Tom would be amazed his playing has stuck around all these years .. Great to hear you do this ... I think I was playing 40 years before CHris Berry explained an off string pull off on YT .. All the best Guy
Thanks! I use my index finger throughout, because that's the finger that works best for me for clawhammer. But you could use the middle finger throughout, even for the roll. A lot of people do, and I don't think it makes any difference at all.
Man, you're doing lessons on all my favorite old time tunes. Wish I would have found this along time ago, oh well still great to learn some variations. Thanks for making these.
Colin Bazsali I got it all close enough except for the last part of the solo. I got the ukulele roll and the drop thumb. I just can't pick out the notes to the solo afterwards... Can you make a video covering it? I know that's a lot of work. I'll keep trying to pick it out.
Sorry, I don't have the time to make videos now. In January, I'm going to start teaching Banjo 2 again at a college, so I might be making new videos then. I'll be sure to improve the one for Coo Coo.
Colin thanks for all your lessons. I was wondering do you have a link to tab for this song it is a little hard to see your right hand. I am just starting on clawhammer banjo. Thanks!
Ok so I'm new to frailing and on my little iPad I cannot tell which notes are you dropping your thumb on. On the first lick I'm wanting to drop my thumb and extra time (I think lol). Is there a wrong or right way, and which notes do you drop yours on? LOVE THIS SONG!
Take a look at the video here at 6:23: The Coo Coo Lesson Review MATC Spring 2013 In that 4-note figure, the thumb drops only once, on the second note, the open second string. The figure repeats several times, but it's always the same.
Im getting close and Ive got something. I just need to smooth it out and speed it up. Ive been practicing the strum and the first string pull off to get it perfect. On the strum, is totally open or are you are fretting a note somewhere? Mine sounds a little different than yours.
Thanks man, Ive got a good bit of it going. Im on time, and I can play all the runs. I can fool people that have never heard a master do it ;) Just have to nail down the accents. Thanks.
Clawhammer: striking the first through fourth strings with the back of the fingernail (in my case, the index finger), and plucking the fifth string with the flesh of the thumb.
Colin Bazsali i see, thanks for the quick response. im wondering if that actually is a style, the plucking i mean, because i find myself playing that way sometimes and the only way ive heard it described is just the way not to play clawhammer haha
Your love of the music, and your excellent performing and explaining all shine so brightly. Thank you.

Sorry, I don't have good tabs for "Coo Coo."
This is again a great lesson! Do you normally strike with your index finger, or do you just employ it for the brush/roll part?
Thank you!

The strum is indeed open. Good luck!

Are you open G tuning in this, or Graveyard? (d) ?
+Meredith Moon Neither. It's G modal, or "sawmill." gDGCD
thanks! great playing
Hi Meredith!!!!!
Hi Robin!!!!!
Do you have a TAB version of this song? I have been looking forever for this version. I am trying to do it by ear, but I just can't get it right.
do you use your middle or index finger.
Index finger.
are you hitting the string like clawhammer or plucking it?
Clawhammer: striking the first through fourth strings with the back of the fingernail (in my case, the index finger), and plucking the fifth string with the flesh of the thumb.
