“This is Charlie Jones along with Randy Cross. It is a very cold afternoon but it is clear, the sun is shining, but it is not shining in the hearts of the Cleveland fans here today Randy.” - Intro to the last home game of the original Browns, December 95
You know what NBC should do one Sunday night, have a throwback telecast. Have original graphics and theme for just one evening. They could use this theme or another theme and have the graphics from that era. That would be awesome to watch.
That would be great. The old 70's intro. Then the disco theme from the 1980 and 1981 seasons. Maybe some "Send Them Victorious", which they sadly only used in 1985 (my first year watching the NFL as a kid), and of course, this theme.

It was a lot different than the theme that was used from Super Bowl XXVI to the 98-99 season. A revised version of the 1999-2001 theme was introduced for Super Bowl XXXV in 2001 and was used for the 2001-02 and 02-03 seasons. Then beginning in the 03-04 season, CBS changed the NFL theme to Posthumus Zone which they continue to use to this day. I wish CBS would go back to the old theme, even if it's the 1999 version or the 2001 version. But I agree and say that both the 1999 version and the 2001 version of the old NFL on CBS theme are not nearly as good as the original version and the 1998 version of the theme.
Dude! You have no idea how long I have been looking for this. What happened to it? I remember hearing it, and then I didn't hear it any more. Much better than anything they have done since.
Yes awesome theme. It was 19 years ago today on August 31, 1997 the 1st day of the regular season and only time ever the NFL regular season started in August and the last season NBC had the AFC package and this awesome theme music. The Michigan Wolverines won the national title that year. Every year since when NBC o longer had thew AFC, Michigan has never won even a Big Ten title without losing at least 3 games. I expect Michigan to have their best year since 1997 in 2016.
I can reply now. We finally had great seasons in 2021 and 2022 especially 2022. Winning Big Ten titles both years and going 12-2 and 13-1 and trips to CFP. We were oh so close in 2016 in a 50-50 spot. It was a long 5 year wait but it happened at last and then even better in 2022.
Correct. Though I did not like sports until the early 2000s, as an "'80s Baby" who grew up in the 1990s in an AFC market, this song became an indelible part of my childhood. It is still my favorite NFL TV theme of all time.
Randy Edelman composed the Last NFL on NBC Theme Song from 1995 to 1997. This was also the BGM of the Final NFL Season covered by GMA Network, Inc. under the auspices of Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc.
In a perfect world, Sunday NFL coverage would be split between CBS (with the Frankie Vinci theme song for Sunday games), FOX and NBC (with this music for the afternoon games). All 3 networks get a weekly 1 PM/4 PM doubleheader as well as a Thanksgiving Day matchup. NBC retains Sunday Night Football with the John Williams music package. ABC would get Monday Night Football back with Hank Williams Jr. doing his famous 'ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?' before each game. CBS retains Thursday Night Football aside from Thanksgiving Night, which will go to NBC. ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX would rotate airing the Super Bowl.
Here are the team records only for NBC games under this theme from 1995-1997 San Francisco 49ers: 4-0 Green Bay Packers: 6-1 Carolina Panthers: 5-1 Detroit Lions: 5-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 4-1 Dallas Cowboys: 5-2 Pittsburgh Steelers: 27-12 Chicago Bears: 4-2 New Orleans Saints: 4-2 Minnesota Vikings: 4-2 Kansas City Chiefs: 23-12 Denver Broncos: 24-13 New England Patriots: 23-15 Philadelphia Eagles: 3-2 Miami Dolphins: 18-15 Buffalo Bills: 18-15 Houston/Tennessee Oilers: 13-13 Houston, 6-7 Tennessee, 19-20 Total Jacksonville Jaguars: 20-23 Seattle Seahawks: 18-21 San Diego Chargers: 17-22 Washington Redskins: 2-3 Oakland Raiders: 12-20 Indianapolis Colts: 15-26 Cincinnati Bengals: 14-25 Cleveland Browns: 4-8 St. Louis Rams: 2-4 Atlanta Falcons: 2-4 Baltimore Ravens: 8-18 New York Jets: 11-28 New York Giants: 1-4 Arizona Cardinals: 1-4
No surprise the Arizona Cardinals are on the bottom of the list. What a pathetic organization before Larry Fitzgerald (and maybe Kurt Warner) showed up.
