What Myths do YOU have about guitar & music? please share so we can all progress faster!

I taught guitar and fiddle for 20 years altogether. My mantra is that music should be fun. I always tried to keep lessons light-hearted so that students felt comfortable struggling and learning. If we really enjoy what we're doing, we can't help but get better!

Find me arhythmical, atonal music that isn't painful to leave on for more than a minute. The more theory I understand and learn how to apply the better I get. You have helped with that Rotem! 👍

Teachers teach what they know and worked for them and there students… but in the end as a student you have to find the bits and pieces that work for you. That’s so nice on the you tube music teachers. So many flavours and everywhere you can take some bits and pieces to complete you’re musical learning journey.

I just wanted to say a massive thank you for your content and existence as a human being. My guitar practice had stagnated for a period of nearly 15 years. I watched your video 2 weeks ago on learning the fretboard and have done roughly an hour each day following your step by step formula alongside a program i found called fachords, (its a game which test your knowledge i play the game about 15 minutes a day) and ive started to build a mental map and working knowledge of the fretboard i never imagined was possible - from a distance this always seemed like an insurmountable task. Your encouragement to challenge and interact and analyse the feeling of frequencies has borne me up with its energy.
you asked in another of your videos what was our general practice regimen.
for me it is roughly as follows. warming up with new ways and paths of playing three octaves of major scales whilst singing along with diatonic arpeggios currently in C (15-20 mins) attempting to work out the chords in songs from my most listened on spotify (15-45 mins) 15 mins attempting to play along with cd's and music alternating bettween bass lines and lead lines and saxophone parts eg with jaco and the chicken (15mins) and the last few weeks fifteen minutes at the end of the session trying to learn to read music with the new found knowledge of the guitar fretboard. im pretty fidgety as a person so i stand up and walk around after 15 mins to get refocused and sit back down after a 5 minute break.
apologies for the length of the comment, im massively grateful again to you for leading me back to my love of guitar and ive subscribed to your patreon. which is beyond incredible value for money! your passion and knowledge puts a smile on my face thank you for improving my life and that of many many others

I studied classical guitar at conservatory in the early 80's. The myth in those days: playing electric guitar is bad for your technique. We were not allowed (!) to play electric guitar on punishment of being kicked out. It was very "them or us". I hated that.

@@RotemSivanGuitar It was part of Andres Segovia's reign. I remember that when John Williams (who was my idol) played electric on the first Sky album it was like the world had stopped turning.... it made me know they were all just wrong.

Sucks. I play classical first, followed by jazz boxes and 8 string shred beasts. I utilize different techniques on each and they all overlap and make me a far more creative player overall.

My least favorite myth was big when I was a kid.
If your kid wants to play give him an acoustic.
When I was young a les Paul was 1,000 ish and even strings were expensive so rather than invest in even a decent guitar you got a horrible finger killer.
It really did weed a lot of us out.
You dont need a les paul for sure but please be a little kind

The myth of x amount of time is needed to make a practice session count.
"show up" every day is what matters, even if it is strumming a chord, a two chord change, playing a single lick or a phrase, a scale or whatever. Show up every day, hold your instrument every day, that's what matters the most.
This truly wasted a lot of opportunity for me because I listened to the teachers that said if you don't have an x amount of time to practice, it's not even worth it, you're not going to get better.
Worst advice from well meaning people and great players and teachers otherwise.
