There is a time. There are times honestly i throw on your vids just to listen and watch without my banjo. Youre like the bob ross of banjo. Thank you for this
Andy Griffith is my childhood and I've been trying to find There is a Time tab and tutorial for a while now. It makes me happy seeing my favorite teacher making a lesson!
"That one makes ya cry..." "I'll fight it!" lol. Great song I can here Maggie Peterson singing it and that's a pretty darn nice Stelling! Thanks for the lesson Jim!
There is a time for love and laughter The days will pass like summer storms The winter wind will follow after But there is love and love is warm There is a time for us to wander When time is young and so are we The woods are greener over yonder The path is new the world is free There is a time when leaves are fallin’ The woods are gray the paths are old The snow will come when geese are callin’ You need a fire against the cold So do your roaming in the springtime And you’ll find your love in the summer sun The frost will come and bring the harvest And you can sleep when day is done
I just discovered your channel. I am so happy. My instructor, Steve Dilling, formerly with iiird Thyme Out, moved, we parted ways, and I put the banjo down after a bit because I was going nowhere on my own. This is the best instruction channel I have been able to find. THANK YOU ... I am picking again !! Not like riding a bike but I'll be back !!
Hi Jim. I'm following you since a year, circa. I stopped practicing with banjo for many months and about 1 month ago I restarted playing it. I just wanted to thank you for your great lessons. Right now I'm at lesson 4 of beginning blue grass banjo. You're a great teacher. You do it in the best way possible. Thanks for being who you are. I've read your biography. I very appreciate your job and your being. I'm following you from Italy 😁 so greetings and blessings from Italy. (sorry for my bad English speaking 😅)
I was looking for some assistance with this song about 8 years ago, I don't have the best ear due to cymbals. Id watched the episode this song was in over and over again and could close but couldn't quite get it. I gave up on t until today! Thank you so much!
I play that one a little differently and caped at C position. Nice stelling. I replaced the head on mine a month before that stelling head became available. Wish I'd have known.
Great video Jim reminds me of your wayfairing stranger video and I don't play that the same way every time and it always sounds good even though it sometimes morphs into ghost riders
This is as step by step as I ever plan to do. If you can’t figure it out from this video and with it slowed down, and with the tab, then maybe you’re not quite ready for it.
JIM! amazing lesson.... I had a song reccomendation that I actually heard in Andy griffith its called shell be comin round the mountain might be a cool bluegrass lesson
Jim, About the flange on that Jo. Is it a one piece? If so where could I find one. I have an RK80 that the flange has cracked on. I have no idea why. Would be nice to have something a little different.
Great channel, I can play banjo pretty decent but I don't own a banjo. Do you know if Danville banjos are any good? I've been considering one of those.
@@JimPankey So I've finally learned this song thanks to your video and your tab. Ive been playing on a $200 Denver so far and after learning this song I upgraded to a 1981 Deering intermediate. The difference is really shocking, the months of my struggling to find the same sound as your videos, especially with the hammer ons and the pull offs, has been frustratingly difficult. But with this old Deering it finally all sounds the way it's supposed to. Hope to one day get an old Mastertone Scruggs edition before they're all too expensive. Thanks again for all your hard work in making these videos!
If I may make a tutorial suggestion, please teach us how to play dixie! I've only got about 8 hours on a banjo and am watching your tutorial for foggy mountain breakdown. I aint any good yet, but you can hear what it's supposed to be
Hi Jim, great stuff, been following your posts since learning to play the banjo just before first Lockdown, find your tutorials really helpful and easy to understand..........I heard a tune called The Flowers of Edinburgh played on clawhammer, but can't seem to get a tutorial on picking version, wondered if it would something you could demonstrate?.....All the best Jim and keep 'em coming, Regards Paul "From across the Pond"
I can, but the whole point of the tune is the tuner part... Faking it sounds like you’re faking it. I don’t see me making a video for it. Some people just play the notes you hear during the tuner part with slides or bends....
Hey Jim, Just wondering how you're able to pick with metal picks and not get that 'ting' sound while you play? Love your videos! Almost through your 10 lessons and having a blast.
Could you post a video explaining the difference strings on the banjo I am a beginner player and I’ve been through you 1-10 lessons and I can’t find one
@@JimPankey yes like “G” “D”and “B” because I don’t understand what strings is the G strings D strings and B and and the number that comes after the letters
Love your videos, sir! I am a longtime guitar player and have been wanting to pick up the banjo. You have been instrumental. By the way, is that a new banjo??
Another great upload Jim many thanks. I've been playing every day since getting my first Banjo on Christmas day. Your lessons have been pivotal in my progression as they are so easy to follow. I hate Tab! First time I've seen a vid with the Stelling. Although it's a thing of beauty (bear in mind I know nothing) your RK's sound better. Thanks for all you do Jim🙏🤪
@@JimPankey that is my favorite part of your arrangement also. I’m going to keep plugging at it. I might have to let go of the fifth fret, bounce up to the tenth, and try to return to the fifth quickly. It surely won’t be a smooth as I like it. But I’ll give it a try
You moved up to a Stelling! My Huber sounds completely different. It will never stand up to the Stellling. Stelling didn't spend his time trying to copy the old Gibsons. Not all pre war Gibsons sound great says Jim Rae who invented the Huber tone ring. Earlier today, my wife asked if I could learn to play this tune. We’re you listening in on our conversation?
By the way, this song makes me cry.
You'll have to fight back the tears. Listening? Who? Me???
What a beauty of a banjo. Nice oven too!....Thanks Jim! I know some folks who like to play in Am, too, so this is good practice
You bet!

