Learn to play in the same key all over the neck and that is your basic trail, then start melodic lines from the basic trail.. Trust me it works! Add in arpeggios, bends, trills, sweeps, tapping, etc and you are there...

Please link to your guitar. 🎸
(What's the link to the guitar maker's web page that tells us all about your cool-looking guitar?)

This more of a zen practice than anything else.
And enjoyable to watch and listen.

Thanks for sharing your interesting insights, Rotem. Do you play with delay with a high level of feedback to allow you to clearly hear the relationship of successive notes?

It's like you're using a part of your mind to teach another part of your mind. You're using the logical mind - which knows how to learn - to teach your sub-conscious which wants to learn this particular skill. The physical brain has different parts and in order to learn those parts need to communicate. Normally this process is automatic, like a child learning how to tie a shoelace, but in adults our ego tries to tell us we don't need to learn like kids, when we very much do!!

Consciously playing is very helpful. I noticed a couple of interesting things about Pentatonic scales and the Modes when I started really focusing on them.
Guitarists often play an extra note on the Pentatonic when practicing it over 2 octaves. For instance, the G Pentatonic often turns around on the Bb on the 1st string.
A similar oddity takes place when playing a continuous 3 octave Major Scale in 4/4. The 1st octave stars on Ionian, the 2nd on Dorian, and the 3rd on Phrygian based on the first note of each octave. I think this Conscious Dissonance creates problems in hearing the true character of these scales and Modes.

I thought I knew how to play the pentatonic scale until I studied Eric Johnson. I’ll never look at the scale the same way. May me think how many other scale was not getting more out of. This was a fun video thanks.

I can sum this all up in one sentence. No matter where you are on the neck you are playing the same notes in the key you are in.
