I don't know very much about prisms yet, but I'm very familiar with other optics and also Optics (like the physics). Why are high quality prisms not quite as good as red dots unless they have wide FOV and 2 or 3x mag?
@@rondobrondo Prisms have a narrow eye box compared to a red dot which can be a big deal when you need to be making shots quickly and up close, though prisms from primary arms have mostly rectified the issue. Prisms are 90% as good as red dot in this regard, and training with a prism will quickly phase out any eye box issues you'll run into, hence being 90% as good as a red dot up close. In particular, I'm a fan of the primary arms ACSS system, which has specially crafted BDCs and reticles for being both fast up close, and accurate at distance.
I watched a video in which a rifle had a red dot as the primary aiming point mounted on the top rail and a micro prism was mounted on a canted mount to the side. The reason was that in 2 gun matches the majority of shots are up close with only a few shots at distance. The advancement in technology with micro prism scopes allows for such a setup. It's completely different than we are used to, but it makes sense for an urban environment.
The main issue is that the 3x is going to be used for the longer shot. Shots where youll want to be extra stable, which is harder with the rifle canted. For 3 Gun where speed is everything it can make sense. However for real life/urban/shtf etc I think a 3x magnifier is the way to go. You can even get the primary arms 3x micro, which is this without an etched reticle and illumination. They do have a unity ftc mount for it
Nice job, as always. I gave up the glx 2x for this 3x on my 300blk - this old man’s eyes needed just that little extra boost; and so far, very pleased. Now to see if it helps me get those 220gr 🎉subsonics out to 300 yds!
I put one of the new PA micro dots on top of a spitfire 5x. The RS10 has autolive and NV settings with the docter footprint, the venom lacks those features. I put a PA cantilever mount under it to get a half inch closer to my eye while simultaneously ditching the vortex mount. The setup goes hard on my 14.5
Those PA cantilever micro mounts are really handy - ironically, more so for mounting other makers’ microprisms (which use the Micro T2 footprint) than PA’s own prisms (which don’t).
My only complaint with my 3x is my illumination knob is a bit stiff to use. Otherwise I would also pay more for an increase in glass quality to the GLX level.
Glx glass is so, so clear. Like the top of the line $2000 glass 10 years ago is what glx glass looks like right now. How they can even manage to have a higher tier is straight up voodoo magic to me.
The Gen II version of the GLX prism could be a real monster. If I were PA, I would design it to put even more direct pressure on Trijicon and the ACOG line than the current GLX 2x does. If they could improve the FOV on the Gen II and not ruin the excellent eye relief and general usability, they’d have a really compelling optic. It would probably have to get a little bigger, but it’d still be lighter than a 3x prism-plus red dot combo.
I completely agree. Is like to see more Philippino made scopes from them. And hopefully ones that will perform better then their current glx line up optically. Physically they are excellent. But the 3-18 left me wanting much much more.
@@CDOES I would even accept Chinese made on the Gen II as long as they keep the same nice glass that’s on the current GLX 2x. My working theory- which is *speculative* but does seem to fit with the observational data in your videos - is that the 2x is a “GLX” because PA had it spec’ed out with the highest tier of optical glass the Chinese OEM could provide, while the SLX microprisms are maybe one tier down? This would also explain why the Vortex Spitfire II looked better than the SLX 5x in your comparison - maybe Vortex went with the higher tier glass, while PA , at a similar price point, is choosing to offer a significantly more feature rich prism with better reticle, illumination, adjustments etc. (though the Vortex does beat it in red dot mounting options) Again, just spitballing. And even if they’re not literally the same OEMs I would think the trade offs would be essentially similar.

I've tried running a ton of prisms on a carry handle and the 3x PA is by far the best. I would love just a smidge more eye relief, but it gives about as good as you can get before dealing with significant tradeoffs.
I put a 3X on my Springfield Hellion along with an offset mount for a micro RDS. It works, but it’s not at all intuitive. At 25 yards and beyond the 3x is pretty easy to deal with. Training with it inside 25 starts to get more difficult. Especially in low light. My astigmatism is fairly severe. I can deal with most red dots, though some are better than others. Eotechs are out of the question for me. Maybe I’ll try a 2x. I struggle with the offset. I’ve trained with M4s and Aimpoints for 30 years and have found it easier to adapt to a bullpup than to an offset optic!
Primary arms offers a 12 o'clock mount in which to install a micro reflex site. This setup provides the best of both options for cqb and precision distance shooting.