Although if you clicked on one of the alternate camera angles, you could see different areas of the stadium and the players warming up from both teams while this theme was playing. Brings back so many great memories to watch players warming up while this great theme was playing. Also, about 15-30 minutes before the Cowboys-Packers game last season, even when on the broadcast cam, they showed some sideline reporter interview some Packer player while this theme was still playing in the background.
Yep, that's the one! I guess I haven't followed the Olympics quite as closely over the years. If you listen to the Brisco Country Jr. theme starting at around 0:20, and then listen to this one, it's virtually an identical chord progression...this one is just a faster tempo. Both are great themes.
I know that during the 2008 season, for Sunday Night Football online (Sunday Night Football Extra), they played this theme if you opened the feed prior to the start of the game. It wasn't the pregame show though they were showing unlike on the television broadcast. There were different camera angles you could click on. The broadcast cam just showed the Sunday Night football logo prior to the start of the game while this theme was playing.
Wolverine607, I feel your pain. As a young Lions fan in the 1990s, I just wanted Barry to win one so bad. Hearing this theme makes me want to cry, because this song was the glory days of the Lions. Ahh the good old days of the Lions are gone. Now as a grown man, i can't even watch them anymore, because 0-16 nearly broke my heart. All I wanted was to bring one Superbowl home. Thank you for uploading this, god bless you.
This theme was great but it seemed outdated even then to be honest. It also seemed out of place on regular season games aside from Thanksgiving. I wouldnt mind them using it for Thanksgiving, the playoffs and the Super Bowl, but it was never a great fit with a regular old Sunday game. Kind of in the same boat as Fox's orchestral baseball theme from 2007-2010 that they only used for the playoffs and All Star Game: it was epic but it would have been out of place on regular Saturday games
As a youngster at the time this theme would give me a raging boner from rapidly elevating my testosterone. It appears that decades later not much has changed. Please bring this back NBC.
I cannot even bare to watch college football and basketball anymore as bad as things have gotten with no hope in sight for basketball. Hearing this theme brings back great memories even more so now than ever because it was used by NBC during their NFL coverage during a time when I was actually proud to be a Michigan Wolverine and the hated Spartans and Buckeyes didn't own Michigan in both major sports,
NBC is using something very, very similar for the Olympics this year. It's not quite the same theme, but it's in the key of D and has the same chord progression. The Olympics are not as cool as Elway dueling against Jim Kelly or Marino airing it out against Harbaugh, but it definitely brought back some memories...
I always thought with this theme, it was the end of an era for NBC because they gave up rights to the AFC to CBS after the '97 season. Glad they have the Sunday Night game back and that theme's alright, just not the Faith Hill bit of it, but nothing beats this theme.
This is around the time I first got into the NFL really. I was only 11 at the time of Denver's first Super Bowl win but I remember staying up late for so many games during the 1997 season (I'm from the UK), and this theme just reminds of them great times for the Broncos. They will come again, no matter what happens in one season nobody can ever rule Denver out the next, and that's what I love about them. There will come a time when we are the top dog in the West again!
Indeed he was; personally, I think that when Enberg joined CBS Sports in 2000, they should have made him and Dan Dierdorf the #1 broadcasting team for CBS' NFL coverage as well and knocked Greg Gumbel and Phil Simms back to the #2 team. Better yet, I think that when CBS brought on Enberg, they also should have lured Paul Maguire over from ESPN and reunited him with Enberg and Simms to be CBS' #1 NFL broadcasting team and put Dan Dierdorf in with Greg Gumbel as the #2 team.
I so agree with you. The glory days of the Lions were when this theme song was played. And even those glory days were not that great as they could never win a playoff game and thus no Super Bowl. But they were light years ahead of what we have now. We used to be respectable. The last two times the Lions played in a game televised by NBC, they were victorious beating the Colts 32-10 and the Jets 13-10 and this great theme music was used.
Your right about the television broadcast. I was talking about Sunday Night Football online if the feed is opened prior to the start of the football game in 2008, this theme was played. Once the game started though, it was exactly the same as the television broadcast with the SNF theme music between commercials and during the intro. Sunday Night Football Online is coming back for 2009, and I was predicting they would do the same thing that they did in 2008.
+Matthew Behrman When FOX flat out stole the NFC from CBS, I knew things would never be the same. When NBC lost the NBA to ABC well ESPN I knew that the NBA wouldn't be as great and it hasn't. The NBA on ABC is horrible.
