- Midnight’s Edge is teaming up with Gary J. Tunnicliffe to give you the detailed behind the scenes history of the Hellraiser franchise, from the mainstream highs of «Hellraiser III», and the production troubles on «Hellraiser: Bloodline», to the lowest points of the direct to video releases Inferno, Hellseeker, Deader and Hellworld. No holds will be barred.
Gary J. Tunnicliffe is the writer and director of «Hellraiser: Judgment». Outside of his long involvement with the Hellraiser franchise, dating back to 1992, Tunnicliffe has worked on numerous other films and franchises, such as Blade, Dracula, Halloween, Candyman, Scream, Mimic, and the Exorcist, as well as standalone movies like Olympus has Fallen and Gone Girl to name but a few.
This is Part I of the Talking Hellraiser series, in which Gary shares how he became involved with the franchise, and his take on what transpired behind the scenes of all the original movies starring Doug Bradley as the iconing Pinhead, The Hell Priest.

Ive just watched "Leviathan A Hellraiser story" documentary...This video is 100 Times better.
Leviathan: The story of Hellraiser and Hellbound is an excellent documentary.
So is Never Sleep Again, Crystal Lake Memories, and Halloween: The Complete Franchise story. Between the 4 is over 20 hours of everything you need to know about the 4 franchises. And all are available free on YT✌
This was an eye opening interview
@marobot.. ty i just lookd it up it's like almost 5 hrs long now i don't expect you to reply back but i do want to personally Thank you.. god bless..
Cenobites being created from victims was pretty dumb. They never opened the box. They weren't looking for anything. I always thought of the cenobites as the ultimate "careful what you wish for" kind of job. But, as a 12 year old, it was pretty awesome to see new Cenobites created.
This channels gets better and better. Love this inside into our favourite movies. Thank you for that.
The FX for Inferno were so impressive and memorable
This was fantastic, can't wait for Part 2. In depth discussion of these sequels which have such varying results is welcomed so much. I hear enough about popular classics that I'm done hearing about it. Give me more of stuff like this. And hats off to Gary Tunnicliffe for sticking with it through thick and thin.
I've always loved the Hellraiser movies, and wanted to learn more about the history behind them. I was so thrilled to see this vid, especially from Midnights Edge!! Hellraiser really moved me to wanting to write and has changed my life. When I preordered Judgement it came in early, and once I watched it I could tell it was made with love for the series, despite being radically different. I looked more into the director beforehand and found he made a fan film and worked on previous films. This video really opened up the details about it all and showed he really cared for the series. Excited for parts 2 and 3!!
I'm liking this new intro music
Hey this is an absolutely fantastic video. Good work.
This is goes down as one the best interviews about the Hellraiser franchise.
For Real though, dawg.
Finished Judgement and immediately watched it again. Great to see this franchise getting back on track. Bring on more!
This was a really great interview. So many interviewers interrupt their subject; thank god you don't do that. Hence, we got a good one. Thanks.
Midnights Edge keeps getting bigger and better. I would love to see you guys do more stuff on various horror movies
Hellraiser Judgement: - 8/10
Best since HR2. Well done Gazza, keep them coming.
This is awesome! Thank you so much for this video!
the new Pinhead looks a lot better than the Revelations Pinhead
thank you for sharing
Excellent episode guys!
This is awesome! Can’t wait to pick this up, where I’m pausing now, after work
Wow, this is great!
Yet another awesome review guys love the behind the scenes information I've learned from this keep up with the amazing work 👍
When you reach the end of the video, and you realize that you have to wait for Part 2! Noooooooo!
and 3...(plugging ears)
Midnight's Edge After Dark YEAH!!!!
Yes Gary was very generous talking with us for over 6 hours about so much great Hellraiser stuff, we had to share as much as possible with you guys :)
Inferno was great. Its my favourite after the Hellraiser 1 & 2. I also love the comics based on Hellraiser and they are very creative and strange and yes Pinhead is rarely in them. Inferno fits in well with the comic stories where its more about the characters and the story. If you rewatch Hellraiser 1 Pinhead is hardly in it because he was never the focus of the story. Its us, the fans, that made him the focus and thus any future movie put more Pinhead.
I'm so glad to see some love for Inferno, it is one of my favourites (after the first and second, and maybe now the 10th). I never go back to Hell on Earth, but Inferno I have seen multiple times.
For what it's worth, as someone who distinctly recalls not liking Inferno, here's my take. Inferno recharacterizes the Cenobites as entities of psychological torture. E.g., the film has a strong Jacob's Ladder vibe. That struck me as a big change, and one that I think is less interesting, or at least less unique in a horror flick context, than their original very flesh-oriented, corporeal angle. I have not rewatched it in the intervening years, but that's my recollection.
