- Police body camera footage shows the interaction between Chattanooga officer Cody Thomas and Nate Carter on April 13, 2018.
Thomas arrived at Vance Street looking for a man named "Polo" who had threatened a neighbor with a gun. But Carter said he wasn't Polo, wasn't involved and didn't want the officer on his property.
The interaction is now the subject of a lawsuit filed Monday , April 1, 2019, charging unreasonable use of a stun gun and false arrest.
This cop is a danger to society. He needs to be arrested and charged.
He's already part of another lawsuit for searching a couples house without a warrant. He and several other officers raided the couple's home at gunpoint and searched it, but didn't bother getting a warrant. Maybe they need to change the leadership. They only suspended him for 2 weeks for this misconduct. He should have been fired for lying on a sworn affidavit! He can't be trusted. He wanted to use his gun, either in the dog it the man. It didn't matter to him. He doesn't see these citizens as people. He sees them as subjects who need to obey his every unlawful command. He definitely escalated the situation when he said you're in it now. He was looking for action. The sad part is, they didn't go after the man with the gun!
an absolute menace. not only did he assault and violate the rights of a random innocent person but he completely abandoned the call he was sent for and wasted all those resources just because he felt disrespected by the guys response and wanted to be a big tough guy
That cop caused all of that.
at the end he tries to act like it was a mistaken identity and even blames it on the caller. But at :38 it's abundantly clear that his actions towards the man were about the perceived disrespect from that man, which interrupted the cops attempt at confirming whether or not he was the suspect. the cop never bothered to make that determination once he decided he needed to respond to the disrespect like a big tough guy for his own ego, nothing else mattered to him at that point.

How is that officer not fired? I read his sworn report and he purposely left out key facts and lied about the "suspect" having something hidden behind his back, then running (he walked) into his house to get ANOTHER GUN. Suggesting he had a gun the entire time they talked. He was mad that the man told him he wasn't involved and to go over there. So, he determined this man was going to jail no matter what. He tased him, threatens to shoot his tied up dog, (which he left out) and pulled a gun and threatened to shoot him(which he leaves out). Not only is this officer trigger happy, he's a liar and ready to kill someone for getting his mail. For him to just get a 2-week suspension is a crime, especially since he was involved in an illegal raid and search on an innocent couple's home without a warrant. There are two lawsuits involving Cody Thomas. How much more money do the tax payers need to shell out for his misconduct before you wake up and realize he is not fit to be a peace officer anywhere! He should never have a job where he has authority over others and definitely never carry a gun. Just because you have a gun and a badge doesn't mean the laws don't apply to you!

Jesus. LEOs are taught to DEescalate. This went from zero to multi-million dollar lawsuit in 10 seconds. This man deserves every penny he gets.
Oh it happens. One moment your just living life. Next thing your rights are violated and your sleeping on a concrete floor in overcrowded jails with no concern for your person. The police purposely tried to demean and embarass people in jail. They cuss you up and down, threaten with violent measures and obviously dont care to shoot animals. They make up rules out of the blue and are looking for a reason to fight or draw a wepon.

Now to be fair the video is edited. Maybe there was a miscommunication. And yes if a firearm was possible take precautions. But it seemed he just went full asshole on this man with little reason.
It seemed as tho he knew at first this was NOT the guy. Because he said "come here your part of this now". Meaning the man was not at first ? So he isnt the droid your looking for. Lets taze him anyways.
The hamilton county jail also apparently has decided that embroidering "BOOTY" ON THE BUTT OF THEIR ORANGE JUMPSUITS would be a funny way to demean the inmates. This is true words witnessed firsthand .
They also purposely try their best to make anyone in the jail as uncomfortable as possible.
There is no respect for the community.
Once again to be fair, it seems there are more than a few making the ones who are truly good overshadowed by a distaste for their methods of operation.
Ill probably catch charges for making this post. I personally have already been harassed by them multiple times for no reason. They need more structure and consiquences for their inappropriate actions when commited.

@TheMightyPH - The officer threatened him with false arrest and threatened a retaliatory killing of his pets. You absolutely have the right to take any steps necessary to protect yourself from an LEO who is behaving unlawfully.
@TheMightyPH Yes you do. The Supreme Court ruling in John Bad Elk still stands. And if you're a victim of excessive force, there's a chance you won't live to see court. There is no reason to believe a power-tripping officer will suddenly behave lawfully once you're in custody.
The main problem with police officers starts with the people that are hired to be police officers. They fall into 2 categories: Bullies and Bullied. We need psychological testing for anyone wanting to be a cop. If they show signs of falling into either of the 2 categories I listed, they shouldn't get hired and should be barred from EVER being in a position of authority. When background checks are made, school info on wether they were bullies/bullied should be accessible and looked at.

Both are at fault here but the officer is the one who was supposed to remain professional. He escalated the event, which prompt the other guy to start acting worse. The guy, however, did prompt the officer, it's just the officer shouldn't have escalated. It's obvious he's inexperienced, from what I can see though the PD is going to lose this suit. The video is on the black guys side.
The man did NOTHING WRONG. The Supreme Court has ruled that people don't have to show any verbal deference to cops. He was on his own property. This sort of nonsense would never happen in an affluent neighborhood where people have money for good lawyers.

Neither individual de escalated properly. Citizen was obstinate and rude, officer ego was bruised and it showed. Officer should have taken some time to calm down before making decision.

Where is the tackle? I saw a circle take down that was pretty non violent. Also the video edited for “ time” isn’t the whole context. The officer gave him a command that was lawful he refused and tried to leave.
The officer told him he was going to arrest him because he started yelling at the cop. You can't arrest someone for being disrespectful to a police officer....and that's just the beginning of the police officer's lies and abuse of power.