Yes, historically, this is correct. The old AFL was on NBC in the ‘60s, while CBS broadcasted the NFL as long as 📺 has been around. Super Bowl I was on both networks. At the 1970 merger, all old AFL teams joined the AFC, and the TV contract stayed with NBC until the 1997 season. Baseball had a similar setup: the AL played on ABC, the NL played on NBC, both leagues alternated World Series home field advantage annually, with the AL during odd-#’d years, airing on ABC, and the NL during even #’d years, airing on NBC.
Man I want FOX to get completely out of the NFL picture when the next TV contracts come up again and have either ABC or NBC takeover the NFC rights whoever doesn't get it gets Sunday Night Football.
Agreed Allen! The league and Goodell have embraced this change crap so much until, to the true fan, it's becoming oversaturated and watered down at the same time. Stadiums changing names to reflect corporate greed, rules changes that make no sense ( what is a catch?) , fantasy football, twitter accounts, and other bullshyt has just taken away the focus of what it's supposed to be. Put NBC, CBS and ABC back in the mix, stop with EVERYONE having turf and let's get back into the mud, and damn it, everything can't be pass interference!!!!
justinbig10 Yes it meant something with Football being on the original major 3 networks because of the talented play by play announcers and color commentators that the Big 3 had. I still don't consider FOX part of the Big 4. Oh and the catch rules are bullshit. It's a joke. ESPN has ruined Monday Night Football and they have pretty much ruined ABC. It's not ABC Sports anymore because ESPN controls every damn thing.
2022 is the next time that the tv contracts will come up for all five NFC, AFC and sunday night football, monday night football and now thursday night football. It could happen nothing's forever fox could drop out but fox has to much money to let that happen.
I hope the NFL's Sunday afternoon coverage is eventually similar to that of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Assuming CBS retains the AFC package, games would air on CBS, TBS, TNT, and TRUTV. If Fox keeps the NFC games, it would air on Fox, FS1, FS2, and FX. Imagine how much fun watching the NFL would be if they ever do this.
Yes RIP[ Dick Enberg. A great sportscaster and an even better person. He was an icon of my childhood with these awesome theme in the mid 1990s calling NFL games on NBC.
Man, Super XXXII was such a great one. Many of us though the Green Bay Packers were going to start a dynasty where they were going to go on a streak of winning a number of Super Bowls in a row. A player I have always loved and respected but unfortunately on the opposite end (Raiders fan and proud of it here) John Elway to me will always be one of the ultimate guys in the sport. As a football fan, Im glad he had his great moments. He went through the ups and the downs. Congrats to him!!!
I wish NBC would bring this theme song back for its NFL telecasts. A timeless, classic piece of music that evokes some great memories as a football fan.
This theme is such music to my ears. Brings back so many great memories even more so now than ever. The same time this theme was used by NBC for their NFL coverage was also the last time Michigan football and basketball were actually both good at the same time. Oh how times have changed for the worse. As a Michigan fan now, it couldn't be worse. Seeing hated MSU go to yet another Final Four while Michigan is bad in both football and basketball makes me sick to my stomach.
You know what, I DO actually miss this theme song on NBC's coverage of NFL Football in the mid late 1990's. I remember when I first started getting into football in my early pre-teens & this was a good theme, FOX was better of course but still.
@bakerandbaker1 I totally agree it should absolutely be used for something. Football Night in America may be a good idea. Or perhaps they should use it for their Saturday Wild Card day games as that really isn't SNF because it happens during the day. Also, I heard the new NBC Sports Network is going to have a morning NFL pregame show as part of the new NFL television package deal. Perhaps they could use this theme on NBC Sports Network for the morning pregame show.
If that Ravens-Steelers game had aired on Sunday afternoon like it was originally re-scheduled to, NBC would've had a really cheeky sense of humor to break this theme out. Oh well.
@DTownBBall07 Oh Yeah, I was so happy about the Sugar Bowl win. Brady Hoke did a great job with Michigan football turning them around after the mess Rich Rod left. And the future is so bright with Hoke and a great staff at the helm!! I am finally excited about Michigan football again!! And I sue do miss the 1995-97 NFL on NBC theme. It was a great one and wish NBC would use it for some sports telecast.
Unfortunately not....they will use the more up-to-beat SNF they used for Super Bowl XLIII.....it's not a bad theme....they should use this for bumper theme when commercial comes up.
Polskaman, Wolverine, I gotta respect you guys. True fans, willing to stick with your team through good and very, very, very awful. I feel for you guys, I really do. The Lions are the one team I sort of like in the NFC North. The one team I LOVE is the Bears, so we also know about trying times. But I always respect true fans.