Completely agree! I never understood the hate for it, I loved it as well as Hellbound.
Awesome, by the way. That's a dream come true!
It's great to get an in-depth, behind-the-scenes chat about the movie franchise from an insider and kudos to Gary's commitment as a fan, through think and thin, sticking with the series; 'from a fan, for the fans' as it were.
I know it's not saying much, but Judgement is the best Hellraiser since Bloodline (AGAIN... doesn't say much lol).
This is awesome. Wanna see more like this.
This was great and very insightful! I echo the sentiments of the line "I grew up liking Hellraiser 3 but when I grew up, I saw all the flaws in it."
So informative and full of interesting detail about the backstory of this franchise. To be honest, I've only seen the first film and still need to complete watching the sequel. Man, who know they were still making entries in this series! I need to check them all out!
Fantastic interview!!! I loved every minute of this!
I could watch making of's,interviews.behind the scenes all day long...this one is in my top ten best...awesome to undersrand more...."we must devote our lives and energies to go in further....we have to see we have to know...."
Hellraiser has 10 sequels?? Holy shit😳😳
BLVCK Atlantian actually it has 9 sequels.
"sequels" is debatable :P
Only've seen a few mins for now, looks good but for that extra 1h+ will most probably have to wait until sunday. Keep up the good work ME!
Good interview.
Was surprised to see the black and white pic of Barry Norman on set with Doug in Pinhead costume.
Very interesting! Thanks.
Gary's "holy wars" pitch is pretty much what they did on the 2008 film martyrs. Shame such a good idea!
Only ever seen the first film. But this makes me want to check out the rest.
By now you probably figured out that the series drives of a cliff after Hellraiser 2.
Wow... quickest hour n 20 mins ever! Onto part 2
Watching Jaws after editing movies made me appreciate it a lot more, not less
This isn't really behind the scenes this is more of a documentary director commentary.
holy shit!!! dont know how I ended up here but whatever! this is awesome!!
Be sure to check out the follow-up videos.
I would love to see you guys interview Doug Bradley somewhere down the road.
Can't deny that the Motorhead song isn't cool.
I really like Inferno the most of all the Hellraiser films for its themes.
38:30 Gary, check out my viper Kung fu, it’s wing chun for jkd.. love the interview and your work.. fascinating
Garry's re'sume' is very impressive.
New line would've been a better owner for the Hellraiser franchise
This guy Gary who made Revelations I think is pretty fuckin awesome. The movie may not be perfect but you have to admit its a big, BIG step in the right direction for the Hellraiser series.
If it wasn't for Gary, I dont think we'd be getting the new Hellraiser HBO series and brand new movie thats coming out in the future. Revelations had a big part in "reopening" the market for the Hellraiser series.
We need a video game based on the movies in VR or regular format for nextgen
I really like part 5,6 and 7
I understand the stick that 5 gets. About ten years ago I watched the first 8 virtually back to back, after discovering that there were more than 3. I'd only previously seen 1 and 3. 5 seemed a bit cheap from a story point of view. What I don't understand is why 6 doesn't get the same criticism or worse, as to me it seemed to be a retelling of 5, and even less imaginative. I don't really remember 7 at all. I do remember 8, trying to unify the Hellraiser concept with the 90s teen slasher successes, and I would say I definitely enjoyed watching it, without ever going as far as calling it a good film.
One of my favourite horror films and a franchise that deserves a reboot, especially after that latest turd.
25:58 New Line had a chance to buy Hellraiser (which would've given us one of the original Freddy VS Jason endings involving them being greeted in Hell by Pinhead) and yet they didn't take it?! Oh well, Freddy VS Jason VS Ash is still better anyway
Yeah, I had a bit about the original idea for the ending of FvJ featuring Pinhead in our recent Friday the 13th Mini-Documentary, but it was sacrificed for time and relevance. (-Tom)
I agree with everything except the Motörhead take. Motörhead is baller
44:00 yea groups that excommunicate members dont get those back easily....
To be fair, I loved Hellraiser 3. I am a horror purist, my horror has to be serious, bleak, gory and definitely without cheesy one liners or dialogue so Nightmare on Elm Street is right out..sorry fans....
Hell on earth is just this side of acceptable.
I agree with Doug Bradley though. Every fan wants to see lots more Pinhead and the Hell Priests! Although, I actually really like Judgement! The only problem I have with Judgement is Pinheads voice and the lame clothing the Angel wore. Other than that I loved Judgement!
West Midlands rule! More Brits please!
Gary seems like a very nice person, but he's not exactly doing the franchise justice by creating sequels with such a poor budget and a rushed script, I would rather just let the license expire from Dimension Films because they are to blame for all the terrible sequels..
