Hey Jim, been watching your vids since I discovered the original bluegrass lessons. The content here is never dissappointing. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Man oh man the lessons are coming fast and furious and I couldn't be happier.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Jim for another great video. It helps keep us all sane. We'll it keeps me from going any more crazy.
Glad I can keep you focused on the banjo😊
Good Evening Jim, just realized I have notifications turned on here ( the only subscriber turned on ), but as usual another one of your lessons leaving a grin on my face. This really motivates me to play more and learn more. I just watched your 2+ hour live video from last year a couple days ago. I’m glad I did- you showed good character and your love for teaching n playing banjo. You truly have a gift young man. As always- thx
Hooties playing banjo
So glad I can encourage you to play! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Love the tune as always! Keep it up!
Thanks 😊
I was a bit stuck and in need of something to work on. Then I clicked on this lesson, Shady Grove, an old favorite melody. Now I'm on my way, stoked and practicing. Thanks, Jim. Your timing's uncanny.
Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for another great video Jim.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Jim for refreshing my memory on that tune ,I play it a little different, but basicly the same
Glad I could help 😊
Really nice version. Thanks so much, Jim.
Glad you like it!
What a pretty song. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching 😊
I've been wanting to learn this one!! Thanks
Glad I can help!
Great playing and great teaching.
Thanks 😊
Just started playing with a beginner's bluegrass jam at our local music store, and we were asked to learn this song for next session, so Thanks for the tutorial Jim!
Glad I could help ☺️
I was just listening to Jerry Garcia and David Grisman’s cover of shady grove, thinking to myself “I should really learn this on banjo.” Thanks Jim!
Great timing then, eh? :)
I was also just listening to Garcia and Grisman's version!
Great lesson jim 👏👏👏👏
Thanks 😊
Love it Jim, took me a while but I've finally got it, just need to get the speed up now. God Bless Davy.
Awesome! Would love to hear you play it.
I'll get the speed up a bit and send you a video 🙄
Thanks for putting this lesson together! It’s an awesome version of one of my favorite songs!!
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Nice!👍
Thanks Jim!
Thanks for watching
Great bluesy tune, brother!
Thanks 😊
this one is gonna be fun!
Can’t wait to hear you play it!
Another Jim Pankey lesson on the list!
😎
Thanke you Jim.
You’re welcome!
great tune, nicely played.....
Thanks :)
@@JimPankey Why is your answer "marked"?
thanks guy!
You bet!
Nice, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
great video
Thanks!
thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks Jim.Always loved Fairport convention's version(Matty Groves) with the wonderful Sandy Denny. And the (little Musgrave) version by Nic Jones.
Hmmm... don’t know any of those folks. 🤷🏻♂️
It is nice to learn this for clawhammer, and then you can sing "The Whole World 'Round" along to it. Also, clawhammer music in standard G is really nice.
It's a fun tune no matter how you play it. :)
Love these videos and so easy to grasp the concept of the song quickly. I'm assuming this is the Garcia version of the song and not the Doc Watson version.
It’s my version. I don’t think I’ve ever really thought about Jerry Garcia’s playing at all, and was never really prone to listen to Doc…
@@JimPankey Well, I appreciate your version. Highlights the melody perfectly with plenty of room to add in your own personal touches. Thanks for all you do!
Still working on that loooong stretchy chord in Jed Clampett, but I'll be back to learn this one! Thanks, Jim!
You can do it!
what helped me a lot was playing it capoed in A or B to get used of that stretch
@@lukasrh thanks!
Great lesson Jim, very lifting tune, hope you got the hearing sorted buddy, Davy
The hearing issue will always be an issue, but I've been able to deal with it. Glad you liked the lesson.
Me too Jim, I've had hearing damage and tinnitus for years now and the last 4 weeks have been quite bad with vertigo, but hey you have to keep pushing on. Davy
Hey there! I love your videos and have been learning banjo from your videos for a good while now. Would you consider doing a “How To Play” for `The Great Remember’ by Steve Martin in the bluegrass style? It would mean worlds to many others, as well as me, if you could! You’re the man! Keep it up!
I really don’t know that one.
Well, my resolution was 3 new banjo tunes this year, and this is the third one I’m starting today! ( Got Foggy Mtn worked out finally! Along with YAM Sunshine). Once I put this to bed I’m going to try 2 more by year’s end! Thanks so much! BTW, how about some Christmas song vids and tabs?? All the tabs online are single note plucking and that’s no fun at all. 😊
I do have Jingle Bells posted...