Great video and comparison! I think the GLX 2 is far superior. I have both and like the 2x the best. If you look at the SLX 3x it has a yellowish brown color on the edge.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that when you were sighted in on one of the center targets at 100yrds, that was an excellent visual comparison of FOV, because the viewer can pause the video and count the number of target stands. I assume that the spacing and width of the target stands is constant enough over time to make FOV comparisons. Since you're there filming anyway, it would be really cool if you get a pic or vid of each optic sighted in on a center target so we can count target stands to the left and right in the FOV. Anyway, keep up the good work Sir, you're definitely my go-to for all things optics
I have the 1x and 3x. the 1x is 100% gtg. i love it. its on a lw carbine and its perfect.. the 3x.. i have mixed feelings on. its really good at 3x. but i always cant help but feel hindered by not having a 1x option, without a offset rd or something which i dont want to do. i like the light weight and small footprint of the micro 3x, but i love the capablity of an LPVO, but hate the weight and size!
Practice snap shooting with just a quick presentation with the 3x. Get it bright, get the eye far enough back to be out of the eyebox, scan with both eyes above the optic, then snap shoot by letting the illuminated reticle quickly index over the target, then break the shot. With practice, it's relatively fast.
I'd love to see side by comparison with Vector Optics Paragon 3x prism. It's probably more of a direct competitor to the SLx 3x microprism than any other optic presented here. Full disclosure: I owned both of those optics and ended up selling my SLx 3x Microprism. While Paragon lacks auto-life and some of the reticle features of ACSS, I think it has significantly better glass, field of view, eye box, smaller body shadow, and just overall more usable.
Competition world is starting to run these offset with 1x red dot in primary upright position on upper receiver. So reverse of what usually guys did traditionally where the prism was primary upright and red dot was offset or on top of prism.
I run the 5x on one of my setups with an offset red dot. I use the PA offset mount- not the piggyback. I really like shooting with that setup. Going 5-1,1-5 with a tilt is nice. One thing that I have heard/read that going from 1-5 is too much of shock when switching. Baloney. These same folks run and LPVO and throw it from 1-6 all the time.
I have a 3x MicroPrism and while I love its ruggedness and compactness, the short eye relief limits its use to basically an AR platform (I tried it on a MP5 and shotguns, no luck). If I feel I need an offset reflex sight for short ranges I’ll just use a LPVO with one or run a MAGNIFIER + Red Dot combo. Where I really think this prism optic could shine in on a very compact, very light .300 Blackout PDW. Just the prism and a flashlight to keep it slim. It won’t be a DMR but it’ll but it will be more than enough for shooting inside 300yd. It’s a compromise gun.
I had the 3x on my 8.3" 7.62x39 Galil Ace and I took it off not long after, just went to nice irons. The holds are useless with the tiny reticle and even mounted as far back as possible the relief was not good enough for me.
@@JNOSNOW yeah, no way the eye relief is 2.65” as the manufacturer claims. It’s closer to 1.5” for me. I now mounted it on a .22lr AR. I’m not mourning it in anything with more recoil with a optic that close to my eye.
Great reviews, I watched a few of your other review videos as well. I appreciate the consistent format, makes it nice when comparing different optics. I'm going to mount this 3x on a .308 Ruger American Ranch Gen 2 for a knock around/ brush gun. Keep up the good work!
Great video.. I like the 3x with a red dot in my video games .. 2x makes a great fighting optic if you only have one, but I'd rather make close shots with a red dot and farther shots with a 3x. 5x would require a specific application
Thank you for this. It would be nice if you are going to further compare the 2x GlX vs others to get a better comparison video if you can source it again. Thank you
Great comparison. I would’ve liked to see what the 3X looks like on closer engaging targets. I know you speak about putting an offset red dot, but would’ve been a cool test.
I just wish the reticle was larger in the window. I have a 1x 9mm on my banshee and i have a 3x 7.62x39 i had on my galil ace then an AR and now it just sits in the safe waiting for possible use some day
Great and thorough video. I am very curious to see how this optic compares to the Trijicon LED TA110 at 3.5x. That particular optic with green crosshairs is reported from Trijicon to have a 22+ week lead time in production and I could not justify waiting 5+ months for that optic. I picked up the SLx 3x to test as I already have a holosun AEMS and Eotech XPS. The Primary Arms definitely is a high quality optic and comes with a lot of mounting options right out of the box. I agree with all of your findings but would love for Primary Arms to take advantage of their prisms and etched glass to put more vertical and horizontal cross hair lines for holdover and windage. That would help these optics really compete with Trijicon. They can even charge more for such a dream optic as the SLx is really affordable at $300+ retail, and I still wouldn't have sticker shock. Keep up the great and honest reviews!
Another great review. Just bought one of these, this review didn’t do anything but confirm my decision! Thanks for exceptional content. Just curious, what camera set up are you running behind the optic? These videos look so crisp.
I like the 2x a lot and I have two. I'm debating on muh 30-30, if I should add a 3x on top or a 2x. Any thoughts? The eye relief on the 3x concerns me as to where I would need to mount it, the 2x seems like it would be far more user friendly in the field, except for those times when you would like a bit of magnification.
