I think this is the only banjo channel I've found that actually fully breaks down whats goin on I've not been able to follow other videos till I found this
Can't wait to try this. You taught me how to play "Oh Death" and my made my fingers do things I never thought was possible. Took me a couple weeks to lock it in. Hoping the same for this one. Peace.
I've worn out a couple of finger nails trying to learn how to frail, so while they grow back I'm going to learn some Doc Boggs tunes. Thanks for the lessons. Great stuff.
Thanks for this video, friend. I’ve had this song stuck in my head off and on for like a year now, very grateful to get it out of my system by learning it! :)
@@ColinBazsali you really are a great teacher! I love Dock Boggs and I’ve gotten a few songs down from your videos, keeping my fingers crossed for more :)
Thank you kind sir. This is so helpful. I look forward to giving it a go. The second part made my brain hurt a bit but you broke it down nicely. Thanks again
Spent some time on the first part and I almost have it. The anchoring of the pinky was very helpful. I’m currently trying to write out the second part to try next. Thanks again
Hey Colin, just to say thank you for putting these videos together. Is there anyway to support these lessons eg a Patreon site or tip jar etc? Your teaching method, which is thorough , with clear explanations, helps enormously. There is little out there on teaching this style. I really appreciate it.
Thanks for your kind words, Christopher! I don't have any monetary compensation set up, and frankly I don't care to. Seems like it would be more trouble than it's worth figuring out how to do that. :) But thanks for your compliments! That's tip enough for me.
Hi, I'm trying to learn seeger's banjo style and I find your videos very useful. Would it be possible to arrange a lesson via video-conference/skype? Thank you!
Hey Colin! So happy this came out! I don’t own a banjo but I’ve been learning these songs on guitar from your videos! Not a lot of resources to learn these songs Also, I’ve been messing around with making a guitar tutorial for a few songs that I’ve learned from you. Just wondering if you’d be ok with me posting these. Would definitely leave a vocal shout out and links!
In an earlier comment you mentioned the type of strings for the mail-order banjo sound. Can you expound on old time playing and making the banjo sound the best for our style of playing?
Thanks for this awesome tutorial, I love learning these Dock Boggs songs! BUT.. I have a question.. In Part 1 section, it sounds like you are hitting the 2nd string right after you do the hammer-on 3rd string and 5th string.. (similar to Wild Bill), and it also sounds like you are hitting it again (2nd string) just before finishing off the final 4th string note, I didn't see where you mentioned this in the video and was curious if you are indeed hitting the 2nd string and if I have the timing right? Thanks!
If I understand you correctly, yes, I am plucking up on the 2nd string after the 5th string. It's not something I did consciously, but it sounds right. Gives it that diminished 7th blues note. If you like how it sounds, play it! :)
I have two questions, first when you brush do you brush the first three strings or all five? And secondly, what are the precise lyrics? I can remeber them while singing along with song, but not while playing. All the lyrics I've looked up online are discombobulated. I know this is an old video, but just recently got back into the banjo, and really trying to learn songs to sing with.
When I brush down, I usually do the first two or three strings. The lyrics I took from the liner notes of the Revenant CD of Dock's original recordings. But the lyrics were the same on the old Folkways LP, which you can see or download here: folkways-media.si.edu/liner_notes/folkways/FWRBF654.pdf

Seconded. I love this guy
I love this tune. Doc Boggs must have been a mathmatician to come up with the timing.
This is the first video about this song that I've seen that actually sounds like the original recording

Great vid, thanks for the walk-through!

You are the man! Thanks for posting these videos, I have never picked up songs so fast! You are a great teacher.

Fantastic!
Once again, thanks for posting the informative video. Like the banjo you've got, too. Nice tone.
Thank you for the video. I'm learning this song faster than I learn most.
These are so good! Glad to be late to the party so I have the whole complete series to work through!
Thanks, and welcome to the movement! 😉
That was great
Iconic
Hurrah! I've been waiting patiently since the last video :-). Thanks so much.
Thank you for waiting! Sorry it took so long.
Hi Colin,
Thanks for the new video. So glad to see you back. Very much appreciated.
Great stuff! You’re lessons are amazing
So glad to see you making these videos again! You're the best! a small correction: Tuning: gDGCD (G modal, but the song is in D)
Ah! Thanks for pointing that out!
This was awesome!!! I really would like you to do "Oh Death" tutorial sometime.
Seconded by me! Oh Death would be wonderful!
Pleeeeease an Oh Death tutorial!! I’m having so much fun learning these songs and that is one of my favorites!
Great lesson, thanks Colin!
Thanks, Mark!
Youre even nailing the vocal bend down at the bottoms.
Thanks!
It was worth the wait. Well explained. Thanks
Finally! I’ve been waiting for this. Thanks!
Thank you so much for these tutorials!
Hi could you do a tutorial and tabs for Dock Boggs’ version of Turkey in the Straw?
Finally!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!

Kewl - Thanks
Thank you very nice. would you please help me play Country Blues too? thanks
I'll get to that song eventually. :)
Are those nylon string? Nice video!
Yes, they are. That old mail-order banjo sounds best with nylon. It was probably made for gut.
I spot some Charlie Poole on your bookshelf ;)
Yes indeed you do, a boxed set put together by my friend Hank Sapoznik.

@@ColinBazsali thanks man, I'm playing a pretty good sugar baby thanks to this tutorial. Many thanks.
I want me a banje.

6:33 did you add a string 2th open note after the 5th string note ? I think I hear and see that but I might be wrong
Yes, I believe there is. I guess I didn't notice it, but it seems to be an important part of the sound of that lick. Thanks for pointing it out!
That’s almost the same as water bound by dirk powell
Yes, I suppose it is!
I see cds on that shelf...are we sure this video is 2019, not 1919?
I didn't know they had CDs in 1919! ;)