Thanks for watching! :)
Hey Jim. Great video, love that eerie mount sound. Any chance of you teaching it frailing style? Thanks!
Possibly! However, most of the left hand in this works for what I'd probably play clawhammer....
Hi Jim, I've been looking through your Bluegrass Tune Tutorial Playlist and noticed the 102nd Video seems to be out of place (it's a Channel 4 clip about the explosion in Beirut), just thought I'd let you know. Great lesson as always, I do feel like I need some practice on forward rolls so I'll definitely give this one a try. Thanks for the vid and keep it up!
thanks. Weird.... who knows. I've got fat fingers. ;)
Thank you Jim! I keep getting stuck on the walkdown from the 10th fret. Not sure about the finger roll from the 6th & 5th frets. But I'll keep on Pickkin till I figure it out!
Don’t get hung up looking for a specific roll. Just make sure you hit the melody notes you’re expecting.
@@JimPankey thanks Jim. That is helpful!
Hey jim, iv been playing for about 9 months or so and i have really wanted to learn “there is a time” i know you have already done a little video on it but for some reason i cant seem to get it right. I hear the forward rolls and all but for some reason i just cant get it. I would really really love it if you just did a quick tutorial on it or another demonstration on it. I really love this song and have wanted to learn it since i started playing the banjo. Weird thing is iv done much more difficult songs. Even other dillard songs like Doug’s tune without a problem. This one just gives me trouble. Please please do a little demonstration. Thank you so much jim you have taught me so much.
That one’s on the list to revisit.
@@JimPankey awesome I’m so glad!
Good Evening Jim .
Could you do a banjo lesson on Rank Stranger later on down the road
Maybe... but there's not traditionally a banjo break in that tune, but rather it's just mostly a forward rolling backup like in this link (Look about the 8 minute mark) ruclips.net/video/UZmOVzPe0ec/видео.html
Thanks
"and I said....oh..."
😁
Yeah, I've said that a couple times
Hi Jim!
Hi!
HI Jim! I'm brand new to banjo. I did your other intro banjo series of lessons and they've been incredibly encouraging and helpful. I learned Shady Grove as you teach it in this video, but somehow I still can't get it to sound how it does when you play it in the intro. Are you incorporating forward rolls or hitches or something? It sounds fuller when you play it than when i do
I’m not adding anything more than what I show in the lesson.
It just takes practice.
Could you please post the tab? It would be helpful. I am a beginner, but I’m really starting to get it! Thank you so much!
Link to the tab is in the description.
Should I do kickboxing or banjo lessons
Both!
Banjo! Then kick butt on a stage!
Thanks for all the great videos!
A banjo lesson of "Nothin' to It"? Would be great!
Not familiar with that one.
@@JimPankey "Nothin' to It" is a Song by Earl Scruggs and The Byrds recorded1971: "Earl Scruggs His Family And Friends"
ruclips.net/video/ZKxtcpSvGHw/видео.html
Well, that explains why I didn't recognize the name. I do know the song. It's the old classic "I Don't Love Nobody". No idea why they renamed it on that album.
So you only spike the 5th string at the 7th fret...no capo on the 2nd fret?
Right
Jim, What is that on your banjo head?
This? ruclips.net/video/CrFzRVCOdV0/видео.html
How do I get the tab to this song
Link is in the description , but here: wildjimbo.sellfy.store/p/shady-grove-in-d-minor/
I really like this arrangement! I just learned shady grove in E-minor, and I'm a banjo newbie - is this arrangement basically to accommodate the fact that D-minor requires a different tuning to play without going insanely up the neck?
It's in D Minor because I learned it there for the guy I played it for that I talked about in the video. Not really much of a different tuning... I actually never "count" 5th string changes as a "different" tuning.
Considered doing "in the jailhouse now"?
It's not a tune that I've ever really played.
C’mon Jim. Play the whole song at the beginning of the video, so we can decide if we want to learn your version.
Thanks.
If you’ve noticed I started doing that over a year ago - just like I did with this video. Thing is though, I use songs in these videos to teach folks how to play banjo / not just how to play back a memorized stream of notes.
I don't get it. The "song" lasts 10 seconds! How do I impress my friends with that?!
Play it over and over. Add lyrics.
thanks. Is this often the case with bluegrass songs? I've learnt an A/B cripple creek that also seems a bit short. I'm guessing it would feel less repetitive if there were other musicians accompanying.@@JimPankey