Would totally put the 2x on that lever gun. The longer eye relief (and longer optic body) will help you find a comfortable mounting solution. It actually struck me when I got mine that the GLX 2x would be perfect for a .30-30. (If you had the .300BLK version, I’d also be curious how well the BDC dots would line up for the .30-30 cartridge.)
If you can, I would love for you to take a look at the Vector Continental 1-6x24i. It's a sub $500 LPVO that I think would be a good comparison against the PA Nova and the Vortex Razer.
Primary arms has an article on their site discussing the prisms and magnifiers. At least from their recommendation, you really only want to magnify the 1x. Cant remember the details but i believe they mentioned distortion with two sets of magnified glass
I bought an athlon tsp3 just before the release of this one... Work great so far but the slx is interesting! Maybe one day after the tripod, new range finder and garmin xero 🤷
Question: what do you think of the full size 3x and 5x Gen III SLx prisms?? Any advantages of having a full size unit? I do not mind size/weight. Thanks in advance?
Question. I am looking for a rifle that can be used for close in HD all the way to maybe 400 meters. I would like a prism because of the sharp reticle and the no batteries. The x1 PA seems good for the close stuff, but for the range and precision I was thinking maybe adding a Juliet x4 with a QD mount that I would mostly leave off until I felt I would need/want it more. Do you think this would be a good option? I didn't want to go lpvo because of weight, and having this rifle's primary job of SHTF issues, I didn't want to have a higher magnification as mostly I would be shooting 0-200m, but then could add the magnifier for longer shots, recon, etc... rather than have a x3 or 5 prism with an offset. What do you think...am I on the right track for my SHTF rifle in my suburban environment that would be more fun for precision shooting with a magnifier that I could take off for keeping it light?
Could you do a comparison of the new 3x microprism vs the old 3x prism? wanted to see if there was a big difference in eye box, sharpness and field of view feel
All prism optics seem to have poop eye relief, despite being fixed power, and it seems to me it would be simple to engineer a longer eye relief. So I always hesitate on prisms.
Side note I wish they would just make a poverty acog. 4x fixed with fiber optic illumination, huge field of view, just ditch the tritium imo, It's barely useful and adds a lot of unnecessary cost.

I really appreciate the detail you went into for this review. Thanks!
Happy to help
I'd love to see side by comparison with Vector Optics Paragon 3x prism. It's probably more of a direct competitor to the SLx 3x microprism than any other optic presented here.
Full disclosure: I owned both of those optics and ended up selling my SLx 3x Microprism. While Paragon lacks auto-life and some of the reticle features of ACSS, I think it has significantly better glass, field of view, eye box, smaller body shadow, and just overall more usable.
Also the hawk optics prisms that just came out.
@@michaelnyden8056 hmm I didn't even know about that one
Paragon 3x glass is not as clear as SLx 3x, but eye box is much better.
@@BigSmartArmed That wasn't my experience. I found Paragon transmitting more light and having much less of a fuzzy edge than SLx does.
Competition world is starting to run these offset with 1x red dot in primary upright position on upper receiver. So reverse of what usually guys did traditionally where the prism was primary upright and red dot was offset or on top of prism.
PS - love the red and yellow text over the optic views! Thank you! 😊 🙏
Been thinking about getting one of these so good to see your review of this one.
Great content C_Does
This leads to ask… what is C_Does’ current go-to-boog sighting system? Future video idea?
Thnx.for the review.
Mine has been great to me but I'm thinking of selling for the 5x glad to see this video come out
I run the 5x on one of my setups with an offset red dot.
Bought the 2x based on your recommendation. Love it. It's on an AK, so the generous eye relief is helpful.
Thank you
Great optic. Sure wish they made it in GLX. Would gladly pay more for the better glass.
Absolutely great review, thanks
Great comparison. I would’ve liked to see what the 3X looks like on closer engaging targets. I know you speak about putting an offset red dot, but would’ve been a cool test.
Great video.
Can you take a look at the Holosun 507comp big window optic next?
Best optics comparison channel! Thank you very much fpr your Work! 👌
Awesome review thank you.
So for a one and done optic…. GLX!?!
I’m really interested in this one.
another excellent optic review
Magnification changed the game for marines. The 3x with its short comings is very good still
Would you get the PA 3x or get the PA 1X and put a PA 3X magnifier behind it? I'm shooting a PCC, 150yds or less.
Would like to know as well...
Another great review. Just bought one of these, this review didn’t do anything but confirm my decision! Thanks for exceptional content. Just curious, what camera set up are you running behind the optic?
These videos look so crisp.
I snatched up a couple of the 2.5X prisms they discontinued at a can't say no price.