HumanIce SC State several times though if he didn't do it it would be somebody else, and we seen how Revelations turned out and some of the other sequels. If you've had a chance to see judgement at least you can see through the low-budget and see how much Gary truly loves the franchise
Nicely done However, twice you misidentified Chris Figg in the same photo. The photo you show is of Clive Barker and a British reviewer who gave the first Hellraiser a nasty review. The photo is of Clive and the snobby reviewer on the set of Hellraiser 2.
Wouldn't be surprised if Tunnicliffe had a turn on Weinstein's couch..
Inferno was just decent. I wish it was better cause it had potential, but I enjoyed it to an extent.
The insistence of shitting out half-hearted trash in order to retain rights is so disrespectful and gross.
Hellraiser and Halloween have the worst batch of sequel's and that's a shame as they are the most interesting icons imo
Hellraiser 3 was the weakest theatrical release out of the four...I still enjoy it though cuz Pinhead really shines for the first time
I respect all the hard work put into the movie Gary, but with all due respect Hellraiser Judgement was the most cringy movie I have ever seen and definitely will be remembered as the worst entry in the franchise. I could not believe how bad it was. :(
Why not make Pin-head female.
That way, there will be no comparison with Doug Bradley.
Also -if I remember correctly, the lead cenobite was female |
in the Hellraiser Heart short story it was based on.
That's my suggestion for a remake, too (-Tom)
I think that opens up an angle to take the "pain is close to pleasure" trope to the next level in respect sensuality & sexuality
Jaimy van der Horst
"Hellbound Heart"...
And yes, the lead cenobite was androgynous with the voice of an excited little girl.
That would have been so much better honestly. The ideas of sensuality and experience have really been lost since the end of Hellraiser 2, would have loved female hell priest
Hellraiser "judgement" i kno didn't hve doug in it now let me ask all you "REal Horror fans out there was the remake of 2010's "a nightmare on elm st w/jackie earl hailey good? Fuck nooo Robert Englund is Freddy right so my point is when you make a film w/out the original star it lacks in ticket sales, fans are dissappointed and we expect the same formula its like switching from mtn dew {my fav soda lol} to mtn lightning {dollar store brand not bad but yea..}.. i Am a Tru Horror fan your talking to someone who actually thought "the exorcist was a comedy i laughed my ass off and i was six yrs old.. lmaooooooo...
I hate it when they change so much and then go on to say fake shit like "Hey finally something new!" if you wanted to do something new than don't do a Hellrasier Film goddammit. Just Look at what happened to Jason goes to hell!? smh stupid.
In Hell on earth Theres no hell at all. Instead we have shitty movie with Some parodies of cenobites like Mustache camera cenobite. 1000 cringe
short version : gary tunnicliffe has been involved with all the shit sequels
He sucks for doing the special effects and trying to influence the direction in a better direction even though he didn’t have direct influence over the movies?
Dead is better.
2 classics...2 cheesy..no more.
Right... because anyone should take any advice from the Weinstein's.
5-10 are all terrible films. Wasted opportunities!! The last 2 are the worst!!
This guy literally makes 50k rights retainer movies, and gets butt hurt when people don't like them and tries to make out they are still good...
They are not good. Every hellraiser after 1+2 are literally terrible cringe fests. Everyone knows that. This guy trying to defend them is just cringe.
And judgement was just a dreadfully boring movie 😴
Hell on earth is was of the worst,5 way better
Every film after two was shit. Let's not pretend any of them after were any good.
Inferno.
This video was fantastic! As a rather large fan of the Hellraiser series, it's great to hear an extended interview with the man who more or less has been the gatekeeper of the franchise for quite awhile now. I've not had the chance to watch Judgement yet, but I have high hopes for it just knowing it was made by someone who genuinely believed in and cared about the franchise and story. Can't wait for parts two and three!
Waking up and seeing an hour and 20 minute special on Hellraiser which is also only part 1 is so freaking awesome. I'm really looking forward to this I love Hellraiser and Clive Barker and thank you guys for what I'm sure is to be a great video. By the way I love that new intro music😉
Thanks! Get ready for a hell of an interview, there is a lot more to come!
Oddball WHY THE FOCK DON'T THEY JUS MAKE A hell raiser ANIME WHY !!!!!!!!!!
Mr.h has a 3 hour interview with this guy. I have had 4 hours of hellraiser interviews this week with him alone.
Damn, if you have to watch Full Metal Jacket or The Shining 4-5 times to realize they're amazing, I don't know what to say. Maybe stick with make-up then, not writing/directing.
