Colin you have been a great help to me , your instruction is excellent.I have tried to learn the banjo from video and books, which proved to be to hard to grasp.I wish I could go to some of you classes but unfortunately the bus trip from North East of England would take to long.😀 Hope you carry on with your workshops on Utube..Henry Borland stockton on tees England
Colin Bazsali There's always been interest in banjo music over here, as if there wasn't, we wouldn't have had guys like Gerry O'Connor, who plays the tenor banjo but adds old time/bluegrass influences, or George Formby with his banjolele (banjo-ukelele) etc, or British/Irish classical banjo music composers.
I you could post Shady Grove that would be great for me. This is the first song I have tried in this tuning. I'm a guitar play that's trying to pickup the banjo. They are very different. thanks Brian
Very well done. Thank you so much. I think you did a great save when you got lost on the words. That to me is the sign of a good musician. I'd have flat out stopped!
Hi Colin! I'm learning clawhammer and I'm hooked to your videos, you're a wonderful teacher! I was wondering if you could do the dark holler blues by Clarence Ashley - couldn't find it anywhere and if it was done by anyone i'd rather it be you:) Thank you for your help all the way from Spain. Maika
Woah just learned this song and posted in double C tuning. Then I saw this which is weird cause I go to Madison College but had no idea they taught 5-string banjo
Colin Bazsali Well I pretty much always stay in double C so If it's possible to play something in that tuning that's what I will learn as I don't want to avoid my band-mates by retuning all the time. Also double C capo 2 gives me DA and E strings like on my tenor so it's very easy for me to figure out melodies.
Great! I'll look out for you. I'm in the Barley Brothers (old time) and the Cajun Strangers. Funny how the different ethnic genres don't mix all that much.
I don't live near Madison College. I fact I live on Vancouver island on the west coast of Canada. Is there any way for me to access the tabs for this course? I love your lessons. I hope to get the hang of this style one day.
I like fretless banjos. I used to have a fretless from Bart Reiter, and it was wonderful. If all you want to play is clawhammer, then a fretless is a great old-time banjo to have. I sold mine, though, because I like to also play 3-finger chordal styles, which don't work so well on a fretless. I don't have a favorite style or tuning. I just use whatever works for the song I'm playing. If I had to choose, it would be gCDBD, the so-called classical tuning, where you play chords. It's very versatile. But the great thing about banjos, you don't have to limit yourself to one tuning!
Best clawhammer lessons on youtube man thank you!
Thank you!
Someday I hope to be able to drop thumb. Beautiful session man, thank you for sharing.
Thank you! I don't want to put up tabs for all of them. But if there is one or two that you're interested in, I can see if I can post it.

Thanks, Henry! I'm glad to hear that there's some interest in old-time banjo in England.

+mamkmc That's a good idea. I love that one, although I never really learned it. Maybe someday! Thanks for your nice comments!
This is managable in standard tuning, just anchor your index finger on the first fret of the second string and let it ring.
thank u great teacher!!

I teach through the Continuing Education department, so you wouldn't have seen it in the regular course schedules. I never saw it in double C. Nice!

What band are you in?
Bi Dana, Irish Traditional music. We play every fourth Sunday at the Brocach and Irish music festivals.

Awesome!
Colin, thank you for the music. How can I get the tabs for Deep Blue sea and Shady Grove? Can't say thank you enough. Shoemaker from Olympia, Wa.
I wonder if Pete Seeger every wrote we the tabs to sally ann?
Michael Shoemaker
I'm shite at reading tabs so I learn by ear.
Colin Bazsali I am wondering sir what is your opinion of frettless Banjo and do you have a favorite picking style and Tuning?

Sure! You'll find a link to the tabs in Google Docs in the description above. Have fun!
