Hilarie, thank you, really. I don't know what you do but it's magical, thanks to you I just learnt the melody in 15 mins after over a month of frustration!
I'm so glad! Thanks for letting me know it's useful. I do have TONS of newer videos available on my prescription Patreon site; access to all of them costs $4/month :-) it's at www.patreon.com/hilarieburhans if you're interested in checking it out.
Hi Hilarie, I follow your lessons and have gone from complete newbie to playing a few songs thanks to you. I would like to ask you to comment on which finger is best for striking with the right hand. The index seems more accurate, but the middle seems more natural when returning to an immediate "ditty". Thanks.
I use my index for the first and second strings, generally, and my middle for the 4th string. Ish. Sometimes I use my middle for every string. My suggestion is to use whatever finger feels right to you :-)
I'm trying hard to figure out this clawhammer stuff. It looks like the basic right hand technique is this: play the melody with downstrokes, middle finger--then bum ditty with a downstroke on bottom strings, and fifth string. Is that basically it?
John Wilson well, the "bum" is generally a downward stroke hitting a melody note (while the thumb comes down simultaneously and silently on the 5th string. The hand then bounces up/out again, and comes down for the "dit-" which is often sort of a downward brush. The "-ty" is made by the thumb, which has again come down to rest on the 5th string, this time pulling off on that string. I have a "basic bum ditty" video available to watch which might explain it more clearly
Yes, I've seen it. I'm working through all your videos, hoping to grasp the technique.from them. I'm kinda frustrated, cuz I've been trying so long. But I haven't given up yet. Now that I think about it--I understand your step-by-step description of a bum-ditty. The problem seems to be stringing them together--into several bum ditties...and working in the melody. I can't seem to get the rhythm. But I'm still trying.. You're very generous with your time. TX for responding.
Your instruction method is very clear and you avoid unnecessary fluff, making it easy to jump in. Thank you for the lesson!
Your method of showing the clawhammer style is probably the best on the internet, thank you

I find your playing so easy to learn from. I've been playing for a few years, but your playing talks to me.
Wonderful Thankyou .

Hi Hilarie, Is this open G tuning?
Looks like it's standard open G except for the C pitch on the 2nd string.
She's in clawhammer tuning Everything's the same except the B is tuned to C