This is so nostalgic. I heart this song! My fondest memory of this theme song is when I was 10 and/or 11 yrs. old. It was the Steelers vs. Colts. in the AFC Final... when the Steelers won after Jim Harbaugh's pass rolled off his receiver's chest and fell... incomplete. GO STEELERS!
Craizest part of that is the guy who dropped that pass in the AFC Championship, Aaron Bailey, played in NBC's final season with the AFC (1997 Colts), "final" (only) year broadcasting the XFL (Chicago Enforcers) and final year broadcasting the Arena League (2006 with the Grand Rapids Rampage)
@Wolverine607 no, it was probably when I watched the first broadcast. i think they were running promos before the first game that used the theme from pirates of the caribbean.
@dayungunna Now that I think of it, I am not sure that would have really happened because if you remember, Green Bay blew out Denver in the 1996 regular season. Also, I think Denver learned a lot from that loss and came back the following season as a much tougher and more battle tested team for the playoffs. They were a different team a year later and more playoff ready and thus won 2 straight Super Bowls.
This theme is ok, but I like the new NBC football theme better...In my opinion NBC has used some of the best sports theme songs of all time...Roundball Rock and the NHL theme are awesome as well...

That was Randy Edelman who composed this "NFL on NBC" theme.
Now I'll admit it not Gridiron Dreams but its very underrated
Just realized that. After all these years...lol

You know what NBC should do one Sunday night, have a throwback telecast. Have original graphics and theme for just one evening. They could use this theme or another theme and have the graphics from that era. That would be awesome to watch.
Richard Gustason That would be awesome. I bet it would attract millions of NFL viewers as a way to remind them of the modern day NFL.
Their mid-70s theme was pretty awesome, too-- and surprisingly timeless.
ESPN actually did this in select games in 2003-2004.
That would be great. The old 70's intro. Then the disco theme from the 1980 and 1981 seasons. Maybe some "Send Them Victorious", which they sadly only used in 1985 (my first year watching the NFL as a kid), and of course, this theme.
I mean, they already do it for NASCAR, and ESPN will probably do it for opening night of the NHL's new contract next season, why not?
I wish nbc could use this old theme on Thanksgiving.
that would be really cool as a throwback touch....

Carrie Underwood is cheesy as her bulletproof makeup.

Tyler Nersinger bro that’s exactly what I said but in way less words.
I was a huge fan of the “Pots and Pans” theme CBS used. Very underrated
Agreed!!
I really love FOX's NFL theme song. I also love this theme song. They are both great NFL themes. Two of the best themes ever.
As a Steelers fan this is the song of 90s disappointments
Why the hell didn't NBC go back to this theme?! Much better than the Carrie Underwood song they got now.
The Carrie Underwood theme is awful
You can NOT beat a classic! I so wish like many others they would return to this to intro football games.....please!
I believe it the most beautiful NFL theme ever.
Correct. Though I did not like sports until the early 2000s, as an "'80s Baby" who grew up in the 1990s in an AFC market, this song became an indelible part of my childhood. It is still my favorite NFL TV theme of all time.
"This one's for John!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I wish they’d use this for their new Big Ten Coverage
Randy Edelman composed the Last NFL on NBC Theme Song from 1995 to 1997. This was also the BGM of the Final NFL Season covered by GMA Network, Inc. under the auspices of Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc.
He also did the theme for the 1985-92 ABC/Paramount TV series "MacGyver"!
ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX would rotate airing the Super Bowl.
that could be Good Idea
NBC would get all the inter conference matches, CBS all AFC, FOX all NBC. NBC would get a triple header every third week.
Brings back so many Memories 😎👍🏾
Who wouldn't want to see a revamp of this season for the 2019 season (which so happens to be the NFL's 100th season)

Hero.
@BrutalA Master He said it was only for games broadcast on NBC; were all 48 of those games on NBC?
@@kjuergens1985 6 of those games were on Fox, 6 were on ABC, 2 on TNT, and 1 on ESPN.
No surprise the Arizona Cardinals are on the bottom of the list. What a pathetic organization before Larry Fitzgerald (and maybe Kurt Warner) showed up.
Packers vs Broncos Sept 22 2019. One of the best Super Bowls ever back on Sunday January 25 1998 San Diego
Hello everyone Dick Enberg with Phil Simms and Paul maguire
this takes me back when i was 6 when this theme came out
Damn. took me back to Super Bowl XXX when the cowboys won it that year!