I wonder if Guillermo del Toro would be a good director for a Hellraiser movie
Yes he woukd but his fee is more than any Hellraisers sequel (post2000) budget. Unless they do a big budget remake i dont think it would happen. We can hope an prey but hellraiser is the nost fumbled an fucked up franchise in horror history. Pinheads potential was never reached as the film company just fucked up every step of his journey
Yes. Indeed I think he would
No he would be shit . This movie needs freedom and a director with a reputation won’t do it justice or take risks
Scott Derrickson or Alex Proyas
No!
I liked Hellraiser 3, It's underrated for me and to me. It's not talked about as much as one of the best next to the first two. through 4 and up suck ass.
Aimee Leigh sounds like a sweetheart.
Tunnicliffe is quoted in Scream magazine as saying that he "doesn't care what the fans think" about Judgement. Why should we care about this interview then.
Waaaaahhh😢😢😢
Stop pouting and go make one.
Yet we are here
I swear this guy dosent like anything hes ever worked on I don't know why he even did them
Experience is experience man, there are a lot of industries that involve art where if you refuse to work on something you don't absolutely love, you won't be getting work at all. There are a lot of talented creatives who need to make a living. Not every painter loves the work they're commissioned to do, not every music producer loves the bands they've worked with etc
Terry Farrell is my friend. She is my new friend. She was playing Joey Summerskill in Hellraiser 3 but she was in Star Trek Deep Space Nine after Hellraiser 3 when Rick Berman was casting Terry as Jadzia Dax.
This is a bit late, but I actually love Inferno, even if it is so different from the others.
Great interview! Thoughtful questions and insightful answers. I’m also really impressed by the accompanying visual aides here. I enjoyed *watching* it, almost as much as I liked listening.
Also, If you liked this, I highly recommend Finding “Building the Beast” by the writer of Hellraiser I-IV.
No Doug Bradley......No Hellraiser imo
There hasn't been a decent Hellraiser movie since Hellbound: Hellraiser II.
Hellraiser Inferno...
Meh....Hellseeker was lame
Bloodline was good. I loved the "Princess" Angelique story line...and how she tried to double cross Pin Head.
Gary sounds like a good dude and a great fan, but I get the impression as the podcast went on that maybe he's compromised more than he really should have at times.
There's a bit of a difference between doing your job and rocking the boat when it's not worth it in the long run. Like Stan Lee, it seems like Gary kept his head down, did his job, avoided needless confrontation and just waiting for his moment for his inner fan to get to do his own thing, and if you have seen Judgement, it is a true labor of love to Hellraiser fans by a Hellraiser fan. Considering how often he worked on the franchise for free shows.
@MonkeyZorr If you can afford to fund your own film, don't be a yes man.
Fantastic stuff guys. Cheers all around.
full metal jacket was great
I watched HELL ON EARTH a lot as a kid for one reason: Paula Marshall.
Goddamn, she is hot in that movie! And she still looks amazing.
Hellraiser 2 was almost destroyed by a shady producer and studio intervention. That's why the last 30 minutes are so fractured and the Leviathan end scene was so short and low quality. The 1st Hellraiser was cut down massively by the prude and frigid MPAA. Hollywood was always massively opposed to Hellraiser even existing.
Hellraiser III is still shit. I was hoping a new viewing would be fun, but it does indeed get worse with each viewing. Also, your "deleted scene from Hellraiser II" is not from footage. It is a still image. Not from any footage. The scene was never filmed.
53:16 that’s a great movie. Part 5 inferno is straight trust me I’m a top fanatic..
I'm in love with the newest addition to the hellraiser world, the Auditor! :)
We are going to cover him in detail in the THIRD Hellraiser video with Gary;p
Mr. Tunnicliffe sounds and feels like a very passionate and enthusiastic person. It's a real pleasure to hear what he has to say, and I salute his dedication.
Judgement has surprisingly turned out to be my favourite sequel since Hellbound, most likely due to all the love put into it by that wondeful man.
54:57 I am no sheep; I didn't like it.
These interviews are excellent. Its really sad what happened to the franchise. Yes, Inferno was decent. But most of the sequels don't even feel like part of the same world as the first two. And what is the weird obsession with making these movies detective/ mystery stories? It doesn't fit and is a very weird choice. I wish Dimension would lose the rights so maybe someone would put more money into one. Get Barker and Bradley back for one final, real, Hellraiser movie.
this is a brilliantly made video with the interview so thank you for all the editing and hard work.....nice job....i loved watching it! one thing tho.....hellworld is no where near as bad a movie as you were shitting on it.....its got kathryn winnick running around in tight leather pants so come on dudes....wtf....i love kari but goddam deader is boring as fuck
I started at 2 went to 3 and back to 1 , the aim an interview was not lost.
What I did see was a man that loved Bakers vision. I was out after the third installment , my star wars as a horror fan , but now I feel I must go back and look at evolution thru a fans eyes that got to create
