPN+ for an additional $9.99 per month but I’m gonna wait until the start of the 2023-24 season to purchase it because the 2022-23 regular season is almost over.
And it’s sucks even though I’m Canadian

It’s wonderful that ESPN has NHL coming back on TV because ESPN is the worldwide leader in sports and there has not been an televised NHL game on ESPN since 2004. You know what else would be really cool about this? If Gary Thorne got to announce the play by play.
I also first heard this theme music in ESPN NHL 2K5. Martin St. Louis was the game’s cover athlete.

Replace champions with world cup 1994 usa tv theme. Almost impossible to find nowadays though.

Hearing this is absolutely pure nostalgia fuel... The first time I heard this theme was on a NHL video game on the original Xbox back in the day. It's still epic
2K putting the ESPN theme on their games was such a nice touch, especially since ESPN had lost NHL coverage by then and that game was the only way you could hear it at the time.
That said, I'll never forget this theme playing while talking about Mark Messier's guarantee to beat the Devils before getting a hat trick.
The theme is back, now it's time to bring back Gary. He wants the job back, ESPN better not fuck it up.

@@dxrocks06 As unfortunate as it is, Hartford is never getting a team again. They could've managed to stick around if Karmanos wasn't a cheapass, but now there's no shot. Hartford is way too small a city and Connecticut is split dominated by the New York and Boston markets. As for Quebec, I think they have to be next in line after Seattle.
Quebec City better be the next place to have NHL hockey. That especially since they have both a brand spanking new arena, and built in fanbase all ready to go, plus an immediate historic rivalry with the nearby Habs rekindled whenever needed. If Winnipeg was finally able to get a major league team to return there against once long odds after a decade and a half, than they no doubt should too. Hartford sadly is way low on the pecking order though. Houston would be an interesting choice, since they too have a major league arena, a hockey history with the old Aeros, along with a would be instant in state rivalry with the Dallas Stars (who have long proven to be a success in the state of Texas) as well. Wouldn't exactly be my first choice to put a team, but could perhaps work under the right circumstances. That and maybe Portland, Kansas City, or possibly Hamilton, ON, if Canada may get another team after Q.C. one day also.

@@Itsgwaz NBC being the other network with TV rights is not for sure yet; from what I read today Fox has also made a bid for NHL rights, and CBS either has or it's about to as well. NBC is still the favorite to keep NHL tv rights, but weirder things have happened. I remember back in the late 90s when ABC, CBS and Fox all outbid NBC for the NFL rights, and they went a decade without pro football; the same happening for the NHL is not impossible.
Hopefully they just let NBC have basketball once again, what with the NHL heading back to where it belongs once more. That would be the very best case scenario if you ask me.
It’s confirmed that ABC is getting the Cup finals and I think it’s safe to say they will get an extra handful of games too

The 90s are finally back
Here’s a rundown of the announcers for the return of the NHL on ESPN:
Sean McDonough will be the lead play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s NHL coverage. Steve Levy will do occasional play-by-play but primarily will be the lead studio host (Levy likely would have been the lead play-by-play announcer but because he is the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football that probably ended up being the reason why he won't be the lead announcer). John Buccigross, Bob Wischusen and Leah Hextall will also do play-by-play. Mark Messier and Chris Chelios will be studio analysts. Ray Ferraro and Brian Boucher will be co-lead analysts, calling games primarily with Sean McDonough. Other analysts on ESPN will be Cassie Campbell-Pascal, Kevin Weeks, Ryan Callahan, AJ Mleczko, Rick DiPietro, Hilary Knight and of course Barry Melrose.