This theme is s*itting on the new theme! They need to bring this one back! For old times sake! #90'sbabyspaeaking
Love it. Rest in peace to my uncle. A big Vikings fan
NFL football isn't as good as it used to be.
Most things aren't as good as they used to be. Thank millennials and social media for screwing everything up.
Happy retirement Mr. Enberg!
This was amazing!
NBC should play this theme for the Stanley Cup Playoffs/Final. Captures the excitement and emotion of playoff hockey.
eh, this sounds more like a "football" type theme. tough and rough, yet amazing and sports fanatic
Actually, mrmajikjr, this is an HQ (Higher Quality) version, that's why it sounds so weird to some people.
I cannot even bare to watch college football and basketball anymore as bad as things have gotten with no hope in sight for basketball.
Hearing this theme brings back great memories even more so now than ever because it was used by NBC during their NFL coverage during a time when I was actually proud to be a Michigan Wolverine and the hated Spartans and Buckeyes didn't own Michigan in both major sports,
This sounds like a good theme for baseball to me ---- lots of tradition, apple pie, etc.
That gives me chills. Broncos super bowl years! Sounds special on super bowl Sunday.
Dick Enberg was the best announcer for both the NFL and NBA on NBC.
Oh, My. He was.
+Peter Bautista the games would be so much better with enberg, Maguire. also jay Randolph & don crique
theme bring back memories of sundays with my brothers wacthing nbc
What a great piece. "The AFC (AFL) on NBC". Too bad Rupert Murdoch and Fox had to show up and screw things up. Now they have golf, too. Ugh.
+chakett76 actually to me FOX stole the NFC rights from CBS and this how we got here today!
CBS should get the NFC back and NBC gets back the AFC. Also ABC gets back Monday Night Football.
RIP Dick Enberg
NBC should use this theme again!
You know what, I DO actually miss this theme song on NBC's coverage of NFL Football in the mid late 1990's. I remember when I first started getting into football in my early pre-teens & this was a good theme, FOX was better of course but still.
This theme was cool!
I want this back.
I remember this theme. I like it, but always thought that it sounds more Olympics than football.
@bakerandbaker1
I totally agree it should absolutely be used for something. Football Night in America may be a good idea. Or perhaps they should use it for their Saturday Wild Card day games as that really isn't SNF because it happens during the day.
Also, I heard the new NBC Sports Network is going to have a morning NFL pregame show as part of the new NFL television package deal. Perhaps they could use this theme on NBC Sports Network for the morning pregame show.
majestic theme
I started getting into football while this theme was being used and BOY does hearing this bring back fond memories... *sigh* U_U
If that Ravens-Steelers game had aired on Sunday afternoon like it was originally re-scheduled to, NBC would've had a really cheeky sense of humor to break this theme out.
Oh well.
Mute your TV and play this during Carrie Underwood. It's a much better way to start a game.
@DTownBBall07
Oh Yeah, I was so happy about the Sugar Bowl win.
Thanks, but as soon as I noticed it too, I already adjusted the volume on the copy I had with some audio editing software.
What a great announcer Dick Enberg was for NBC for many years!!!
I would love the NFL to go back to somewhat of a new/old tradition when the next tv deals are being negotiated
If you go onto nbc sports online, i believe they still play this theme during the pregame show for sunday night football
Dick Enberg Randy Cross the list goes on of some of the greatest NFL announcers ever ❤
love this theme, brings me back to 95
This brings me back to when the Denver Broncos ruled the football world at the end of the century
@Wolverine607 no, it was probably when I watched the first broadcast. i think they were running promos before the first game that used the theme from pirates of the caribbean.
NBC Sports is bringing back Sunday Night Football online for the 2009 regular season. Hopefully they use this theme again. I think they will.
@dayungunna
Now that I think of it, I am not sure that would have really happened because if you remember, Green Bay blew out Denver in the 1996 regular season. Also, I think Denver learned a lot from that loss and came back the following season as a much tougher and more battle tested team for the playoffs. They were a different team a year later and more playoff ready and thus won 2 straight Super Bowls.
OMG. I never thought this day would come. The NFL on NBC theme in high quality! Please, you must send me this file!
Wow! This brings back some great memories! They should bring this back! Long time Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks fan!!!
makes me think of Super Bowl XXX
This theme is ok, but I like the new NBC football theme better...In my opinion NBC has used some of the best sports theme songs of all time...Roundball Rock and the NHL theme are awesome as well...