I play that one a little differently and caped at C position. Nice stelling. I replaced the head on mine a month before that stelling head became available. Wish I'd have known.
I’ve got Dillard recordings of it capoed at Bb and B. Just not much reason to invoke a capo unless a singer needs it.
Beautiful Stelling banjo too
Indeed it is!
Great lesson. I always wanted to learn this.
Great! Would love to hear you play it!
I will learn it, record it and send it to you! God bless brother!
I can't remember the last time I saw a Hodaka shirt.
😀🏍
Awesome. Thank you very much .
You are welcome!
Would love to hear your version of cotton eye joe!!!! You are amazing! Thank you for the videos!! I’ve learned so much on the banjo!
Hmmm... I'll have to figure out which version of Cotton Eyed Joe... I think I know three different ones.
@@JimPankey anything you do is awesome!
Learning how to play the banjo from you. I'm actually catching on to my own surprise
Keep me posted on your progress 😊
We should call that one “ ol Jim Pankey ” 🤠👍🏻
Why?

Thanks!
Thanks for what ya do.
My pleasure!
great job JIm!
Thanks!
Sounds really cool..! Thanks for this! Do you have a lesson about single string stuff? Do you like to play it? Or its important to learn it? Thanks 😊
I really don’t do a lot of single string... I usually teach local students Follow the Leader and let them experiment from there

Hey Jim, not sure if you know of the group the lil smokies. I'd absolutely kill for a lesson on their song fortunes or something in that area.
Not familiar with the group...
@@JimPankey they're from Montana and super talented. Probably my favorite current bluegrass group.
Jim,
About the flange on that Jo.
Is it a one piece? If so where could I find one. I have an RK80 that the flange has cracked on. I have no idea why.
Would be nice to have something a little different.
Well... this type of flange wouldn’t work on your banjo, but you should be able to get a replacement for your RK80
@@JimPankey yeah I can.
The same one like everybody else.😔
It's a basic Gibson RB style.
Thanks

Jim. Jim from Ohio. Do you put a plastic bag in all of you banjos and why? Thx
Nope… just my RK openback. Dampens a little of the sustain without hurting the volume.

Do I have to sing if I play the banjo? I’m not a singer at all but I try when I’m at a friends place

Is that another way to play C chord when you slide up from AMinor chord to 5th fret?
Yup 😊

Yup, standard tuning.
Can you play flint Hill special without needing D tuners and if so can you do a video on it
