I was a huge Gilligan's Island fan as a kid. I wrote off to Bob Denver's fan club one year, and a month or so later I got an envelope in the mail with an autographed wallet-size picture of Denver (not wearing his Gilligan hat!). I was thrilled of course. There was a little message on the back that said something like "Best wishes, Bob Denver." I felt very honored. I was about 10 years old. Great banjo playing, BTW!
Those lights are fireflies. Lazy water, susurrant. Always remember, tomorrow is your day. It was written so. Everyone will be watching, you're one who makes the flowers grow.
Bought a banjo in my misspent youth. My picking hand is not smart enough to play banjo. I sold it. Forty-five years and several guitars later, I love hearing this style. A nice modal tune, well done.
The nod to the Chieftains sends us back in history, to why the banjo and the ballad came to the Americas and the Scots - Irish influence in our music ...Gilligan would be proud. Shalom in Him, Yeshua Hamashiach
Lovely My daughter and I listen to Shady Grove on my channel every night before bed. It's to say goodnight to the Ermine. Seth and I met Shady Grove at the Ak Folk Festival in Juneau Alaska. She's a reporter there.
😂 the calendar in the background, she’s fully committed, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was helping her grandfather transport moonshine in the back of their model T ford down the creek
Gilligan’s Island…theme…Dobie Gillis…hat looks familiar…life imitating art. Phoebe…you get better every time I hear you. You go girl! Where were you…looked like you were somewhere else while you were playing. Nice job!👍👏👏👏
Hi Phoebe, no it's not in standard open G tuning. The tuning is G-Modal also commonly known as G-Sawmill. In open G tuning - the notes from the 5th string to the 1st are G, D, G, B, D. From this tuning, the B string is tuned up 1/2 step and gives the banjo a melancholy sound. Great job, beautiful tune. 😊
The variation that you did is great. Your version as a whole reminds me of the Tom Paley folk box version and the lyrics that go with the Folk Box version are to my mind the best coz' Shady Grove is the location, not a person, "One arm around the Likker' keg and the other round my dear".... soooo romantic, lol.
Nice one Phoebe ! From memory I first heard this tune played on a Doc Watson album. If I recall correctly,Doc played it on a little fretless banjo his father made him when Doc was a kid.🇭🇲 ❤
Take it from an old man. That fine picking. Keep it up baby doll. You’ll be able to play with your eyes closed soon enough. Thanks for the play my favorite song.
What’s the other tune that you bring into Shady Grove? I’m sure I’ve heard it on the Chieftain’s Plank Road album. … I love your approach to playing. I’m sure you inspire a lot of people to pick up their banjos and just play them for the joy of making music.
Thanks!

Beautiful ! I enjoy your playing immensley,,,The clawhammer style has always the nice gentle roll and not the garish "flat & Scruggs" pickin,
Love it! You're the coolest kid on youtube!

Phoebe is the best she gives a mountain of pleasure 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Yessiree, that's the way. I love how you're in complete command of the tempo. And Rest in Peace Bob Denver.

Great version Phoebe! I like your Gilligan calendar. Gilligan's Island was a staple of after school tv for me when I was little back in the early 70s.

I cherished my "Gilligan hat" when I was a kid. Great version of this tune!
This reminds me of Matty Groves by Fairport Convention. I guess they're probably based on the same tune
Great hat. Even better banjo playing 👍
I bet Gillian wished he had a banjo on that island. . . I feel like there’s a song there 👀