I was lucky enough to get a BLEM version of this scope. I only paid a skootch under 200 bucks. It's pretty permanently attached to one of my AR's.
Have you tested & reviewed their new magnifier?
I've had this for a while but sadly haven't used as much.im happy with the choice but can see other good options out there.
Hey C_Does, any comments on the Primary Arms SLx 3X with the Griffin X MIL reticle?
It would be like this, with a different reticle. I can't say which would be better for you. Only you can.
Thank you for this video! Super interested in these. By the way, which model of Seiko are you wearing?
If you can, I would love for you to take a look at the Vector Continental 1-6x24i. It's a sub $500 LPVO that I think would be a good comparison against the PA Nova and the Vortex Razer.
You are not the first person to recommend that
I have one.
I'll mail it for the show, for science.
How well would the GLX 2x work with the Monstrum 2x forward magnifier? switching between 2x and 4x would be nice
Primary arms has an article on their site discussing the prisms and magnifiers. At least from their recommendation, you really only want to magnify the 1x. Cant remember the details but i believe they mentioned distortion with two sets of magnified glass
You said you wouldn't choose either one of these as your battle ready system, what would you choose? Thanks for a through run down
I bought an athlon tsp3 just before the release of this one... Work great so far but the slx is interesting! Maybe one day after the tripod, new range finder and garmin xero 🤷
You said that you would pick another type of batle optic. What optic would you pick?
Thanks for the excellent review
I am between a SLX3x and the gen II spitfire 3x? Have not seen much out there on the spitfire 3x.
Been running the 3x for about 6 months now and its been excellent, especially for my lightweight 13.7 build.
Well done. Thank you
I have the 1X on a PCC and the 3X on order for a light weight AR.
It's the best. Wait for often 12% off sales
Question: what do you think of the full size 3x and 5x Gen III SLx prisms?? Any advantages of having a full size unit? I do not mind size/weight.
Thanks in advance?
Just found your channel and love your reviews!
Primary Arms let's those with astigmatism be part of the red dot club. Absolutely love mine
I don’t like how the illumination isn’t uniform until level 7-8. Other than that, it’s great!
Do I get this right: it is a magnified optic that can be used with NVGs???
Prisms are the way.
Could you do a comparison of the new 3x microprism vs the old 3x prism? wanted to see if there was a big difference in eye box, sharpness and field of view feel
I just learned so much from this video. Great job. You need a job in the firearms industry.
I own Vortex 3x HD prism, and its reticle is much smaller and harder to see compared to this PA
The green version illuminates evenly for mine. Absolutely love it
I love mine, the green reticle illums kinda unevenly though. I also wish it looked less goofy, why do acogs have to look so sexy?
8:08 “retched eticle” - I’m gonna be saying that
All prism optics seem to have poop eye relief, despite being fixed power, and it seems to me it would be simple to engineer a longer eye relief. So I always hesitate on prisms.
PA should really offer a premium microprism with better glass at twice the price...still way cheaper than the trijicon offering
What would your battle ready go to war system be? You didn’t elaborate
Steiner t332 is $499. Is that the goto war option?
Why is the slx not "battle ready"? Seems solid
Nice review. Any idea if this piece is compatible with the flip mount for the micro 3x magnifier from PA?
From what ive read, you really only want to magnify the 1x
If I was in the US I would ship you my Swampfox Trihawk so you can see how my favorite 3X prism performs. Please check that one out!
The 3x is a fixed power correct?
What optic system would you choose as your battle ready optic if not the slx
What’s your recommendation on 100-200 yards? 2x, or 3x?
@@tjblackbauer9997 id prefer a 2x but even a good 3x would be great. I've rocked both. It's just a matter of personal preference.
Do you think the 3x PA prism would work with and A2 stock, or would eye relief be too far away?
Have you heard any word on the Vector Continental 1-6x24i fiber? I was super let down by the nova.
I have one.
Huge FOV.
It's like a Sig MSR 1-6 with a thinner reticle, better eye box, and fiber dot illumination.
The detents on the ones I've bought are difficult to identify, so zeroing is more difficult than it should be. They're definitely not audible.
P arms be cutting them checks for your boy
I have the slx 3x, not really a fan of the chevron. I would prefer if it was just a dot.
Would you run this prism with any height adjustment?
Side note I wish they would just make a poverty acog. 4x fixed with fiber optic illumination, huge field of view, just ditch the tritium imo, It's barely useful and adds a lot of unnecessary cost.
I agree they should start making a run straight at the ACOG. Help shake Trijicon out of its govt-fed complacency.
i honestly just wish for a 2.5x
This one or cyclops gen 2 slx? What is more rugged (waterproof, shock proof etc) and suitable for hunting? I have a Henry Lever action. Pls let me know thank you.
Are the glx not available anymore
