NHL on Fox theme is still epic after all these years. Despite the beating they took from many for introducing the glowing puck, the truth is that they popularized hockey back in the day and exposed it to the masses. All of a sudden all the kids in my school were talking hockey.
"Hockey elitists" hated it, but you're absolutely right. It made the casual viewer able to follow the puck easier and helped the game grow in the US especially in non traditional markets. This was at the time when Tampa, Florida, San Jose, Anaheim and, and others were joining the league. Many of the fans in those areas weren't super familiar with the greatest game ever played and things like this helped.
Hello, everyone, and welcome to to ESPN’s presentation of the National Hockey League. I’m Gary Thorne and joining me this evening is my partner, Bill Clement!”
A pity, too - NBC really should've negotiated to keep the sport more accessible & in the minds of us fool Yankees (better than ESPN stuck under Iger's boot at Disney), NBC alongside TBS would've been fine by me, maybe some good can come from AT&T and Bally hanging it up? I'd be interested to see CBS gun for a slice of the pie again as well (and NHL on PBS would be a sight to see if some stations went hard in on such an opportunity!)
The theme at 0:01 sounds so grunge you could only imagine that the ghost of Kurt Cobain visited the Fox Network studio to empower those disc jocks employed by Fox to be very creative in making that incredible sounding NHL theme song. Or maybe that theme song was the theme song of choice for Fox because it was played to be a battle cry at the time it was released to convince the NHL to expand the total number of teams participating in the NHL to 32 by granting the city of Seattle a brand spanking new hockey franchise. Go figure.
I have been looking for the Senators Hockey on Sportsnet theme for so long. It was a huge part of my childhood and I completely forgot what network/when the song was played but I knew that every time a sens game was on I would hear it. I’ve been playing it over and over in my head for about a week Edit: I searched up the sportsnet one and just felt like it wasn’t right, something was missing. Turns out it was yet the sens broadcast touch
@@tylerlarsen1842 yeah, it was a heavy guitar riff. Super undervalued for how good it was: ruclips.net/video/pSOS4Q2cESk/видео.html&ab_channel=rickybobby887
My thoughts on each individual song: FOX/Former FOX Sports Networks: This is a great song. It sounds like something you would hear in the arena itself with the heavy alternative rock sound. ESPN: I've always loved epic orchestral sports themes, this being no exception. It's probably because I've watched a lot of NFL broadcasts over the years. ABC: Like with ESPN, an epic orchestral theme and straight up my alley. NBC/NBCSN: Love the fast pace of this one. Fits well with the sport. TSN (former): TSN always had some good theme songs (this included), with particular shoutout going to the theme song for their international hockey broadcasts. TSN (current): First of all, f*** you for taking this away from HNIC, Bell Media. Secondly, this version sounds pretty close to the version of the song used in the 1970s and 1980s. CTV Sportsnet: This actually sounds really good, all things considered. Rogers Sportsnet: Another one of those epic sounding orchestrated numbers that I like. Hockey Night in Canada themes: The Hockey Theme: Oh, hell yeah! Fellow Canadians, please rise for our unofficial national anthem. This is the greatest theme song in the history of sports. No other sports theme even compares. Canadian Gold (original version): Not a big fan of this one, even in a vacuum. Not helped by the fact that it had to replace THE MOTHERF***ING HOCKEY THEME! Secondary theme: Much better than the first version of Canadian Gold. I would've been fine if this was what replaced The Hockey Theme. Canadian Gold (current version): For all of the shortcomings of Rogers following their takeover of HNIC, this is the one thing that definitely improved because of it. This version of Canadian Gold sounds almost nothing like the first version and completely blows that version out of the water.
I think I get what you mean with F Bell for taking the HNIC theme. It's like when I hear Roundball Rock after hearing it on FOX after plastered over all the great 90's NBA on NBC action. It makes me irrationally angry.
Hello fellow FailRace conspirator!! Completely with you with your appraisals. Who in the name of FUCK thought it was a good idea to let HNIC let go of The Hockey Theme?? It's like ITV nicking the Match Of The Day theme tune over here - and they would, given half a chance, damn them!!! To my ears, the Molson HNIC theme at 8:58 is the best, much better than the bastardised TSN efforts. But I like Canadian Gold as well - please don't hurt me!!
That's an older version of the theme, and I think the Sens were the only team that Sportsnet had a deal with for regional broadcasts at the time. It's a much different situation in the present, though TSN still has regional deals with three of the teams.
I liked the ESPN one, seems legit for the US, while the NBC one is okay. The old Hockey Night In Canada which is the "Hockey Theme" one is by far the best one of them all, I really didn't like the version used by TSN "Uck."
The NHL is back on ESPN this fall and will be airing games on both TNT and TBS until the spring of 2028. ESPN will simulcast the finals with ABC, ESPN2, and ESPNEWS in 2022, 2024, 2026, and 2028, while TNT will simulcast the finals with HBO Max, TBS, and TruTV in 2023, 2025, and 2027.
@@princeofpop8 Under certain circumstances in the 2023, 2025, and 2027 finals (eg game 7), the NHL may require Turner to air finals games on terrestrial television stations in the markets of the competing teams. I hope that this might not be necessary.

Probably younger than 24, but at the very least you started watching hockey after 2004 (the last season the NHL had a contract with ESPN - that is until this year's World Cup).
I'm also a Canadian, and suffice to say, making a sports theme that's better than the NFL themes is a VERY tall order. There are so many awesome songs just from the NFL broadcasts alone, like the Fox NFL theme (as you mentioned), the Faith Hill versions of "Waiting All Day For Sunday Night", "Are You Ready for Some Football" and "Heavy Action" from Monday Night Football, the theme that the NFL Network used to use for Thursday nights, ANYTHING from NFL Primetime, and the themes used for the NFL Presentation clips shown before every game. Pick your f***ing poison.
Maybe you should get out of Canada and emigrate to the States to get jacked up listening to all of those NFL gameday themes and not bother giving ear to the hockey themes whether those hockey games are televised live or on tape delay by the Canadian or American sports networks.
NHL on NBC. I miss hearing, “Hello everyone I’m Mike Emrick and this is the NHL.”
Now it’s Eddie got just the pipes but mike is greatly missed
That channel wa my childhood. I would be where I am in hockey if it wasn't for NHL on NBC

Christopher Salazar, even the newest HNIC theme song is better by comparison. But neither one beats the classic HNIC theme tune. 🎧🎵 ☺️

3:00min NHL on NBC :P
ABC I feel is still the best. It’s even so much better during the intro into 2001 Stanley cup game 7 when ray bourque won the cup.
